They have a 2 for $5.25 deal on Mondays (?). Applies to all rail drinks, which is darn cheap if you get some rail liquor. Really casual atmosphere where you can meet new people. A bloc away from Legends if you want to bar hop. Will definitely be back! :) Also, Nick is a great bartender. Can give you local recommendations and knows other bartenders in town. read more

We stopped in Rochester for a night on the way to visit grandma. Went out to grab a drink and SO glad we stopped here!! The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. Very typical warm Midwest bar. Great drinks and great prices. The cocktails were stiff and lots of different beers on tap. As a snack we were given free peanuts - score!!!! The best part of the night was the band - The Common Ground company was playing. They were a super fun group - complete with a banjo, uke and washboard. People were dancing and having a blast. Saw a schedule and they have lots of live music scheduled in the coming weeks! Check it out!! As extra entertainment - a small fight broke out while we were there. Bouncer we on point and escorted a guy that had a few too many out the door. The dude had already taken one to the face and had a bloody eye to prove it. Not his best look. Definitely recommend this spot if you're looking for a great laid-back and fun atmosphere!! read more

I was here on business and stopped by for a cocktail at lunch. I ordered a rum and Coke and it was a good pour. I asked for the ticket and I thought the bartender said $14.50.... I was like well ok then, and to clarify I said "how much?" It was $4.50, which is a great price. They have pool tables and it is a nice clean bar. read more

Fun place! Visited the rooftop on a Saturday night in late September and was able to stay comfortable thanks to their heat lamps. Liked the cute tealights they had up. Only walked through the inside but it seemed like a good mix of seating/standing/activities. A bit divey but aren't the best places!? My group of about 8 people was able to assemble enough chairs for us all and sit around a table. The music was good and at a perfect level. The staff was so friendly and it was clear that regulars like this place for a reason. read more

This is a great bar to come to if you just graduated college and are slowing trying to move into adulthood. Always has a lot of people and for being in flat Rochester the rooftop is pretty cool. Never had a bad time here but it's definitely a place to start the night before you finish and legends or Dooleys. read more

It's alright if don't mind being cramped, they do have 3 stories in the building so you can ha e live bands or go up to the roof top bar witch is pretty cool, bartenders are usually really nice. Prices are ehh I'd say expected, if your looking for a casual bar this isn't it. read more

Um, really? A rooftop bar overlooking both downtown Rochester and the corn water tower? Where booze is cheap, and people complain about this?! Where I come from (Canada), we embrace the sun whenever we can, so rooftop bar real estate is especially competitive. I find Kathy's a treat, especially the sketchy alleyway that leads to the bar, and the stairs, which I imagine is difficult to walk up if you're slightly tipsy. On a nice sunny day we enjoyed some nice cheap beers on the roof. The first floor was actually half-full. Must have been the people who hate brightness. The bar staff are whatever, but can you blame them? It was beautiful out. I'm sure everyone was in a crappy mood inside. I suppose like all dive bars I didn't have any expectations. Know your place. Don't order food, don't expect good service, just enjoy the grunginess for what it is. If I ever show out-of-towners around Rochester, I'd definitely stop off here. read more

Coming from a place like Minneapolis, to a place like Rochester was initially a shock. My original impression of Kathy's was not all that favorable compared with what I was used to. But after a few months, I got over my snobbery and became suffienctly local to enjoy the experience. Rochester is a small town, and you'll realize the same crowd hanging out most weekends at any given bar in town. I like Cathy's because it is more the 20-ish mix of "Young Professional" and "Still Daring to Be Great" crowd. The drinks are varied and affordable. The waitresses are friendly, fair and mostly attractive. The live music is a plus on the weekends, although it can border on too much stoner type rock. I love the rooftop patio. In my opinion, this instantly separates Kathy's from every other bar in town. The ability to choose from three different levels in the summer time really adds to the fun of the bar. It's also interesting to see which groups tend to go where. I've been living in Chicago for the past two years after spending a few in the Roch, but I imagine this is still the best bar in town. read more

I'd give them 4 stars for their rooftop patio, but 2 stars for the rest. They have a great week night happy hour; 2 for 1's until 7pm, and it seems to be on pretty much anything. We tend to happy hour here quite a bit when the rooftop is open, and the bartender on the roof is AWESOME! Great service and very friendly. As for the inside space, it's a little dark & dingy. I'm not sure if they ever open the 2nd floor, It's always been closed when I've been in here, but maybe they open it for the later night weekend crowd?? They do have live bands on the main floor, but it seems rather small down there. read more

This is "The Bar" downtown. The age group ranges from 21-50ish. You'll find mid-20's to mid-30's here most of the time. Big selection of booze, one bar on each of the three levels. 1st floor can get packed and hard to move around. Booths and bar. Stage area near the back. Restrooms and backdoor. 2nd floor has pool tables and a lot of bands play on this floor. Smaller bar, basic drinks and beers. 3rd floor is the roof. Lots of room. Gas lamps for heat when it gets cold. Smaller bar with the basics. Great place to drink as it's quiet compared to the indoor floors when bands play. Nice skyline view of Roch. I really like Kathy's. Im not sure if they cook anything, but hey, you're there for the beer and to hang with your peers. I NEVER drive to kathy's, for me that would be a huge mistake after drinking for hours. Parking is off street or in the ramps. Few hotels in the area. Lots to eat. Porn shop around the corner. read more

Very nice place. We were there with a group of 10 people on a Saturday night in August after Goonie's Comedy Club. I had never been there before this. I thought the main floor was kind of dark and not inviting, but we ended up n the roof top. Loved it! It was very busy so it took awhile to get a seat, but it was worth the wait. read more

Oh, Kathy's. Such memories we've had. Having been a long time patron of your beer soaked establishment, I have gotten away with much. Only here have I ever been able to leave my game of Risk going on one of your booth tables so that I may drive down the street to get stoned and pick up a pizza from Little Caesers on the way back. Only here have I been able to drop countless bottles and have them break all over and create a mess, or spill my beer all over your baristas and customers without fear of ever being cut off or thrown out. You're bouncers, they know me, as do your adorable waitresses, even if I have moved away from Rochester and haven't set foot in your bar for months to a year at a time. Only here am I able to coax the DJ into letting me plug my ipod in and take over the music selecting for a bit. Yes, Kathy's. You are a giver of the good times. You put up with my drunken shit. You let me talk smack, write on your walls, puke on your floors, and be as loud and crazy as I wanna be. You've never judged me. You offer me peanuts to sober me up, but you don't fogive me when I'm beyond the point of sobering for the night. You let me make fun of the band Saliva for still being around when no one loves them and for having to play in Rochester because Minneapolis won't take them. So much stuff you allow me to do. I have been a costumers of Kathie's since it was Hollywood Bar and Gus and Kathie purchased it and cleaned it up! In Fact I was on the Crew or 6 others that made it possible to even have a second let alone 3rd floor back in 2000! I have been a Regular there for many many years & feel its become a cl-icky place with the same arrogant snotty attitude that runs through my sad hometown. I went in after a very emotional day on Jan. 31 2020 , had my 2 two Hearted Ales and felt i better get something to eat so left to go Grab some so-so wildly over priced Thai across the street & spent 75 dollars on Thai Red curry for one and 2 weak Mai Thais? I returned an hour latter still buzzed and was served 1/2 bottle of Jameson Whiskey , ouch paid in cash and soon after was escorted out the back door no sober cab no offer of coffee and in fact . The police were called and by thew time i got 2 blocks I was surrounded by Buddies of theirs * Rochester Corrupt R . P. D .???? I was hence arrested for an assault in which not only was i incapable of committing , but NEVER even happened?? The bouncers have know me For year yet the Manager was a old Loan Officer of my Real estate career and is obviously still in thew Fraud biz as she not only Called The Police She Snitched me out for having weed on me ??? This place is your usual dark tavern but I'd say it's probably one of the dirtier bars in downtown Rochester. We still manage to usually have a pretty good time here. The bathrooms are kind of dirty too but the one bright spot for this place is the rooftop bar that's always a good time. Service can be hit or miss too. If you're looking for just a basic party bar this is a good choice. I wouldn't recommend it for a first date or anything. read more

This bar has a roof top bar and an elevator to get you up there. this is a good thing b/c walking down steps after cocktailing can be risky.
