Chicken Shawarma Plate and Macarona Bechemal
    Natalie C.

After visiting a pumpkin patch farm in Milton, we stopped by Mississauga to have dinner. We decided to try something new - Egyptian cuisine! My first impression of this restaurant was that it was very family friendly as there were several larger groups with children. However, near the end of our meal, there was a party of 2 using the shisha and the children were still around. I definitely come from a different culture (East Asia) where shisha was exclusively found in pubs, bars and clubs (e.g adult only venues), so it was definitely a little shocking to me. Since my husband and I don't eat lamb, we ordered tamiya (similar to falafel), chicken shawarma plate and macarona bechemal. The chicken shawarma plate was decent for its price. The chicken meat was cut in strips instead of shaved, which was a bit different to what I'm used to, but I am new to Egyptian cuisine! The tamiya were served just like falafel, round shaped and with a side of tahini. I did fine it a tad dry (maybe overfried?) The macarona bechemal was decedant. It was loaded with a creamy bechemal sauce and a layer of grilled cheese. There were bits of ground beef to give the dish more texture. I do wish they stated in the menu that they incorporate lamb fat in the dish, as the gamey flavour hit us on our first bite. For non lamb eaters, the gamey flavour was acceptable but we did start picking out the ground beef half way through the dish. Overall, the service was attentive and the dishes came at a good pace.

Went for a Saturday brunch. They have a makeshift shade outside of the restaurant, referred as patio seating. Service is average. We had the veggie omelette and mixed grill. You may like to inform them about salt level unless you like very salty food. Overall I would rate the food 3 stars, and overall experience 2.5 stars.

I was excited to try this new place, but they definitely didn't wake up for Saturday lunch time service. We waited to sit down; the place was empty and no server was seen. After we sat down, we realized the music was super loud for an Egyptian restaurant. The water was served promptly and then everything went downhill. For being their only 2 customers for the next hour and like 2 takeout orders that we saw, we waited for our food for a very long time. To make matters worse, my partner saw our meals on the kitchen counter and didn't mention it to me for awhile. No server was seen. So he went and got our 2 plates from the kitchen counter without anyone seeing him or saying something!!! What??? Now we have to serve ourselves at a restaurant?!?! Sadly, the food was already cold. His chicken had no flavour and was dry. He had to use my garlic sauce. My kafta meal with rice had a similar taste to his. No flavour!! No spices!! The side salad was ok. The server came by, in shock that we were eating. We told her what happened and she shyly said sorry. No discount was given or any other acknowledgement. Very bad service when most restaurants do very well during the weekend. Food, blah. Will not ever return. Waste of time. Even it's for free, I'll rather eat something better. Sorry.

Finally got to try Karioka Cuisine for dine in. I had a much better experience and found the food to be tastier than when I had first tried. Previously, I got mansaf for takeout and did not like the taste of the meal but this time, I really enjoyed the chicken. I love how the restaurant incorporates aspects from different countries and gives you the experience of stepping into Egyptian streets with their patio and the lively vibe they've recreated. The front where you place your order if you're getting takeout is the "French side" of the restaurant, with a wide variety of French pastries to choose from. At the back, the arabic seating was recreated, along with details such as camels as decor. I love the three murals displaying 3 different places in Egypt and the open kitchen concept so you can see your food being prepared fresh. I would love to go back to try more of the dishes and the drinks as well. The juices are made from fresh fruits in house. The staff were very friendly and helpful.

If you're looking for an Egyptian coffee shop as authentic as it gets, you've hit the jackpot with this place. It has an awesome vibe, set up and service. The workers are very welcoming and make you feel like home. Their food is always fresh, takes a bit of time to make but it comes out very tasty and straight out of the oven. My favourite is always to ask the, what would they order and they always give you the best options on their menu.

I tried a variety of the meats and they were cooked to perfection--tender, flavorful, and well balanced with just the right spices and sauces. Nothing was dry, which made every bite enjoyable. Even though it was busy, the service was quick and very welcoming. The restaurant itself is spotless and clearly well maintained. They also offer traditional desserts like Om Ali, knefe, and rice pudding. If you want a more relaxed café vibe afterward, there's a café in the same parking lot run by the same owners with very comfortable seating and even a prayer room. Overall, a wonderful experience that definitely did not disappoint. I'll absolutely be back.

I remember looking over and thinking, "What is this place that's so full of life?" It was bustling with people and had such a great energy. I had never tried Egyptian food before, but I was feeling a little adventurous. I'm really glad I did. A few dishes were recommended, but I was told the Koshari is beloved in Egypt, so that's what I ordered. Be prepared for a bit of a carb coma, but it's absolutely worth it. It was delicious. The mix of pasta, rice, lentils, chickpeas, and crispy fried onions worked surprisingly well together, especially with the sauces they give you. I'll definitely be back the next time I'm in Toronto.

Karas bills itself as authentic Egyptian food that is entirely charcoal-grilled. I tried 2 dishes: grilled chicken & grilled minced lamb. Both dishes cost me $50 and is worth less than $20! Here's why: 1) the portions were miserly! For a $30 plate (with tax), take a look at the photo - 4 tiny balls of minced lamb sitting morosely on the plate. 8 bites in total! 2) the meats were as dry as OLD SHOES! Charcoal grilling is an art form. The lamb, which was supposedly wrapped in lamb fat, should have been succulent and juicy. Instead, as the 2nd photo shows, it was burnt and very, very dry. 3) the chicken was no better. Dry to the point of being stringy and chewy. It was supposed to be dark meat (leg), but it was so dry I couldn't even tell if it was dark or white meat. 4) For this miserable dinner, I waited a full 28 minutes - when I was there at 4pm and I was the only 1 of 2 customers. Unacceptable! This was a real disappointment, and a total let down, because Karas shawarma (by the same Owner) was actually quite decent, which was why I decided to try their restaurant location. My verdict: Eat at Karas shawarma, when they have their 2 wraps for $20 promo on Mondays. That's worth eating for that price. But Karas Restaurant most definitely is NOT worth eating at - at this price point & for such bad quality!

Do be prepared for a bit of a wait. We came on a Monday at noon and still waited 30 minutes. Lentil Soup Probably the biggest surprise for me. The soup has the perfect texture: silky but substantial. It's well-spiced and reminds me of South Asian flavors (rasam, to be specific). The accompanying bread and pickles were just the cherry on top! Cairo Classic I had low expectations for this dish, since it seems to be 90% beans. But once again, I was shocked by how flavorful everything was. It came with a single falafel, which may be one of the best falafels I've ever had. If I came back, I'd opt for the falafel dish over this one. Maha's Mind-blowing Chicken The chicken really is mind-blowing. I found the form factor a bit confusing, it seems to be more for presentation than practicality. But the flavors are exceptional.

The owner of the place, Maha, was also extremely pleasant going around tables and chatting with the customers. The restaurant space was a little tight, but it has a lot of character. It gives a very welcoming and homey feel. One minor gripe I have is that the utensils appear to be sealed or covered the wrong way. It was the ends of the spoon and fork that was covered with napkin and not the actual surfaces that come into contact with food. The ends of utensils that actually come in contact with the food and mouth just lie there directly on top of the dining table which is not the most sanitary. As for the food, the food serving size of the meal is great and is usually more than enough for a person. Ordering appetizers on top of the brunch meals will be good for only those that are heavy eaters. For food taste, I personally would rate it as OK to good. It was not bad, but just not something I would personally consider to rank as among my favorite breakfast fare. I enjoyed it more for the novelty of trying something different which is Egyptian food. The food was also a little on the pricey side. We (group of 2) came in at 5 minutes after 10 on a Sunday morning and were lucky enough to find seating (2 tables that can seat 4). When we finished and left at 11AM, there was already a long lineup outside.
