Holistic care - a doctor who asks about all aspects of my health and takes the time to process the information as a whole so that I can improve my overall health. 2. Sensitivity - a doctor who asks about my health & wellness philosophy and attempts to work with me to honor my wishes, someone who does not make assumptions, and does not make biased remarks regarding health or lifestyle. After meeting with Dr. Ali, I can only recommend her on the basis of her friendliness (and that of all other office staff.) Friendliness aside, she doesn't seem to have the crucial qualities that I'm looking for in a doctor. There are quite a number of reasons I wouldn't return to Dr. Ali, but to name a few: Though I explained that this was my first visit to a doctor in a long time and I mostly wanted to talk about my health, Dr. Ali seemed unprepared to have an in-depth conversation. Instead of initiating a conversation about various elements of my health, she immediately asked me about my list of health questions/complaints and rushed me through them. Several of my questions related to diet, blood sugar, weight gain/loss and I felt that they warranted a longer conversation and recommendations beyond various blood testing. Dr. Ali failed my queer-friendly sensitivity test, asking me about oral contraception during a conversation about acne, and immediately launched into statistics about condom failure before I could edge in, "Um, I'm a lesbian." (And we were talking about my SKIN.) Dr. Ali replied "Well, that would have been my next question." All doctors, but especially doctors in the Bay area, should have a conversation with their patients about who they sleep with (and various risky practices they might engage in) before talking about birth control and STD prevention. Because sometimes it's not relevant to talk about contraception to someone who isn't sleeping with men, or is perhaps looking to get pregnant. Which brings me to the last hurrah: Later, when talking about potential ovary issues I might be at risk for, Dr. Ali remarked, "Well, I guess it won't matter since you won't be trying for children." !! Perhaps Dr. Ali is aware of a new law that prohibits gay women from conceiving children? Why would anyone assume that I won't be making use of my ovaries just because I happen to shack up with a lady? Just plain ignorance. So, I'm still on a search for a whole-body-minded practitioner who is hip to the ways of baby-less but maybe someday baby-wanting lesbians. We had a brief incomplete chat about a couple of my relatives and their diagnoses, ending before the end of my info - and she changed MY diagnosis based on this brief incomplete chat about my relatives - AND she didn't tell me what more severe diagnosis she had changed me to, based on this feeble evidence - AND she resisted changing my diagnosis back to what it had been for 2 decades! At the time, I wasn't having a good experience with my previous doctor's office, so my husband suggested that I ask to see Dr. Ling. I'm very grateful that Dr. Ling was willing to accept me as a patient. From my experience, Dr. Ling truly cares about the individual health of each of her patients. She doesn't just treat a test result or prescribe medication and send you on your way. She takes the time to understand the issue, orders the appropriate tests, reviews the results, and develops a plan to address the problem. One example is my blood pressure. It had been difficult to control, and several doctors had tried different medications. Some of the medications caused unpleasant side effects. Dr. Ling patiently worked with me, trying different medications and combinations until we found an approach that works. Today, my blood pressure is under control and, importantly, I'm not experiencing the side effects I had before. Another example is my bone health. I needed treatment that involved injections, but I really don't like shots and was also concerned about the cost. Instead of simply telling me that injections were my only option, Dr. Ling was willing to discuss a pill alternative and let me try it. If it works for me, it could save me both the inconvenience of injections and a significant amount of money. I really appreciate that she considers both my health and my concerns. Recently, I also needed a special lab test because of a hereditary health issue in my family that could potentially affect me. I brought the request to the office, and they were able to schedule me for an appointment the very next day. When I arrived, I waited less than 10 minutes, and Dr. Ling reviewed the request and signed the lab order right away. The office staff are also very thoughtful--they routinely ask whether I need any medication refills when I'm there. The office staff are friendly, helpful, and responsive as well. One time, my husband and I discovered that our online pharmacy had significantly increased the price of one of our medications. We asked the office to change the pharmacy, and they took care of it right away so I could get my refill the same day. They even allowed me to keep one particular medication at a different pharmacy because it was much less expensive there. Overall, my husband and I have had a wonderful experience with Dr. Ling and her staff. What stands out most is that we feel like real patients, not just numbers. Even though the office is busy, we never feel like Dr. Ling is simply trying to rush us out the door. She listens to our concerns and genuinely wants to find solutions that work for us. With all the stories we hear these days about how difficult it can be to find a good primary care doctor, we feel very fortunate to have Dr. Ling as our PCP.
