Had a fantastic time today with our Guide Mckayla! She was amazing! Kayak trip was just long enough to be challenging but definitely doable for most. The hike was fun, muddy, and was a great adventure. The falls did not disappoint! If you go make sure to get the full experience and go under the falls! Can't say enough about Mckayla our guide though, she was amazing with her knowledge and how she interacted with our 6yr old son. He loved her in his words "Mckayla was the best person ever, and she made the best vacation ever"

If this review were about the overall fun time we had, kayaking, hiking and swimming in the waterfall with our family, I would give it five stars! However, as a warning to others looking for a great tour/guide, I would sadly have to rate our experience with Kayak Wailea with two stars (which is generous). We chose to go with this company based off of their stellar reviews. After multiple reviews recommended Lisa as the guide, we scheduled our trip for a Thursday when come to find out, Lisa doesn't work Thursdays. When we arrived to the site, we got waved in by an employee who we assumed was our guide, only to never see her again. They provided us with dry bags and coolers, as well as told us what the best kayaking arrangements would be best for kayaking with five kids and five adults. After the few minutes it took our group of 10 to get sunscreened up, get life jackets for the kids, and lock away our belongings, we proceeded to sit around for the next 30+ minutes while another guide chit chatted with the other group. We all kind of sat around looking at each other, like, when are we going to get going? We finally loaded up the vans and headed to the river 50 min after our scheduled start time. Reed was the guide that drove our group of 10 plus two others to the river, though he never introduced himself to our group as our guide. After telling him what arrangements we wanted for the boats, he provided no instruction to our group as to kayaking technique, tips, etc., despite the majority of us being first timers. He simply instructed us to stay on one side of the river and to watch out for boats. Luckily, our group made it to the area where we stowed our kayaks and no kayaks flipped on the river in the process. At this point, we were still never told who was our guide, and there were two groups of 12 people. We began the hike and just followed the other large group for the duration. The hike itself was easy, albeit slippery in many areas. I definitely would not classify it as good for "all abilities" as advertised. After a little over a mile of hiking, and no guidance whatsoever along the way, we made it to a beautiful waterfall. At this point, Reed kindly took a nice group photo of our family. We stayed and played in the pool for a good 45 min or so before the kids in our group were cold and we were ready to head back. It was then that the two guides, Reed and Lisa, (it turns out Lisa joined us after all) had to strategize on how to get our group back at the same time as the other large group, as Lisa was planning on staying at the waterfall longer with a couple that arrived late to falls and wanted to enjoy it for more time. Initially, she alluded to us arriving back after dark? No thanks. Reed began heading back on the hike, and leading the group of 20, though this was never clearly communicated to us. We just followed him away from the falls, and when our 5 year old took longer than the others from the large group, our family fell behind. Instead of waiting at any point, the guide just plowed ahead and we ended up not seeing him again until we made it back to our kayaks. Never was there any apology, or "You made it!" offered. The lack of guidance was disappointing and frustrating, especially when reading the other reviews about how amazing the guides were. We were lucky to have had great weather and made it to the kayaks in a timely fashion by ourselves. We again kayaked back with no guidance or encouragement along the way. When all was said and done, our family/group of 10 had a wonderful time, in spite of the absolute absence of a guide or help. This review gives two stars; one star for the kayak and equipment provided and one star for the van ride. Maybe they had an off day, but our experience with Kayak Wailua was lacking, just like our guide.

    Great views from the river

Our guide Brandon was informative and funny. The kayaking was amazing. The hike was good but really slick and muddy, which we knew it would be going into it. Highly recommend wearing close-toed shoes but they had a whole bunch of "loaners" if you forget. They also have 3-seat kayaks. Great for a family or group with an odd number. Plan about 5-6 hours total including check-in, orientation and transportation to and from the location. It's our favorite excursion on the island, hands down.

Tour was fantastic and very informative. Amazing views, amazing hike, and the waterfall experience was next level. Jonathan was awesome and made the whole trip fun and easy. Knew so much about the island and the landscape and really made us feel so welcome and educated. Would give 100 stars if possible, would recommend this for anyone! Families, Couples, solo riders looking to get close to the culture and history of the island. Can't wait to come back!

We had a morning tour with McKenzie. She was AWESOME it seriously felt like we were best friends and I had known her forever. She was funny and also informative. I love that she shared stories and pointed out things I never would have noticed. She was so caring and seemed genuinely interested in our trip and where we came from. The tour itself was just breathtaking and hard to believe it's a real place. A very perfect way to spend our morning

Excellent tour! We've been to Kauai no less than 20 times, this was our first kayak adventure-- we were not disappointed! Very friendly staff who were ready and waiting when we arrived at 7:30am. Brendan (our guide) was friendly, helpful, knowledgeable and genuinely wanted to get to know us. He was conscientious to all members of our group throughout the entire trip. Highly recommend! Note: this is a trek, both by kayak and hiking. Not steep but muddy and slippery-- so worth the time and effort! The waterfall is gorgeous; take your lunch and ENJOY!!

Very late review! Was here on a girls trip in September. Lisa was our guide. She is the best!!! She was patient and kind. She sang to us and told great stories. I was a little behind on the way back and she hung out with me as I struggled up stream. LOL!! I thought I was cool cuz I had my own kayak. Coming back this November and I hope we run into Lisa on the river. I highly recommend this company for your kayak adventures.

This was the highlight of our first trip to Kauai. The cost of a tour with Kayak Wailua is lower than renting a kayak from other companies. The equipment was in good shape, and they even offered dry bags, cooler bags, and loaner shoes. Our guide, Lisa, was introduced by another guide we ran into on the hike as one of the OGs on the river, and it showed through her mindfulness of keeping everyone safe at all times and sharing her wealth of knowledge with us! We learned about so many flowers and even got to taste some of the sweet nectar. She was very engaging with my 13-year-old son. She even played a drum for a portion of our hike. A passerby remarked, "bare feet and playing a drum, she must be a local." Lisa made a magical experience even more memorable. Highly recommend this company!

    Kayaking up Wailua river

We really enjoyed our guided kayak trip up there Wailua river. Our guide Kyle was great. We chose the early morning time and greeted our 7 other kayakers at the tour headquarters. A brief discussion on safety and shoes and we were off. My wife and I did a double kayak while our daughter did a single. While it's not super hard you will feel pain the next day from muscles you've never used! It took 45 mins to go up the river. Then it was a 30 minute walk to the waterfall. It's worth having a guide because we saw so many people not knowing where to go and it was great to have some help up a couple of the difficult terrain and name some of the plants and history of the area. Definitely jump into water, it's cold but so worth it!

We had a wonderful experience with Kayak Wailua. Although our experience was cut short due to high water levels, we still had a great time. I really appreciate the staff caring about the safety of those attending to say that it was unsafe to cross. We also got a partial refund since we could not go the entirety of the trip. Even though we didn't make it to the falls, the view was absolutely beautiful. The part that made the trip as great as it was, was our tour guide, Makayla. (I am not sure if I am spelling her name correctly). She was very kind and helpful. She was very attentive to each person that attended and was very knowledgeable of things to do on Kauai and the nature along the kayaking route. We would definitely recommend using Kayak Wailua and if you can get Makayla as your tour guide, you'll have an amazing time.

Tour guide said the waterfall was never empty like this, but we went on a windy day. I guess everyone was too scared.

This is probably going to live in my memory as my favorite adventure ever. You have to carry all of your items with you the entire time. They provide huge wet bags and bag pack style coolers. My husband and I were fine with only bringing 2 small towels, 3 liters of water, hats, and 2 protein bars each. The kayaking was just challenging enough for my husband and I in our late thirties. The hike was very easy, but you had to watch your footing. The stream crossing was very simple, but I guess with more rain it would be more challenging. Our guide was able to do the whole hike barefoot. I don't think our 10 & 8 years old girls could have done this trip. The hike moved too quickly and the kayaking would have been too much. Our guide, Annie, gave us the most incredible experience. She was so fun and encouraging. She knew the best photo spots along the river and was our personal photographer. I wouldn't count on being able to change and shower at the location afterwards. There's only 1 spot to shower and everyone has to double park, so unless you're ok with making everyone wait then make other plans.

I can't rave enough about our kayak adventure to Secret Falls with Kayak Wailua. Our guide Fayd taught us so much along the way about the plants, foods and animals! I highly recommend both him as your guide and this organized and friendly company. This is a must-do family adventure for those interested in some outdoors fun on the island.

Today's trip 10 and 12. Another great day.

This was our third time using Kayak Wailua and this time was just as great as before. Our favorite guide is Lisa, we first met her 6 years ago when our girls were 4 and 6. The river, hike, falls and experience have changed over the years and the amount of people on the river now is genuinely excessive. That being said, this business and their guides are top notch. We have kayaked and hiked all over the world and these guides are truly special. It's hard for a small business to keep employees for years and even harder in a tourist destination but this one has and will continue to do so. Thank you for another fantastic day and a priceless family experience.

So many people talk about kayaking the Wailua River and hiking to Secret Falls. We didn't get a chance to do this on our last trip, but my youngest and I tackled this on this trip! Our guide, Ronda, arrived a couple minutes after our tour start time at 1pm. The morning guide said she'd be along "in island time." Once she got there, she took the time to tell us a little about herself, went around our group and had us each introduce ourselves and share a few words. She took the time to memorize all of our names! She also explained to us as all the other tours were heading out, that she liked to hang back and let everyone go do their thing so we can experience the falls privately as just our group. This girl knows what she's doing! It was about a two mile kayaking journey up the Wailua River with stops intermittently along the way for our "kayak kisses" so Ronda could tell us about the history and other aspects of the island. We were almost in our own little version of Survivor, thinking up ways we could survive out there and what we would need. It was honestly very cool. Once we got the end of the kayaking journey, we were given walking sticks for the moderate 1 mile hike to Secret Falls. There are a couple of areas where you have to cross through water, but nothing higher than the knees, at that time. The hike was beautiful! Ronda pointed out the Hawaiian Woodrose, kukui nuts, which we got to crack open and have a small sample, we washed our hands with awapuhi from the awapuhi plant, etc. it was such a cool adventure. We met the local songbird and dug to find worms for him to eat. He ate right from our hands! He actually landed on my hand and looked at me for a couple seconds! We saw cows on the journey home as well. Secret Falls is amazing. We had a blast swimming around there and resting from the journey. We met a lot of great people in our tour. It was like we all became a little family. We packed up and hiked back to our kayaks and headed back down the Wailua for the journey home. This time the wind was against us, so it was literally like paddling upstream both ways lol! This was such an amazing experience. I'm sure I'm leaving some things out because there was so much! I would say, if you're doing the 1pm tour, don't have any other plans the rest of the day. You don't want to be in a rush to get out of there. Our 5 hour tour ended up being close to 7 hours. It was nice because on the way back the motorized vessels were no longer on the river, so we didn't have to worry about other traffic. I'd also recommend having dinner for that night figured out ahead of time because most places locally close at 8pm. We were able to grab dinner from a spot about 10 minutes prior to their closing. They recommend tennis shoes or hiking boots, but my daughter and I used our water socks/reef shoes and while there were a couple times when we were bouldering I would have liked to have better shoes, ultimately it wasn't an issue. Ronda gives you an opportunity to unplug from the world, get yourself on island time, and take in all the beauty Kauai has to offer. Take it!

As soon as we unloaded the bus we parked our kayaks, packed up our belongings in water proof bags and set sail. Haha! If you're not a swimmer, they do provide life jackets. We kayaked along the River for about 45 minutes and then parked next to the hiking trail. Hiking sandals are a must need for this excursion by the way. I made the mistake of wearing hiking shoes which got all messed up in the mud. Yes, folks! When I say there is mud, be prepared to get your clothes wet and muddy. There is a part during the rocky hike where you will need to walk in the river waist deep to get to the other side. If you're not a strong hiker, a walking stick will help you keep your balance. I've seen a few people fall from the slippery rocks so make sure to keep a steady pace. With that in mind, you'll make your way to the beautiful waterfall that awaits you at the end. Picture worthy! For those who've never been here before, keep in mind of the time you'll spend here. As I mentioned earlier, it was about 5 and half hours long from start to finish. Kayaking there takes almost an hour. Hiking takes just as long. With all the slippery rocks and the mud, please don't wear your Sundays best. You will get dirty! Bring lots of water to stay hydrated and some snacks and a light lunch to keep your energy up. You will get tired hiking and kayaking back to base camp. Overall, this experience was pretty awesome! Definitely made some memories here that my friends and I will share forever.

We just had to do our part of carrying the drinks, cookie, and chips (also included in the tour price) in our dry bags. Steven also shared a lot of stories and cultural backgrounds about Wailua River and parts of the trail leading up to Secret Falls. We were provided with double-kayaks, and my partner and I were able to get through the somewhat rough stretch of Wailua River, though we often fell behind the others (haha!) but thankfully we did not flip over into the water! It's about 40-45 minutes in each direction and there is a designated section at the trailhead where we will leave our kayaks. Lots of other tour groups and those hiking and paddling independently! It had been a few years since kayaking a longer distance; the last time for me was Flat Island and Mokulua Islands in Kailua on Oahu in January 2017. As for the trail itself, yes it is muddy here and there and can be slippery. Therefore, it is best to use closed-toe water shoes and a hiking stick, as you will have to cross through at least 5 streams along the way and depending on the weather and other factors, the water level can get up to the knees or even waist-high and the currents can be strong too! The wet season is certainly a good time to see Uluwehi Falls (Secret Falls) at its finest! My oh my was it flowing! Lots of other people came to take a dip in the water, and eat their lunch nearby. Be aware, there are lots of feral chickens in the area so you really have to keep an eye on your food, otherwise they will literally steal it if you are not paying attention! When we got back to Kayak Kauai's main offices and store, we all had some delicious pineapple, and definitely much-needed after a long excursion! Overall, this is such a great experience and I would totally recommend it!

Our adventure started off by meeting at the office/pick up location. Then we loaded up into a van and made the short drive to the slipway. There we selected kayaks and were given oars and life jackets. Once we got situated, we hit the water. The weather that day was perfect; the sun was out with some clouds, and there was a light, constant breeze. Our journey on the water was a beautiful one. The water was cool, the scenery was green. I'll admit, the kayaking distance was a bit challenging. Maybe a bit more so as my husband and I are competitive and we were nearly racing with another couple. LOL! Once we reached shore, we gathered up and made our way to the hiking path. Honestly, the hike itself is not hard, with the exception of a few spots that may require teamwork/assistance. (**READ TIPS BELOW) Once we reached the waterfall, most of us went into the water. We stayed there for about 20-30 minutes. Our guide never rushed us. He sat back and let us enjoy ourselves. It was only when we all gathered up again that we headed back, same hike in reverse back to the kayaks. Once in the kayaks it was the same way back as well. The scenery was VERY beautiful. Several pictures were taken. Overall we had a great day. We would definitely recommend to anyone who has never been to Kauai and to anyone who is interested in being surrounded by beautiful scenery. TIPS: - [ ] Wear good shoes! The terrain can be unstable due to river rocks, tree roots, mud, and uneven ground. Your feet WILL get soaked and the ground is unstable. My husband and I both opted to wear sneakers that we were ready to retire. When we were done we threw them away. Another couple wore aqua shoes and they said they were extremely uncomfortable: good for water, bad for the rough terrain. Another couple wore brand new hiking boots and they became water logged. - [ ] Wear sunscreen!! Even if it's overcast, the harsh island sun will magnify through the clouds. - [ ] Sunglasses and a hat/visor is a wise choice. **if you wear a hat or visor, it may create a blind spot. Keep your head up! One person in our group hit their head twice on the same tree branch! - [ ] Wear clothing you can get wet. You will get wet from the waist down from the kayaking and hike. - [ ] Wear swimwear underneath your clothing. When you get to the waterfall, there is a pool of water you are able to swim in. - [ ] Bring a backpack/secure bag with water and snacks! You will need it! - [ ] Bring towels and leave them in the car. At the end of the day, when stripping off your wet shoes and socks the towels come in handy. *** For reference, our groups ages ranged from 52 to approximately early 70's.

We booked this experience with less than 48 hours' notice, which was super convenient. The check-in…read moreprocess was quick and smooth--just arrive at your scheduled time, get ready, and head out. You pull your kayak (on wheels) to the launch site and push off from there; it's definitely doable. We opted to go without a guide and simply followed the provided map, which was very straightforward. However, in my opinion, the activity wasn't worth the price. Paddling two miles each way was pretty strenuous, especially with kids. The hike to Secret Falls was extremely muddy, particularly after rain, and we saw lots of people slipping and falling. It's not a huge problem, but you'll definitely want to plan for a shower afterwards. They do provide a large wet bag, but ours smelled strongly of body odor from repeated use without proper cleaning--definitely unpleasant. If I could do it over again, I would have canceled and just explored the state park on foot. For the amount of effort required, I felt the experience was overpriced.

The scenery along the river and hike was stunning, and the whole experience felt like the perfect mix of adventure and relaxation. Our guide, Michael, really made the trip special. He shared so much interesting information about the river, the history of the area, the plants, and the wildlife--and kept us laughing the whole way with his endless supply of dad jokes (now upgraded with 10% more!). If you're looking for a unique way to experience the natural beauty of Kauai, this tour is it. Come for the adventure, stay for Michael's humor. Highly recommended!

We had a great experience here! We did the Wednesday morning kayak adventure so we got to the…read moremarina at 7am. It was just my family - the 5 of us - and our guide, Mikayla. Since there were an odd number of us, she gave us her single kayak so I was able to use that on the way out and then switched with my brother on the way back. It was really nice to basically have that private tour! Unfortunately because of the rain and rising waters, we weren't able to do the hike & waterfall portion of the trip but the kayaking along the river was really nice and enjoyable. Mikayla did take us out of the kayaks and show us some of the surrounding area and shared with us information about the different plants. It was fun! We only got a downpour on the way back for the marina for about 10min but that was part of the experience! We didn't eat breakfast before and do actually the length of time worked well for us. We left around 7:30am ish and made it back around 9;30am. The company refunded us 50% since weather made the hike portion impossible. Totally recommend bringing food though if you do the full thing:) and bring shoes good for hiking. Mikayla was friendly and helped get my two siblings (who hadn't kayaked before) adjusted and paddling in a straight line rather than zigzagging across. She was a great guide and would definitely recommend her! We learned a lot. And she gave us more recommendations around the island for the rest of our trip.

The…read moreRum Guys, Bruce and Tanji, led us on a delightful journey through Kilohana Plantation with detailed info on the history, animals, and plant life there at the plantation. We especially enjoyed touring the orchard, including the banana slap experience (!!!), and learning about different types of fruits that can grow in the Kauai climate. The rum tasting also did not let us down. We sampled different flavors of Koloa Rum (the safari and the Rum Guys are unaffiliated with Koloa Rum, which had a separate tasting room and shop on site), followed by a Mai Tai and an additional fresh cocktail. Bruce and Tanji were excellent guides and comedians, delighting my whole party, which contained a range of ages and senses of humor. My uncle was really impressed with their ability to read the room and crack exactly the right jokes to make all of us laugh. They were also incredibly informative and provided local tips on where to go (and where to avoid) next. Mahalo, Rum Guys!!

Booking we thought, drinking and animals were worth the price of admission but the tour is more than that. I can't praise our amazing tour guides, Tiny and Rick, enough. They were knowledgeable, hilarious, and incredibly kind. Rick educated us on all the agriculture grown on the farm which was fascinating, and was able to answer any questions anyone threw at him. The mai tais were obviously amazing but their original farm cocktail was knock your socks off good. If you're considering booking, do it right now! The four of us who went talked about it for the rest of the trip- I can't recommend it enough!
