At the tender age of twelve, I became the victim of my own inexperienced and wildly asymmetrical first attempt at eyebrow plucking - a serious mistake that would leave them permanently misshapen for most of my adult life. While not disfiguring, it always gave me the appearance of being slightly surprised. Or confused. Or perpetually ready to do a number from THE PAJAMA GAME. As such, I usually favored hairstyles that covered up just one brow, so at least the self-mutilation wouldn't seem quite so noticeable. I spent years coveting the natural arch of my girlfriends' brow-lines, taking mental notes, trying to study and repeat how they seemed to float so effortlessly along the lines set forth by the bones underneath. I bought kits and instructional videos. I drew complex line graphs across my forehead in an effort to mathematically reduce the odds of botching the job. I visited Thai emporiums for expert Asian eyebrow "threading"... ...but I never could get it right. My eyebrows are blond (ish) and thin. In some places they grow like wild thistle underbrush I can't contain with a high pressure hose; in others, tiny little whispy sprigs of nothing that I have to color in with a lady face-crayon. After years of seeking professional help, I just assumed "good" eyebrows were for other people. I had all but given up. But then I found Karen Scott - and in mere minutes she cured a lifetime of eyebrow horrors! She tinted, waxed, and plucked with such precision, clipped me with such care...all the while imparting tender reassurances that I was not alone, and that my eyebrow 'condition' was indeed manageable. And whattaya know! She was right! I now have brows that follow my brow-line!! And you should SEE my glorious arch! It looks completely natural, like it's always been there, finally sets off my eyes (my best feature, imho) and makes me feel okay about taking pictures without having to pre-place my hair. I was introduced to Karen 9 years ago when I first moved to LA by my roommate (Kyle) at the time, and I haven't gone anywhere else since. Well, that's not true, but if given the choice, i wouldn't go anywhere else. I recently moved from LA to NYC and my biggest concern was not being able to have her do my eyebrows regularly. I now fly back twice a year for work, and make sure to schedule my appointment with Karen before I do anything else. She is amazing. So cool and professional. I went to Karen for the first time today for my eyebrows. I'm not a high maintenance person but really I should be doing more 'self care' stuff especially since I don't have a naturally nice brow! So after reading the great reviews on Yelp about Karen, I made an appointment. She really is great--very down to earth and her prices are very reasonable. I suppose I've avoided getting my brows arched and tinted because it just seems like such a commitment - what if you leave looking terrible. But she did a great job. She's an expert at what she's doing and guided me in the perfect direction. I really wasn't sure what I needed. I wouldn't trust anyone else with my eyebrows. Karen is mindful of any concerns you may have, but you probably won't need to say a word. She took my overgrown brows and gave them shape without making them look too thin for my face. She worked quickly with minimal guidance. After my first appointment, I had several people tell me I looked fantastic, but they couldn't pinpoint what exactly I'd changed. And as far as eyebrows go, I think that's exactly what you want - your whole face looks better, but it's not obvious that you've "done" anything. Karen's the best in the city. I went to her as a recommendation from a friend to have my makeup done a few years ago, and have gone to her for such occasions ever since. Karen is an artist. She sculpts your eyebrows to create a more gentle beautiful you. I have been her client for +3 years. At the time my brows were thin and over-plucked by a heavy handed waxer at a beauty salon. As a result, my brows had an "angry" expression. Anyway, with oversight by Karen, my eyebrows are fuller and the curve is gentler giving me a happier expression. I highly recommend Karen. Eyebrows are her speciality, so she knows her stuff. In addition, she sells her own line of cosmetics. Be sure to allow her to choose the colors that she thinks are best for you. She recommended a "coppery" lipgloss for me. At first I was resistant because I usually wear pinks, but I have received MANY compliments on this color. I believe we all get stuck in ruts from time-to-time. Let Karen take care of your eyebrows and makeup and you will be radiant. (PS. Also, follow her advice and don't pluck between appts, and for best results, see her for a few sessions before deciding if it works or not.
