This really gave me a sense of community in this seaside village. The people making a living off the ocean are also invested in its conservation. Other information shared during our adventure also supported this. We didn't want the tour to end and I highly recommend this experience to anyone traveling through the area!!

Also, they give you exactly what is needed to paddle in Trinidad so you remain warm & comfy. I was so impressed with our guides, Nick and Alex, and their local knowledge of seabirds, marine mammals, and intertidal species. Whales are cool, but there are also a lot of other really cool animals & birds in Trinidad Bay. And these guides know just where to take you. They were not afraid to take us into a little rougher waters, when we asked them to, likely because they are so skilled and experienced. I also really appreciated all of the paddling guidance they provided making sure I was using my core/legs more than my arms. I was with a very large group and the guides handled everything with such class and professionalism. It is a step above any outfitter I've ever paddled with. We are really lucky to have them in Trinidad to help us access some of the most fantastic coastline along the California coast. They also do a great job interpreting the California Coastal National Monument! All of those rocks and islands are part of a statewide national monument that runs from the Oregon border south to Mexico! Wow! What a treasure. He was incredibly helpful- not only did he recommend a specific spoon spinner, but he even took the time to show me the best way to cast and retrieve it for the river. This place is definitely a local gem. Whether you're a regular or you're like me and somehow managed to leave your tackle box at home, it's a great spot to drop by. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing, mainly due to poor planning by the staff. We booked for four people on a Thursday - my wife, myself, and our two teens (14 and 16)--with the expectation that we'd have two boats, which is standard for this group size. However, the team miscounted the boats that morning. When we pointed this out, instead of fixing the mistake, they pulled us aside and crammed all four of us into a boat intended for three, squeezing in an extra seat to make it "fit." Visibly frustrated, the team promised to speak with the owner and make it right (it was two high schoolers running it that day). I didn't argue and wanted to at least try to have a good time and not be that Dad. The result on the boat? A very cramped and uncomfortable setup that made the inflatable much harder to steer and navigate--especially on a 9-mile river trip. This wasn't the experience we paid for or expected based on our prior trips. The staff seemed more focused on moving us along rather than making it right. Still haven't heard from the owner. We'll likely explore other options next time around. Disappointed to see the service slip like this.

Nice place to come for the first time visitor to Fort Bragg…read more My wife, her mom, and I came to visit Fort Bragg (named after the same person that the more famous Fort Bragg in North Carolina is named after) on our way down from redwood forest parks to spend the night in San Francisco. One of the more famous tourist attractions in the area is Glass Beach, so named for the once plentiful sea glass that dotted the shoreline. It was stop number 12 (14:01) on day 5 of our road trip. It is located in Noyo Headlands Park, where there was plentiful parking, even later in the afternoon. The glass originated from a city dump that operated until 1967. There wasn't much left. Thus most colors of the glass pebbles were the common green, brown, and clear color of beer (and soda) bottles. To get down to the area where the glass accumulates, requires going down a non-paved hill from the bluff, so wasn't possible for Mom. We did get some good pictures of the area. And there was a cool carved piece of driftwood, resembling a whale near the benches where we sat, admiring the scenery.

Make sure to wear comfortable clothes, great walking shoes, light sweater, plenty of water, snacks and of course sun screen. the scenic, trails, pathways, are breathtaking . Even thought Carmel, Cambrian and sand dollar are my favorite places in Northern Ca. It doesn't matter if you like trails or 60 degree weather these are the places to visit. Big Sur, DelMonte,Morro Bay , half moon bay, anything by the northern peninsula or above the peninsula, I totally recommend. I will assure you that you'll enjoy the scenes, the trails, the resting benches, the weather, and sunsets. Be adventurous and travel one of the most beautiful highways in California "highway 1."

On this trip, I made it down to the beach and was rewarded with a few sea glass finds, moody coastal views and a new perspective of the park. After looping along the coastal bluff trail, there's an obvious path down to the beach that's not too steep. If you're up for a longer hike, there's the Ecological Staircase trail. I've not done that hike, yet, but seems like it could be an interesting adventure. Since my last visit, I've noticed improvements on the trail and better signage. It's free to park and a great stop to stretch your legs along the Mendocino coast. Spring brings lots of wildflowers, so it's a great walk, even on rainy moody days. Always a must stop when I'm in the area.

Since I was here last, they've created some raised decomposed granite trails. These raised, packed trails look like they would be conducive for use by strollers, walkers and wheelchairs. It's a beautiful addition to these grounds. There is a decent sized parking lot, portable toilets, clear signage. The grounds and trails are clean, the beach was prestige. Kudos for the new trails.

So for all of you out there that are wanting a nice, serene hike/more of a walk and listen up! First, you're going to want to locate the Beachcomber motel (the green one). The , you're going to want to go one parking lot north of that. On your left side as you're heading north you will see a small parking lot. This is where you want to park. On another note, there is access to that pedestrian bridge through a residential area that is south of the motel. You'll have to map it because we did not come this way and I cannot advise you on how to get here. Lol. There are so many opportunities to walk along the ridge as well as paved areas that share space with all of the coastline motels. Your options are vast and you could easily get a 3 to 4 mile walk/run in this area. I'm actually not sure how much further down it goes because the pup and I got tired. Lol . If you're walking along the ridge, consider wearing pants. I don't recommend tights because there are a lot of branches and bushes that stick out on the dirt trails. Wearing some windbreakers or sweatpants is likely your better option. There are breathtaking views from anywhere you go along the coastline. Either from the paved road or from the dirt paths. I do recommend clothed toed shoes if you are going off the paved path. There are some parts where the sand is loose and other parts where is completely rock. This is where I wish I would've had my hiking boots on, but my running shoes held up just fine. As you get further from what we'll call motel row, it gets quieter and more serene. More importantly, there's less foot traffic and bike traffic. It is very congested by the bridge itself, both on the bridge and below on the beach. This seems to be one of the longest areas in Fort Bragg to walk or ride your bike. There are some cooler places south of Fort Bragg in Mendocino that are also worth exploring. ***PSA*** This is a special announcement for all you doggy owners. Please don't be that person that does not bring poop bags. Your dog is almost guaranteed to shit on that bridge and we witnessed it TWICE. Once from a very large dog, whose poop was kicked around. As well as a smaller dog, who had the case of the runs. Neither of those situations are flattering. If anything, they are embarrassing... for YOU. Forgot to add that parking is free and there is a restroom (use at your own risk).

If these views could talk, they'd literally be screaming. That's what I was doing deep down inside…read moreas I walked along this scenic coastal trail. Those views are simply breathtaking. You can easily spend your entire day here and never get bored. This trail goes on for miles on end right alongside the beautiful Mendocino coastline. The official parking lot is the one right across from Glass Beach, but there are actually several different access points to this trail. I started my hike from Mackerricher State Park and continued down until I reached Glass Beach. There's a paved pathway (also known as Haul Road) which runs along the coast and is great for a nice leisurely stroll. People with strollers and wheel chairs can easily navigate this paved path. And then, there's the actual coastal dirt path that literally hugs the coastline. This is the path I spent the most time on. You'll pass by tons of secluded pocket beaches and the most gorgeous tide pools along the dirt path. There's also a few up and downs, making this path a bit more adventurous than the flat paved one next to it. Access to the beaches down below are super easy from the trail minus the little bit of scrambling needed to actually get down there. You'll be hit with beautiful coastal views from every angle. It's pretty addictive actually. And the best part is that there are so many amazing little stop-offs along the way, many of them being super secluded. I was able to enjoy a few spots where I practically had the beach and the tide pools all to myself. Many people were wearing masks but a lot of people weren't. The good thing is, both paths are really easy to social distance on. If you're looking for a a beautiful place to hike or to take a leisurely stroll along the coastline, the Fort Bragg Coastal Trail is the one.

The entrance is off Highway 1, just outside Mendocino's shopping district and headlands. There are big wide beaches where the river meets the ocean which are visible right away. However, if you make a left at the bottom of the hill and drive a short ways to the end of the lot, there's a wonderful trail that meanders alongside the river. This former logging road is wide and gently graded (at least for the first 2.5 miles I walked on it.) It's great for bikes and more casual "hikes." It goes, I believe, about 7 miles inland so you can go as far as you'd like and turn around. It's a mellow journey and one more about the sites and sounds along the trail and the general peacefullness of the area, rather than a specific destination. You weave along the river and eventually in to the redwoods, where the water views become filtered through the trees. Along the way, we saw a few banana slugs and enjoyed a mostly shaded trail. I would love to come back with my bike and do the whole trail, end to end. The start of the trail had more people, which then tapered to just a few bikers and runners after the first mile or so. Seems to be a local's spot and they're very lucky to have it!

I let them know we could do Thursday or stay with Wednesday and was told they would get back to us early Tuesday. Well at 4:45pm on Tuesday we reached out and asked if we were on for Wednesday and was told it is a no go and they are still working on putting something together for Thursday. I get it Charters are in business to make money and just a few folks on an outing isn't profitable but to leave booked clients hanging until the 11th hour and not reach out to them is not good business. What gets me is we saw them leaving the harbor twice on Wednesday. We're assuming it was for Ash scattering based on the attire and somber faces of the passengers and the lack of visible fishing gear both times. Not a bad turn for them at $500-$600 per trip (if the rates I recall are still them same); less time, less work... Bottom line is they didn't have the courtesy to call/text us to let us know we should look for another charter, we had to reach out to find out... Too bad, we have quite a few buddies who love to fish and we'll continue to go with the charter that got us in last minute and put us on our limits...

Get ready to hop on a train and roll through the woods--you can either sit inside the train or stand on an open car--that's what we did and it was lovely. Beautiful scenery (even in the dark) and fresh air. The destination itself is pretty cool. Fairy lights galore, lots of fire pits, tables, games, and really great live music. There's a little bar where you can order drinks (or mocktails) and you can even purchase a s'mores kit that comes with sticks so you can roast marshmallows on the fire. There's not a better way to spend an evening then sitting under the stars in the middle of the woods in front of a crackling fire (you're surrounded by fire wood piles so you get it as roaring as you'd like), great music and a beverage of your choice. Pro tips: The bathrooms are actual bathrooms and are nice, which is wonderful--I was expecting port-a-potties and was pleasantly surprised Of course one of the main draws is the bar and there's mostly adults there (at least when we were) but it's actually a very family friendly venue. I saw quite a few kids sitting with their families. The fire pits filled up fast. Head over on the first train of the night for your best chance to ensure you snag a seat there if that's what you're going for. Bring something to place on your chair if you get up to go to the bathroom or wander around. As the arrivals roll in, prime seating becomes a hot commodity. You can preorder a little cheese and cracker snack box. They also had chips and a few other grab and go snacks for sale at the bar (besides the s'mores) but that's about it. I believe you can bring your own food in if you like--I saw several people doing that. Or, just eat dinner at one of the amazing restaurants nearby before you come. The staff is super nice--from the folks in the gift shop, the conductors/train staff, the bartenders--they provide a really great experience! We had a blast here and can't wait to come back. Further to the left side of the beach are various jagged, giant rocks with some little passage ways. Our family dubbed this beach as "Sunset Beach" because they are un-real at this beach. The best is to climb the hill on the right side of the beach, & watching the sunset from there. One bummer is the amount of shell/wolf-life poaching. I remember being a child, wading through the shallow waters on the far left hand side of the beach, & there were tons of whole sand dollars everywhere. Now, people are too focused on the capital/social media "likes". Please, if you can, refrain from taking stuff in the beach.

While driving south from Fort Bragg, we took the Noyo Point Road just before the bridge and it took us down all the way till we reached the harbor. Several boats were docked to the harbor and there were a few waterfront restaurants around. Once upon a time, between late 1800s and early 1900s, Noyo Harbor was a very busy port. Almost every ship that came to San Francisco stopped by Fort Bragg at Noyo Harbor. The first railroads were laid in Fort Bragg in the year 1916, so until then all the transportation to this place was via the ocean. There is ample free parking here and several folks around were getting prepared to kayak in the wide Noyo Bay. As we walked on the stone structure that protruded into the Noyo Bay, we noticed several starfish and seals. Right behind us was a spectacular view of the Noyo Bay bridge and the harbor. This turned out to be such a one, and a convenient one at that, with just enough parking for us to squeeze into a space and go play in the sand. It turned out to be one of many cool spots we found last weekend on our extended weekend trip. What a cool beach this is! We were lucky to arrive in late afternoon, with overcast skies that made for a dramatic backdrop. I could have stayed here all day! This side of the road beach was a first time visit for me and I would definitely return. The bf climbed the boulder on the beach and thus was named King of the Rock. And there's nothing you girls can do about it. He wondered about climbing the boulder out in the ocean sometime and I said can you not? He is brave. I swoon. I noticed there were plenty of seashells among the seafoam and enjoyed looking at them while watching for incoming surf. If you are a dog there are an assortment of sticks for you to choose from. Two lorge logs were positioned on the beach for sitting, and we did have chairs we brought but didn't end up using them because we fancied some fresh beyond fresh seafood and didn't stay long enough for a heckin relax. Beware that the way you park determines if you'll be able to see who is coming around the corner when you're leaving. If you come in too fast and don't think about it, you won't be able to see crap when it's time to leave. Not that I did this or anything hahaha. There's not but a few feet between the parking spaces and the road. Don't worry, I was able to maneuver around another vehicle to exit safely, but had it been in a busy day in non rona times, that could have been ugly.

This is one of our favorite beaches when visiting the North Coast. It's a little harder to get to,…read morea little further way from where most people stay and very limited on parking, but it's a spacious, sandy getaway with plenty of glorious natural features. The beach is long and spacious, with majestic cliffs surrounding and "Whale Rock" at one end. The name is self-evident once you see it. My wife and I have taken long strolls with our son along the soft sand with the cold water lapping at our feet. It's an especially great spot for a picnic when the weather is right. During our last visit, we came on a weekday and virtually had the entire place to ourselves! There are some downsides, but I won't discount stars because the beach in itself is worth it. The biggest being the parking - a narrow strip of about ten spaces along a busy curvy road. If you can't find a spot here, which is usually the case if you don't come early, you'll be forced to find a spot further up the road in a culvert and hike back. Not the best situation, but again, the beach is wonderful!
