In all my life, I have never experienced a Dentist as capable and professional as Dr Chapokas. Over the years, he has extracted several teeth of mine and I never felt any pain - from the numbing needle to the extractions to my process of healing. No pain! Last week, my surgery for new teeth was quite the successful experience. I was under general anesthesia as Dr Chapokas worked a bone on the top gums and reshaped my bottom gum line to accommodate my new teeth for the installed posts. I was again impressed. I woke up groggy but I had no pain; and to this day, 6 days later, no pain. My new set of teeth look good, feel good and practical for my digestive well being. This yelp review is long over due but I can't say enough amazing things about Dr. Chapokas and his staff. I truly looked forward to every visit with them. I went through a pretty intensive process with implants, gum grafts and finally a bridge. (Previous Trauma accident). Every employee made me feel like family and helped me with the floods of emotions that I would have. (Being scared, nervous and happy.) Dr. Chapokas is beyond detail oriented and precise. The color matching process was fun and right on point. Even during the pandemic when most businesses were closed down, they still managed to provide a safe environment for his patients. I agree with the other reviews posted. On several points. I have had the need to sit in many dental chairs over the years. Every dentist, upon seeing my mouth for the first time always comments appreciatively about the quality of dentistry. So, I know a little about dentists, and dental procedures. While I've only been here twice since I relocated to San Diego (once for hygienic cleaning, and once to repair a cracked crown), both visits have been most positive. This latest visit was to have Dr. McDonald either replace or smooth out a cracked porcelain crown. Many dentists would have suggested replacing the crown, at a cost of ~$1,000, but Dr. McDonald suggested simply smoothing out the rough part, since it was not front and center. Therefore, my office visit was 15 minutes, and only $62. I'm due for my 2nd cleaning in a few weeks, and my wife, who is even pickier than I about dental care, also is very comfortable about returning!! read more

My father is 99 years old and had to have quite a few teeth pulled due to decay. Dad's regular dentist recommended that we see Dr Chapokas to see what can be done since Dad's remaining teeth are in pretty bad shape. I kind of dreaded taking my Dad to the appointment because I thought it was going to be nothing but bad news. The best dental experience! 3 years ago I had implant surgery out of area, recently one became loose, so my dentist referred me to Dr. Chapokas for an evaluation. The office staff was great, Lamar emailed patient info requests ahead of time and they also requested information from the original oral surgeon. They pre-ordered the parts and everything was ready upon my arrival. He knew exactly what the issue was, explained it fully and completed the work within 20 minutes. He is so kind and only charged the minimal consult fee. Great experience, friendly vibe combined with competence, I highly recommend Dr. Chapokas. read more

Dr. Chapokas is absolutely amazing. I had a problem with an cracked tooth that became infected. Rather than doing a root canal which had a high chance of failing I opted for an implant. Dr. Chapokas is extremely knowledgable and has a wonderful and caring attitude. He walked me through the whole procedure and provided me with a treatment plan which included costs from start to finish, so no surprise charges. If I could, I would rate less than 1 star! When I first started going to Dr. Chapokas; I loved him, his office and his staff; so accommodating, informative and friendly. So much that I wanted to switch all of my dental services to his office! A couple years ago, this doctor's office made an upper partial for me. The partial filled in the gaps where I had two missing teeth. I went to the appt for the final fitting and pick up. All said and done, I cried when I saw how it looked. So, the doctor says to me, "this is only a partial and it's not your permanent solution. But since you are not satisfied, I will take the cost of this partial and apply the cost to your implants." I left his office fairly satisfied. Fast forward to now: 1) I started receiving a bill for payment in full for the partial that he created. 2) I have not yet been able to afford the two implants but plan on it sometime in the near future. 3) the partial has a visible crack, extending from the top to the bottom. I also have a lower partial created by a different dentist. I made an appt with Dr. Chapokas' office to look at and fix the crack. And to add a tooth to my lower partial (from a recent lost lower tooth). I arrive for my appt; the front office staff tell me that I need to pay in full for the upper partial and the lower partial addition before I will be seen by the doctor. Staff states, "we've sent you several statements in the mail and you have never responded." With tears in my eyes, I had to call and find family and friends willing to pay my dentist bill and give their credit card information over the phone to staff. What a horrible and humiliating experience this was for me!! Seeing other patients in the waiting room area while I'm struggling, fighting back tears; calling people to pay my bill, which most of that bill total was promised for my future implants. Not cool! With the help of family and friends, I will was able to pay the entire amount and see the doctor. So, the next appt to pick up the lower partial addition. The fit was a little loose so he adjusted the wire of the anchor tooth. The upper partial needed adjustment as well (upper has been adjusted many times over the last couple years). I asked him to adjust the upper as well, like he's done in the past. He states, "I'm not going to adjust it this time. Trust me, I've been doing this for a long time and I know what I'm doing." I then asked him about the crack and when he'll be able to fix it for me. He says, "oh, I was focused on the lower addition and didn't look at the upper partial." So, not even a week later, I was eating a chicken sandwich when I noticed that my lower partial was out & stuck to my bread. Strange, I inspect and discover that my anchor tooth is stuck in my lower partial. Needless to say, my lower partial will not stay in place. I called the office many, many times and each time I'm informed that "the person that can help me is with another client." I'm told, "I'll take your name & number and have her call you right back." I never once received a return call. This went on for about five days. I finally call and they put me on hold (like usual), this time Dr. Chapokas is on. He says, "I hear you broke your partial." I replied, "NO, I did not break a partial." I then began explaining the issue to him, in detail, as I had EACH & EVERY time I spoke with his office staff; acting like they couldn't comprehend what I was saying, as if I was speaking a language they cannot understand. So incredibly frustrating! I arrive for my appt but the front office staff inform me that Dr. Chapokas left the office but will be back soon. I saw the doctor but he refused to fix the upper partial. He blamed the lower partial on me, starting that, "I asked him to do it" and once I "take care of a few other teeth, he will fix both partials." I will never go back to that office! read more

The best given most importantly he is one of the most competent in the United States given his expertise combines the specialty services of a Periodontist and Prosthodontist into one; also, he cares and is simply a wonderful person. I am THRILLED to find Dr. Chapokas after having a terrible experience with another periodontist. My dentist recommended I consider gum grafts. When I went to the other periodontist, he was irritated with my questions. At one point, he actually told me, "If you don't care if your teeth fall out, you can wait as long as you want." He refused to give me a treatment plan to take with me for comparison (until I insisted), and told me the procedure would cost 2600--NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE. Dr. Chapokas was AMAZING. Answered all my questions. Even drew diagrams to help me understand. He explained the latest research and really took the time to help me understand my gum health. Best part, his price was HALF of what the other doctor quoted. His staff, Alex and Andrea were just as incredible. They were extremely warm and welcoming. Alex brought me fresh brewed Starbucks while I filled out my new patient information. Andrea called my insurance company on the spot, to find out if the procedure was covered. IT WAS. 100 %. After my implant was placed I was referred to Dr. Chapokas. We are moving in just under two months but the scheduler informed me that would be enough time to put on the crown and do the coloring to match up the teeth. When I had my first visit they informed me that I had to pay $225 upfront for my first consult before I could see the dentist. I informed them that I am not even sure I want to see him yet as I have a few questions to ask. I read a few reviews and was uncertain about a few issues and wanted to get some information on what type of implant would be used. I have done my research and wanted to make sure it was the best possible implant/crown since it was my front tooth. I told them I am not going to pay $225 yet until I can at least talk to Dr. Chapokas. The staff after a few minutes brought me back where I was able to speak with the doctor. I asked him what implant he uses and how his process works. He described the implant and that the coloring process could take multiple visits. He then informed me that if I was moving in June he would not be able to complete his work in time. I told him thank you for being honest and not starting the job and then just having me finish it in North Carolina. When I was walking out the office staff told me they needed my payment for the consultation fee of $225. I said are you serious? The only consultation he did was telling me his process would take too long and he could not do it. I informed them that I would not have even walked through your front door if your scheduler would not would have told me there would not be enough time to do this. I said talk Dr Chapokas because there's no way I'm paying this fee. They then brought me back to his office where he informed me I have to get paid something because I consulted with you. He asked me what do I think would be fair. He then said how about if we split it. I could not believe this was even happening. I said fine I paid the bill and left. I left a message for my referring dentist and I told his staff that he gets a lot of referrals from my dentist and I'm going to let them know about this. On my drive home I got a phone call from Dr. Chapokas. He said," Hey BRO don't worry about the consultation fee even though I did consult with you I'm not going to charge you. I said let me tell you my side of the story bro, you never even looked in my mouth let alone evaluated me. You want to charge me for you telling me you can't do the work in time despite the fact that your staff said you would be able to do it prior to scheduling. This is ridiculous and I don't appreciate you calling me bro when I've been very professional to you. He actually then called again back to apologize. I can't speak for his quality of work but this experience was unacceptable and unprofes. Brett My response to Dr Chapokas: Dr Chapokas Clearly you do not understand or want to understand my concern. Instead of being defensive I would have a lot more respect for you if you just acknowledge what happened. After my periodontist referred me to you, I called your staff and told them my situation and timeline and that I would be moving in the first part of June but was hoping to have an implant done prior to the move. After checking with you, your receptionist said that would be no problem and you would have ample time to do my implant. The bottom line is I would have never walked in your front door if your office staff would have told me that you would not be able to do the work in the that timeframe. And for the record, the 'work' you did giving me a referral in North Carolina consisted of giving me a website address. The reality is my time is valuable also, yet I never suggested charging you for the unnecessary time I took off work to drive 45 minutes each way and wait unnecessarily in your office. While you did eventually waive my charges, it was only after I told you I was going to let my referring periodontist know what happened. Brett read more

Dr. McDonald is great, and deserves 5 stars as a dentist; no doubt. However, the office staff is hurting his business. The billing system is awful. After a couple of years seeing him, I needed a crown, and asked about the costs and insurance beforehand. I was told all but a little would be covered. Great; so we set an appointment for December, and the procedure went well. Then I got a huge bill, which didn't seem right. I called in and Ebony said that they may have forgotten to bill the insurance company, so she would look into it and call back the next day. She didn't. I figured the insurance covered it, but a couple months later I called in to check. They finally billed the insurance company, but they wanted over $500 from me, too. Wait, what? That's not at all what I was told earlier. I called to discuss, and was told I'd be called back the next day. Again; no call. Not very professional. The next time I called, I was told it was all cleared up, and my balance was 0. Great. Months later, I received a bill showing I owed over $500 that was past due. When I called to tell them the story, I was given huge attitude. At that point they were merging with yet another dentist and things were changing. Oh, boy. Sheldon is a real piece of work. He was condescending, gave attitude, and wouldn't listen much, so I resorted to e-mail. I also called the insurance company to try to sort things out. They also said I owed nothing at first, and later in the game, they said that I was not fully covered, because the procedure was done in December. Had it been done in January, I would have been fully covered. What???? The dental office has complete access to that information; they should have known, and they gave me false information. Then they started threatening me with collections. Since I have amazing credit, I didn't want that to happen, and just gave in and paid it. The office staff caused a lot of frustration and ended up costing me hundreds, when I was told it would be $0. It also led me to find another dentist, who turned out to be terrible. I picked the closest one to home that dealt with my insurance. I was in pain and didn't use half my mouth for months, while having a filling "adjusted" 5 times with only minor improvement. I missed having a good dentist, so found one who solved the issue in less than a week (with a root canal surgery and nice crown). Bottom line; Dr. McDonald is great, but dealing with an incompetent and smug staff who cost me hundreds more than they said isn't cool. I hope they get someone competent and service-oriented to do the billing. read more

Dr. McDonald has been my Orthodonist for 17 years now, since th ripe age of 16. I have always had genetic issues with my teeth, all my baby teeth pulled out, cavities, braces, a few crowns... He has always been so gentle, honest and speedy with the procedures. Now i have kids of my own and will bring them here too once they are old enough. I had dental work done in 2015 and, through no fault of theirs, I needed to have the work re-checked. Dr. Chapokas is WONDERFUL and puts my money where his mouth is. He evaluated the problem, was as frustrated as I was, and worked hard to make it happen. His dental assistant, Oliver, was as nice as he could be, and helped me through the process. Dr. McDonald also came into the room to work his magic with a dental instrument that can be found in only two dental offices in San Diego. Dr. McDonald did a fabulous job changing my old silver filling & with my onlay prep. .It was quick, painless, and aaahhh--mayyy--zzing! He is very conservative with his treatment plan. He also fixed my other tooth from a previous dentist work because it was a little high and might cause some fracture free of charge. This is the best dental clinic I have ever been not to mention their clean, comfy dental chairs and hi-tech equipments. . .My dental insurance (CIGNA) is out-of-network and I don't mind paying extra co-pay knowing that the quality of dental procedures I'm getting is par excellence and will last 30 years and beyond. Kudos to all the staff especially to Arlene for taking care of my pre authorization from my insurance company, providing me with all the informations I need regarding the plan and co-payment expenses. My previous dentist, who shall remain unnamed, was charging me a small fortune and my first child. It was time for a change. I was referred to Dr. McDonald by a friend. Absolutely the best decision I've made in a while. I went in for what could have been a very expensive crown and Dr. McDonald decided I was a good candidate for a porcelain implant instead. I was a patient of Dr. Chapokas and received decent care from his office staff and Dr. Chapokas while there. Issues arose so I chose to move on to another periodontist with whom I am very happy. My present periodontist, as well as being professional, reduces my charges relative to the fact that I am private pay and the office is relieved of billing an insurance company, something the Chapokas office did not do. Additionally, Dr. Chapokas's office has still not communicated with me about the warranty status of an implant that was submitted to the maker over a year ago although I have called several times over a long period which has been distressing; the warranty was for an implant I'd received years prior to my time with this office, applied to work I'd paid for personally and separate from this practice, so my relationship with this office has been disappointing. read more

Doesn't get much better than this place. Everyone is friendly and they do great work.
