We tried to book a kayak at multiple places closer to our hotel and no one would call us back. On our first call here, they answered and were very helpful so we knew we wanted to use them. Their prices were better also and they give you a ton of tips and tricks. They gave us a map and told us how to get to the rock jump after the waterfall. We noticed none of the guided tours were going that way so if we hadn't gone to Scotty's we never would have had the amazing opportunity to jump off a rock jump as a family. They also have an after hours drop off which meant we weren't on a time constraint which was great since we have kids who get tired kayaking. I wish I could give them 6 stars instead of 5 because the service was so top notch and we had not had that good of service anywhere else on Kaua'i! read more

It is half the cost of the tours, Scotty gave us great directions to Secret Falls and Fern Grotto, and we could go at our own pace and fully take in the spectacular beauty. We reserved a tandem kayak a few days ago online based on the reviews here. Everyone loves this place and for good reason - very friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable about the area. They helped us put our kayak on the car and gave detailed directions for getting to the boat landing as well as where we'd beach our boat to do the hike. We booked a special price for a "quick trip", which was a 9am-2pm rental that included a dry bag and lifejackets. When I expressed concern about my stability in muddy conditions, he also lent me a hiking pole which was amazingly helpful. Returning the kayak was easy and quick. read more

Everyone was very helpful and informative. We decided to walk our kayaks down to the boat ramp which took us 10 mins using their little dolly. The kayaks were nice and worked perfect. They included dry bags, a small cooler, life vests and the walking dolly with the price and the price was affordable! These guys are amazing. They are really flexible about the return time which is nice. Scotty was super friendly and knowledgeable about the area and the weather. He had really good advice for the trip to the waterfall and also areas that are less well known. Most importantly is that you can immediately tell they aren't trying to rip people off. The booking includes everything you could possibly need. They throw in trekking poles, dry sacks, cooler, etc. Whatever you need they are happy to provide it at no extra charge. I'm so used to every place nickel and diming you for every little thing, this was extremely refreshing. We were telling Scotty about another hike we were planning on doing the following day and he offered to let us keep our trekking poles an extra day to use on that hike. I reserved a tandem kayak with Scotty's via e-mail a month in advance before my visit to kauai. It seemed like one of the few places that let you rent a kayak instead of doing a guided tour to the secret falls. They were super nice and easy to communicate with. A few days before my trip they texted and said they accidentally booked the double kayaks! However they offered to do 2 single kayaks for the price of one which was such a great deal. Scotty's is part of a resort so I had a little trouble finding it. They threw in a cooler, phone case and life jacket if you want. They even had sun screen and walked us through how to get to the falls and other attractions. We chose to wheel the kayaks to the river and they helped us with the equipment. Their policy is that if you don't have fun you don't have to pay but of course it was amazing! Super nice guys and very friendly. After we were done I got a fresh lei that was so pretty:) and a cute cat sticker! Definitely come to Scotty's for a rental! read more

Awesome place!! Local vibe!! No time limit just day rentals and they are just chill and cool. They are also chill if you are running a bit late since you are enjoying the falls so much!!! We didn't have a rack so Charles was helpful in loading the kayak's with these air foam things and straps to keep it tight. Charles have a quick explanation on the kayak and then the hike. To get to the parking area is about 5 min drive. The kayaking is about 40 min or so and the hike is about 40 min- 1 hour depending how much you stop for photos and take it all in. We emailed awhile back Charles to make a reservation. This is a MUST if you are coming to do the famous -- not so secret falls kayak and hike. You have the freedom to do your day as you like instead of a tour company. Will definitely come back!!! read more

I was trying to find last minute single kayaks and stumbled upon Scotty's surf. They were super quick to help us out and got us set up quickly and explained out what we needed to know clearly to get us on the river fast. We went around 12 in the afternoon and were given an unlimited time frame for our kayaks. Very helpful and priced decently. Better than the other ones we found around. It was such a great experience through and through. We had previous experience with kayaks, but it was our first time loading them to a car. Even with that, we were able to do it with ease (my boyfriend and I are under 5'5). Definitely recommend this company if you are looking to kayak in Kauai! read more

You just don't get better service than this! We were lucky enough to meet Ryan when we came by to pick up our pre-scheduled kayaks for the Wailua river. He was cheerful, helpful, funny, personable, kind and passionate about the adventure we were about to have. He provided us with some foam blocks so we could load two almost-new decent quality kayaks on top of our soft top convertible rental car; he gave us dry bags, paddles, and life vests. He even told us a story about Scotty's surfing cat (you'll learn it too if you're lucky!) It was SUCH a positive experience, and the Secret Falls were insane (YOU HAVE to summon the courage to go to the wall behind the falls - scary but splendid!), and the fern grotto was worth the side trip. We were looking to do the secret falls kayak + hike but trying to avoid a tour (didn't think it was necessary) and was turned onto this place from a local at Napali Brewing. She was dead on with he recommendation. They allow online booking and then set you up. We had a rental car without anything to affix the kayak too but they were able to lock it on with cam straps. Gave us a map and quick overview of how to get there. By far the cheapest option to do the secret falls hike. Even if you don't have a car it's not that far from the put in so you can just walk it there if need be. read more

THIS PLACE RENTS OUT KAYAKS FOR WAILUA RIVER/SECRET FALLS - don't let the shop name confuse you! THEY ARE ALSO OPENED ALL WEEKEND! IMPORTANT: This is a shop in Kapa'a (a 5 min drive from the start of the kayak) - the default Yelp map graphic on the page is WRONG. It's on the perimeter of Kinipopo Shopping Village (where Passion Bakery Cafe is located). If I could give 5 stars to only 1 spot/experience in all of Kauai, I would give it to Scotty's Surf in a heartbeat. My trip to Kauai was going well, but my experience overall at Scotty's Surf made it memorable and amazing. I have not met people as genuine and caring as Kelsey and Charlie. They are incredible human beings and truly a gift for all of us visitors in Kauai. I decided very last minute that we wanted to squeeze in the Wailua River + Secret Falls Hike (aka you kayak to the start of the hike to the waterfall). All shops were either closed or fully booked up but we got lucky with Scotty's Surf who ARE OPENED ON SUNDAYS (which, pro tip, is the BEST day to do this hike because all other kayak tours are closed this cuts down traffic on river and hike by at least 50%). Anyways, we called 5 minutes on Sunday before they opened (I was desperate) and they miraculously picked up, were able to reserve us a double seater kayak, and the rest is history. A few reasons why you need to rent from here: 1. Upon arrival at the store, they have an ipad hooked onto the big TV and they'll show you exactly how to drive to the parking spot (bc Google Maps has it wrong actually) 2. They have a printed paper map for you to show you how to do the self guided tour down Wailua River - they tell you a few extra special spots too to visit (I am the worst at geography and was nervous about this but the river is literally one straight road and its SUPER straight forward - so don't waste your money on a guided tour if the reason is you don't want to worry about navigation) 3. They lend you a phone case protector, a cooler bag (AND they provide ice packs), and a dry bag (that is like a backpack you can carry) 4. They load the kayak on top of your car for you (and patiently teach you how to do it yourself later when you bring it back) General housekeeping: You can pick up your rental from 10-12am (i think)? and they ask to return it between 2-5pm (with no late fee - you just call them and they can sort you out if you're outside that window). EVERYWHERE in Kauai it's impossible to just rent a kayak and go kayaking. They require tour groups, reservation times, etc etc. Super obnoxious. Well thankfully we went to Scotty's Surf, where they gave us amazing recs for kayaking routes, several hikes, and got us fully set up for a day adventure with a wet pack, hiking sticks, life vests, kayaks, car straps and food and drink recs. This is the place to go for great service, quality gear and people who care about their clients. Totally chill and invested in their clients but not into themselves or any pretentious air about them. Hooked us up same day when so many other places were not willing to do so or had cumbersome registration processes. Spent time mapping and directing even though I knew where to head. Also, super laid back about getting equipment back, gave their cell phones and said text when close and when we returned were so laid back and interested in us having a good time. We rented some Stand Up Paddleboards (SUPs) here and Charlie kindly outfitted our rental vehicle with soft racks, showing me how to secure them safely for the short trip to the Wailua river and the return. Charlie also drew a map to of highlights on the river and when I took out my card to pay, he said "oh, you only pay if you have a great time" and he meant it. Charlie is the man! Great equipment, great pricing, great guidance. We stayed at Kapaa Sands for a week and stopping by Scotty's to see Charlie was part of our morning routine. His knowledge of the island, best areas and times for certain activities were like having a professional concierge! The best part was Charlie is just an all around genuinely stellar human being and went out of his way to make sure our time here was well spent. We rented a 2 person kayak as well as two surfboards, both worked out perfect for our trip. Charlie got us set up with roof mounts for all as well so we could go to the best spots. Only place to rent your equipment to kayak up the Wailua River. We did it self guided which was perfect. Go at our pace. Scotty provided the kayak, dry bag, paddles, life jackets, walking sticks, cooler with ice packs, pad for our toddler to sit on in the kayak. Made it super easy to strap the kayak on our car and head to the river. Scotty gave a great recommendations on which route and what to see first/second. We did as he said what he would do and we felt like we had each spot to ourselves. Really relaxed on when you pick up and drop off all the gear. We called on a Sunday morning and he set us up with a kayak for three, including our four year old, lent us a dry bag and a cooler, and showed us the route to go to the hidden water fall and fern grotto and how to wheel the kayak over to the water. We called this morning because all the tours were sold out.. but this dudes had availability for kayaks! Super easy and friendly staff. We rented a 2 people kayak, they explained to us how to go up to the river, the hike to the Secret Fall and couple more nice spots. They helped loading the kayak onto our rental car. They provide dry bags, cooler, a map.. it was a great experience! Better than a tour! And you just have to be back by 5pm, so you do your own schedule.
