I just finished a three day printmaking class with Katie in her SOMArts Chrysalis Studio. What fun! What great learning. She briefly taught a lesson at the beginning of each day and I was pleased that the typical use of plants and other materials turned out so much more beautifully than in other printmaking classes I've taken. This is thanks to Katie's great sense of design and her superb printmaking expertise. The inks and equipment she provides produce superior results. She is fun and funny, but also quite serious about the craft so you can really learn a lot either as a one-time event or if you are into printmaking for the long haul. Her studio is amazingly organized with everything right at hand. Even though there were four of us in the class, we had plenty of room to move around to run our pieces on her lovely Griffin press. I recently took Katie's Monotype printmaking class and LOVED it! I had never taken a print class before, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable experience. Katie is incredible. The classes I took were fantastic. The instruction truly teaches you enough to be dangerous. And in this case, dangerous turns out to involve ink and paper and presses and more fun than I've had in quite a long while. As a teacher and artist and great conversationalist, there is probably no one that better combines all of those things. I learned, I created and I had a lot of fun doing it. I really, really looked forward to each Wednesday class - to the opportunity to learn something and to create something and to see what fellow students were doing. I just love Katie. Her instruction is inspiring, informative, super creative and super fun. I have been attending her courses for years and I am still learning something new and fabulous each time. She is a master in her field and one of the best conveyors of information and instruction I have ever seen. Katie is a wonderful teacher who is very knowledgeable and a fine print maker. I have a masters in education so i know the elements of a great teacher and a marvelous classroom atmosphere and Katie's got it going! first she makes everyone at all levels feel welcome and makes sure everyone is comfortable. Her studio is amazingly clean and well organized with a few signs that tell you what to do so you don't feel like an idiot. her teaching method is amazing because she gets everyone started often at different points in their projects, answers questions and then works with the person who need the most attention, she moves about the room helping each student move forward and slides easily back to addressing us as a group when she want to demonstrate something. she's encouraging and positive and can show students the road toward improvement without anyone feeling criticized. Artists often have trouble teaching other artists for several reasons and one sure fire killer of imparting knowledge is if the teacher feels competitive. S/he may not be competitive with the students but feel the competition of the market place. and then they have enormous problems teaching their finer techniques. But Katie is 100% comfortable sharing wonderful discoveries and methods! even the details of how she got very special results on some of her prints. Katie also did a top notch job in helping me to work with my physical limitations, offering advice and stools and hi counters to find working habits to accommodate my bad back. I'm really learning copper plate etching for my art. Katie is amazingly knowledgeable about printing in general and experimental uses of color in particular. this was the reason i took her course to begin with. but i love her class and it's so much fun that i'm taking it again. the atmosphere is fun and easy going and her well organized studio and small class size eliminate tension. Katie is a successful printmaker who teaches both monoprinting and linocut printing in her studio, surrounded by all the equipment (including a giant etching press) and materials, so everything is very hands on.
