Another wonderful haircut by Anita. I had been letting my hair grow throughout the pandemic. I decided to donate it to Locks of Love, but was scared because shoulder length hair seemed short to me. I have frizzy, wavy hair and have only had hair hair shorter than shoulder length twice over a 40-year period. I told Anita that I wanted a wash and wear haircut -- no styling. I also wanted some length in front and shorter in back. I showed her a picture of a "wolf cut." She warned me that the hair of the model was thicker than mine. Then she set to work. She did it! The cut is cute, my hair no longer looks frizzy, and it's no work. My boyfriend gave me multiple spontaneous compliments on separate occasions- quite atypical behavior for him. This place is NOT a spa- DO NOT GET A FACIAL HERE. I went in on Saturday for a facial, and today (Tuesday) my face is peeling so bad I might as well have sat ON THE SUN and washed my face with a cheese grater. My 1st clue was laying on the bed- and when she commented about how good my skin looked and the lack of clogged pores, I thought: well, you're not using a magnifier or a proper light. For context, there's a bedside lamp- the light from the moon would be stronger. There was a point in the beginning when I thought I should just leave as this is going to turn out badly. I had a bikini wax here today and the price was great only $35 but the experience left a lot to be desired my number one thing is that the room you went to get the wax and facials was not clean and had dents/holes in the wall. Obviously I understand that walls can take a while to fix if there's a dent but the lack of cleanliness made me uncomfortable getting the wax. I could tell that the person waxing me wasn't used to doing bikini waxes which also made me a little nervous. Looks like it would be a good place for a hair cut though. read more

I liked Anita, the owner, and I wanted to like this salon. That said, I am very unhappy with my hair experience. I think this spa is probably best for other treatments or very simple/straightforward hair changes. I was platinum blonde earlier in the year and I have been trying to blend my natural color to the ends and blend the blonde up towards the root. So, think highlights and lowlights. I have been coming to this salon for hair services since earlier this year. Their services are cheaper than most of the Aveda salons in the area, and they are right nearby my house so I thought this would be a good, convenient solution. In July I had a service with Anita (low lights) but my hair was still not blended enough (still very visible difference between the top and the bottom of my hair) after she finished so I came back for more low lights. The way she did this though (density of lowlights) my hair then became much too dark. I didn't say anything because I liked Anita, and I didn't want to trouble her. And I thought my hair would lighten up over time, which it did. Not the best hair experience, but not the worst either. It was okay. Early November I came in for more highlights. I probably should have gone somewhere else since my first experience was only okay but I was hopeful this time would be better. My hair was still too dark from July and a fair amount of new growth had happened. I wanted to be highlighted blonde throughout. This time, she lifted my hair naturally through the root because she didn't want to damage my hair but it didn't lift very much and I couldn't see much of a change in my hair color after she finished. It still looked very dark through the top and sides and I continued to have what looked like an ombre not a full blonde highlight. I let it go. I tried to like it. But over the course of the month it bothered me more and more. This was not what I wanted. So, I came back a month later (first week in December) for more highlights throughout. I had tried to come the week earlier but had had a scheduling issue. I decided to get a mini partial highlight this time so I could increase the blonde highlights not knowing really knowing what that service was, but feeling like the $220 I spent the first time and $70 this time was plenty enough money to spend, not including tipping. I am sorry I left the salon without seeing my hair fully dry. Anita took pictures and a video of the top of my hair while it was still somewhat wet. It looked good on top/damp. But, then I went home and dried my hair and pulled it back and realized that when my hair looked like a blonde toupee because all of the blonde was right down the center of my head at a high density (and more highlights were put on one side of hair than the other). In addition there was a thick patch of blonde right in the front that was not blended in with a harsh line above the root. Also, the blondes were not toned to match each other. The blonde was warm at the top but the blonde at the bottom was still cool. I wanted a warm blonde highlight throughout. In general, Anita puts too many high/low lights in your hair so that you are either very light or too dark, and I think this is a technique problem. Also, Anita may do what you ask, but don't expect that she will be able to provide advice or direction about your hair. She didn't explain to me what a mini partial was, warn me that this was what it was going to look like (stripe of blonde down the middle), or explain that my hair was going to have two different blondes in it if I wanted to be warmer blonde. She should have said if you want to be blonde throughout (and we did look at a couple pictures) you need a pay for a full highlight, which would have been a repeat of the service I had earlier in the month. Had she said that, honestly, I probably would have walked out, and I think she knew that, so she took the money for the mini partial because it was an opportunity for her to make more money. I think instinctively she must have known the mini partial was not going to achieve the look I wanted, which is why I am angry and why I feel cheated and why I am writing this review now. Although Anita offered to add in a few more highlights for free and to put low lights where there is a patch of blonde at the top, instead, I asked for my money back on the recent service so that I could go somewhere else. She would not agree to do that, even though I now have to go get my hair fixed at another salon. When I add up the services as this other salon and Anita's salon I will have spent about $500 on my hair in about a month, not to mention, expending a fair amount of my personal time. I'm typically not one to spend a lot on haircuts. I saw the Groupon a few weeks ago for $25 for a wash, cut, and blow dry: a great deal! I went for it, and had my hair cut today with Suelen. Upon first impression, the salon is quiet and simple (I was the only customer there at the time), so I was a little apprehensive, but Suelen was excellent. I brought her a picture of what I was going for and she followed it exactly - my hair turned out great. She was very attentive and careful, and she took her time to do everything right. She didn't cut corners or rush through the appointment, which I appreciated. The woman at the front desk was also extremely sweet and welcoming. I will most likely return to Kaya for my next haircut - this is the third salon I've tried in the Cambridge/Somerville area in the past year and I enjoy their simple, no-frills environment and the absence of prissy, stuck-up employees. read more

It used to be that there really wasn't a place in Somerville that could be considered a "one-stop shop" for all things salon and spa related. Then Kaya Beauty Spa came along! I learned about Kaya when browsing the Spring/Summer issue of the Somerville Scout magazine. They were advertising a special Scout Deal of $30 for $50 worth of services. I had a wedding to attend at the time, so I figured it was the perfect opportunity to pamper myself and check out a new local business. My visit consisted of a pedicure, manicure, and facial. Anita--who also happens to be the owner--gave me a fabulous mani-pedi along with some great tips for at-home nail care remedies. She clearly knows her stuff and is invested in providing the best array and quality of services to her clients. My facial wasn't as relaxing as the mani-pedi, but that's mostly because there wasn't a way to dim the lighting in the room (they're new to the space, so they're still figuring out some kinks). The asthetician who gave me my facial seemed to still be learning her way around the salon's line of GlyMed Plus skin care products--she had to consult a big guide to decide on which products to use with me. But in the end the facial left my skin feeling super elastic and hydrated, and you can't ask for a better result than that. The prices are very reasonable, especially considering the kinds of high-end products they use. I'll definitely be going back to try an UltraSonic facial and get another mani-pedi! read more

I'm visiting for the month, and for personal reasons, this was the one day during my visit that I could get my hair cut. I don't have any local friends who get their hair cut in the area -- they're all school friends -- so I had to use Yelp instead of personal recommendations. I picked Kaya Beauty Spa because it was in our area -- near Union Square -- and open on a Sunday. I called the same day and made an appointment. I am really impressed and would definitely come here again. The salon is very quiet and peaceful. I wouldn't call it "no frills" so much as "minimalist." I henna my hair and sometimes salons are weird about that -- suggesting it's not good, or trying to say I shouldn't do it, etc. The person cutting my hair was knowledgeable about henna for hair, and made suggestions for me about that in the future. She also told me that she applies henna too, and that I could have it done there if I wanted. Although I was only having a cut and dry, she made thoughtful suggestions about my henna choices in the future, to better accommodate my changing hair. (I am going grey more and more.) I had a very soothing, comfortable, pleasant experience, got my hair cut exactly the way I wanted it, and felt listened to as a customer. Since my first review, I've gone back for an ultrasonic facial and a haircut. The facial left me looking and feeling great, but like other reviewers have pointed out, they don't dim the overhead lights which is a total mood and retina killer. The facial did the trick, but it wasn't super relaxing. Now for my haircut: Fantastic! Nicole did my haircut and it looks great! She's had over 5 years of experience and it shows. I have a cowlick in my bangs and she's the first person to show me a better way to blow dry them so they lay nicely. I went in with long kinda damaged hair with blah side bangs. I got a botanical treatment with a great scalp and shoulder massage. While I was under the blow dryer, Nicole gave me a great hand massage to help pass the time. I came in armed with pictures of what I wanted my hair to look like, and Nicole explained what would and would not work with my hair for the amount of time I was willing to put into it. (She reminded me that celebs and hair models had a team of stylists working to create that look...I have a blow dryer and a round brush and 15 minutes). As for the cut, I got a few inches off the bottom (4?) with some subtle layers, face framing pieces, and the coolest bangs I've ever had. It seems they're still working some logistical things out with the layout and running the business - the blow drier station isn't the right height for the chair that had to be brought in from the waiting area (kinda weird), but Nicole made it work without making it awkward. I'd definitely recommend Nicole to anyone looking for a stylist to maintain or revamp their look. I love my haircut! read more

Got the Yelp deal -- $35 for a $50 service. I used it to my advantage by getting a brazilian wax since it's normally $55. Normally I go to cheaper Asian nail salons for $35 but I wanted to see if there was a difference-- there definitely is. I feel like the service was less painful, more thorough, and more sanitary. Anita was also very pleasant throughout and took her time. As previous posts mentioned, the lighting in the room is rather bright but nothing to really complain about on my part. I came here because they had open appointments on a Sunday. I will be coming back because I am very happy with the haircut and the relaxed and quiet atmosphere. This place is pretty basic - no giant shop windows, no blaring pop music, no shiny glossy furniture, and that is very much fine by me. Anita did an excellent job cutting my "grown out" long hair into something shorter, flattering, and appropriate for my age. I'd never had a haircut start with a scalp and neck massage, but it really put me at ease! I also love the scent of the products she used, and the soft music, too. Love this place! Nicole is the best ! I've been going to the same hairdresser for over 8 years and was tired of driving so far. I went to Kaya and first got a wash and blow out just to see the place and check out their services and products. Talk about pleased! Been back 3 times. Nicole is not only a great hair stylist, she one of the best colorist I've ever worked with. She listens to what you want and helps you get exactly that. I was nervous about her cutting my bangs but she did just what I asked and trimmed them just enough so I can still tuck them behind my ear. My color and highlights came out great! I highly recommend ! I haven't tried the facials yet but I plan to on my next visit. If lighting is an issue, just speak up. They are eager to please and you should never go to a salon and not speak up for what you want or need. read more

This might have the single worst nail experience of my life. 1- can you wait 10 minutes, sure. Turned out to be 29 cuz at 30, I was leaving. They had me in this basement room that had no (it was eerily quiet) tv, didn't even fill up the pedi tub with water, the lights are GLARING, didn't check on me. When the woman finally came down, she cleaned the tub. Obviously the other woman couldn't have done that in the 30 minutes I spent with my new friends, the flies. The actual name job wasn't the bad, but they weren't out of this world either. It took almost 2 hours to do a mani/pedi. 2- time for the eyebrow waxing. First, those damn lights! I thought my retina would burn out. It took about 1/2 hour to do. 3- so I spent almost 3 hours in the brightest lit place for a mani/pedi and eyebrow waxing. The whole time, they were also trying to up sell stuff to me, being way too aggressive with having me commit to a return visit, etc. 4- and this is my fault, $85 bucks was the tab. $65 for a mani/pedi. Are you f@&$;ing kidding me? $20 for the eye brows. I should have asked, I know. I guess I assumed some small nail paces across from a high school would be in the range of what you see in Davis Square. The atmosphere of that place would make a $35 mani/pedi seem high. My advise, there are way too many places near by that are better, more relaxing, and less expensive. I went there about 3 weeks ago and I am STILL annoyed with this place. read more

Purchased a groupon and made an appt. I arrived late as there was zero parking in the area at the time I had booked. Was told upon arrival that they "don't do gel nails" and mine needed to be removed. Left bummed with no service. Tried again to redeem fast expiring coupon. After giving them my name I was informed "I had lost half my value of groupon because I was late last time." Seriously!?!? I can't begin to tell what the service is like as I have yet to receive anything from them yet but a hard time. Stay away. Don't waste your time or money. I've reached out to groupon to let them know how unhappy I am with this establishment. Hopefully, I will get my money back. Otherwise, I'm out $65 dollars. So this place seems to have great reviews for hair and facials/waxing, but I thought I'd give my review for my Mani/Pedi experience. First off I have to say the women who work there are very very nice and I hate to even say anything bad about the mani/pedi, but it just wasn't good. I got the Trubate for an Aveeda Spa Manicure and Pedicure. First I'm taken down to the basement where the nail area is. It's very bright and very very quiet. There are only 2 pedicure chairs and one tiny table for nails. No TV's, No windows, No hand or feet dryers! And no other people. The "spa" part was only that they used Aveeda hand and foot lotion, which was nice, but it wasn't a very "spa" like experience with the atmosphere. The girl was sweet doing my nails but her hand and foot massages were awful, she would just very very lightly touch your hands and feet, it was borderline making me uncomfortable. If a stranger is going to be giving me a massage they gotta put some power behind or it just feels creepy. The paint job wasn't so good either - chipped/peeled off the next day. The fact that there are no dryers is a big bummer. Because of that they spray the nail dryer stuff in a can directly on your nails immediately after they are done, which if they were trained properly they would know that this causes a white film on top of the nails that won't come off. it basically ruined both my fingers and toes. So I think the staff is very nice, but not properly trained or equipped for manicures and pedicures. I think this is the last of me testing out places with groupons and trubates, time to just spend the money and stick to my usual place that always does a good job. read more

I had the strangest experience at Kaya Beauty Spa so I admit I'm shocked to see so many positive reviews. Maybe I was there on a bad day. I stopped in to see if someone could clean up my hair for a wedding I was going to - i.e. not a haircut but just basically use clippers on the back of my neck. It should take no more than 5 minutes and is very easy to do. There were 3 women working there (and zero customers) and they seemed confused or hesitant despite my straightforward request and their lack of other customers. Maybe they don't have too many male customers. I don't know what the problem was. Fortunately I asked what they wanted to charge and they obviously had no idea. One of them suggested $20 so I declined and opted to leave. Then they tried $15 and we settled at $10 which still seemed high to me for 5 minutes of work and a presumed tip. The entire exchange was uncomfortable and awkward from the standpoint of the customer. I have another place I regularly get my hair cut and occasionally need a quick clean-up between cuts. Any other place I've been to has charged $5 or nothing, knowing I would tip for their time. I tried Kaya because it's local and convenient. I followed the stylist [?] to a back room which was silent and stuffy. There was no A/C despite it being over 90 degrees outside. She fumbled around for a few minutes trying to find scissors [!] which she uncovered in a box in the cabinet at my feet. Then she did the same for the clippers. It was very disorganized and I seriously wondered if I was their first customer. At this point I wished I had trusted my judgement and left sooner. After what seemed like an eternity she began tentatively running the clippers on my neck. It probably didn't help that they don't have proper clippers but she had absolutely no idea what she was doing. She "finished" and I asked to see it. It was uneven and she had barely trimmed it at all. I explained what I was looking for (again) and she resumed the tentative clipping. I looked at it in the mirror and it was slightly better so at that point I figured I'd just cut my losses and try to do it myself at home. She offered to trim the rest of my hair. Ha - no thanks. Then she offered a shampoo. Huh? I couldn't wait to get out of there and I pretty much ran out of the room, dropped $10 on the counter and didn't look back. The three women working there seemed nice enough, I guess, but customer service was not their strong point. Nor was cutting hair. My experience from start to finish was unprofessional, negative and awkward. I am surprised that anyone has had a successful haircut at Kaya as it didn't seem set up as a working salon when I was there. My friend and I got mani pedis with groupons, so the price was pretty affordable, though I don't know what their pricing is like normally. The ambiance left something to be desired, but the two women who performed our services did excellent jobs, and made us feel more comfortable than any nail technicians I've ever had. They use Aveda products and gave us complimentary Aveda tea, which was a big plus! Great conversation, great experience, but the salon itself could really use a makeover. This was by far the worst bikini wax I have ever expirienced! I get a brazilian wax done every couple months and I was new to the area so I tried this place. Terrible decision. The woman took over an hour going over the same spots over and over it was excruciating. And after all that- there was still some stragglers she left behind! Went back on Friday for a haircut, keratin blowout and mani/pedi. Started off with the Mani/Pedi. People this is not your corner nail salon, it's not loud, its not super busy and it's not fast paced. This is a spa, you come here for the relaxing experience and quality services. The lady that did my manicure and pedicure was professional and did a great job. I do think that maybe they could use something a little more pleasing to the eye than that very bright tapestry they have hanging or even maybe a TV since it is very small down there. The stylist that did my cut and keratin treatment was very sweet and as young as she was she was very professional and she did a great job. I was unsure of the keratin blowout because I really thought it would straighten my curls but what it did was loosen them and make my hair very shiny and soft and so much easier to straighten. Not sure if I would do it again for the price. Maybe I will just save up for a Japanese or Brazilian straightening. I will be back for a cut and definitely get my eyebrows threaded there. Anita is amazing!! The mani/pedi was pricey so it would probably have to wait for another special occasion. This is a great new spa/hair salon in a convenient location. Their space is small, but I have not had trouble getting an appointment. Nicole did a great job on my highlights and cut, and she really listens to what you ask for. Anita threaded my eyebrows and they turned out great! I have to say that the atmosphere is a little disconcerting as it's a very small salon (read: two stylists' chairs) with a family-run feel, but the services I received were very satisfying. I had a wonderful experience at Kaya Beauty Salon. I was lucky enough to get my hair washed cut and dried by the owner (didn't know that until the end) and it turned out great. She listened to what I wanted and TOOK HER TIME. I never for a second felt rushed and it seemed like she really wanted to make me happy. The other women there were all equally as nice, welcoming, and easy to talk to. My only suggestion would be related to sales. Have had two *great* mani/pedis from Anita, the owner of this salon. The best looking & longest lasting ever. I even like the atmosphere, free from TV, radio, and the salon's taste in music which may or may not match your own. Though I agree with other reviewers that it could use some interior touch ups (better paint, carpet, lighting). Delicious complimentary Aveda tea, too. (who knew Aveda made tea, not just beauty products?). I also love that the owner is an immigrant - followed her husband here - then took a chance to go into business for herself. I really admire her character and am glad to support that. My only "complaints" are she charges more for a mani/pedi than most nail salons ($50 whereas most charge $35). At least, to her credit, she does a better job than most. Also very unclear what the difference is between a regular and "spa" mani/pedi. She does not do paraffin waxes (the usual difference) so you'll have to ask what the difference is. I got an hour long facial, and it was decent, but for the price point I was disappointed. My technician didn't completely extract all of my blackheads, despite my asking her to, which made my skin worse not only immediately following the facial but for weeks after. I was also not informed of the price over the phone, and was a bit surprised when paying. To be fair, I should have asked for clarification, but I would also encourage ownership to be transparent and disclose this information when booking. Overall, I wish I had gone elsewhere. read more

I've been to Kaya twice and couldn't be happier. I have been trying to clear up my acne for forever. The first time I did the acne facial and I felt that a lot of oil and dirt was removed from my face and my pores were more open. Now this is a month later and I went for a second time to do a dermasound facial. Anita is extremely friendly and knowledgeable, I feel like it's worth the money to go here. I had a pedicure, botanical hair treatment, and haircut done with Anita. I had a wonderful experience. She asked me questions the entire time about how I wanted things done, and then actually did them that way. I was relaxed and felt pampered. Also, my hair and nails came out great. I found out about this place a few months ago and have been giving every aspect a try. First I got a mani/pedi and in which they took they're time and I didn't feel rushed. It came out nicely and felt great! The next service I tried was a hair cut. I just got a basic trim but I love the head and neck massage I got with it! Then I tried a facial. I never had a facial before so I don't know what to compare it to but it did feel nice. Lastly I've made this spot my new place to get my eye brows waxed. I always walk away with them looking sharp and clean. Overall I have no complaints about Kaya Spa and would definitely recommend giving it a try! read more
