This used to be our go to sushi place when my husband and I lived in Appleton area over 16 years ago. Since then we have had the privilege of eating at some amazing places all across the world including many Michelin starred restaurants. When we came back to Appleton, we wanted to try this place again to see if we still thought it was good. It is. It's not the best sushi I've ever had but it is more than passable for a place in Appleton WI. Bit too much rice in the nigiri but fish was generally very good. There's limited options when it comes to sushi in the area so Katsu-ya definitely fills that gap. Service is quick if you're dining in the sushi only area. This is my "go to" place when going to the Pantages Theater. The food and service are great and if you tell your server that you are going to the Pantages, he or she will make sure you get out of there on time to make it to the theater. Things they forgot: rice, curry, not to make it an hour too early and let the pork cool to room temp. Great service. Clean higher end venue. Dim lit, can be romantic. Very busy place. Very expensive place as well. Most Korean bbq styles are typically all you can eat. This place was by the plate. Ended up being about $50-60/person. Sauces were good and impressive however the rest of the actual meats were okay. Nothing special, everything was fresh, but small portions. We were passing by Appleton on a trip and stopped at this restaurant for dinner. It was fun watching the chef cook our food in front of us, but the food itself was pretty disappointing. We all got hibachi dishes which came with soup, salad, rice, vegetables, choice of meat, tea, and ice cream. The soup, tea, and ice cream were fine. The salad was too watery, and the vegetables, meat, and fried rice were wayyy too salty. It was difficult finishing all my food because it was just too salty. Yakiniku is great with nicely seasoned proteins.The sweet marinade is great and it adds a lot of flavor. Our family also went for the hibachi. Just visiting here and figured we'd check it out since it was across the street. They take reservations which we made in advance and were seated right away. I'm not really sure if this was beneficial but the place seemed to be pretty busy when we left. My friend and I did the Yakiniku which neither of us had done before. I'd say this was pretty similar to Korean bbq because you cook your meats on the table in front of you. We ordered pork belly in addition the santen set which comes with three meats, rice and veggies. The food was enough for the two of us. I think I would've ordered more veggies as it was just a slice of onion, one slice of green pepper, two slices of zucchini and a mushroom. The meats were decent. I wish the pork belly cut was thicker. It's more like a bacon slice here. They have three sauces you can dip which is different from kbbq where the meats are generally marinated. I was not a fan of the citrusy one but that's a personal preference. The server was helpful in acclimating us to the environment. I'd probably come back to try the sushi and would hold off on doing the yakiniku. read more

Always amazing! We love doing hibachi, but also the grill, her own tables by the windows, provide such an amazing ambience and fun activity to grill your own food while chatting with friends. There, salmon, udon was incredible! So happy the server recommended that to us. I also cannot leave without ordering some of their sushi. This place is very spacious and there's a few options on what vibes you're going for. They have a main dining room, with booths, where you can enjoy a Yakiniku (very similar to K-BBQ, minus the sides). This is actually a sister restaurant to Nakashima which is located in green bay. They have very similar menu. We ordered from the bbq menu and had additional sushi items. The meats were well seasoned and goes well with the 3-flavir dipping sauce. It also comes with a bowl of rice. The ambience is nice. The sushi rice and ponzu sauce can be very sour, but otherwise this place is recommended! read more

So.... I struggled to write this review for a long time but after last night, the nail is definitely on this coffin. The service: super low --- I don't understand why but maybe people are not trained well? We placed our order and things showed up at random times - for example, my friend didn't get her miso soup until almost everyone was done eating. My Chilean Sea Bass Yaki showed up and I forgot I even ordered it. The wait staff disappears for a long time between taking the order, getting the food and check to us. The food: it's mediocre at best. The fried shrimp shumai is very doughy ... it's like shrimp mixed with fluff. The Chilean Sea Bass Yaki was overcooked - it's sea bass which is a very delicate fish so I should not be tasting tough/chewy edges. I've tried the cook top and that wasn't bad but it wasn't anything to write home about. The sushi didn't taste fresh and was so plain, underwhelming and disappointing. The drinks: Super sweet even for someone that likes sweet, fruity drinks... and they run about $8 each. Nakashima is the sister restaurant and it's pretty much the same. This was my first trip to Katsu-Ya, and now I'm wondering why I waited so long. I enjoyed every single thing about my experience here, starting with the interesting and beautiful decor. We went to a hibachi room, and were seated at an empty grill. Since there was only Lori an I, we had to wait for more people showed up. The wait was not long at all, and our server was enthusiastic, friendly, and helpful. We ordered drinks and I ordered an AAC roll while we were waiting. I watched the hibachi chef's show at the table next to ours. It was fun to watch! Soon, a few more people showed up and so did our chef. Our chef was not quite the showman as the guy at the next table, but he was an excellent cook. I made it a little difficult for him by ordering a vegetarian meal, which he took in stride and handled expertly. Lori ordered chicken. We both loved our meals, although I filled up pretty quickly after the excellent sushi. All the while, our servers provided excellent and truly friendly customer service. Lori finished dinner with a little ice cream, but I was happily to full for more. So, 5-star service, a 5-star meal, 5-star decor, 5-star overall experience. We'll be back! read more

First experience with Japanese cuisine at Katsu Ya. It is truly a huge place. First we went to the Hibachi grill but then figured that we wanted to sit at the Yakiniku table. Yakinuku - The grill at the table :) Ordered Gyoza ( Pork dumplings) which was good with the sauce. For the grill, we had chicken breast and it was amazing. Katsu curry with shrimp was a let down for me though my partner liked it. Maybe it was a different cuisine and so I didn't like it much.
