Despite the challenges of the pandemic (and in part because of that), she and her wonderful assistant Alan Clark gave us far more attention and instruction than we could have expected through a series of detailed Zoom meetings. As one who was struggling with the technology of a new camera plus LightRoom and PhotoShop, I emerged with much more confidence. Then the trip to Sylvan Heights Bird Park in Scotland Neck, N.C., was the icing on the cake. This reserve, set up mainly to educate the public and protect endangered species, is a perfect place for practicing photography among thousands of beautiful birds, in settings that feel like natural ones. Even the birds seem happy there!

There was a ton of information, and a lot of aha moments. I now know what ALL my buttons on my Canon are for! Instead, they offered their wedding guests the opportunity to have a caricature done by Ty Schafrath, better known as Tooney Ty. Not only is Ty a fantastic caricaturist, but he's also a highly successful animation artist whose drawings appear in works featuring Dora the Explorer, Disney's Princess and the Frog, Angry Beavers, and much more. He has a fantastic personality, and the time spent as he sketched us went by in a flash. He serves the greater Raleigh area and would be a great addition to your corporate events, festivals, conventions, and of course weddings!

I always love hitting up this gallery during FirstFriday, they also usually offer wine and occasionally even beer (although it's gone quickly, so arrive early in the evening if you're looking for a glass!) The space is more open, and a little bit larger. You can still walk around and meet the artists. When West Martin is blocked off for First Friday's, it makes for a pretty cool spot to hang out. Inside Designbox, you'll find a lot of work by local creatives. Paul Friedrich's nerdy illustrations are always fun to look at. I also really like Michelle Lyon's R-rated stuffed cats. If you go to the store every month, not much will change around. They will always have a rotating main exhibit, but the merchandise will look similar. Still, I enjoy stopping by every month or two. I always find myself buying a gift for someone here.
