This was such an amazing experience! The young college-age man who was our guide (Caleb maybe?) did such an excellent job keeping us safe, being encouraging, being patient and calm. We had the most incredible manatee experience that we will never forget. And it was quite an incredible adventure, definitely pushed us out of our comfort zone but we did it and had fun (mostly! If you don't know what to do at Ft. Myers other than the beach, I highly recommend checking out Kayak Excursion! You will get to experience the nature side of Florida Gulf Coast, plus you will get to see floras and faunas in their coastal habitat. Hailey was my tour guide, and she was so sweet, very accommodating, and very knowledgeable with local habitats and explaining why these are so important to us. Just few tips for anyone that is planning to kayak or paddleboard through mangrove tunnels: - I would check with the staff on tide level, because some trails aren't easily accessible when there is a low tide. - Bring sunscreen! Florida UV index is no joke, especially if you're from more northern states. - If you're a bug magnet, like me with Type O blood, bring a bug spray! There are mosquitoes when you're going through mangrove tunnels. - Bring water or electrolytes to stay hydrated. About 2/3 of the tour you will paddle through open water. - Bring a spare set of clothes and towel. You will get wet. read more

It's an opportunity to spend time on the water, get some exercise, view some interesting ecological areas, and even perhaps see some manatees...how can you go wrong? You can't! Reservations can be made on site or on line. The first time we just showed up and it took no more than 10 minutes to fill out all the "paperwork", including a waiver. The second time I completed the reservations and necessary paperwork on line. It's $40.00 per person per kayak for 3 hours. Bookings can be made as early as 9am or as late as 2pm. They give you a map of the surrounding area showing the routes through the mangroves, into the bay, and ultimately the return to base. They help you with your life vest, assist you getting into your kayak, and with a push-off, you're on your way. This is Fun with a capital "F". First, if you haven't been kayaking in a while, you need to get used to the whole right-left arm over arm paddling coordination thing. When done properly, it's pretty effortlessly and efficient and dry - you'll get the hang of it in no time. Second, the next thing (I noticed) is how quiet and calm everything is. When you start moving through the mangroves the limbs are like a canopy and you can just glide along studying the interesting habitat and enjoying the quiet solitude. At one point we came out of the mangroves and paddled along the backside of some nice homes built along this waterway canal. While making our way to the open bay, there were two manatees that swam directly under our kayaks. It looked like a mother manatee and her baby calf. Pretty cool! Out in the open bay, you can see Fort Myers Beach Causeway on Port side and Sanibel Causeway on the starboard side. It's about a 30 minute strong paddle adjacent and along Bunche Beach from there to the launch site - or longer for a more leisurely ride. Things to consider: You're bound to get wet so dress accordingly; Wear an old pair of running shoes or sneakers - something you don't mind getting wet and sandy; Also, make sure any valuables, billfolds, snacks, extra clothing, etc.. are packed in water tight bags (quart and gallon ziplock freezer bags work great) just in case. Check the tide schedules because when the tide is out, the trip through the canopied mangrove is impassable; Finally, bring sunscreen and some water. We had a great time. The staff, equipment, and scenic route made for a great experience. I highly recommend you check them out! read more

We did a 4 hour tour recently. While most of the trip was good, we got into trouble getting through the mangrove tunnel. To be fair it was low tide, however, the path was extremely narrow, barely a kayak width. We also made a couple wrong turns and had to double back. There were 2 double kayaks ahead of us and we heard they tipped over in tunnel, as double is less stable than single. For future, we have 2 suggestions to improve the experience: 1- Widen path thru mangrove tunnel at least to kayak width 2-Place ribbons along route to guide for kayakers The checkin and return was easy. We thoroughly enjoyed our kayaking adventure! The mangrove tunnel was one of the coolest places I've ever seen and Bunche beach was beautiful. Kayaking on the ocean was both beautiful and relaxing, but also quite exerting! It was a good workout being the sole paddler for me and my 10 year old! Emily was so friendly, engaging, and informative! She was highly knowledgeable of the plant and animal life! She was kind enough to take several photos of us in the tunnel which we can't wait to see! After a flip flop losing snafu on our way out in the kayaks (apparently I'm the only person they have ever seen tip a kayak!), Caleb threw in a net three times in search of my lost flip flop while we went on our trip. The mangrove "tunnels" were so overgrown, it was near impossible to get through. In fact, we tried to get to the end of 2 of them but after being scratched and nearly gouged many times, we gave up and turned around, which gave us the same horrible experience as going in, of course! If you are fine with kayaking out in the gulf, I think that would be the best option. That is not an option for us though (too challenging). Also, the mandatory minimum 3 hr. is not ideal, as we are generally 2 hr. paddlers. One other turn-off, the man that checked us in, has his pants hanging VERY low in back....showing off his very fat ............ read more

Love the tour, not so much the tour guide. First time so nothing to compare but... the group I was with was not impressed. Jessie tour guide didn't keep the group together. I stayed up with him but it wasn't easy, so I heard his speech but that wasn't much. I saw 2 dolphins but there was only a couple kayakers that heard him. What a perfect outdoor activity for a summer morning in Florida! This kayak excursion was well organized, and we are glad we chose the guided tour option. Our guide, Vanessa, was very knowledgeable and kept us moving through the different segments with enough stops to relax and learn. It was nice to be in a group of 12 because the other folks had varied skills, that made for a great conversation and good tips. Good quality equipment and the instruction was helpful for us as beginners - we have kayaked twice before. Would highly recommend the singles or tandem option for the guided tour. Great location and service. Their equipment was clean and in good shape. With the kayak rentals, they also provided life jackets, a waterproof bag, and a small map. Roger was pleasant and competent. We spent three hours kayaking in the canals and got to see manatees. (If you are fortunate enough to see them, do not touch or harass them, as it is illegal.) Later on, we continued and ended up at the beach, returning to the landing site by going right. It was an excellent outing. We are definitely doing this again. Fantastic experience! Emily was a great guide, giving us confidence to make it through the bay part of our path. It had a lot more waves than we expected! When we passed the beach and made it to the canal it was smooth, easy kayaking. Saw several birds, a few fish that jumped and a hundred or so of the little black crabs. Definitely wouldn't want to go through a mangrove tunnel without a guide. Emily helped out with pointers along the way, that it was ok to push off the trees and roots. The tide was high so we had to duck under a few branches but I'd take that over being stuck on some roots! Didn't see any dolphins or manatees but still a great experience. We had a great time. We opted for 2 double kayaks, which was great for both steering and endurance (i.e. I could rest while my daughter paddled away). The 2.5-3 hour tour took us through a Mangrove into an open area where we saw a dolphin. We rested and ate snacks on the beach. Mike was our guide and he was terrific! The tour recommends bringing something to drink and a snack. I was very glad I did because I used both. I probably should have worn more bug spray to keep the no-see-ums away. It was a great workout, a great day in the sun and a fun family experience. I will definitely be back to go with them again. read more

Staff was very nice. Make sure you fill out your release form online ahead of time so you don't have to do it on the spot though. Also we were done with the mapped out route an hour early as we didn't know how to pace ourselves and were worried about running out of time. Just take your time. This is a great place to go for a few hours to explore the mangroves. It's best to go during mid tide or high tide but not Lowtide. The scenery was nice and the staff was a bit deceptive. The advertisement for half day was really only three hours which I didn't find out until after the trip was over, costing me an additional $15. To add insult to the injury the staff guy gave me a hard time about it like it was a big deal that he had to wait 30 minutes for me when he wasn't even closed yet. If it weren't for that I would've rated this place four stars. It's a lot of fun read more

Fantastic tour! Got us talked up, geared up, and on the water quickly. Good 2 3/4 hrs of 3 hr tour out on water. From starting out in back channels to out into the open bay waters, paddling went from nice and easy to a good little workout in the waves. Vanessa took some time to point out and explain different ecological points of interest and highlights of the local ecosystem. Even ran into a pod of dolphins! This was a fantastic tour which is a steal for the price ($55/per person for a 3 hour tour)! My boyfriend and I went on a morning tour on an overcast day and we were the only people for the tour. I thought hanging with just a tour guide for that long might be awkward, but that was not the case at all. Shawn (I think), our guide was EXTREMELY knowledgeable and personable. He was flexible and gave us options throughout the tour, so the tour was customized to our preferences. He pointed out all of the wildlife and worked really hard to show us manatees. The tour itself was wonderful and diverse: paddling through mangrove tunnels, channels, and out in the bay... A little bit of everything. My favorite part was paddling through the mangrove tunnels. I am not an experienced kayaker, so I fumbled through the twists and turns, but it was still a lot of fun and not stressful. A must do activity if you are in the area! read more

This is great for beginner or moderate kayakers, will take about 3 hours! The pace is very moderate with great views of wild life and vegetation. Fun route through the Mangroves and then into the open bay where you can see Manatees, Dolphins, Sharks, variety of birds and crab species. We saw a manatee and dolphin from afar, which was cool. My family went here while we were on vacation and it was a wonderful experience. Our instructor pointed out different types of birds, Dolphins, and many other animals. It was our first time kayaking and by the end we were totally pros!! You go through the mangroves and out into the bay. You take a 10-15 min. break to eat or look at seashells by the shore. Went kayaking for a second time and enjoyed it very much. This rental location has only been open for 4 or 5 years and it seems to be doing a good business. If you enjoy bird watching, I've seen a nice variety of wading birds plus an active osprey nest close to shore. The far end of Plover Beach is especially nice.
