While traveling across Louisiana T-Boy's Slaughter House Meat Market and Grocery was definitely on…read moremy list to stop at, so I loaded up my Yeti and headed to Mamou. When I arrived it was exactly how I imagined it, this old school family business reminded me of my childhood growing up in Louisiana, it's probably one of the most unpretentious places you could ever visit this is a true treasure that still embraces the cajun culture. Of course I wanted a little of everything, the fresh unpackaged butchered meats, the packaged seasoned meats including things like tame rabbit, a variety of tassos, cracklins and some of the best boudin on the planet. I must have walked around this store at least 3 times and I'm sure I didn't see it all - I had to keep in mind we were traveling in the RV and planned to be on the road for more than a month after leaving here so space is limited but there are somethings that are a must buy when the opportunity presents itself. The staff here is amazing so friendly and helpful and they can answer all your questions if your not familiar with all the items on display fortunately I was able to explain things to my girl who was in awe of the offerings here. I definitely wasn't leaving here without getting some of the most mouthwatering fresh center cut pork chops, a few other specialty items and of course their delicious boudin. This place definitely deserves a bookmark and if are anywhere within 50 miles or more of this wonderful store you have to get here - this is a rare find and a gem in this community...

The Superette - Excellent boudin. If you get it cut, it's a mess.

After leaving Baton Rouge heading west on I-10 the traffic situation deteriorated quickly as I…read moreapproached the Atchafalaya Basin due to an accident and I knew I needed to find an alternative route or risk sitting in traffic for hours. I took the Route 411 exit and headed towards Frogmore to catch Highway 190 through the heart of Cajun Country - there is so much to see and memories to reflect upon traveling this historic route, to most it might seem somewhat boring but the sugar cane, rice fields and crawfish farms are beautiful in my eyes. This part of Louisiana still has my heart and still represents the culture I still cherish and is home to the people I love. The scenic drive across the Atchafalaya River at Krotz Springs through Opelousas brings you to Eunice a community built on tradition where contracts are still sealed with a handshake and you always get greeted with a hug and a kiss. It would be impossible for me to drive through here without stopping for some boudin or cracklins so where better to go get some authentic Cajun cuisine than at the Eunice Superette on a Saturday morning. This place never disappoints the delicious smells of something cooking in the back surrounds you as you walk through the doors and that all familiar sound of that glorious Cajun Music piped throughout the store makes it impossible not to smile and puts a little two step in your gait. Taking a tour of the meat case is a tour you'll likely never forget, most of the offering are seasoned, stuffed and smoked and the aromas permeates the glass case it seems. The meats here are butchered locally with great care, the cuts are traditional and not something you'll find at most retail groceries outlets. Today my interest is in the fresh hot cracklins a little snack for the road - this uniformly chopped pork belly is like nothing else on the planet the fat is rendered down until the finish product is crispy then covered in a spicy cajun seasoning and placed in a small brown paper sack its absolutely delicious- my dad made these at home long before they became a delicacy fetching twenty dollars a pound. The staff here was so friendly and probably family, always providing more than you'd ever expect and always a greeting with a big smile and a goodbye with a "take care now". There are somethings you hope will never change and this is one of those treasures that still feels like it did when I was a kid. This is what a hometown business should feel like...

It is pronounced Lag-Knee-App, make sure you say it that way a lot when you come visit us. All the cool kids do. Best Stop is a must stop for anyone road tripping along I-10 in Louisiana. Who needs a Bucees when you have this place. The aforementioned boudin balls are the best road trip snack ever. Fried spicy, cheesy, delectable delights. On my most recent visit, I got their in house made beef jerky, homemade pork skins, the boudin balls and some jalapeno honey mustard to take home. All of it wonderful. One of my buddies who I was road tripping with, was smart enough to bring a cooler. He bought frozen boudin balls, a few pounds of boudin, some smoked sausage and some sort of stuffed chicken. This place has all kinds of meat! I was jealous and I will definitely bring a cooler next time.
