As a Kailua resident this refuge station is one of the best fast convenient friendly service here and it's free to residents of Kailua. Nice to have this facility funded by our local taxes. They will take just about anything from used batteries to metal, appliances, fiberglass, copper wire and all kinds of junk. Today I had a load of green waste. They have a special dump site just for green waste. 4 lanes that flow pretty well. Convenient hours to include weekends. If you want to get rid of your stuff and do not want to pay someone, City & County of Honolulu has a lot of facilities to collect waste. I come to this one because they accept appliances, a little far drive fro me because I live in town, but the entire experiences is nice and smooth. I got there a little bit earlier than the opening time. The guy at the entrance just told me to wait a few minutes before let me enter. It is a nice facility. It seems pretty organize, the first area you will see is a general waste area, if you keep driving down the road, you will get to the appliances waste and also green waste. It took me only a few minutes to get it done. read more

Kapaa Transfer Station is sister to the Keehi Transfer Station both run and managed by the City & County of Honolulu. The difference is the location. One on the north, the other on the south. This review is written to describe the Kapaa Transfer Station located on the windward side between Kailua and Kaneohe. The open daily, seven days a week from 10 am to 6 pm. There are 4 areas: trash, metal, propane tanks, appliances. There is a guard at the entrance who will check what you have and direct you to the proper areas. Do not attempt to enter the trash stalls without being told to do so. Do the right thing and use the transfer stations for your trash and refuse. They make it easy for you to do so. Note - as of November 11, 2022; the Kailua (Pali Hwy) entrance to Kapaa Quarry Road is closed. Plan accordingly and go from the Kaneohe or H3. This traffic quandry is not shown on their website and no one answers the phone, so be warned. OR, you could be like me as I RARELY go to the windward side so it was quite the tour for me, going through Kailua town to the other entrance.... read more

I drove 45 minutes one way to get to Kapaa Transfer Station after looking online to make sure they would be open. The website noted they'd be open until 6 PM and I didn't see any closure notices. Get all the way out there at 4:30 PM and the gate's closed; the worker at the gate told me verbally that they close at 6 but everyone had closed up early already. If you can haul your own trash, this transfer station is very convenient. I have been coming to Kapaa Transfer Station easily over 18 years. The staff I find is very direct, professional and nice. If you plan on going, always check their website for updated hours, and especially the rules of what you can dispose of and the amounts. Off hand I know they allow green trash, household trash, steel, furniture, appliances... but like I mentioned, please check the website. read more

First found this place after being turned away from Kihei when we were trying to get rid of a mattress - they wouldn't accept the mattress because of the metal springs. Since then I've been back multiple times as I am apparently a 5 year old boy who lives to see big vehicles in action. It stinks but not too badly and it's fascinating to watch the front end loader in action. While it seems they pretty much take everything except vehicles, you should check the Opala website to make sure. We've thrown away busted furniture, non working TVs, wet mattresses, green waste and general household garbage. ALSO, they don't charge!! Maybe that's why I'm addicted to coming here - in Virginia we had to pay by the truckload or by weight depending on what the garbage was. When you first enter, an employee will ask what you're bringing in then direct you up the drive to the facility. At the entrance another employee will ask again and will want to know exactly what you have. if you have green waste and/or appliances, you'll be directed to drive through the facility and down to an open area to dump those items. Pro tip: For green waste, line your truck with a tarp first so you can just pull the entire tarp out rather than flinging your green waste little by little out from your truck. If it's regular waste, you'll be told to back into one of the spots in the facility and dump it over the side into the huge pit. I encourage friends to bring their kids to hit home lessons on recycling and minimizing waste - those monstrous mounds of garbage will impact them more than your nagging ever will. read more

I wish the boss would get off his but and call and update the website so people know that no trailers are allowed because it's already a hassle getting loaded and drive there only to find out no trailers. The security said no trailers will be allowed for the remainder g of the year. read more

This review is from 2 bad experiences with 1 particular employee 2 days in a row during weekday afternoon in last week of April 2024 between 5:45-5:50 pm. The overweight old man probably in his mind 50's at the entrance checkpoint must have years of seniority where he feels confident that he can talk to customers however he wants, close the entrance gate 15 minutes before closing time without any repercussions. The first afternoon I arrived at 5:45 and half the entrance side of the gate was already in the closed position and I drove around the gate to the checkpoint where another car was ahead of me chatting with the old man. After almost 5 minutes of waiting, the old man waved his hand at me and said "we are already closed, come back tomorrow". I said "but it is ou 5:50 pm and the station closes at 6 pm". The he yelled back and said you are not supposed to drive in when I had already closed the gate, and I yelled back with the same message that it is only 5:50 pm, not closing time yet. The car in front of me decided to cut his conversation short with the old man and waved as he drove pass the checkpoint. And when I pulled up to the check point, the rude old man told me again that I was not supposed to drive in when the gate is closed, so I responded how can I drive in if the gate was closed. He countered that I need to arrive earlier before the gate close so that he can leave work at 6 pm, rather than close the gate at6 pm. The next day at the same time, I arrive at 5:45 pm again and again the gate was half closed, when I drove up to the checkpoint the old man yelled at me "I told you not to drive in once you see the gate is closed", so I responded that if he wanted to leave work at 6 pm rather than close the gate at 6 pm, he should tell his boss to give him an earlier shift". The trouble with some county employees is that they feel their "seniority" at work gives them the right to bend work policies to suit their needs. Those type of employees should be downgraded to entry level positions before they are allowed to retire on county's pay. read more

Purging is good for your mind, body, and soul. Many of our lives are weighted down by unnecessary things that we can live without. When purging your belongings, you should always try to donate whenever possible. One person's trash is another person's treasure. But there are some things that just can't be reused, and that's where Kapaa Transfer Station becomes the savior in your life. Located on Kapaa Quarry Road, it's the most convenient location for Kaneohe and Kailua residents. If you are heading here for the first time from Pali Highway, you may miss the entrance since it sneaks up on you on your left out of nowhere. Once you do find the entrance, hang a right and stay to the right and follow the signs. Stop when you see the first security guard and tell him what you're dumping. Then proceed to the top of the hill where another employee awaits. Let him know what you have and he'll direct you to the appropriate section. Per the Opala.org website, sort your trash accordingly: Acceptable Refuse for "Combustible" bin: Paper, cardboard, cloth, plastic Plastic bags of trash (unless filled with noncombustible refuse) Wood (2" x 4" size or smaller; maximum 4' length) Roofing material (wood shingles and asphalt paper) Acceptable Refuse for "Noncombustible" bin: Metal, glass Mattresses, furniture, electronic appliances Rugs, carpeting Tires (limit 4 per load) Lumber (maximum 4' lengths) Drywall, plywood panels Roofing materials (tile) Acceptable Material for the "Green Waste" bin: Grass, leaves, branches (cut branches to four feet or less) Hedge and tree trimmings Stumps, logs (9-inch diameter maximum) Banana cuttings, coconuts, palm fronds Untreated lumber, untreated pallets Separate Storage Areas are provided at each site for the following recyclable materials: Freon appliances -- refrigerators, air conditioners Non-freon appliances -- washers, dryers, heaters, stoves Tires Auto batteries Propane tanks There is a long list of prohibited items, so if you have something that's not listed above, check opala.org to see if it's on the list of prohibited items. I haven't been to the Kapaa Transfer Station in over 10 years. I needed to drop off some used propane bottles and had a few other things with me for general disposal (some spray paint, a place of glass, the carboard box that the propane bottles were in). Signage isn't great...In fact I drove right by, but it was easy enough to turn around and go back on Kapaa Quarry Road. Once you get into the facility, there are manned checkpoints where you tell the attendant what you have to dispose of, and they tell you where to go. Disposing of the propane bottles was an easy drive up a little hill to drop them in an outdoor "bunker" that looked like a rubbish bin turned on its side. Next was the general rubbish drop. That's the one where you have to back your car into the partially enclosed area and toss your opala (rubbish) over the railing. It was super easy--tell the guys what you have, park where they say, dump & go. Only thing is, it was SO STINK! It's a dump, but still...I guess the lack of trade winds didn't help. So if you have more garbage than can fit in your standard trash can, then you can come here to dump your junk. You essentially turn into the site and go right. There's a security guy who overlooks your stuff to make sure you don't have a bloody rug from that murder you committed last night. After you pass him you go up a hill to the transfer station. The attendant will direct you where to dump your stuff. If you have just regular trash, it goes into the giant pit and is taken to H-Power to generate energy. Mattresses, scrap metal, empty propane containers, refrigerators, and green waste go into separate piles. The attendants are friendly but again if you have a bloody rug, they'll probably snitch on you. There's a huge sign that says no scavenging, but today I saw some guys taking some golf clubs from the metal pile. I guess that's a score? I dunno, they could use it as a murder weapon. Anyway, don't be lazy and leave your bulky trash out. Bring it here. read more

Arrived at 0933 and saw it was opening at 1000. Pulled up out of the way to wait. Security guard came over literally screaming at me I couldn't park there cause I was blocking the driveway (which I was not). I told him there was no need to tell and be angry. He said he was yelling because I couldn't hear him earlier. Still no need to be a jerk and continue to yell. I've been coming to this dump my entire life and never been treated badly until now. I've never seen one, but, I bet there are rats everywhere. It is so dirty and dusty that you better take all your clothes off before you go back into your house and take a hot shower when you get home. Who cares what the neighbors think if they happen to spot you. You better use lots of soap too. Don't ever wear those shoes back into the house. History: This dump is in Kailua just off of Kapaa Quarry Road. Decades ago Kapaa Quarry Road was the eyesore of Oahu. Had a car that was broken down? Park it out on Kapaa Quarry Road...and walk away from it. Old washer? dryer? stained worn out mattresses? You guessed it, take it to Kapaa Quarry Road. There was no "transfer station" there at that time. It was shocking and shameful that entire length of Kapaa Quarry Road was the unofficial dump. Current Status: Kapaa Transfer Station is part of an island wide refuse system. This huge concrete pit was engineered to sort out trash and discarded items and facilitate recycling and/or burying of trash. This is not a land fill. Some trash is taken to be burned at the H 1 power plant. Some is taken to the land fill. Metal items are recycled. Win Win !! : Not only can you clean out your house and get rid of your junk, It really feels great to do it. You know like when you get your hair cut or get your car washed. You walk around feeling like a million bucks. When you get home and you see that all that crap is gone, Yeah, it's a great feeling. Read and Sort: Look at the website. Plan you trip by sorting through things first. Check and see what is not allowed. Don't waste your time trying to bring in something that is not allowed. Check the "open to the public" hours. Service: This is self service. The guys there are to screen your items and tell you where to dump them. But, today I did see a young employee run over to a pickup truck full of old shingles. He offered the men some shovels to speed up unloading. That was unexpected but nice. Speed Dating: Let's say you met a special someone and you want to take the relationship to the next level. Plan a trip to the dump. The "dump" experience is sort of a test of that special someone's ability to deal with a noxious unpleasant situation. Their reaction and ability (or inability) to cope will tell you a lot about that person. Something to consider, plus, undressing outside together afterwards could be fun. I dont know about 'Kapaa Transfer Station', its always been The Dump. On the way in you'll usually see used furniture that somehow didnt quite make it all the way to The Dump. Somehow they 'jumped' off truck and are seen languishing on the side of the road. As you enter, a guy on a chair will ask you what you got. Drive on in and another guy will direct you to the different areas. There's the cement gulch, chock filled with unloved and broken furniture, drywall, mystery bags, and the biggest 'prize' crane youve ever seen. Another area is for compost. Then there's the Refrigerator Forest and Ovenland. I've heard people say they've dumped working fridges or dishwashers because they didnt want to deal with reselling it or just needed to get rid of it. Signs state 'no scavenging' but I guess if you know a guy who knows a guy, apparently you can hunt for parts or stuff. Bottom line, if you absolutely cannot wait for bulky item pickup and have access to a pickup truck, this is the place you take things to die. Preferably furniture or appliances, please. read more

As the lone big dawg in a small pake family I've been coming here for years to dump all my family's larger items that the one armed bandit won't take. The staff is great, always friendly and helpful and their new burnt orange shirts make them look pretty snazzy as they rock their Darrell Royal chic. The main regular (non-appliance/metal) area is elevated by a good 15 feet or so--so a fun thing to do is see how far you can chuck your trash items or see how hard you can slam them to the ground. Today I bombed a whole old wooden dresser off the top and it was just really satisfying and fun to see it explode below. A good stress reliever for sure. There used to be a semi-domesticated (like most my girlfriends) black pig here that I haven't seen for awhile. I really hope he didn't get Cecil the lioned, but given the popularity of Boar Huntah shirts at the swap meet...I know it's a real possibility. That being said the beginning of Bambi taught many of us that this is the way of life. Tip: try to segregate out your items because there are different drop zones for different kine opala. I like to put my green waste down first since it's the last stop on your way out and you can let your other items weigh the branches and leaves down. read more

AND meet really cute guys. The attendants are all smiles and gee...they are cute too! They are even open 0700 on weekends and Sunday! Hey! As they direct me to whichever pile my piles go to and I rumble away, the odiferous air up my nostrils and the foul wind in my hair makes me feel ALIVE. I just love the butt cracks bendin over in the truck next to mine as we race each other to empty our junk...maybe get coffee later? (sweet okole!) And the "Hey, you OK?" as I heft my load into the air, gettin ' out ALL my frustrations, grunting as I heave an especially heavy branch airborne off the truckbed. "Aw...you need some help?" says another guy with his opu hanging ovah his jeans and a toothless grin. So CUTE!!! Another guy spotted an old copper piece of pipe my bro left inadvertently in the bed and he traded me for it for a coooool old glass hanging lamp someone trashed. Now, THAT's the gud'ol U S of A!
