I first went to consult David back in March 2022 and he was great. He answered all my tax questions and I was in and out of the office in no time. I thought to myself, great, I just found an amazing accountant in my neighborhood. During that time, I explained to David about my situation and he responded to come back to me when tax season is over and all he has to do is to file a 1040x (to amend my tax return - 1040). (Side note: The issue that I had was that I initially e-filed my taxes. The federal rejected it but the state accepted it. Which is why I went to seek professional services in resolving the problem). So on December 12, 2022 at 1:30pm I went to see David and his office was busy. I told David I did not have an appointment and I asked, "should I make an appointment"? He decided to hear me out at first but then he passed my case to one of his employees. The employee explained to me that since I did not file my taxes 2020 taxes with them, there is nothing that they can do and I would have to come back during tax season. I tried to explain to them what David told me back in April (to come back after tax season) and David told his employee in Chinese "just ignore him, he is too annoying". Yup, just because someone doesn't speak the language, doesn't mean the person does not understand. The funny thing is that, just over the weekend, the same family friend asked me how was my experience with David because she wanted to file her taxes with him for the upcoming year. I raved about how great he was the first time around but after this experience, it got me to think: if a family friend doesn't even use your service in the first place, it is extremely telling of your professional demeanor or the lack thereof. This review will probably not affect the business but if you are looking for a tax accountant in Elmhurst, stay far away from this place.

He misspelled one of our names and put the wrong address on our tax return, basic information that should absolutely be correct. When we asked to sit down with him for a few minutes to review everything and make sure it was accurate, he flat-out refused and became immediately nasty. At that point, we asked for our check back so we could have our taxes done elsewhere by someone who would actually give us the time of day. He told us he had already cashed it, so we asked him to write us a check. He did but then, as he was handing it to us, he pulled it back to make a copy. He then handed us the copy and sarcastically asked why we would need a copy of a check. When we said because he handed it to us, he responded, "Yeah, because I wanted to see how little you pay attention." It only got worse. He told us the only reason he agreed to do our taxes was because of who our family is, and that we couldn't possibly be related to them because we are "too stupid." When we reminded him that we were there because he made mistakes and that he should be apologizing instead of belittling us, he said "I don't apologize". On top of that, his bookkeeping is atrocious - He will send you bills even though you already paid him long ago . He will make appointments for you to come in and he doesn't show up. Over the past three years, Medows put more preparation burden on his customers (requiring completion of lengthy, convoluted forms which I've never had to prepare for a tax PREPARER before), while complaining that our taxes took a long time to complete. We had to check their work for errors. We learned to expect inaccurate answers and incomplete research when we did have questions - and often completed the research ourselves. He was very helpful when we had a shift in our income/expenditure situation three years ago. Hence two stars. But then our taxes got very simple for two years in a row. A few months ago, I asked for an itemized bill for last year's expenses and/or a fair estimate for this year's work. I was told we were too much work, and it wasn't worth his time to retain us as customers - no answer, no transparency. This is probably par for the course in tax preparation, and there's nothing particularly bad about this service. But there's nothing particularly good either. We'll spend as much time preparing our own taxes this year as we did preparing and checking Medows' work last year, and we'll save $335. For even mildly intrepid souls, I recommend using a tax accountant only when you have a big change in financial circumstances, and in between just use TaxAct.com and a couple of calls to the IRS. It's really not that hard.

They're messing with people's lives and run the risk of making people have to file for an extension and accrue penalties. We were still not satisfied as no advice of any kind was provided, only an excel spreadsheet that looks likes a bad version of TurboTax from 2 decades ago, Jonathan then changed his mind and offered to reimburse only 50% of our payment knowing that no service was still provided at this time other than 5 minutes over the phone to confirm a couple of accounting points we already researched for. He obviously stopped responding and we had to dispute the charge. Long story short: a dishonest thief
