We had a great experience! The servers were friendly and knowledgeable about gluten free options. Almost everything can be made gluten free! They have a dedicated fryer and they make their own (gluten free) breading. I started with Mark's famous French Onion soup (you must have this!), them went on to the Bavarian platter that includes Veiner Schnitzel (oh damn, that was good), Bavarian sausage, smoked pork chop with apple sauce, and gluten free dumplings. My wife had the Reuben sandwich and onion rings. I wish they had a younger clientele. Younger folks would really enjoy their great selections! I didn't know how busy it gets, but they had plenty of tables open, although we came at about 5pm. The ambience was favorable to the dining. The lighting was intimate but not dark. This was my first time having dining at Mark's East Side. I was by myself and had dinner at the bar. My bartender was AnaMarie. I asked her for a few recommendations and when she finished I asked how the Sauerbraten was and she said "if you like Sauerbraten, you will love ours" so I ordered it with red cabbage and spaetzels. After having a couple of bites she asked me how it was...I simply said that I would have liked the spaetzels to not be covered it the gravey and that it was a bit to overwhelming for my taste. I told her that I'm not criticizing the chef here. I'm sure the chef knows how they want it to be prepared, it's a personal preference. She thanked me for my feedback and without saying a word she went to the kitchen and brought me a side of spaetzels without gravy. It completely changed the meal for me and provided a much more balanced meal (again, my preference, and maybe not everyone's). The point here is AnaMarie asked for feedback, took it gracefully and sprang into action to make my experience better. Much much better. This restaurant is lucky to have her on the team! This place is a well oiled machine. Wow--everyone hustles here. We stopped in on a Friday and had fish: one haddock fry and the other broiled. Everything was on point. The broiled fish was cooked perfectly to temp and well seasoned. The fried fish--loved the batter and that it's not greasy. Wonderful local German restaurant and bar. Went during happy hour on a Tuesday. Sat at a high top away from the bar. Bar nearly full but the noise was not bad at all! Very nice interior. Waitress very friendly and quick to bring out our drinks and food. Speaking of food...sauerkraut balls fantastic! Which then DH had the tips and potato balls with the fench onion soup! Top notch! I had the French dip beef sandwich with ajou. Delish!! We could tell the beef was local and farm raised. So happy we picked this place for supper while in Appleton! This well-known restaurant on Wisconsin Avenue definitely lives up to its reputation. The food and the Service was excellent when I recently tried it for the first time. My only complaint is it seems to be one of those establishments that wants to stick you in the bar for an extended time and we were there with kids and don't drink. read more

Another great visit to Mark's East Side. We had 6:30 reservations, but they were able to seat us about 6:10. We had a group of 6 tonight. The bar was very crowded when we arrived, but we did not have to wait long for a beverage. The Mahi-mahi was quite delicious. It was served in a bed of wild rice with mango salsa and fresh asparagus. This paired so very nicely. Even with the large group, our food came out in a timely manner. Our server, Carly was very attentive. She did a great job making sure beverages from the bar were kept fresh. Dessert for myself was a grasshopper. It was a bit larger than I expected. Unfortunately, after such an amazing dinner, I could not finish mine. My husband brought home a wonderful German chocolate cheesecake. I would have never been able to eat it all....but in my refrigerator, I feel I may fit in a bite or two. The dessert menu is quite extensive, so leave room for the tasty treats. read more

Reuben sandwich, German Pork Sandwich, Ham & Cheese on Rye, Pecan-Encrusted Chicken Salad, Three-Meat Tomato Soup were each delicious with excellent presentation. Bread on the sandwiches were all toasted crispy and perfectly on both sides and brought out fresh. Had to try the Sauerkraut Balls appetizer, which were a treat. From our focused, but efficient and friendly server Niki, who gave us appropriate attention yet excellent service, to the assistants keeping our water glasses full, and suggestions for Door County by the hostess when we left, the staff were all professional and pleasant. Really impressed by our server Niki, as she handled numerous tables during a busy time. The combination of the delicious food, great service and dining room/bar decor, spacing, and setup all make this an excellent choice for dining. The best part about this place is probably the ambience/decor, which has a very retro feel. Our waiter was very friendly and efficient, too! Their famous french onion soup is quite good, although the soggy bread definitely left something to be desired. Both my date and I were pretty underwhelmed by our meals, especially considering the prices. I got the chicken cordon bleu which was decent, but not what one would generally expect from the dish. She got the hot honey chicken special and found it to be quite bland. Dessert was delicious though! So, overall, a mixed experience but I don't think we will be back. read more

We are in town for a celebration life for my mother and heard your perch is the best in town. We had a party of twelve and your staff was absolutely wonderful and accommodating. One of my sisters-in-law has severe food allergies and can easily cause a life threatening situation. Your staff allowed us to dine outside, your chef came out and made sure he knew exactly what her allergies were. Emily our waitress was so welcoming and attentive to the special needs and to the entire group. The food was as delicious as we had heard and your staff went above and beyond making our evening a memorable one. So glad this place was recommended to us several months ago. We live in Green Bay, but it's an easy enough drive for this to now be our favorite restaurant. Service is super-friendly and the food is beyond compare, north of Milwaukee. I was tired of having to go all the way there when I wanted great German food (the place in Lena doesnt have sauerbraten and they no longer offer purple cabbage). I never get appetizers, but I do here. The sauerkraut balls were a hit, and last night I tried the Bavarian Scotch egg, and wow! Was that tasty! So far I have only ordered German entrees, and my hubby has stuck with the liver and onions. Not once have we gotten one item or course that was less than ideal. Even if not everyone in your party likes German cuisine, this is still a great restaurant option as they have a great variety to offer including steaks, seafood, chicken dishes and sandwiches. I have to admit to being a bit picky about sauces I'm served, but I'm certainly not complaining about any I've been served here. Everything is always spot-on! I'm pretty stingy with five stars; however, Mark's has earned it over the course of time. My family and I have gone to the restaurant for many lunches and dinners over the past twenty years; it has been consistently great. Start with the bar. Very good old fashioned drinks and a wide variety of special mixed drinks. A bonus are the half priced appetizers available in the lounge area. Always a nice way to start out your supper club visit. The dining room is very nice, without being stuffy. The menu is not huge but offers a wide variety of choices for everyone in your group. When given a choice, start your meal with the French Onion soup. I believe it is the best available. Mark's is known for the German cuisine it serves. If you haven't tried German food before, this is the place to try it. A friend took a German visitor to the restaurant recently; the man said the German entrees were as good as any he had in Germany. I'd accept that as high praise. Aside from the food and drinks, the restaurant has quality staff. Many of them have been there for years. They are always polite and attentive. On most visits, you are also likely to see the owner(s) walking through the restaurant to ensure everyone enjoys their experience. Tried Marks for the first time. Got the broiled haddock and 6 oz steak filet. The onion soup is good. The salad is good as well. The haddock was okay but nothing special. Not a lot of seasoning so I liked that as it wasn't super salty. The steak was burnt on one side and the flavor wasn't there due to it. Some A1 helped. The service was good. They did take $15 off for the burnt steak which is nice but honestly I won't be rushing back. The prices are a little high which is fine for a meal that matches. The food was amazing. It was very nostalgic to go to the restaurant as I grew up in the neighborhood. My mom used to work at this restaurant 60 years ago. I had all you can eat fish with fries. The fish was good. The fries were mediocre. I had the scotch Bavarian eggs for an appetizer they were great. The beet salad was excellent. Highly recommended. Unfortunately the service was slightly below mediocre. I'm not used to the waitress just dumping the food and very rarely visiting us. The restaurant would be nicer if they could somehow add outdoor seating but it was nice inside your typical restaurant. Nothing special. read more

OMGosh!!! I'm not necessarily a salad person but some friends lifted me some Marks Eastside Bacon Salad Dressing and oh my gosh!!! I got some baby spinach, sliced some onion, added a hard boiled egg and topped it off with Mark's Bacon Dressing! Best Salad I've ever had in my life!!! It's gone and I live in Las Vegas. I'm sad to rate this one star as the food has always been exceptional..BUT I, and many others, have repeatedly asked for the light bulb lighting the entrance to be replaced. Last week when we ate there again I asked the hostess again to please relay the message about the unsafe lighting. Her reply was "we give the owner this message frequently but nothing changes". The owners lack of concern about his customers safety doesn't seem to be due to financial issues, as his business is booming. Apparently he just doesn't give a hoot about our safety.
