On 1/21/26, I took my son to see Dr. Liu for the new crown placement visit. I was waiting in the front lobby while my son was receiving treatment by Dr. Liu. After my son came out, I asked him if the treatment was done, he said he did not know and Doctor Liu did not come to talk to me either. So I checked with the front desk to see if we were ready to go home. The front desk lady then went to talk to Dr. Liu and I followed her. Dr. Liu was working on other patients, and when she saw me come in, she then told me the new crown had an open margin which needed to be redone. At that point I was very shocked. Why did the doctor put on the open margin crown permanently on my son which she already knew? She did not proactively come out to talk to me for this issue instead of I found out by asking her myself. On 1/27/26, Dr Liu called me to explain why she put on the open margin crown. She said she did not see the open margin issue from the pre cementation xray. She saw the open margin after she cemented the crown. She even said it is better to put on the defect permanent crown than keeping my son with another temporary crown in her opinion which I don't agree with. On 3/12/26, I decided to request the pre-and-post cementation x-rays from Dr. Liu's office to verify if what she said was true. After I received the 2 xrays from the office, I was shocked to find out the pre cementation xray already showed an open margin on the new crown. But Dr. Liu still chose to put that crown on my son's tooth permanently even though the pre xray already showed the open margin. She told me on 1/27/26 that she did not see the open margin from the pre cementation xray which is a lie. Her practice was below the standard of care for my son. She ignored the patient's informed consent right. She proceeded with a permanent cementation while knowing a defect exists--without informing me and my son. I don't want to go back to her office because I lost trust. In the meantime, I need to pay out of pocket to other dentist to redo the crown again. It is a big damage to my son's tooth, my cost and time. My son is only 17 years old; he got his first crown on 04/2023. And because of doctor Dr. Karen Liu's negligence of the defective crown and denied my right to make an informed decision about my son's treatment, he needs to redo the crown for the same tooth twice. Now his tooth is very sensitive and weak, I don't know if his tooth can be restorable in the long run. It is a very frustrating experience. read more

They have shady billing practices! Avoid going here and find some other place to go that will be upfront and transparent about whether or not they are in-network for your insurance, or will provide you an estimate of your potential out of pocket costs. I was referred to them by my dentist for a gum recession consultation and visited an office to make an appointment in December 2023. They took down my insurance information and my referral, and confirmed the consultation would be covered by my insurance. I made an appointment for February 2024. When I arrived to check-in for my appointment, I confirmed again they had all my insurance information, and that I was covered. They assured me that I was. I am eventually seen by the doctor for about 10-15 mins, she tells me my case isn't extreme enough to recommend any surgery, and says she will send notes to my dentist for other options. I visited my dentist a few months later mid-June 2024, and they said they never received anything. Late June 2024, I receive a bill in the mail for about $112 for the balance of the consultation fee not covered by my insurance. Turns out they were not in my network, but never told me that when I asked if they accepted my insurance and if I was covered. They billed my insurance $177, but since they are out of network, insurance would only agree to cover an amount equal to the average price of similar services at in-network providers in the area, which turns out is closer to $46, they paid 80% of that, and I ended up with a surprise bill of about $112. I called their office to complain about how I was never provided an estimate upfront about what my bill would be if insurance did not cover the cost, and was never told they are out of network each time I asked them if they accepted my insurance. They agreed to drop the bill to $80 for the confusion, apologized for not providing an estimate of the potential cost which they said they usually do, so I paid. I still feel ripped off, and like what they did was shady. Find a provider in-network that will give you an estimate of your coverage upfront, instead of going to this place that will assure you that you're covered, and later say you are not. read more

When we recommended by friend to go see a doctor here , we trust each other , we don't make statements about, we agree $800 and covering all the surgery this kinda shit ) I literally swipe my card and pay for it and get just one receipt saying I pay $800 ! And get the treatment done! I was happy and even recommended couple friends to go see her as well ! But did not expect after 14 months . I got a bill saying I own her $99.50 . And it billed me this year May 2022 ! I texted her and asked what's going on. I did not even see her for a year! Dr. Liu said she waived my consultation bill until 10 months later she sent me the bill asking me to pay it! It was $170 for a single consultation! After two phone calls with her office and one call with herself, she asked me to pay $100. If you don't have any written agreement with her, please be aware that you may have a remaining balance from her even it is 10 months! I was referred to Dr. Liu for two teeth extraction surgery. Called her office clearly saying that I need to get two teeth extracted and booked a appointment for surgery. They didn't tell me the appointment was only a consultation. The morning at 9 am on 7/12/2022, I realized it was a consultation until my appointment. I said I didn't know it's a consultation because I asked a day off work for surgery. She said she never do surgery for a first time patient and told me to come back at 4 pm as she will be available for the surgery. The consultation time took around 10 minutes including my tooth condition and estimation fee for surgery. I see the patient's portion is $299.9. After calling my insurance provider, it turned out her estimation isn't correct and my insurance company only pay $382.2. That afternoon I asked her regarding the estimation. She told me estimation was based on Delta not Gurdian (my insurance) so I will have to pay off the remaining $500.8 not $299.9. My portion almost get doubled and this is an addition to the insurance pay. I asked why she didn't tell me earlier that her estimation was not correct. She said her office estimation is only based on Delta insurance and she didn't know how much my insurance pay. She said I am out of network and didn't have good insurance (my insurance was actually perfect as I only paid $109.2 in addition to the insurance paid at another dentist office for two teeth extraction surgery later). She asked me to pay around $400 cash with the rest insurance pays and mentioned I won't need to pay for that morning's consultation fee. Then I asked if I could pay less. She was angry by telling her assistant to tell me that she won't do any surgery for me and refused to see me again. I asked if I still need to pay for that morning's consultation fee. She said yes then I begged to get the surgery done as the consultation is expensive. I'd like to pay for the $400 surgery as it could avoid consultation fee. She then told the assistant to tell me she will only bill to my insurance and will not ask me for any additional cash payment! I was let go. I wasted a whole day without having the surgery done! I felt fair as she waived the consultation fee. My insurance paid her $16.8 on 7/22/2021. I haven't received any bill from her office until 5/16/2022, 10 months later after the consultation at 7/12/2021. The consultation bill of $170! I was so anxious that I called her office on 5/23 explained what happened regarding the waived bill. The operator told me she will ask Dr. Liu and will call me back. I called again on 5/25, the operator told me Dr. Liu will give me a call to discuss about it. On 5/26, I finally got a call from Dr. Liu and explained the situation again. She said she doesn't remember what happened before and said I can get a discount rate of paying $100. I said that I booked for surgery and I was not informed for the consultation. She said it's common sense that the first time visit is always consultation. (I have seen other doctors does surgery the first time. She said most Chinese didn't aware about consultation.) She said $16.8 is not even enough to cover the basic cost of disinfect process for the consultation...Anyway, the whole conversation took around 20 minutes. Since $16.8 was paid by insurance, I will need to pay the rest of $83.2. Anyway, I agreed to pay the amount as I am so tired with her dealing all of these matters. They are not upfront about what or who they are contracted with. Extremely underhanded- 3 months later a bill pops up for a cleaning (not even deep cleaning) and regular X-rays (not even panoramic). I wouldn't recommend using them, due to this. When you give them your insurance information prior to your appointment (they ask for this), they have a ample time to disclose. I had a great experience getting my cleaning with Dr. Lai this past weekend. He took his time during my cleaning, explaining and answering all the questions I had. He would constantly check in on me during my cleaning to make sure I was doing ok. He was very friendly and I did not get the feeling that he was rushing to move on to another patient. We went over the fillings he recommends for me to get, and which ones I can hold off on. He was not pushy about it and you can tell that he truly cares about the health of my teeth. Although he looks young, I learned that he graduated from UCLA and served as a dentist in the military and is there on Saturdays to help Dr. Liu. All the staff in the office were very friendly and the office was very clean. This visit was during COVID, and I did feel very safe there. The office has implemented parameters to keep their patients safe, such as having me sanitize my hands when I entered the office, did a temperature and oxygen check on me. There was no one else in the waiting area (but the chairs were also spaced out). When I was seated for my cleaning, I only saw another patient inside (two rooms away from where I was seated). Unfortunately, they never claimed to the insurance company until I kept on asking my dental insurance and they said claims were never sent in over two months. She has done numerous tooth fillings, root canals, tooth implant, gum disease treatments, in addition to routine teeth cleaning for me over the years and I am extremely happy with her work. She has state of art clinics and strives to keep up with the newest technologies in dental profession. Her fees are totally reasonable within her profession. I would give no star if I could. I was told on the phone a second opinion on bone graft was $50-$120 and if I brought my own x-rays with no probing around was done would be $50 - so I just made the appointment for that. Less than 24 hours before the appointment, I was told to go in 30 min early but Dr Liu were not even ready to see me until 45 minutes later. I told her I didn't want probing around but only wanted a second opinion and if she would do a class one furcation bone graft and if she could then I would switch to her for the treatment. She told me she would not do it because it would not last, BUT she wanted to look at my tooth and she started probing, but I told her to stop that because I didn't want probing if she couldn't do the bone graft; BUT she continued probing around and refused to answer the second opinion questions I asked her. After less than 10 minutes she walked out to the front desk and I followed. I was told to pay $100 for the second opinion. Despite the dispute, she still forced me to pay $100. What a robbery of Dr Karen Jong Liu with her dishonesty and unprofessional chair-side manner. I am also skeptical about Dr Liu's periodontal knowledge, because she didn't know the furcation bone graft material I asked her about.
