My 84 year old dad and I stopped to eat We both had the salad bar and he had one trip through and didn't even fill the plate. Only to find out after the fact that the salad bar was $17.99 each! No mushrooms, no protein (ham, chicken, eggs). The service was good. Waitress refilled our waters fairly promptly. Ambience- it was tidy and not dingy like some can be. We stopped in on the recommendation of a friend and were very glad we did. The rotisserie chicken nachos supreme was just the thing after an exhausting day and the even had my husband's favorite beer. Everything was just perfect. :) I also noticed some very tasty looking burgers and wraps at the next table. Would love to come back and explore the menu further. This place is the essence of wholesome Americana. Everything from the atmosphere to the customer service to the food. I was really impressed!! I ordered the smash burger for dine-in and the wedge salad to go, and they were both amazing!! The burger was an homage to the classic Big Mac--except, unlike the fast food icon, every ingredient in Pappy's version tasted fresh and was brimming with flavor. It was honestly the best cheeseburger I've had in years!! I also loved that they offered tater tots as an accompaniment! It rounded out the meal beautifully! The salad was such a joy to eat! I ordered it with shrimp, and what I expected was a small handful of tiny cocktail shrimp, what I actually received were a kabob of massive grilled prawns. The other ingredients brought such a flavorful and textural balance...the abundance of chopped bacon, the juicy tomatoes, the tanginess of bleu cheese. I think I have a new favorite salad!! The staff were so fun and pleasant to speak with and they were so knowledgeable and enthusiastic about their food! Every square inch of the restaurant's decor had a real "home" feeling to it! Came with a group on NYE. Admittedly, the place was packed, even with an early seating. The not so good: The table was tiny and uncomfortable for a group of 6. The waitress was clearly stressed, though as above this was probably an unusually busy night. Ordered a filet, to be cooked medium- it was almost entirely pink and cool - more rare; disappointing given the $30 price. The au gratin potatoes were disappointing as well- tasted like the canned nacho cheese sauce served with chips at sporting events/movie theaters. The fish was delicious and you got a trip to the salad and soup bar. my husband ordered the fries and they were very good and I ordered the tots and they were nice and crispy. I ordered a margarita. It was kind of small, but it was only seven dollars and it was delicious. The prices were. not really expensive, but not cheap. Kinda of in the middle but worth it to us. The salad bar was equipped with ham and cheese salads,bean soup,bread,cole slaw,spinach and a few other items.Everything just lacked flavor.The bean soup had absolutely no salt.I could go on about how bad it was. Ordered the turkey,bacon and avocado sandwich half.It was not good.Sloppily made and mushy avocados. My Pepsi was watered down. Our server was the only one working and she tried to make in customer service and attitude what they lacked in food flavor. The brunch buffet leaves a lot to be desired - I don't want to beat up the food, but damn...the scrambled eggs were burned, with dark brown parts, and they were rubbery and old. The bacon was also burned and crispy, and most of the pieces were crumbled and broken. The biscuits had gotten hard and dry in the holding table, and the gravy was thick and salty. The hash browns were soggy and bland - but they looked like they'd maybe been pretty good at some point long before we got there...but we were there less than an hour after they'd opened. My impression was that they cooked it all ahead, and simply left it. Maybe we caught them on a bad day, maybe they were short staffed, who knows - but it wasn't worth the time or money. TBH, the employee cafeteria at the clinic does a better job, for half the cost. The service was very pleasant, and the place seemed clean, but the decor and ambiance were really dated. Unfortunately, the unappealing and poorly held food was a deal breaker. We were certain that we'd have spent less and had better food at any of the many choices in town. Not single diner friendly... was told there would be a thirty -40 minute wait and would be better at the bar, yet the groups after me (with no reservations) were seated in less than 10. Food was ok. Hands down the best place in Rochester to watch the Vikings!! $25 all you can drink Bud Light, well-stocked Bloody bar, BOGO 1/2 apps during the game, raffle tickets with every purchase for the halftime drawings PLUS entries for a free jersey given away EVERY game!! Oh, and free purple shots when we score. It's a sea of purple, excited crowd, lots of friendly banter and cheering - SO MUCH FUN! We were in town for a medical appointment and were trying to decide where to eat. We tentatively decided on Pappy's, since that's what our grand-daughter calls my husband, lol! Then when we were in the elevator at our clinic, we overheard the couple next to us say they were eating there because it's so good! My husband got a taco salad and said it was fair, not fantastic. He will try something else next time. I got a bleu burger, with coleslaw on the side. I had the waitress, Tasha, bring the coleslaw first. It was to die for! Some of the best coleslaw I've ever had. Then she brought me a huge Bleu Moon burger slathered with bleu cheese, mushrooms, bacon and crispy onions. One of the best things I ever ate and I devoured the whole darn thing. (I certainly wouldn't eat like that too often, lol.) Tasha brought catsup on the side and I didn't even use it, would have been overkill. I saw someone sharing a delicious looking dessert of fried cinnamon covered tortillas, topped with cheesecake, chocolate sauce, strawberries and blueberries, and whipped cream. (See photo.) We were in Rochester on business and a friend referred us to Pappy's. They were pretty busy when we got there but we didn't have to wait for a table. Our server had lots of tables but we didn't feel ignored. We ordered onion rings to start -- they were DELISH! "Real" onion and obviously battered there -- not that fresh from the freezer kind. I had the walleye filet with fries and salad bar. DH had a burger with tots. My salad bar was really good and fresh. The walleye was tasty but had some bones. DH enjoyed his burger and tots. i recently moved to the area, and read great things about this place. a mom and pops place. i fully support them. ive been twice. the first time was great. service and food spot on. people were great and wanted to to go back again.. the second time?? makes me never want to go back. the service was terrible. there were 6 of us, 4 adults and 2 children.. we sat down for breakfast and there were only 3 other tables ahead of us. they had already been sitting and looked as they had already ordered.. we sat, after about 15 mins got water and a coffee... another 15 mins we finally ordered. (30 mins so far).. we did so, and then the server came back and asked us what our order was again because he couldnt even read his own writing.. ok we thought sh1t happens.. but this is were it really fell apart. as we watched the other tables SLOWLY get their orders.. we were still sitting there.. we sat.. and sat and sat. the server game over eventually saw we still didnt have our food (mind you out of 4 tables 3 of them finally had their food two had left one was waiting for their bill)... he said he would check on our food and light a fire under that cook.. (ya think? ) .. told him after almost an hour if sitting there we were def ready for our food.. another 15 mins and watching the server walking in and out of the back.. nothing.. i went up to the counter, where a person who seemed to be the owner or manager, i told him we have been sitting for an hour or more with no food.. he was shocked said he would get the food out.. (my guess is if he did whatever they cooked was on the counter and cold)... anyways, after 10-15 more mins.. still no food.. we finally got up and walked out.. have no idea what happened afterwards.. we went to culvers . walked in, ordered and had our food in less than 20 mins.. will i go there again?? TBD. at least it WONT be for breakfast, thats for sure. read more

I've been a few times before and this review is long over due. Simply, Pappy's rocks! From a cool bar with decent tap selection and great wings, to a classic meat and potatoes place with a salad bar, you can't go wrong. Without Roscoe's open for normal business anymore, Pappy's is the new king of fish fry. I suggest the broiled. My wife does gluten free and decided to "cheat" on her old favorite, a French dip. She took one bite and I saw "the look". So I asked if it was good and she mustered a slow head nod "yes". On the way home she said, "That was a completely satisfying French dip." I guess we found our new favorite "cheat" place. We even did wings to-go early in the covid days and they were smart enough to leave all the sauces on the side so the wings were still super crispy when we got home. A+ move. Not their first rodeo. You can either view the atmosphere as dark and ever so slightly dive bar-ish, or you can just see it for what it really is, a cozy and friendly joint with great food and drinks. read more

We came to Pappy's because we had heard that the owners had experience in the restaurant business, and we were open for a new experience. If you measure your dinner by the amount of food for the money, you will give this place five stars. If you measure you dinner by the service, you will also give this place five stars. The salad bar was three stars, and the ambience was three stars. However, something was off with the food. I'm not sure what the problem was, but nothing tasted very good. The onion rings were tasteless and chewy. The meat was flavorless, and the other fried things may have been cooked in old oil. I'm not sure what the problem was, but we would not make another visit. read more
