It was this experience that made me fall in love with Kauai. It was easy to find, we were greeted shortly after we arrived, warm and welcoming, we were issued our gear, and it was made clear what we could experience during the day. Kayaking on the river was absolutely beautiful. We saw a couple of sea turtles, got a lesson on the history of the island, docked at the beach for some snorkeling which was super fun and our guide played the ukulele and sang over lunch on the beach. You will not be disappointed! Kayak Hanalei offered a really fun, physical, beautiful and informative experience- our tour guide was Kolo. I was a bit skeptical at first because I've never been kayaking but it turned out to be soooo much fun! We kayaked down the Hanalei river which takes a LOT of teamwork and patience with the person you share a boat with. So pick wisely! Lol The Halanei river leads us to the beach where we kayak into the ocean against the wave to get to the shore of the beach for us to snorkel. Once out snorkeling we saw so many fish! We also saw a baby sea turtle and we're also lucky enough to have a monk seal swim to the shore. After snorkeling, sandwiches, chips and drink were provided. Our tour guide Kolo was extremely kind and informative of the island, fish and he also performed a few songs on his ukulele- he picked a coconut and a fresh papaya for us and cut it up to enjoy. A true Hawaiian experience. It's quite a physical activity but a lot of fun. You will be a bit tired the next day. read more

Our first snorkeling adventure on the island (different company) didn't go very well, so we were a little bit worried about this one going in. But it turned out to be a great experience. The right level of instruction starting out, then a nice easy beginning in the nice calm river. That gave us a great chance to get our balance, and get used to the kayak. We went nice and easy to about halfway down the river, when we stopped and our guide gave us a history lesson, and pointed out the surrounding land features. Kolo was AWESOME. He is very knowledgeable, very pleasant, and has a great laugh! In the end, he was the star of the trip. On down the river, we were a bit concerned when we reached the end and you could see white caps and rolling waves in Hanalei Bay. But Kolo gave us guidance on how to get through it, and pointed out that we were taking a right turn out of the river mouth, and going along the shore. It was definitely rougher than we expected, but we did just fine taking our time. Snorkeling was good, although the water was a bit hard to see through. But we saw a lot of fish, and maybe a half dozen turtles....close up! Be aware of where the sandy areas are, to help you try to stay away from the shallow reef areas. We did end up with a couple minor scrapes & cuts. Lunch after snorkeling was better than expected. The turkey sandwich is a serious deli sandwich! And Kolo added to the experience by scavenging a couple papaya and coconuts to add to lunch. And lest we not forget, playing the ukulele and singing a couple songs for us. The guy does it all and made the trip entirely enjoyable! Highly recommend this one. read more

Heute wollten wir (mein Mann und ich) eine Tagestour machen - wegen der Unfreundlichkeit des Personals haben wir das nicht getan und sind woanders hin. Was ist geschehen; wir sind Touristen aus Europa, fahren weltweit Kayak, sprechen einigermaßen English, ältere Menschen - und - dies habe ich 2 x deutlich gemacht, leider schwerhörig. Vor zwei Tagen war ich da, um alle Informationen zu klären, so auch den Preis. Meine Frage - sind dies alle Kosten (75 $) - Antwort; ja / weitere Frage; kommt da nichts mehr dazu? Antwort; Nein, das ist der Preis. Als ich dann heute angekommen bin, sagte man mir, dass ich nun noch Tax zahlen müsste. Eine für uns in Europa unbekannte Praxis - auch deshalb hatte ich ja vor 2 Tagen gefragt. Ich verstand heute nicht sofort, wie viel $ das ist, und bat darum, dass man mir das notiert. Sowohl bei meinem Besuch vor zwei Tagen als auch jetzt war die junge Frau sehr schnippisch und genervt, rollte die Augen. Weitere Frage von mir; wo kann man die Privatsachen einschließen - Antwort; kostet XX ?? $ (habe ich akustisch leider nicht verstanden...), aber ich kann einen Wasserschutzbeutel mieten, das ist billiger, meinte sie als Tipp. Jung dachte ich ... ihr fehlt noch Geduld und Empathie mit älteren und Ausländern umzugehen. Sie gab dann genervt ab, ich fragte ihr zu viel, und eine ältere Dame kam und ich bat nochmals, den Preis aufzuschreiben. Ich erklärte, dass ich das (die Zahl) nicht verstehe und sie sagte; ich weiß nicht, warum ich Ihnen das jetzt aufschreiben soll und was das für eine Rolle spielt. Abgesehen davon, dass ich Kundin bin, und so kann es der Dame sehr egal sein, welche Rolle das für mich spielt. Ich habe ihr dennoch geantwortet: Weil wir nicht reich sind [ich muss kalkuieren, wie wir das machen und habe überlegt, ob wir dann nicht den ganzen Tag, sondern nur eine Stunde fahren, weil das billiger ist]. Sie knallte mir unwillig den Zettel auf den Tisch und sagte unfreundlich; kommen Sie zurück, wenn Sie sich entschieden haben. Meine Antwort; Ich glaube, ich komme nicht mehr zurück. Wie gesagt, wir sind weltweit unterwegs und fahren gerne Kayak - so unfreundlich und servicefern sind wir noch nie behandelt worden. Auch der Umgang mit jemand, der schlecht hört ist ohne Empathie für den Kunden. Auch finden wir es sehr ungewöhnlich (weltweit vergleichend), dass wir den Schutzsack bzw die Box für die Wertsachen bezahlen müssen. Ich hatte zudem 2 Tage vorher gefragt ... keine Nennung dieser Preise. So kann ich sagen - viele, viele verschiedene Aspekte lassen mich von diesem Verleih abraten. Wenn man die Menschen nicht liebt und nicht mit Touristen arbeiten möchte, dann soll man es lassen! Ich habe hir die Bewertungen gelesen und stelle fest - die Unhöflichkeit und Serviceferne haben noch andere bemerkt. Rented kayaks and took them out ourselves- a very easy experience. They recommended to go upstream to the refuge, but it seems like that goes along the highway for a good bit, so we turned around after 15 minutes and headed down to the beach. A LOVELY way to spend an afternoon- you could go up and down the river if you wanted, but usually for me an hour or so of paddling is enough for this once a year kayaker. Kolo took us on a short hike woth beautiful views before taking us to our snorkeling spot. We saw some colorful fish and some very friendly sea turtles! I can't speak for the tour, but this is prob one of my favorite places to SUP/kayak. We've done this on every island in Hawaii and all over San Diego and SoCal for over 15 years together and many times with our small daughter. We did a tandem kayak Kai with her dad and me on the SUP this time. We went up the river and she did great. Last time we were on this river, I was pregnant and hubby and I kayaked to the ocean and docked on po'o pua. Will try the tour that goes to Hideaway beach next time. We had the most amazing time with Kolo and Kailoa as our guides as we paddled the beautiful Hanalei River. From the first moment of booking until we were back in our car after our adventure, everyone was awesome! Kolo is a spectacular guide, sharing history, lore, and lots of laughter. Even the waves were super fun as we headed to the beach to snorkel. The water was a little cloudy but that didn't prevent us from seeing our honu and beautiful fish. Paddle boarding down the river to Hanalei Bay was one of my favorite things I did while in Kuai. My friend and I SUP often back in San Diego, but I would definitely say you don't need any SUP experience to enjoy this. We popped in on a Thursday around 1, and got the "afternoon special" which was $5 off their already very reasonable price of $50/day. We were handed life jackets and then offered some assistance to launch off their dock around back. You launch directly into this very serene river, surrounded by all the beautiful greenery Kuai has to offer. You can paddle north or south on the river, we went south, which took us to Hanalei Bay, just like they said it took about 30 minutes to get there. That's with lots of stops for pictures and to wave to all the seat turtles we saw along the way. When you get to the Bay, you can pull your board up on the beach (without having to go out into the open Bay if you don't want to). We then spent a while hanging out on the beach (I recommend packing snacks, towels etc to hang out and enjoy your time! You can rent a dry bag if you need one!). We then paddled back, took about the 45 minutes they said it would, and we were helped back onto shore. Everyone was super friendly, and helpful if you need any SUP tips etc. read more

Kolo and Gabe made my wife and I relish the morning full of refreshing rain on the paddle out. My husband & I chose Kayak Hanalei because they were responsive to my emailed question and the website peaked my interest. We were initially scheduled for a Monday but it had rained heavily the day before and we were able to move our reservation to Wednesday. They stated the river levels had risen and they want to make sure everyone is safe - Thank you for that!! Check-in was easy. We met our guide, Kolo, who was amazing, helpful, informative, & so nice. It was our first time kayaking so we were nervous. Before we started, we got a quick tutorial on what to do which was helpful. We got our snorkel gear, life vest, and dry bags and were ready to go. There were 11 people in our group. The dock staff helped get us in the water. We were a bit rough starting out trying to figure out which way to paddle and ending up in the bushes a few times, lol. We eventually got the hang of it though. We paddled down the river, paused a while for Kauai history from Kolo, and then paddled towards the bay/ocean. There were some amazing views along the way. We were nervous during the ocean paddling portion but Kolo kept us informed on which way to go. We finally got to Hideaway Beach to snorkel. Snorkeling was great - Kolo even found an octopus to show us and we saw plenty of fish there as well. We ate our lunch there on the beach which was very good (huge turkey sandwich, chips, cookies, juice/water). We did a little more snorkeling after eating and then headed back down the river. We had an awesome time. Hopefully Kolo is your guide if you decide to do this tour!! It's definitely worth it. read more

We lived on Kauai for a while and have been visiting every year just about for the last 20. We always make it a point to rent some kayaks from Kayak Hanalei and either cruise up river to the preserve or out to Hanalei Bay. It's so peaceful and beautiful. Kayaks are nice, crew is always great and they have a perfect location. I would strongly recommend it the river is pretty slow moving so it's not overly strenuous to go up stream. My friends and I went yesterday to make reservations for my friends birthday the today, we were told by the gentleman at the doc we did not need to as it was the slow season and to just be there the next day at 8am. We showed up at 7:40 and went to check in and were told we didn't have reservations and wouldn't be able to take the kayak tour by the manager. We explained what we had been told and she didn't care. I went to find the owner and was told to speak to his wife Goldie as he hasn't been around. Turns out Goldie's was in the office and was available to intercede and did not. No apology for their staff giving us false info, no offer to come back at another time, just turned her back on us with a "too bad" attitude! So rude!! Luckily we were able to book at the another place for my friends birthday! Not the one we wanted to do but wouldn't spend a dime with them. What a fantastic experience! The company was so easy to work with from booking onward- they accommodated our five person booking as well as food allergies. A perfect mix of kayaking while also snorkeling and just enjoying the sunshine. The extra touches of ukulele songs on the beach and eating a fresh coconut topped off our experience. On a more serious note, there was one older man who was in the group with us who needed assistance with kayaking and at one point even needed to be rescued from the water and the guides were so incredibly attentive and supportive I felt entirely safe. Our guide, "K" was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, and focused on providing cultural context for the natural beauty we experienced. With a large group and people with varying levels of competence, the tour doesn't move quickly. This is a great, leisurely paced trip, especially well suited to families. When we got to the snorkel location, we were lucky to find several turtles (pointed out by our guide!) that were not phased by our presence and let us observe them. Our great guide climbed a tree, cracked two fresh coconuts, taught is Hawaiian words, had a charming sense of humor that brought our little group of strangers together as Ohana. I've never Kayaked before, but I have to say this experience was wonderful . Kayak Hanalei is right up against the Hanalei river, so launching and parking is easy. Pro Tip- don't bring your backpack. Use their waterproof bags they provide. You will use them! Staff is friendly. They help launch you and bring you in. You can go upriver to the bridge or past that, or in the other direction to the ocean rivermouth. Just beautiful and calm. I would absolutely do this again! read more

Was sooooo excited to kayak! List of options said DAILY RENTAL. I am with my awesome and active 75 year old mother. A friend suggested I come here because apparently you have a daily rental for the kayak. My mom can kayak for probably 90 minutes or so and then she'd have to rest an hour and can do it again. This is why I was so intrigued and excited about the daily rental. Meaning, all day from 8:30 to 5pm like the guy at the counter said. Turns out as soon as you bring it back to dock it temporary Lee while you eat, or rest before going back onto the river in either direction, the rental and the "day" is over. I asked for clarification, and young guy said it's really just 2-3 hours. So I said, "oh, so it's not a daily rate for use from 8:30-5?" So, there's nowhere to stop the kayak on the river. So you can't go, kayak, return it, come back later anymore-- but you're still paying $70 for a "DAY RATE". I kindly suggested they change the listing to and hourly rate of a 3-4 hour rate and other guy snapped at me-- "daily rate is up for k terpretwion so you can interpret it however you want" they were rude I'm justifiably. I wasn't challenging them, I was asking for clarification because I very much wanted to take my mother on a kayak ride and there's no chance she could do three straight hours. GROSS. I booked the 8:30am to 1pm tour on their website and it was completely easy. The tour included: kayaks, water proof bags, snorkel gear and lunch. The place to register the day off is tiny so you might miss it. Good to get there early so you can find the right parking lot. We got there a little before 8am and signed our waivers. Then it was off to get our waterproof bags and snorkeling gear. Our tour guide was Kolo and he was such a cool laid back dude. We waited for everyone to get there and get their gear. They also have restrooms and changing rooms. Don't forget your swimsuit!!!!!!! Things that are important to bring on the kayak: phone to take pictures, water bottle with water, hat for the hot sun, sunglasses, tip money(optional) and sandals because your feet might get wet. We began by getting a quick lesson on how to handle our paddles. It's important so pay attention!!!! :) Then we got our life vest and the crew helped us get our kayaks in the water. Paddling up the river was easy at the beginning, but pace yourself because there is a lot of adventure to come! Kolo made us pause in the middle of the river trip and talked about the mountains and their significance. He was really passionate about the history behind their names and their ecology. It was a good lesson on some of the culture surrounding the area. Then we headed off to the ocean!!!! =-O The ocean was a little rocky but nobody capsized. By the way Kolo knew what you do is you fell out, so he was our lifeguard extraordinaire. We made it to our little beach and Kolo helped us out to the shore, one by one. Snorkeling time!!!! Kolo helped us apply defogger to our mask and laid out the rules of the land. He kept an eye on us and we had about 45min to snorkel. I decided to take a break because you have to paddle back!!! Lunch was at the same snorkeling beach and Kolo brought all the stuff for lunch. They made deli veggie and turkey sandwiches for us and they were so yummy (especially after such a workout!), we had bagged chips and guava juice/water. For dessert...cookies. Kolo serenaded our group with ukelele melodies and it set the mood to such a great day!! After lunch he collected our trash (remember, leave nothing but footprints!) and we had about 20 minutes to rest up and pack up. The kayak ride back was definitely harder after such a relaxing day, so pace yourself. I had to be towed a little by Kolo because I was running out of steam, but that was because I totally overdid it at the beginning. Would I do this again? YES YES YES! The experience was one of a kind and I completely recommend it. It is family friendly but I would suggest for a little older kids, our 8 year old really enjoyed it.
