As a preface, I know there are inherent risks for complications whenever there is a medical procedure, and I don't believe our experience had to do with any negligence on Katalina and her team. I am writing this review in hopes that no parent will have to go through what we went through. With that being said, If I could give Katalina zero stars I would. It wouldn't be for her dentistry abilities but for the way she treats her patients. Katalina was referred to us by our regular dentist for tooth extractions because she is a "pediatric dentist". The extraction itself seemed to go smoothly, from what my wife told me, besides the fact Katalina was short with our son... which mirrors most of the negative reviews regarding her temperament with child patients. The next day my son started to complain that both his upper and lower jaw was hurting on the side of the extraction. The extraction was two molars on his upper right jaw. We gave him the usual Advil/Tylenol combo, but his pain was worse than expected. I thought he was exaggerating, but when he started to roll around the floor in pain and had a slight fever, I figured something must be wrong. I call with my concerns, and Katalina says to continue with Advil/Tylenol and the lower jaw pain has nothing to do with the extraction and is just coincidence. The next day, my wife stays home with our son, it seems like the pain has subsided a little, but I notice swelling in his lower jaw from a picture my wife sent me. When I get home around 4 PM, I notice his lower jaw is extremely swollen, he still has a fever, he can barely move his neck/head, and he is in extreme pain. Again, I call with my concerns and they asked for pictures. I send them pictures of the extraction site and his swollen jaw. I get a call back saying this is normal and to continue with Advil/Tylenol. At this time, I press them about his swollen jaw. They said they would call me back, which leads me to believe Katalina didn't bother to look at the pictures. When they call back, I was told if I could get to the office before they close at 5PM they could see my son. We get to the office around 4:45PM, and I finally get to meet Jennifer who runs the front office. Jennifer is probably the only bright spot for the practice as she facilitated all our communication with Katalina and was super friendly. Upon examining Katalina determined the extraction site was fine and the swollen lymph node was a coincidence and had nothing to do with the extraction. She also told us to go to the emergency room to address the swollen/infected lymph node and there was nothing she could do for us. Basically, she wiped her hands clean of the infection and didn't want to accept any responsibility for it. We leave the office to pursue further treatment, and I ask my wife to call back to get what anesthetic they used in case we needed it for the ER. She called and emailed and never got a response. It was a good thing we didn't need that information. The rest of the night goes like this: - We go to Sutter urgent care and urgent care doctor said the infection had to do with the extraction and scheduled us to go to the ER. - We go to Stanford Pediatric ER (these guys are amazing, the whole staff) - The ER doctor's assessment was the infection has to do with the extraction - The on-call ER dentist's assessment was the infection has to do with the extraction. He explained that because all the soft tissue in the jaw is connected bacteria can easily traverse down to the lower jaw from the upper jaw. It takes another two more weeks of antibiotics before the infection finally subsided. During those two weeks my son had limited movement from his neck and head and was in severe pain and had to miss about a week of school. I don't have an issue with Katalina's dentistry abilities, but I do have a huge issue with the way she treats her patients and her inability to accept responsibility when something goes wrong. If Katalina had taken the pain and swelling my son was feeling seriously, maybe we could have treated the infection earlier and avoided more pain and suffering he had to endure. Also, if I didn't press to have him seen and they had closed for the next 3 days the infection could have escalated to something much worse. We never heard back regarding the anesthetic that was used even though she knew we were going to the ER. Also, to claim the infection had nothing to do with the extraction and was pure coincidence is extremely irresponsible. Especially when three other medical professionals, including another dentist, knew right away that the infection had to do with the extraction. If my son didn't go in for an extraction there would have been no infection. Obviously, we will never be doing any business with Katalina ever again. If you are reading this as a parent, remember to always advocate for your children. If something feels off, make sure it gets addressed. You know your children best. read more

I agree with the person who described the lack of compassion towards children from Dr Ramirez, bordering extreme in my opinion. My daughter had a loose tooth for a bit longer than Dr Ramirez thought was acceptable. This dentist proceeded to try to pull the tooth out herself without any pain relievers or any way to mitigate the pain. The tooth was simply not ready to come out as evidenced by the fact my daughter left with the tooth STILL in place, tears in her eyes and a new fear of dentists she NEVER had. The "pull" they use to attract kids (the tv and games and such) was not enough to have my very playful 8 year old want to come back. I already knew after this we were going to change dentists. That was accelerated when my son's teeth broke on accident, the nerve was showing on two teeth. This is considered a dental emergency. The pediatric ED wanted to sent my son to his dentist emergently to get it fixed and would not let us leave without an appointment for that day. Lo and behold, Dr Ramirez was in vacation and DID NOT have a back-up dentist to cover her patients in case of emergencies. She left us stranded, which led us to stay an extra 3 hours as the ED doctors and I worked on finding a dentist who could see my son that day. This was a blessing in disguise, however as we found Dr Oahn Le in San Mateo. What a treasure of a find she was! Not only is she the BEST dentist this almost 50 year old woman has met, she teaches dentistry at UCSF and I believe she is also a member of the Board of Dentistry. Dr Le LOVES dentistry, loves teaching, loves her patients. After working on my son's teeth (remember, he was not a patient of hers already), she called me back that same evening to see how he was doing. Dr Le was shocked and disappointed to hear about Dr Ramirez's lack of back up coverage and the way she approached my 8 year old's tooth. I am glad to say that through our ED experience we found an amazing dentist who truly cares and is so good at what she does. My daughter STILL has lingering fears of dentists (she is 10 now), but she easily goes to Dr Le knowing she is safe. There is absolutely NO need for "tough love" when it comes to dentistry and kids. Since this dentists thinks that's a thing, maybe she should consider working with adults instead. I don't see her cold and icy personality doing well with that population either tho. read more

We chose Dr. Ramirez based on all the reviews here and how her website advertises specializing in children, providing a calm environment, and so on. Yes, they have a TV screen up on the ceiling with a kids show playing, but we have seen zero compassion or patience. This most recent check-up left us speechless. She was yelling in our 7 year old son's ear "stop crying" over and over then told him "open your mouth or I will do it for you." He, of course, continued to cry and she then threw up her hands and said I'm not doing this and walked out of the room! Maybe she was just having a bad day or is totally burnt out in her profession, but it was very unprofessional and inappropriate and it would weigh on me if I didn't share this out with other parents who are looking for an appropriate and caring pediatric dentist. read more

I'm so glad my dentist indicated Doctor Ramirez to take care of my kids. The visits to the dentist was a problem, but not anymore. Now my kids wants to come happily every time. Dr. Ramirez is great! Her assistant and Jennifer are also really really wonderful. I initially brought my 4.5 year old to Dr. Ramirez for a second opinion, I'm so happy I did. The previous office immediately told me they needed to use general anesthesia to help my daughter, Dr. Ramirez was able to complete our treatment plan with only nitrous. She's very patient, kind, and makes an effort to connect with the kids. My almost 2 year old happily got her teeth cleaned today, something I didn't think would be possible. Dr. Ramirez is a fantastic pediatric dentist! My two children (ages 4 and 5) actually look forward to going to their checkups with Dr. Ramirez! She has been their dentist for almost two years. The waiting room has a large television which is usually playing a Disney DVD. This captivates my kids and they would love to stay there and watch the entire movie. The office always seems calm. Once they're seated in the treatment room, they are offered headphones and can watch a tv mounted on the ceiling. Parents sit by their chair and are able to discuss the visit with Dr. Ramirez . Big Mistake!!! I made the mistake of scheduling an appointment for my daughter even though the woman answering the phone was very rude and snappy. I brought my daughter to the appointment and waited in the reception area for a while then to top it off I had to put up listening to the personal conversation of the front desk person with someone on the phone... that honestly was not appropriate for anyone to hear. At no time did she apologize or even acknowledge the people in the reception area. Finally it was our time to see Dr. Ramirez, she was nice and professional, and my daughter seemed at ease with her and the assistant. But then dealing with the receptionist was a disappointment. Very ignorant about insurance and lacking professionalism, Dr. Ramirez is nice but needs to find a better person for the front area....this woman needs to be working at a low class bar but not with children! read more

My expectations with this dentist did not pan out! The first appointment went alright although I sensed that she didn't have the "bedside manners" required to deal with kids. She didn't seem to put forth the effort to make the child feel at ease. The dental area is very nice though, with a TV above the chair to watch a movie, while the dental work is being performed. I sensed that the work was being rushed, with not enough time being spent on the new patient. The second appointment was a disaster. First of, we waited about 30 minutes past the appointment time. The receptionist seem to think that this was not a big deal, although we were quite close to the closing time. Then, once we went in, not a word or apology by the dentist about us waiting so long. Instead, we were rushed through a teeth checkup in about 2-3 minutes. Then, with barely any feedback from her, we were sent packing. The bay area has thousands of dentists; there is absolutely no need to stick with any dentist, if you feel that you can get better service elsewhere. My son had bad experiences at a previous dentist so we tried Dr. Ramirez based on her volunteering to teach good oral hygeine in the kids schools. She took time to help my son relax, not to mention she has TV and headphones for the kids to keep them distracted. By the time she was finished with the checkup, my son doesnt want to leave. We also had some extensive work done by an associate of hers as my son had some mega cavities. He was great, too. We were referred here by our primary dentist, so I didn't do the regular research - my first mistake. While I have no issue with the work done by Dr. Ramirez, she is clearly in business for the money and nothing else. She insisted on expensive, unnecessary, add-ons to hike up our bill, uses scare tactics, and the entire staff is completely uncaring about working parents' schedules/time away from the office, and messes up the billing. Dr. Ramirez has always been great with my two boys. My oldest had two major tooth injuries, however Dr. Ramirez was always so paitient and detailed with my kids treatments. Always returned the emergency calls and was very concerned with the outcome of my kids. This week was a true testament that she is superb with kids. My son had to get a huge cavity (almost a root canal) and her loving touch made my son so much more relaxed. She was inviting to us the parents to sit with our kid while she worked, which was important to us. I highly reccomend her and her new front desk staff. Dr. Ramirez is wonderful, competent, and she is kind and gentle with the kids. ....BUT her receptionist-scheduler is incompetent and is extremely frustrating to work with. The best way to describe the experience is to imagine that you're talking to an off-shore call center, except that the person has attitude, is tone deaf, and has short term memory loss. So sad -- we were driving from San Francisco just to stay with the practice. I usually pull out my hair just trying to make the appointments, so now the drive's just not worth it. read more

Dr. Ramirez is an excellent, honest, gentle pediatric dentist who has a calm, kind bedside manner. She treated my sons since age 3 and they are now in high school. The office is clean, modern, up to date and friendly. We never had to wait for an appointment, and her billing was always accurate. Dr. Ramirez always did a good job of explaining the big picture as well as the small details of what needed to be done. In the treatment room, there are videos with head phones, so the little ones can watch movies during cleanings which is very helpful. We were back in the office today, and we're very happy. My son has a very severe gag reflex. They work so gently with him, and help him get through the process with lots of encouragement. Even the bite-wing x-rays went smoothly this time because they've been working with him over time, showing lots of patience. My only negative is that they don't do adult teeth! My older children had some bad experiences at another place, so it's a relief to have a gentle person working with them. My kids, now 2.5 and 4, having been seeing Dr. Ramirez for close to two years. We've always had great experiences. My son has been a happy and willing patient right from the start. My daughter was nervous for her first two visits, so Dr. Ramirez kept her visits short and sweet and suggested she sit on my lap. Those efforts paid off because at our most recent visit, she hopped right up and was comfortable and cooperative during the whole exam and cleaning. I appreciate that her lobby is clean and stocked with toys and games to help ease pre-visit anxiety. From our experience, they don't over book, so we've never had to wait long or sat in a lobby packed with other patients. Little touches, like playing recent movies on the ceiling above the exam chairs and having a treasure box for the young kids make a huge difference for my kids. Dr. Ramirez is very knowledgable about kid specific dental topics like breastfeeding, kids multivitamins, food choices- and she addresses them from a non judgmental standpoint. Last but not least, the gal at the front desk is very friendly, knowledgable about billing, and helpful. We currently have two active insurance plans, and she went out of her way to figure out the best way to get coverage for our visit. read more

When my daughter, 1 year old at the time, and I first went to go see her I felt the same way, but I took it upon myself to make my daughter feel at ease. Now my daughter is 6 and likes going to see Dr. Ramirez. My daughter respects her and does what she is told, in that way Dr. Ramirez is free to work on my daughter's mouth freely to ensure that she stays healthy. Dr. Ramirez is fabulous!!!! We came to her five years ago for a second opinion and I am glad we did. My daughter had a bad experience with her previous dentist and was very afraid. Dr. Ramirez was extremely patient and very sweet. She was able to complete all the work without any problems and my children love her. Her office is really nice, easy parking, clean, TVs on the ceiling for children to watch while the work is being done. She allows parents in the treatment rooms and explains things clearly. She is great with children and my two daughters absolutely love her. I agree that her previous receptionist was not very nice. However, the new receptionist is excellent, nice and very efficient. Dr Ramirez has been fantastic with my two kids. Both my 6-year old daughter and 3 year-old son are always happy to go to their dentist appointment. I don't remember having that attitude when I was a kid!!! I think it is because Dr Ramirez's is not only very skilled and experienced treating children but also a doctor that genuinely cares about her patients. Her office is completely designed to make her little patients feel as comfortable, relaxed and entertained as possible so they can associate a visit to the dentist with a positive experience and not a scary one. Dr. Ramirez taught me in a very detailed way how to take care of my kids' teeth since they were toddlers. This was specially important to me with my first child because I was very inexperienced...I was able to ask her as many questions as I needed!!! Great difference vs. other doctors that get upset if you dare to ask them anything!!! I really appreciate Dr Ramirez's honesty explaining the potential risks if I don't do the recommended hygiene procedures or follow the appropriate treatment. I have a lot of gratitude with her for having been clear about the necessary treatment my daughter needed which prevented a lot of headaches later on. If I could give this dentist a zero star, I would. My daughter got a cavity which Dr Ramirez filled. This led to an infection, a root canal by Dr Ramirez, which did not clear out the remaining infection. When I went for a consult with another dentist, full records were not sent when requested. Her attitude was "wait and see" after the root canal - in contradiction to two other dentists that urged me to act immediately. This experience has traumatized my daughter, and she risks losing the tooth. The front office staff's attitude could also be improved. After running late by 10 minutes and calling to inform them that I was late, I was told that my appointment was cancelled and that I needed to show up on time next time to be seen. read more
