I have been seeing Dr. Chui for many years for several types of skin cancer, including melanoma. I have always had a positive experience; she is very thorough in her examinations. Obviously, there is a protocol for skin checks and they are followed. I do note that, since the connection with Golden State, the visits seem to shorter with less time for exploring issues. Reading the rest of the reviews, i have to concur . Dr. Chui is the ice princess of this practice. I brought my Dad into the clinic for severe itching and she could have cared less. Even my Dad who used to be a surgeon was taken aback by her brusque demeanor. Bedside manners aren't usually the strong suit for derm docs, per my derm doc friend. So I guess I should have set my expectations. She tends to be quite distant, cold and aloof. On the contrary, Carmen (my facialist) and Cybele (laser treatment) are super warm and friendly. I wrote a separate review on "Allura" but didn't realize Dr. Fembot (Chui) had a separate yelp listing. I feel so strongly about my horrible experience last fall (2012) that I am actually ranting about Fembot in two different places! I am going to quote, and completely agree with, another Yelp reviewer: "She shows no sympathy, care, or concern to her patients. She is rude and unpleasant, unwilling and does not want to help. " Honestly, I think the above sentence is understated. She is HORRIBLE. I have never been treated so poorly by a health care professional in my life. I don't know what I, or my then 3-year old son (the patient) could have possibly done to deserve her serial-killer attitude. Dr. Chui is COLD as ice, she is MEAN, and she seems completely APATHETIC to the point that I don't even think she was paying attention to me or my son. I could excuse all that if she was some kind of Dr. House-like brilliant doctor, but she ain't. Let me add that I am an extremely polite and friendly person. I came here back 2005.. for my dermatologist appoint. Today, I am here again. Since my insurance is slowly reaching out to better, and much more efficient doctors out in the San Mateo County. I would much rather drive here, where there is parking... YES! Meter parking was 30 minutes for each quarter not 8 like SF! AND get this, doctors were MUCH MUCH, MUCH, MUCH, more efficient, than those in SF! I got there at 11:14 for my appointment at 11:20, and I was seen at exactly 11:20, yes. I was out at 11:30! So what! the efficiency, and customer service for this place is awesome. I saw a derm practitioner, dr. Elena, she rocks... altho, she didn't spend much time talking to me and stuff. I have been going to See Dr. Chui for many years. My first appointment resulted in her removing a half dollar area that contained Melanoma. After that visit I have been back maybe 15 or more times for follow-up. Plus my wife now sees Dr. Chui also. Dr. Chui and all of her staff are caring professional people. Wow, I'm kind of surprised at all these stellar reviews for Dr. Chui. I JUST came back from my first appointment with her and frankly, I'm quite disappointed. A little bit about me, I got into a bit of an accident about 7 weeks ago and have skin abrasions on large parts of my body, including a scar on my right side that I had 18 stitches for. I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Chui 4 weeks ago (the earliest I could get an appointment with her was today) and in the meanwhile have been religiously putting on creams, massaging, etc. on my forming scars and abrasions. Fast forward to today. My appointment was for 2:20pm - I arrive at 2:05pm and fill out the necessary paper work. I was promptly called in at 2:20pm - great! we're starting with a solid 4 star experience. The woman who took me into the appointment room sat down with me and asked me why I was here, etc. She was very friendly and nice - again, great! we're keeping with the 4 stars. Afterwards, Dr. Chui comes in. This is where the experience goes down. I wouldn't call her mean, per se, but bedside manners is not her forte. She's extremely brusque. Essentially, she told me there was nothing I could do for my skin abrasions. Ok...I'm disappointed but if there's nothing I can do, there's nothing I can do. But here's the kicker, she essentially tells me 'well, if you want to FEEL better, go ahead and do what you're doing, but it won't make a difference." Ok. Yeah. Well, if it was making me FEEL better then, it sure isn't going to keep making me feel better. I asked her more questions, she answered in her own brusque way. Frustrated, I just changed the subject to some adult acne questions. If you're a world-class surgeon or you've cured cancer or know the secret to world peace, good for you - you don't need to worry yourself with little things like bedside manners. But for everyone else, bedside manners DO matter. Be NICE. Be FRIENDLY. Even if the news you have isn't going to be the one your patient wants to hear, there's ways to deliver the message in a much nicer way. My 2 stars are for Dr. Chui's lack of bedside manners. Unfortunately, I won't have the "pleasure" of experiencing whether or not she's good at making skin look better, since apparently I'm a hopeless case. Update (1 year later): I held off on publishing this review because I was concerned that maybe I was being too harsh; but nope, I'm going to publish this because after seeing Dr. Chui, I went to another dermatologist that was not only helpful and nice, but delivered results on my fresh scars! read more

He recalls how he had to reschedule his new patient appointment and the staff obliged professionally. I did not come for myself, I brought my mother for psoriasis treatment, but my mother does not know how to use a computer, so i'm posting this review as her daughter. I would highly recommend Dr. Chui for mild, moderate or severe psoriasis treatments. My mother has had severe psoriasis problems on her hands for about 10-12 years. Before treatment with Dr. Chui, my mother's psoriasis was bad! Every time she made a fist, her skin would break into small cuts around her hands AND every time she would rub her fingers she stated that she felt like the tips fingers were rubbing broken glass. In the past she has treated her psoriasis with cortisone shots (really bad for your bones) and steroid topical cream or ointments (ointments work best than cream for my mother). She has seen over 5 doctors in the period of 7 years. All doctors suggested this these treatments nothing else. I went online to research for more doctors or treatments. It was VERY HARD to find a doctor, and there was only one helpful website www.psoriasis.org We did not find 'Dr. Chui' or 'Allura Skin' online, she was recommended by a friend. Dr. Chui is very nice and knowledgeable about psoriasis. She has been the ONLY doctor and Allura skin has been the only place that provides more than just cortisone shots, creams, and/or ointments for treatment. Dr. Chui provided us with literature of various types of treatment. Dr. Chui recommended Phototherapy-Ultraviolet light B (UVB) and steroid topical ointment would be effective treatment for psoriasis. UVB penetrates the skin and slows the growth of affected skin cells. Treatment involved exposing the skin to an artificial UVB light source for a set length of time on a regular schedule. This treatment is administered by a professional. (also very nice) After a month of treatment, her psoriasis improved. Her skin redden and itch from exposure to the UVB light, but the ointment helped with the redness and itching. Now my mother every time she makes a fist, her skin does not break into small cuts AND no more feelings of broken glass when she rubs her fingers. I would HIGHLY recommend Dr. Chui if you have psoriasis problems. (Insurance cover about 95% of the cost.) read more

I've been seeing her for about two years or so, but recently I have not been able to make a weekday appointments for a stubborn keloid I have, and have been getting my treatments from her assistant. As a family, we have been going to Allura for years seeing Dr. Chui and Dr. Maltz. They have both been fantastic! Recently, I have seen Dr. Chui as Dr. Maltz took a break during Covid (I believe he is back now). She is wonderful, knowledgable and I know I am receiving excellent care. I've been seeing Dr. Chui for well over ten years and she has never been anything but kind and professional. Overall, she's an excellent doctor and a talented surgeon. I've had to have some stuff removed and every time she's worked on me, the incisions have healed quickly and without scars. Just returned from my first appointment with Dr. Chui and I'm very happy with the quality service from both the Doctor and her staff. Everyone was very friendly and they got me in on time (rare these days). Dr. Chui was attractive so it made me a little embarrassed to show her my moleage, but she immediately put me at ease with her professionalism and friendliness. She answered all my questions, including how to tan safely (I've recently decided to stop blinding people with my legs.) and she did not try to "sell" me on anything that I didn't need. I got a tentative clean bill of health and we agreed that I should go back in a year for a follow-up mole check, and for some reason I don't want to wait that long. Both my teenage sons have been seeing Dr Chui since they were 14 - after trying various medications for severe Acne, Dr Chui was able to diagnose the issue and pescribe a regime that has resulted in two young men very proud of their clear skin. Dr. Chui is a good dermat. The simple fact is that she isnt one of those chatty people - she is a professional dr and acts like one. She listens patiently and her advice/recommendations are to the point. She has been able to address my son's eczema as well as my skin issues correctly. It is possible that with children, her quiet nature can make a child less likely to feel at ease right away - but, we dont take our kids to the dr for a chat - we take them there for treatment. perhaps i did not encounter the Dr. Chui that others are discussing here :). I got to meet Dr Chui about a year ago, and today went to see her again I find it just amazing that folks out here have such extreme negatives and positives about this doctor. Maybe she had bad days, like all of us have. I went to see her today for really bad Psoriasis on my scalp and now is moving to my skin. I have met some great doctors and some with the worse bedside manners. A few people here find her very pleasant and others like me found her so cold with a stone face. When she entered the room, with her assistant who did not say hello. I am very friendly, and told her I was glad to see her. Maybe the folks who have really sour experiences with her she doesn't like. I also has to wait quite a fews to see her. And we spent about 6 or 7 minutes together. I am always prepared with questions. She gave me a cortizone injection on 2 spots on my scalp I told her I was so very uncomfortale with the itching and a few scabs. She is giving me a prescription for an ointment. Never spoke or told me anything. She kept saying Ok, so she is finished with the few minutes we spent. She never even said goodbye to, just rushed and darted out the door. This is awful. To me she had a bad energy and rude. Will never see her again. So many of these doctors have to be quick and get moving to the next patient. There only interested in the greens. So so sad. I was in a very bad mood and went home. My sweet little dog cheered me up. DON'T GO. I am being totally honest. Sorry this is so long. Psoriasis can drive you crazy. read more

We never got to see Dr. Chui but I'm compelled to write this. My Mom who's an elderly was referred by her primary physician to see her. My Mom has United Healthcare associated with Mills. I called to make the appt. & was told that Dr Chui is not associated with Mills. I asked the person to confirm because this is a physician referral. She told me again that Dr Chui is not associated with UHC-Mills. Since my Mom prefers a female doc who can speak Chinese I checked Mills-Sutter Health website and found Dr. chui is listed as one of the affiliated dermatogists. I decided to call Dr Chui's office again to confirm or in case I get a different person. I was told very clearly again that " no Dr. chui is not affiliated with Mills...'. I then decided to call Mills just to find out why Dr. Chui & her information is on their website when the office informed me otherwise, they confirmed that there is no mistake & that Dr. chui Is affiliated with Mills under the UHC Plan. Turned out that when Mills called Dr. Chui's office they were told a slightly different version. They were told that Dr. Chui is affiliated with Mills, but she's currently not accepting new patients until the month of June. Either the office person who answered the phone is completely incompetent, or my guess is Dr. Chui prefers patients with cosmetic needs and private $ vs elderly patient with insurance payments. Afterall maintaining beauty is a big industry ! I will not care to see a doctor with this mindset even though we could try to pursue an appt. in June with Mills patching the phone call through. read more

I'm surprised she got so many good reviews. I saw her recently and I was very disappointed. I asked her about my acne and she said go check with your OBGYN. She didn't suggest anything. I asked her about my acne scars and she said no cure or suggestions. I asked her for a skin problem I've been having for years and she didn't answer or have a medication for it. She just wanted to leave and go to the next patient. I'm very disappointed and would not want to see her again. What a waist of money. Dr, Chui is the greatest dermatologist I've ever had. I have eczema and have seen many many doctors over the years. Dr. Chui has been the only doctor that has been able to keep my eczema under control and stop the recurring flare ups. I was quite skeptical the first time I visited Dr. Chui, because my previous dermatologist would just brush me off when I asked questions about eczema. That was not the case here. Dr. Chui sat down with me and we talked with me about my history of eczema and past treatments. Dr. Chui then explained the plan of treatment for me. The treatment was unlike anything I had heard of, so I was doubtful. In less than 2 weeks, there was a noticeable change. It wasn't a temporary fix either. To this day, people are complementing me on how great my skin looks. I've since referred 3-4 people about Dr. Chui. My friends also agree that Dr. Chui is a great doctor. The entire staff working at the office is great as well. Everyone is so friendly, professional, and helpful to the patients. read more
