Tonight was my last night in Amsterdam and so I wanted to really savor my last meal. I read raving reviews about Kartika and immediately bookmarked it as my last supper in AMS. Unfortunately, the entire experience - the service from the staff and the entire meal was all too disappointing. I came in solo and before I was even seated, the waiter gave me the "special" along with the credit card spend requirement of $25 euros and asked if I was comfortable with it all. Again, I was taken by surprise since I didn't even get to sit down to peruse the menu. It seemed as though it was the go-to selection to get the solo diners to eat quickly and boot them out. Anyway, I finally sat, my food was placed in front of me and each bite didn't get any better than the last bite. I ended up eating only 1/2 of my $25 worth of a plate of food. There was also another gentleman that came in solo and the waiter rehearsed the same $25 speed through strategy and of course the guy looked confused and said "ooook?" Again, super bummed that this was my last meal in Amsterdam - thank goodness I've had my share of good food throughout my trip to reminisce about. read more

We were in town for two days and had a craving for Indonesian food. They don't seem to take reservations and other suggested restaurants were booked out, so we showed up on a rainy evening and lucked out with the last table available. The host politely informed us there were two set menus, and let our kid eat from ours which was perfect. Didn't need to make any decisions, just tucked into an amazing set of dishes, each as tasty as the next! Good beer selections too. Fantastic staff, wonderful food! Our wait staff was refreshingly friendly, attentive and kind. They both were very knowledgable about the food being served and eager to answer any questions we had. Our waiter explained what each dish course consisted of and what to expect. We have the Ramayana rice table which provided an excellent first experience to Indonesian cuisine. With a drink, it came to about $20 per person for much more food than you needed to be happily full, and for the quality, it was a steal. We enjoyed the fork tender beef stew, which was slightly sweet like a mole sauce, and the spicy chicken filet. The toasted coconut was great with the rice and added a nice, lightly sweet, crunch. Very poor customer service. We were visiting Amsterdam last month and based on the positive reviews online, we thought Kartika is a restaurant to try. When I visited their website, as it was advised to call them to make reservation, I called them several times everyday for a week, but no one ever picked up the phone. No option for email communication. Without reservation we visited the restaurant upon arrival to Amsterdam and fortunately could find a table. The owner was very rude and angry with no reasons we can think of, and I could understand why he never picks up the phone; he probably is angry everyday with his life, or something. We did not care eating in this restaurant anymore and just left. Do not recommend this restaurant. read more

Can I give this restaurant zero stars !! Very rude and inflexible staff. We walked in the restaurant and were asked to wait outside the door. The waiter, then, proceeded to close the door on us. After a few min, another staff member opens the door and asks us which one set table we wanted - veg or non-veg..no welcome, no making sure we were seated before asking us what we wanted. It was as if he was doing us a favor by letting us into the restaurant. When we told him we wanted non-veg, he tells us that he "recommends" we order for 3 people because my daughter is older. We were not sure and thought we would get to order when we sat down at the table, so could decide later. After taking our drinks order, I tell him that we want to order for 2. Reason being that our hotel had no refrigerator and we didn't want any leftovers (which we explicitly mentioned). The waiter tells that they cannot change the order, which to me is ridiculous..it's been less than a min since we sat down, this is a set menu, so all the dishes have been prepared beforehand. This pissed us off because he was adamant that he couldn't change. So, we decided to pay for the beer and left ! It seems ridiculous to me that he would rather lose more than €50 in business than make a customer happy. What happened to customer service ! Also, they don't serve tap water..only bottled. At least that's what we were told !! We have travelled to multiple countries all over the world and have never seen such callous customer service anywhere ! read more

FANTASTIC ALL AROUND. Food exceeded my expectations and the service was so sweet and helpful I wanted to cry for being treated so well by the hardworking gentleman serving the whole restaurant. Ok I'm a little too sentimental. But really appreciate this man who worked the entire front of house diligently, gracefully, expeditiously, and hospitably. Never have we felt so appreciated as diners. Truly phenomenal dining experience. We were lucky to find this restaurant on yelp on a whim and even luckier they were open and not too busy (but quickly became very busy after we arrived!). Food came out quickly and everything tasted delicious!!!! The stews were all so unique and the meat melts in your mouth. The flavor profile of each dish was perfectly balanced as was the texture for each dish. I never had Indonesian before so this was a great first try. Decor was also beautiful in this restaurant. We came spot on 5 pm and got seated; first diners of the evening. Best not arrive before 5. The service was very good. Each dish was explained. We had the ramayana. Our kids don't much like spicy foods but at least five of the ten dishes were delicately flavoured, leaving plenty for us adults to enjoy. One of the worst customer service I have ever seen. When we first arrived, the host told us that it's going to take an hour to an hour and half. Ambiance, food (rifstaffel!), price, service - all outstanding!! Kartika does not take reservations. I stopped by the restaurant earlier in the day to attempt to make reservations. The restaurant is small and cozy - about 8 four-tops and 2 two-tops in one room. I spoke to one of the servers about making a reservation: he explained that Kartika does not take reservations. I noticed each of the tables had a "Reserve" placeholder on it and I asked why. The server explained that they include placeholders to deter guests from walking into the restaurant and seating themselves. He suggested the earlier we came in, the better chance we would have of being immediately seated. Four of us arrived at 7 pm. There remained two 4 tops open. The man I had met before and a woman were tending to the entire restaurant. The man greeted us and two people also in line. He explained that there was no a la carte menu. Our only option was rifstaffel, vegetarian or meat. Both us and the two people in line agreed we wanted rifstaffel and we were both immediately seated. Our table chose half vegetarian and half meat. We were seated at a four-top by the window. We immediately were brought two types of chips (shrimp and non shrimp) and three dipping sauces. The peanut butter sauce was delicious! Kartika offers wine and beer, including Indonesian beer. All four of us ordered Indonesian beers. Very shortly after we were brought our drinks, our food arrived. In total, there were about 16+ dishes, 8 or 9 veggie and 8 or 9 meat based, and a straw basket full of rice. The server described with passion each dish as he arranged them on the table and deliberately placed all the vegetarian ones next to me (the vegetarian). The meat dishes included chicken, spicy chicken, beef, spicy beef dishes, and chicken sate. The veggie dishes included traditional salad, tofu, vegetables in coconut based sauce, eggs, a tempeh sate and fried bananas. We were brought additional "sauces" including homemade coconut flakes and marinated soy beans. Everything was delicious, authentic, full of great flavor and with a perfect kick of spicy. We ate everything. We ordered another round of beers. We never had to try and flag down our server. He stopped by to check in if we needed anything and to make sure we were enjoying the food. We were! Our only critique was that the portions could have been larger. Each "dish" was in a small individual soup sized bowl. We finished all the food and then continued to finish our drinks. Our server brought over two complimentary desserts - coconut ice cream with a mini stroopwaffel, green tea Asian sponge cake and then he brought us another round of beers on the house. He also gifted us with a bag of stroopwaffels! We stayed for around 2 hours. We had a terrific time. For all the food and drink, our bill was 30 EURO each. We definitely will be going back and bringing more out of town guests with us for the best rifstaffel experience in town. read more

We've lived in Amsterdam for a few years now, and have had a chance to try a bunch of Indonesian places (usually going with visiting friends, and usually getting a rijsttafel). Most of them have been pretty mediocre, especially in the more tourist-heavy parts of town. After taking several rounds of visitors to Kantijl en de Tijger, we ordered take-out from Kartika. Even out of a plastic container it impressed us, so we took our next visitors their instead, and it's been our go-to ever since. We've found Kantijl's food is usually pretty tasty, but it's a bit like eating in Grand Central Station. Kartika is not only more consistent, but MUCH quieter and more relaxed. It's fairly small and the service is very attentive- some of the best service to be found in Amsterdam, I think. And the food is delicious, lovingly prepared and explained to you as it arrives. Kartika and Tempo Doeloe are our two favorites, but Kartika is a lot less rigid in its reservation policy, and has a cosier atmosphere. It's also just a few blocks from Leidseplein and a reasonable walk from Museumplein, so well within reach if you're here sightseeing. We'll be taking our visitors there for the forseeable future. read more

This was my favorite dining experience in Amsterdam. We had the vegetarian set menu, and it was incredible!! You get to sample several different dishes.
