Took my daughter for a haircut with Kate. Called before going based on the reviews didn't know how busy it wouldn't be. Plenty of parking she's located on the second floor. I paid $40 for my daughter to get a basic haircut we just trimmed her a good amount of her ends. Nothing crazy just straight. Kate didn't wash or dry or style her hair just a cut. I did think this was a bit pricey just to cut her hair. However we were there already and my daughter wanted a hair cut. She didn't leave it straight and was so sweet. This the first time I've ever been to this location. They are location right across from Sizzler on Vermont Ave., and they are on the 2nd level above Think Nail Salon. I've found them through Yelp. Based on the mixed reviews, I decided to take my chance, and made a same day appointment at 5:30pm to get my hair curled before going to Spring and 71 Above. After the first visit, let's just say, this is by far one of the most aggressive hair washing and hair curling sessions that I have ever endured. Parking: Free and spacious, but they do start valet parking by 5:30pm (I got to the lot by 5:15pm). When I got there, the salon was empty, and so Kate and her assistant was waiting for me. Kate is owner with blonde hair. She's a nice and friendly lady. Her assistant (didn't catch her name) is the lady with the straight brown hair with subtle blonde highlights, and is taller than Kate. Her assistant was friendly and welcoming at first. She had me store my purse in their storage compartment, and then showed me to their dressing room so that I can get a robe to wear. Afterwards, her assistant got down to washing my hair. Holy smokes, this woman shook my head a lot while twisting and tugging my hair in between rinses! Her shampooing skills weren't tender. The purpose of going to a salon is to feel relaxed, massaged and pampered, but damn, I was on edge with this one. At first, their shampoo station chair was hella short, and the assistant didn't even pull up the leg rest for me, and so I was feeling cramped, and sliding down while getting washed. The assistant also put a towel over my eyes, and it didn't stay put since she kept shaking my head while shampooing. I ended up holding onto the towel until she finished. The only good thing I liked about her washing my hair was the little head scratches in between - that I liked. Once I got into my chair, Kate came over and started blow drying half of my hair while her assistant worked on the other side. Kate was friendly and got to small talking with me for a bit. She didn't speak a whole lot of English, but enough to understand that I wanted my curls tight, hair parted on my right side, teased/volume on top and back of my head. She also did asked me my nationality, and showed me an ornament she got from Singapore. Once they finished blow drying, here comes the pain. For the tight curls, Kate used a 1/2 inch or ¾ inch curling iron and hair sprayed in between. Her assistant was flat ironing the back of my hair to get it straight, and again with the aggressive tugging. While curling my hair, Kate kept tugging at the root of my hair with each curl, and omg, I was freaking out inside! I already had fine hair, and was worried that she either might burn my hair or worst, pull it out. The assistant was watching my face every time, and she wasn't happy that I was wincing (well duh!), and brought me some magazines to distract me, but damn, I couldn't read it because the tugging was too obvious! I wanted to trust Kate, but internally, I was thinking, this was hella painful. I did appreciate that in between curling, she checked in with me to see how I'm liking the styling so far. Once Kate finished curling (whew!), her assistant was working on teasing the top and back of my hair. She did a good job, but I didn't appreciate the little snide, giggling comments she made to Kate about my hair or scalp (yes, I have some acne, but who doesn't?). Even if you're speaking another language, but yea, universal tone is obvious. In the end, Kate did one last inspection of my hair to ensure I was happy with my style. I was happy with my style, and yes, my hair stayed intact throughout Spring and 71 Above. I was very pleased. Overall charge for hair curling and style $35. This review I'm writing has mixed feelings. I loved the outcome of my hair, but I don't know if I want to come back to endure the tugging and aggressive shampoo washing again. read more

Solid 3.5 stars. Cash preferred but they do accept card. Walk ins are accepted. I made an appointment for a Friday at 5:30 because I thought they would be busy, but they were surprisingly quiet. I walked in and was greeted by Kate and Sue. They had me put on a robe, and then Sue washed my hair, and Kate cut it. I got side bangs and a simple trim -- just about a quarter inch off, since I'm trying to grow my hair out. Kate gave me exactly what I wanted and she and Sue even styled my hair for me after. They curled it very nicely. They were both friendly but not very talkative. Wash/dry/style for my medium length hair (right below shoulders) came out to $35 before tip. (Kate let me know that long hair is $40 and up.) Very reasonable prices! Clean salon, good service, good prices, will return. read more

Came here again to get another trim to even out how my pixie is growing out and was happy with the service! She washed my hair and cut it bluntly according the picture I showed her....but the one thing that made me squirm was when she touched my bangs. She trimmed them a little too short and I instantly felt a little sad, but with a handy pair of scissors when I got home I made it work. Also I made an appointment for 5:30 and didn't get seen til 6, but I understood because sometimes people want a haircut their way and that's how it should be so I wasn't bothered by it. So I've tried many hair places in ktown and I have to say this place is by far the best value you can get. $15 for a men's cut ($35 for women) is a freaking steal by any measure. But what's great is that it's the same quality as other places that charge you $40+ for the same haircut. Plus plenty of parking (which knowing ktown is next to impossible) and easy to get an appointment! I usually get my haircut by Kate, but tried out Helen and she was on point as well. Omg the worst hair cut I have ever had! they totally messed up my hair. I wanna cry right now. Please never go here! I'm still very upset at the butchering job the lady in blonde did. It makes me depressed to see my hair in the mirror. I don't know how she has a business in hair styling when she knows nothing about cutting hair. I gave her a picture of what I wanted which was a 3 layered hair cut. She cut my first layer so short that it made it look like a mullet and the other 2 layers were so long that it looked like a rats tail. I'm not kidding people. This story is true. I cried a lot on the way home and I'm still crying. She thinned out my hair so much that I didn't have any hair left. I didn't pay her of course but it doesn't make me feel better about the fact that I have to wait months and months for my hair to grow back to normal. To summarize, this place is a gem of a find for men who care about their hair, the way it's styled and want good value. Kate and Sue are extraordinarily nice and hospitable, and I always look forward to seeing them. I had a meeting in Koreatown and needed to get a haircut nearby before catching a flight. Finding a good stylist is not easy but I decided to take a chance based on the yelp reviews and I was not led astray. I am pretty particular about the way I cut my hair. I generally get a pompadour fade and always try to explain that to any new stylist I visit. Without really saying much however, Kate was able to read my hair and replicate the style in a way I really liked and have subsequently been complimented on. I also got my hair colored there which I was nervous about given how short I cut the sides due to the potential staining, but they do a meticulous job making sure you leave like you never went in for a color at all. Finally, I'm not sure this is something they do with all men that visit, but they always compliment me on how handsome and nice I am which honestly doesn't hurt and only enhances the Kate Hair line experience. Kate the owner gave me a terrible haircut. Prior to the haircut, I specifically told her about a sensitive area on my head that needs to be cut carefully to prevent it from protruding out as the area does not grow hair from an accident and remarked that she understood. Fast forward to the end of the cut and the result couldn't have been more disastrous. I repeatedly explained to her through out the cut that my hair was pressed down and didn't represent its natural look, but insisted she was an expert and knew what she was doing. By the end of it (post wash) my hair looked like a patch of grass that wasn't cut evenly - not only was the area I warned her about protruding, but my front was so uneven that I have a long layer of hair facing down. To make matters worse, she kept pushing the side of my head away from the mirror, so that I wouldn't get a good look and tried to disguise it by blowing hot air down on it. I remained civil in spite of how dissatisfied I was, but will definitely not be coming back for round 2. Calling her cuts mediocre is my way of being nice. read more

I went here for a cut based on the great reviews on yelp. I specifically told the lady the exact length I wanted (about a 4" trim) and that I needed to keep the length for a special event that's coming up. I felt a little nervous when she seemed to be struggling a bit but I was like, hey how much can she mess up? I have really long hair (past my chest). Wrong. She chopped off my hair and the shortest part of my hair is now hitting the back of my neck. I told her how long I wanted, that I didn't want a ton of layers... but she ultimately ignored all that. i don't know where we went wrong. I was unhappy with my cut and told her that she cut my hair too short. The owner scurried to my side and commented how beautiful it was. Yeah, sure. But what can I do? I can't put the toothpaste back in the tube, what's cut is cut. I paid ($35, not bad but is it?), gave her a tip, and left. Don't get me wrong - the ladies seemed nice and maybe they were having an off day. But would I go back? No. Would I recommend this place to my friends? Heck No. Well not unless i hate them or they say things like, hey your hair looks like a rat gnawed it off (my mom actually said this to me *sob*). I guess my hair will grow back and life will go on. Lesson learned? Yes, don't fall for terrific reviews on yelp if that's the only thing they've written. Another lesson learned? Yes, castor oil will help hair grow faster (fingers crossed). read more

Was in for a cut/trim for the first time in July. Lisa cut my hair and did an excellent job. Kate assisted with the blowdry and the style, and I was pleased with the quality and service, especially for the $30 pricetag. Initial experience was 4.5 stars. However, I was in last night and Kate cut my hair solo, as Lisa was not in. Perhaps it was a 'lost in translation' issue, but throughout my haircut, I felt very bad because of what Kate was saying about the state of my hair, which is fine in texture and going through a rehab phase as I experienced some major breakage/loss due to weight loss (which is common). I explained the reason as soon as I sat her chair, but Kate did not understand and continued to comment on it, which was offputting and put a big damper on things. She is a very sweet person but our (mis)communication was upsetting. I was to receive a straightforward a-line bob, but I noticed that she did not cross-check the cut at the end to make sure that it was even. Sure enough, today after washing, I noticed that I have the most uneven hair cut I've ever received, with several stray pieces an inch or more longer than the rest and an overall jagged and unsmooth line all around. I recommend Lisa over Kate. I'm disappointed because I thought I had found my go-to salon after my cut in July. However, October's uneven cut (along with Kate's remarks) has put me off so much that I don't believe that I will return. read more

Based on that one comment I decided to check it out. My first cut was better than I expected it to be and this place instantly became my go to place. It was my first time here, was looking thru yelp for a new hair salon and something that's open on Sundays. They're open 7 days a week. Guess I found my new hair salon on Sundays. My hair stylist was Lisa. She speaks both English and Korean. Lisa was very professional top notch. I would say. She studied my figure and to see which style would fit me best. She uses mainly scissors rather the clippers. Which I personally like. Most korean places uses clippers to make it quick. Lisa is easy to talk to, friendly and very accommodating.. She's cute too haha. :), If you want Lisa come on a Sunday and make sure you make an appointment. Prices are cheap aswell $10-$15 for men's hair and women for $25. The business is very clean. My cut price was $15 but since Lisa did an amazing cut, I tipped her $15. :) read more

My 8 year old daughter came in for a haircut today because her hair was almost to her waist and she was finally ready for a cut. We showed Kate how much we wanted to cut which we all agreed was around 3 inches. She starts to cut and when I glance up a few minutes later my daughter's hair is seriously an inch or two below her shoulders. It was quite a shock. Kate tried to say she only cut 3 inches off. What?! Anyways it was not what my daughter was expecting at all and thankfully she didn't burst into tears. She told me it is $35 for a haircut and wash and $30 for just a haircut for short hair. Fast forward I went to the salon, she cut my hair and it was uneven so I asked her to trim it more. She started getting blatantly irritated and rushing my haircut. Overall it was a bad experience. Then when I go to pay, she tells me that its $35 instead of $30 when she said its $30 on the phone because she thought I was asking about a "guys" haircut... cmon really? I clearly am a girl and sound like a girl. I give her $35 anyway because I always tip but I find it wrong and sneaky to pull a fast one to charge people extra. Then it gets worse. Few days later, I found out she added her own tip to my card. And her explanation is hilarious. Supposedly she "accidentally" gave my receipt to another customer and who then added $7 tip. So she thinks I will believe that the customer's receipt printed out right in front of her, but she somehow gave them my receipt in the pile of signed receipts. The reason I know that this was a lie is because how is a customer going to just add tip on MY receipt when it already had MY signature on it.. Flat out lie. Kate is a very shady person. She must think I'm extremely dumb to believe her lies. Also, It didn't make sense that the 2 reciepts had the same card numbers and when I asked her, she snatched it from me and started yelling at me. Just made her look even more suspicious and guilty. If you have done business with her, I advise you to double check the charge because I would not be surprised if she has done this more than once thinking people won't notice. She was upset I didn't give her a "tip" when I technically did because I gave her $35 for a $30 haircut so she decided to add her own tip. Whether it is $5, $7, $10, $20 I don't care its about the principle and I will never go back to her salon because of how dishonest and shady she is. After living in my new apartment in Koreatown for a few months, I decided it was time to get my hair cut. Mostly due to the fact that my mother was coming into to, so I wanted to look fresh. That's besides the point. So the first time I stepped foot inside here, there was a nice Asian man who helped with my need. He was quiet, but that's because he was very concentrated on my hair. It was intense. He noticed every detail and flaw as he was cutting my hair that I didn't need to ask him to even out anything. Whenever I saw something wrong, he saw it too. Almost like he was reading my mind. Since then, I've come to Kate's to get my hair done. I haven't seen the nice Asian man since then, but I've been getting my hair done by Kate, herself, ever since. The great thing about Kate is that she listens; she asks what you want done to your hair and checks with you during the cut to make sure it's what you wanted. She's not like some hairdressers who think they know hair better than everyone and goes off doing their own thing on you. Then you end up paying the big bucks for something completely different from what you asked for. Now pricing, she pretty much has everything set to a fair price. $15 for men and $25 for women. For the quality I receive for my haircut, I'm fine for what I pay. Overall, the ambiance is very chill and the decor is lovely.
