We came during off season in mid-January. It was cloudy and sunny, and there were no bugs. We took the 9:00a to 2:00pm tour. I think we got back to the retrieve our belongings at 1:30p. Our guide Kyle was amazing! Since it was off season, he took about 8 persons, 2 tandam kayaks. One guide can take 12 persons maximum. It was great that our group was smaller. The Wailua River is really serene and calm, so both persons forward paddle, versus the back person back paddling in more rapids like Colorado or Sacramento River. We paddled 1 mile to the hiking, and 1 mile back. My arms were a little sore afterwards. The highlight is the hike to the water fall, which is about 0.2 mi in, 0.2 mi out, however it took about 30-40 min one way. Some areas are bush whacking, river crossing (bring water shoes like Teva), some very muddy so you have to slow down, some have wood planks built. When you the to the waterfall, it is gorgeous, and we packed our own lunch to enjoy for about 30-40 minutes at the falls. There were no bugs as we went in mid-January. Morning tours are more cold, so bring a light wind jacket or rain jacket. Afternoon tours are warmer, but you risk having bugs and sunburn. Our guide Kyle, has been feeding this bird along the hiking path for 8 years. He is tame and will come for photos. I'm a bird feeder and watcher, so major kudos to Kyle! The scenery of the hike and kayak trip was surreal and will blow your mind. The photos don't do it justice. You will take a van from kayak launch at Wailua River about 3 minutes back to base camp. Kayak Wailua provides you a water proof bag for your belongings, and a cooler bag for your lunch. They also have a locker for other stuff you don't want to bring along. I love this alot, and the tamed wild bird was the big plus! read more

If this review were about the overall fun time we had, kayaking, hiking and swimming in the waterfall with our family, I would give it five stars! However, as a warning to others looking for a great tour/guide, I would sadly have to rate our experience with Kayak Wailea with two stars (which is generous). We chose to go with this company based off of their stellar reviews. After multiple reviews recommended Lisa as the guide, we scheduled our trip for a Thursday when come to find out, Lisa doesn't work Thursdays. When we arrived to the site, we got waved in by an employee who we assumed was our guide, only to never see her again. They provided us with dry bags and coolers, as well as told us what the best kayaking arrangements would be best for kayaking with five kids and five adults. After the few minutes it took our group of 10 to get sunscreened up, get life jackets for the kids, and lock away our belongings, we proceeded to sit around for the next 30+ minutes while another guide chit chatted with the other group. We all kind of sat around looking at each other, like, when are we going to get going? We finally loaded up the vans and headed to the river 50 min after our scheduled start time. Reed was the guide that drove our group of 10 plus two others to the river, though he never introduced himself to our group as our guide. After telling him what arrangements we wanted for the boats, he provided no instruction to our group as to kayaking technique, tips, etc., despite the majority of us being first timers. He simply instructed us to stay on one side of the river and to watch out for boats. Luckily, our group made it to the area where we stowed our kayaks and no kayaks flipped on the river in the process. At this point, we were still never told who was our guide, and there were two groups of 12 people. We began the hike and just followed the other large group for the duration. The hike itself was easy, albeit slippery in many areas. I definitely would not classify it as good for "all abilities" as advertised. After a little over a mile of hiking, and no guidance whatsoever along the way, we made it to a beautiful waterfall. At this point, Reed kindly took a nice group photo of our family. We stayed and played in the pool for a good 45 min or so before the kids in our group were cold and we were ready to head back. It was then that the two guides, Reed and Lisa, (it turns out Lisa joined us after all) had to strategize on how to get our group back at the same time as the other large group, as Lisa was planning on staying at the waterfall longer with a couple that arrived late to falls and wanted to enjoy it for more time. Initially, she alluded to us arriving back after dark? No thanks. Reed began heading back on the hike, and leading the group of 20, though this was never clearly communicated to us. We just followed him away from the falls, and when our 5 year old took longer than the others from the large group, our family fell behind. Instead of waiting at any point, the guide just plowed ahead and we ended up not seeing him again until we made it back to our kayaks. Never was there any apology, or "You made it!" offered. The lack of guidance was disappointing and frustrating, especially when reading the other reviews about how amazing the guides were. We were lucky to have had great weather and made it to the kayaks in a timely fashion by ourselves. We again kayaked back with no guidance or encouragement along the way. When all was said and done, our family/group of 10 had a wonderful time, in spite of the absolute absence of a guide or help. This review gives two stars; one star for the kayak and equipment provided and one star for the van ride. Maybe they had an off day, but our experience with Kayak Wailua was lacking, just like our guide. read more

Highly recommend wearing close-toed shoes but they had a whole bunch of "loaners" if you forget. They also have 3-seat kayaks. Great for a family or group with an odd number. This was the highlight of our first trip to Kauai. The cost of a tour with Kayak Wailua is lower than renting a kayak from other companies. The equipment was in good shape, and they even offered dry bags, cooler bags, and loaner shoes. Our guide, Lisa, was introduced by another guide we ran into on the hike as one of the OGs on the river, and it showed through her mindfulness of keeping everyone safe at all times and sharing her wealth of knowledge with us! We learned about so many flowers and even got to taste some of the sweet nectar. She was very engaging with my 13-year-old son. She even played a drum for a portion of our hike. We really enjoyed our guided kayak trip up there Wailua river. Our guide Kyle was great. We chose the early morning time and greeted our 7 other kayakers at the tour headquarters. A brief discussion on safety and shoes and we were off. My wife and I did a double kayak while our daughter did a single. While it's not super hard you will feel pain the next day from muscles you've never used! It took 45 mins to go up the river. Then it was a 30 minute walk to the waterfall. It's worth having a guide because we saw so many people not knowing where to go and it was great to have some help up a couple of the difficult terrain and name some of the plants and history of the area. We had a great time on this tour. The tour provides a wetbag and backpack for your use. Then you take a short drive to the launch area. The kayaks were ready to board and launch. From there, you need to paddle about 2 miles or about 45 minutes; you disembark and then hike for another 30-45 minutes to get to the waterfall. It should be noted that you are totally exposed- there is no cover so make sure you take sunscreen and cover, as necessary. The hike is relatively easy, but scenic. Recommend to use covered shoes (no slippers) as you are crossing streams/rocks/gravel. The waterfalls were spectacular- we spent about 15 minutes there before heading back. Tour guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Overall, we enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone who has the physical capability. read more

We had a wonderful experience with Kayak Wailua. Although our experience was cut short due to high water levels, we still had a great time. I really appreciate the staff caring about the safety of those attending to say that it was unsafe to cross. We also got a partial refund since we could not go the entirety of the trip. Even though we didn't make it to the falls, the view was absolutely beautiful. The part that made the trip as great as it was, was our tour guide, Makayla. This is probably going to live in my memory as my favorite adventure ever. You have to carry all of your items with you the entire time. They provide huge wet bags and bag pack style coolers. My husband and I were fine with only bringing 2 small towels, 3 liters of water, hats, and 2 protein bars each. The kayaking was just challenging enough for my husband and I in our late thirties. The hike was very easy, but you had to watch your footing. The stream crossing was very simple, but I guess with more rain it would be more challenging. Our guide was able to do the whole hike barefoot. I don't think our 10 & 8 years old girls could have done this trip. The hike moved too quickly and the kayaking would have been too much. Our guide, Annie, gave us the most incredible experience. She was so fun and encouraging. She knew the best photo spots along the river and was our personal photographer. I wouldn't count on being able to change and shower at the location afterwards. There's only 1 spot to shower and everyone has to double park, so unless you're ok with making everyone wait then make other plans. read more

It was a total of about 4 miles in kayaking and a 2 mile hike round trip. Get ready to get muddy, but it was so much fun. Our guide, Lisa, was a so kind, knowledgeable and an exceptionally caring guide. Lisa provided lots of historical facts and Hawaiian stories as the tour continued throughout the day. She was funny, easy going and even played the bongo drum as we hiked. It was so neat and cool. She even made a walking stick by hand during the hike for an older gentleman. What great service! Thank you Lisa! This tour only cost $60 as opposed to the $90-95 tours only due to a sandwich and chip lunch being provided...and the other tour will provide a walking stick. However, to save $30-35 per person, we packed our own sandwiches, chips and drinks. It was a great savings! The company will provide you with a backpack and a water tight bag- backpack to store phones, cameras, and etc. If you haven't tried this adventure, it's a must try and see. At the end, you get to a secret wall fall in the jungle. Have lunch, hydrate and take a dip in the fresh water. Great picture ops! A water camera is highly recommended if you wish to swim and kayak while taking pictures. We got a cheap on from Costco for about $100. Try this adventure if you like outdoor physical things. Annie was the best tour guide ever! Super friendly, funny, knowledgeable about kayaking, and the island. My husband and I booked this for our honeymoon 2 months in advance and it was totally worth it! You'll feel the burn in your arms if you paddle hard but there's nothing wrong with taking it slow. The hike was pretty easy, walked through some shallow streams and one that is about up to your thighs. During COVID, they built a platform during most of the hike which makes it much easier to walk and get to the waterfall. We were so thankful for the provided water proof bags and backpacks that were a cooler for our lunches we brought. We'd definitely recommend this adventure for all ages and would do it again! We had a great paddle, hike and visit to Sacred Falls with Brandon (who is a fountain of Hawaiian and horticultural knowledge) on what turned into a rainy Friday. Since we were staying at Poipu beach, we opted for a 10 am tour which gave us time to get there and have a hearty breakfast at Kountry Kitchen and pick up some sandwiches for lunch (tours operate as BYO lunch since they don't get back until around 3). How it works/what to expect: -follow their directions and arrive at the compound early to check in -pack up your stuff in their dry bags and load into the van for the short drive to the launch spot -they use easy to maneuver ride on top kayaks-2/boat -paddle up the calm, peaceful river-2-1/2 miles -hike 30 minutes-plan for VERY slippery muddy conditions so wear sturdy shoes that can get wet and muddy (or ones you want to throw away) -arrive at falls, swim, eat your picnic lunch (if you brought one) -trek and paddle back-about 5 hours in total -remember to tip your guide Note: it is NOT POSSIBLE to avoid deep slippery mud or fording through cool streams-plan accordingly. He gave us lots of cool info. Showed us some plants that we could eat. I tried three times to find out if this was too difficult for my 76 year old mom. Twice on the phone I was told that 80 year olds do this kayak and hike all the time. The hike was flat and all we needed was good shoes. This really ruined our trip. I had to hold my moms hand through the entire hike and I injured my knee in doing so. The guide tried to have my 96 lb daughter and I tow a boat with her friend and my mom. He was so bored that he was on his phone. We ran into some branches. So he disconnected our boats and the 96 lb Friend had to kayak my mom pretty much by her self the entire way back. I really expected the guide to trade places with my mom. Or I could've traded places with my daughters friend. It just didn't seem helpful enough and to be on your phone bc we were slow is just ludicrous. My daughters friend was so sore that she couldn't do anything else for 2 days. Then after going on the hike the waterfall was just a wet wall so not worth the hike or kayak. While I realize that the kayaking place doesn't have control over this, I want people to know that this is a possibility. The hike to ho'opi falls was better if you want to get up close to some falls. read more

I called as soon as I realized I booked for the wrong island ‍ I still get the names confused at times unlike those that know Hawaiian better than me. I mistook Wailea with Wailua. I'm sure it happens a lot ... sure! Haha The manager was nice enough to refund my money without question. Apparently however, I cannot book again with this company. This is what I read in the email confirming that the refund had been processed. That or it was a typo ‍ If it wasn't, just wanted to share this experience with others because it left a bitter taste in my mouth although they were nice enough to understand the whole situation. Plus others need to know the kind of staff they are doing business with. Also would like to take the time to apologize if I lost the company money. What a wonderful experience we had on our kayak, hike, and waterfall experience! We started out by getting checked in by Annie. She briefed the group about the day and handed out dry bags to prepare to head out to the marina. Once at the marina, we were assigned kayaks and she helped everyone get into the water and start to paddle around in the cove. Keep in mind, your feet will get wet! We wore hiking shoes and socks and truthfully, we don't regret that! You then paddle up the river going as fast or as slow as you want. Annie was there to keep everyone on track while offering to take photos along the way! She provided interesting info about Hawaii and then area we were in while paddling to the hiking spot. Upon arriving at the kayak pull up, you will get wet again. We started the 1.5-2.0 mile hike to the waterfall. Be prepared to force a few rivers! It did pour while on the trail, but honestly, it's part of the experience! There are a few places that are uneven, but other all, the hike was great. You spend about 30 min at the waterfall and it's beautiful! Worth the hike! The walk back seemed much shorter along with the paddle. We had an amazing time and enjoyed chatting with Annie during our paddles! We are two late 30 year olds in moderate shape and it was a breeze! Don't miss out on this great activity! Kayak Wailua has been our Wailua river kayaking company for many years. We have always been greeted like ohana when checking in, selecting gear, transporting us and our kayaks to the river, teaching us how to kayak, leading us on an incredible hike through rivers and the Queen's Bath, and swimming at the Secret Falls. Lisa is the absolute best guide. She makes us walking sticks... a must if it has recently rained to get across some rivers and streams. Kauai has improved the hike by installing a walkway in some of the muddy and ruddy areas although there are still some areas that can be hard to navigate. Water shoes are strongly recommended. Kayaks are equipped with seat backs to make the kayaking more comfortable and dry bags. Kayak Wailua and Lisa are the best. read more

I remember the last time I hiked to a waterfall. Back in my college days our photo class got together for field trips. We took photos of each other in the water. There wasn't much water in San Diego so the waterfall was really small. Secret Falls was quite different. The quantity of water is much greater and the height from which it falls much higher. To get there we chose Kayak Wailua Tours. People are really nice at the shack where we checked in and borrowed footwear. I found a pair of KEENS. They require closed toe shoes to trek through streams and mud. A quick van ride to the kayaks and we started paddling up the Wailua River. Taking the North Fork Wailua River we parked our kayaks near Secret Falls and hiked the rest of the way through a lush tropical forest. Our guide pointed out many interesting trees and plants. Then we arrived at Secret Falls and went for a swim in the chill water. I stood under the falls and was pounded by falling water. It's possible to get a massage if you can withstand the stinging, freezing water. It was beautiful kayaking the river, hiking through the tropical forest, and going under the waterfall. Our tour guide Ryan was great pointing out the sights and helping us kayak properly. read more

We had a 10am tour on a Friday and the weather was perfect! They gave us backpacks and dry bags to use. Canoeing up and down the river was so peaceful. Super easy too as you're not dealing with any current. The hike was nice as you had to cross the river a couple times and walk across a lot of rocks but the scenery is so beautiful. You definitely want to wear sturdy hiking sandals or shoes. The waterfall is spectacular and is a great spot to cool off in. Would recommend to to all to do this tour. read more

James pointed out a whole bunch of different plants and their uses--he knows so much about the land! The kayaking was lovely, and the hike was enjoyable! You can bring your cell phone for pictures in the dry bags that they so graciously provide! Some advice: eat a big meal before, bring sunscreen and mosquito repellent (SO many mosquitoes on the hike), and wear water/hiking shoes, or sneakers that you don't mind getting muddy. Now, why I can only give them 4 stars (I seriously considered 3): their online waiver form. It asks for information it has zero need. What specific meds you are on (can you spell HIPPA violation?), exact birth date, home address, etc. You already had to initial you were old enough, in good health, etc. If I have any personal data breach, I will have this firm investigated! read more

We arrived early for our tour to be greeted by a staff member who informed us that we would only be offered a partial kayak tour due to some unforeseen overnight flooding. He told us we could continue anyways, reschedule or get a refund. My husband and I were game and weren't going to let a little change in plans derail our adventure so we opted to participate anyways. Now, "partial tour" led me to believe that we would not have our full 4 hr experience but we did! I was pleasantly surprised. We kayaked the beautiful river up to the fishing village and explored for a bit. Our immortal tour guide James was insightful. He had a lot to share about the land. He definitely made things very, very interesting. It was well worth our time and turned out to be a beautiful day! James showed us so much at the village and even found us some coconuts to drink/eat. Group of 10... with 4 small kids (ages 7, 6, and 3s) and one pregnant lady took this trip with the amazing tour guide Kyle. Kyle was patient, knowledgeable, and super helpful with our group. I highly recommend this as an activity while in Kauai. You really get to experience the beauty of the Garden Island. Kyle was super informative, we were engaged, but more importantly, our kids were engaged! The "secret" waterfall is semi not secret but it is beautiful. Our route was muddy and kids and adults fell but we did well overall. It took us total of 5.5 hours - kayak, hike, waterfall/swim, hike, kayak. I would rate our hike to be easy/moderate. There is a clean Porto-potty at the office (it flushes!) And an outdoor shower and changing station when you get back. I know this is stated in the email, but please tip your guide! I visited in October 2021 and knew I had a choice when selecting a tour company to kayak the Wailua River. We were a group of 6 guys who have rented kayaks several times, and we knew that we all wanted single person kayaks. After calling all of the tour companies in the area, Kayak Wailua was the only one who would offer single kayaks for each of us. Normally, they only allow single kayaks based upon available space within the tour, as each tour is only permitted 6 kayaks on the water. Since we visited outside of the peak season, Pete made a special accommodation for all 6 of us to have a single kayak, thereby maxing out the tour to a total of 6 people (just us!), and preventing them from allowing more on this specific tour time. Thank you so much Pete! The tour itself was our favorite activity of the week, we all agreed it was so much more fun than the ATV tour we did two days prior. We were provided with kayaks, nylon insulated backpacks which served as coolers, and dry backpacks. They also provide life jackets, but as avid swimmers we were not required to use or bring them. We brought sandwiches and snacks from the Safeway in Kapa'a, and had a picnic at the Sacred Falls. I'd recommend bringing water shoes or sandals that have good grip (I used Keens), insect repellant, clothes that can get wet, and sunblock. Note that you will hike through some mud! Kayak Wailua claims to be the only company that has outdoor showers and changing rooms for you to clean off after your tour. We couldn't have imagined a better tour guide than Reid. He was incredibly knowledgeable about the river, the foliage, and the waterfall, and he kept us safe and comfortable the entire time. We enjoyed getting to know him and he felt like the 7th member of our guys group. Just an all-around fun and super nice guy. Jakkari drove us a quick 5 minutes to the marina, helped with unloading our kayaks, and was there waiting for us when we returned! Also-- she had an amazing music playlist in the air conditioned shuttle bus. I'm so glad I went with Kayak Wailua, it was absolutely perfect in every way.
