I went in looking for cats, and the lady with purple hair was extremely kind and knowledgeable, she showed me more cats that would fit what I wanted, gave me time to meet with the cats without pressure. She was so helpful and I ended up going home with Buddy Guy, now named Onyxia! The lady very much cared about the cats and knew their interests! I got Onyxia churu and she very much enjoyed it!! I called twice for them to pick up stray dogs and no body came out. They were abandoned on the Paseo for five days. These dogs did not tak any food or water from me so I decided to take them to the shelter my self. Later to find out I had to pay so they can take these poor dogs in ?? Plus the service at the front desk was not as friendly as I expected. read more

I adopted my dog from them last year. She was in a foster home at the time. While in the foster home her foster and I were very concerned with her acting lethargic and refusing to eat. The foster reached out to the KCPP vets on multiple occasions and they just kept saying she's fine and refused to even get her in for a check-up. That's when I decided to just adopt her outright and take her to my own vet. My vets looked at her and told me she had severe liver toxicity and could have died in a matter of a week or two without treatment. This treatment cost upwards of $2K. When I went to KCPP showing them the paperwork and with her foster backing me up that she was sick while in their care that they did nothing about and it should have been something they treated, they completely ghosted me and didn't take any responsibility for her being sick or for helping pay the bills. Turns out she was sick due to medication that the shelter was giving her!! And still nothing. She also had a mass on her leg when I adopted her. I knew it was there. I wanted to wait to get it tested until she was healthy from her liver issue. Of course it turned out to be malignant cancer. Another $1.5K to remove. My vets went over her medical paperwork I was given at adoption and, thrown in the middle in tiny print abbreviations/jargon only a vet would find and know, was where they had tested her lump at the shelter. My vets said since they tested, they 100% knew that it was cancer but purposefully didn't tell me and left it out of her report. Lying and covering it up. Assumedly to again not pay or reimburse me in any way. And lastly (YES THERES STILL MORE!!!), she was heartworm positive at time of adoption and they refused to pay for that treatment either. Apparently they don't do that for any dog anymore?!?!! Which is insane. Their "cure" now is to give them an antibiotic and send them with free heartworm prevention. But this doesn't kill the worms already eating away at the dog's heart. Their Hope is that the antibiotics will starve the worms but that is a very very very low chance of actually getting rid of them. Untreated heartworms WILL kill a dog. Imagine people out there adopting a young otherwise healthy dog that might listen to their bogus "cure" and not go thru with or have the $2K to pay for the real treatment. I absolutely love my dog and wouldn't trade her for the world but I dropped almost $5,000 just on medical bills immediately after adopting her just because KCPP were too cheap and seedy lying to me to do it themselves to save her. I get they're a shelter and don't have a ton of funds but neither do I have that money to just throw around! And their job as an animal shelter is to save and give proper treatment to the animals they have in their care and she would have died due to simple neglect. I have even more issues with them just from a customer service stance and how disorganized they were during the adoption paperwork but honestly that is so back-burner to all the medical issues. But I mean if you still need any more reason... Sorry for the long rant but seriously don't adopt from them!! They clearly don't care about their animals or you. read more

I have adopted two great dogs through KC Pet Project. I will definitely adopt another dog through KC Pet Project.

They let you walk in and adopt your new best friend. Your pet will not be problem free. They are off the streets and not living in the best conditions at the shelter. They do a general check up but they can't screen for everything it's cost prohibitive. The cost of adoption is not just the $60 to walk out of KCPP, but all the costs after. For me, I had to treat for worms, an anal glad issue (as a result of the worms) and a grooming. All in all about $200. I knew going into it that there would be other costs. At the end of the day, wouldn't change him for anything! I love him dearly and look forward to coming home to him. read more

DO NOT ADOPT FROM THEM! Kc pet project does not think it is important to test animals for deadly diseases and diseases that are contagious. They are adopting out cats that have shown signs of sickness to people. They adopted out a kitten to us that had feline leukemia. We had to put down a 4 month old kitten due to their negligence. We are sitting here heart broken with huge vet bills because of them and they refuse to help us. We have asked them multiple times to speak to the director of the facility and they will not let us. All we wanted was to adopt our first kitten and have a great experience. Now we are dealing with vet bills and having to take my 15 year old cat in to find out if she has feline leukemia. If you have adopted a kitten from them in the past 5 months take them to get tested asap. Our kitten came in to their facility with multiple siblings and a mom cat. read more

My daughter and I attempted to stop in to see cats a few weeks ago on a Sunday. We signed in, but prior to entering the large "cat room", we were asked to fill out more paperwork. No problem, but I noticed other couples waiting. Before the next forms... I learned one couple had been waiting over 30 minutes. We were told that all potential adopters needed to be escorted back and it looked as if each group was basically going one at a time. I had a different experience when my parents adopted a cat a few years ago. It seemed normal, no issues. We were told that "mobs of people would be back there" and it "traumatized" the cats. Fine. But there must be a better way. No one thinks that "mobs" of people belong in there at once, but meet in the "sane" middle. Sending a few couples back, so maybe 6-10 people at a time who could move around and view, would bolster adoptions. Keep employees milling around and reminding people to be quiet, etc. The current way is causing less "trauma" and more euthanasia in my opinion, as one potential adopter who didn't have a large chunk of day to stay. We left, we might be back, but his should get changed. The "happy medium" exists. read more

I've had a horrible experience with KC pet project. They gave my dog that was microchipped away. I've always kept her information up to date and had all her records showing proof that she belonged to me. They refused to look at any of my documents. She was stolen from me and the couple that showed up to the shelter only had recent pictures of her. She looked neglected and they still gave her to the people that possibly stole her from me. I've also reached out to make a complaint about an employee/volunteer that bullies myself and people on social media because we shared our experience. I have yet to hear anything about them addressing this issue. read more

Personal note: I avoid the puppy years by adopting my dogs around 2 yrs or older and have missed the needle sharp teeth, the chewing things they shouldn't, and the other craziness of puppies. Horrible experience, Pathetic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Adopted a cat and asked multiple times why he was a owner surrender and I was told nothing or they had no info. Brought him home and he was very curious but not afraid of his new home. As days past i would catch him having litter box issues daily. I called Kc Pet Project and the lady on the phone looked up his complete history and found he was a indoor/outdoor cat and prior owner told the shelter the cat had litterbox issues and staff also saw the issues while in the shelter. They failed to mention any of this when repeatedly asked why he was surrendered or any known issues. the cat is very loving and sweet but sadly can not be a full indoor cat. I had to return him to the shelter. Kc Pet Project you failed this cat so horrible. you care more about what looks best on paper and MOVING animals then the effects it can have on a family and household. Demand a full history of your pet and to see all the intake papers other wise they will lie to you also!!!! Pathetic read more

I have mixed feelings about this place. First the good. the volunteers are knowledgeable. They know what they're doing and they know the individual dogs. The staff and volunteers also actively work with the dogs during their stay in the shelter to give them basic obedience and adaptation skills. They provide the new owner with any information regarding behavioral issues, and help them learn how to handle them. I would say that some of the behavioral issues are much more than I'd take on, but at least they're honest and educate adopters. Now the mediocre. They are very popular. This means long lines to be helped by a volunteer to go see the dogs, and also that dogs are adopted very quickly. Most of the nicest ones are pre-claimed during their five day observation period, so the dog you find might not be listed on the website. You can also end up showing up to see a dog only to find that it's literally in the process of being adopted as you arrive! If you've looked at their website, you'll see that about 90% of their dogs are pits or pit mixes. Pits can of course be nice dogs, but due to breed specific legislation, renting, insurance policies, etc, not everyone can or should adopt a pit. Also as a PSA - take a look at some of those limitations before you get a pit to make sure you'll be able to keep it. All that said - you will end up with a healthy dog that's been appropriately vetted, and have at least some idea of its behavior/personality. More than you can say for many other shelters/rescues sadly. read more

Called to check in on an older dog that I found wondering outside in 100 degree weather. She had protruding ribs, abscesses on her stomach, fleas/ticks, and 2 holes in her head like she was burned by something. I gave her lots of pets, dog food, water and shade before I called KC pet project to check her microchip. The sweet girl had an owner but unfortunately they never responded to the calls/voicemails that the KC pet project animal control left them. He said he would try to drop her off at their home and off they went. I called the next morning to check on her and they said they just did intake on her so there's no update. I waited 2 days to call again for an update except now all the lady told me was "unfortunately this dog is no longer in our care" ???? Is she safe? Is she healthy again? Was she reunited with her owners? Is she even still alive? All I got after that was "I can't disclose that information" You can't tell me if the dog is alive and safe? I am strongly convinced, like another review said, that they killed this dog behind the scenes and didn't want anyone to know. Extremely suspicious and sad. This company needs to be investigated. read more

I have a love/hate with KC PET. two things I love they ask questions but not the right ones it seems some I heard were good ones, about it for adoptions and 2 marketing amazing at it!! But seems like the focus is too much about that. I heard a staff member talking about how she was eh about letting this chick get a dog for reasons but letting her anyways. I was like yeah she has a 4 year old NO. What a mess, I house sit for people I know dogs and questions to ask when to say no. I don't like is you can't just walk through anymore like there old building and when the new building first opened and I love the new building and before Covid you could just walk through too and I felt like it was less busy/chaotic and less pressure! you have to go through hoops and wait. I wish they'd just have a limit of how any people can go back there like 10 at a time with volunteers always walking around watching, so everyone is safe. The pressure of picking a couple or few dogs to see is higher psychologically to impulse buy because you feel bad and more likely to adopt a dog you didn't want cause you "feel bad". I'm glad, I haven't done that yet and know how to say no thank you and not feel that bad because use my head. Kcpet isn't the only shelter that I have a love hate either with appointments only and how they do things. So take it with a grain of salt with what I say. But the biggest thing I HATE is THERE ANIMAL CONTROL!!!! I get it, probably short staffed! But they said they'd come in between 24 hours after I called the second time about my bite report/case on the phone was done, I had to call they didn't email that or tell me that, till I asked them!! I was like HELL NO!! I had a dog bit me over 10 times over again and had to risk driving the dog to them that was resource guarding my car and show them how bloody I was, for them to take it seriously they did once I said look at me and they were shocked and nice cause they saw me balling!! 2-4 level bites, 7 reported I had. Once they saw that they took it seriously and took care of it and were so nice (I love those people that helped me.) But the people on the phone and how they do things on the phone are to slow!! there's no sense of urgency to them idk they need to be a better protocol. Better questions asked More details they need. Do better cause I was 2 levels away from death!!! This wasn't a Nip. They should've ask if they're blood, did the animal try to hang on to you and bite the same area, 'cause yes too all of that for me!! But they didn't. I told a lot of people how much I dislike animal control and I didn't know it was kcpet which just tell me kcpet owner is MEH and I'm not to happy still and why would I want to support place like this? A MESS the poor dogs and peolle that's are really trying to help. I'm not trying to be mean. But my life is important. How they do adoptions is dumb and "trying to do it trendy" is not working clearly from other reviews. This wasn't.a dog I got from kcpet this was a dog I got and had no idea how evil it was. I've house sat for 7 years never been afraid of a dog or bit, I do Germans, pits, labs etc never been bit. It seemed neurological. so not the dogs fault. Horrible people, we took a young stray cat in there after being told over the phone that they would take him and put him up for adoption. Drove all the way out there and was told he would be better off on the street. Better off on the street in the dead of winter? The woman in the lobby was rather rude as well. I cannot believe that a rescue shelter would say a cat would be better off outside in freezing temperatures than being in the shelter. These people do not care about animals apparently, their motivations must be something entirely different than the welfare of animals, to think that is true. read more

Came here a couple times before finally adopting. The process is not organized AT ALL. I initially came during one of their "adoption sale" type things so we expected more chaos (obv). Your experience is ENTIRELY dependent on the staff member helping you. The first time I came the lady kept bringing dogs that went against my EXPLICIT restrictions. (I'm not allowed to have a pup over 40lbs per my residence) She brought out about 4 dogs that were too big and still had more growing to do . But what REALLY upset me was her bringing out a dog who was FINALLY under 40 lbs but it was because he was LITERALLY skin and bones and had the audacity to say "he'll just gain a couple more pounds". That was BEYOND bizarre, thankfully I'm not a fool and ended up going home with no pup that day. Came back about a week later on a "normal" day it was literally less put together than the event day I initially went to. There is literally NO order , they tell you to "stand by these balloons" , we were skipped MULTIPLE times and waiting about an extra 45 min for NO REASON. BUT, this staff member who helped me was a MILLION times better than the other . She understood what we were looking for and was actually making an effort to look with us , as opposed to the other staff member who told us to "just look on the website" ... well there was only 2 dogs on there that matched what we needed and I KNOW y'all don't update it regularly! ANYWAYS , we met this wonderful pup who you see here , they said she was a "code blue" which basically means high energy but she was literally SO CHILL. She was on trazodone which we assumed was the reason she wasn't showing her CRAZY side. BUT we've had her for over a month off trazodone and she is SO SO SO CHILL (does have her crazy moments like all dogs) but they were SO WRONG ABOUT HER ! Overall the process was simple enough and I ended up with an amazing dog which is why my review is 2 stars but other than that I'd give it a ZERO. Because there is CLEAR neglect and lack of training so I can only imagine what goes on behind those doors, because I know it's not love and snuggles. read more

KC Pet Project is an amazing local organization filled with passionate people dedicated to saving animals lives. I've had the fortunate and humbling experience of fostering dogs for them for over a year now, and I would highly recommend any dog lovers consider doing the same. Sara G., the dog foster coordinator is very attentive and truly cares about finding the right temporary home for all the pets she crosses paths with. The vet staff on site is also incredibly flexible and helpful with anything from renewing prescriptions to surgery follow up. I was also lucky enough to adopt my best pal Knox from here, and he himself was lucky enough to be cared for through the foster program in his time here. This is our third kitten/cat we've adopted from KC Pet Project. The first 2 were sisters that came home with worms and an intestine problem that had to be treated with antibiotics it was so bad, she couldn't hold her poop and there was blood in it. They said she just had allergies which was a complete lie and still let her get adopted before a full check to see what it waa. Which ya know stuff happens those things are missed I get they have a lot of animals. However this is our new cat Leo we took in for his wellness check and this is what his mouth looked like before the vet did any dental work! He wouldn't even let the vet open his mouth so poor guy had to be put out to figure out what was wrong. The vet had to pull 7 of his teeth it was so severe and kcpp wouldn't do anything but tell me if I wanted to surrender him back to the shelter then they could take care of it then and have someone else adopt him! WHAT?!?! If this is how they are helping animals this is disturbing. Leo was in so much pain and the lady on the phone truly didn't care, clearly no one took the time to make sure he wasn't injured. I want to get the word out there so maybe they will start being more thorough or maybe people will check their animals over before adopting or literally anything to keep this from happening more and more. It is inhumane how Leo was treated or should I say lack of treatment. Thankful for Loving Care Animal health that took amazing care of Leo! Also kcpp told us he was 5 when he's actually about 10.... So get your animals checked out by someone who truly cares if you chose to adopt from there. I would give them a 0 star if I could! read more

I adopted two kittens from the whiskers cat café, which was a great experience at first however one of the kittens had a significant neuter complication. Kansas City Pet Project boasts covered vet care for 14 days post adoption included in the $95 adoption fee. I contacted them regarding a firm, knot found on his neuter site the day I brought him home 6/18. Once contacted they were unconcerned even though he was 2 weeks post neuter, I contacted them again because the site broke open and was draining pus and blood just three days later 6/21. Their response was that the site "is normal and looks great," I work in healthcare and have prior medical knowledge that this should not just be ignored, especially with a kitten that doesn't have a full immunity yet. After the kitten's abscess being completely ignored and KCPP neglected to provide care or antibiotics I found a private vet that agreed the kitten needed treatment, if KCPP wouldn't treat the kitten she would. She called KCPP on my behalf as the medication can cost upwards of $50 and Heather Kennedy DVM berated my vet over the phone, saying that they never said that the abscess was normal (email attached of them saying it was normal) and was offended that someone pointed out that they were refusing to treat the kitten. She was only concerned with the allegation that they were "blowing the owner off," and had no regards for the cat or treating it to get it back to healthy. I had to bring my kitten w an open wound to the clinic 30 minutes away potentially introducing more infection. The vet, Heather Kennedy, came out and instead of explaining the situation immediately confronted me why I thought KCPP was ignoring my concerns. She gave me antibiotics with another prescribing vet's name on it and said that the cat didn't actually need them and that it would cause bacterial resistance, but also said that the kitten's abscess needed to be cleaned out as much as possible so that more bacteria doesn't infect it and cause another abscess. The point of an antibiotic is to stop infection. She continued to support that an open wound right next to his rectum/urinary tract where he squats in a litter box and has access to lick did not need antibiotics or any treatment. She continued to contradict herself multiple times, it was shocking listening to her continue to give so much misinformation. Heather Kennedy has too big of an ego to say she was wrong or admit fault. She is unprofessional, completely out of touch with reality and the realm of medicine in general. It is obvious she has little concern with actually treating animals but causing drama with owners and spreading misinformation. Last but certainly not least the antibiotics she prescribed are for adult cats and have shown to cause cartilage malformation proven in numerous animal studies. There are multiple other antibiotics she could've chosen that are a much safer option for kittens. KCPP wants to take advantage of people that don't have access to vet care or medical knowledge. I was told on three different occasions that the surgical complication was "normal" "looked great" and was of "no concern." Kim in the office even said over the phone "KCPP's goal is to help as many animals find a home so that owners can seek out private care on their own," so KCPP's mission is to adopt out kittens from their shelters in mass under the impression that they will help support the pet if they do get sick from the shelter. As an FYI I absolutely love my kitten and will continue to care for him as much as needed but want to warn anyone else adopting from here that KCPP has no regard for clean practices and just want to get out quantity of animals to people and disregard any sickness following adoption caused by the shelter. This is an extremely predatory practice and I'm glad I had the knowledge and vet support to see through their gaslighting and neglect to care for sick pets from their shelter, owners suffer the consequences w their pets being put through this and then getting stuck w the bill. read more

After spending 14 lonely days quarantined alone with COVID, I was pretty sure I was ready for a pet. I went to their Zona Rosa adoption center, and their employee Jessica was super helpful. I have never had a cat so I was nervous about it. I appreciate her spending so much time talking to me about so many "what's ifs." The adoption center was clean. Stocked with everything I needed to come home with a cat. I didn't like the unscented litter I picked, but there could've been scented options, I just grabbed a random one without checking. The girls working were up taking dogs in and out if they weren't helping people. Not sure I saw them sit down until it was time to do the adoption paperwork. I came into KC Pet Project on Elwood ready to purchase a pittie. Little I know that they won't even help me. Not sure if it was because I am white, old, or what but I walked right up to the help desk face to face with the lady. She leans around me and ask the person behind if she could help them. After the 2nd time I asked her if I was invisible slammed my hands on the table and left and I didn't even get to look at any dogs. I am heading back over to Great Plaines SPC they are very friendly, polite, and just helpful in general. I do not have patience or time to deal with incompetent people. My fiancé and I adopted Dixie, a four year old coon hound, about 3 months ago, through the KC Pet Project. She has been a wonderful addition to our family!!! That being said, dealing with the KC pet project in regards to her preexisting medical conditions has been a fight that we were not expecting to undertake. We were aware of the challenges that we faced when we adopted her but were assured on multiple occasions that her care would be continued with the KC Pet Project until her eye was healed and her mastitis rectified. Scheduling appointments for her treatments has been a nightmare and now come to find out, her "continued care" is in fact NOT "guaranteed"! Which is the complete opposite of what we were told at the time of adoption The staff clearly doesn't care about the health of our pet (or others judging by the other reviews I'm know seeing) and have told us as of today that we will need to seek a private vet for any care moving forward. Although you might find the perfect pet through KC Pet Project, make sure that it's 100% healthy before taking it home! Or get ready for a battle to get this establishment to keep its promises!! read more

We did have some delays in picking up dogs, but that seemed due to understaffing of the Dog Day Out program. I hope KCPP gets more support for it since it's a stellar program to have available. It was so fun to get to take a dog for a day/weekend and give them quiet time and attention. It felt like we were helping by taking pictures and writing descriptions for the dogs' adoption pages. The staff matched our interests and activity levels to the dog we fostered, and let us know in advance of any challenges they had noticed. I highly recommend adopting from KC Pet Project!! We adopted a sweet pup who had heartworm when he was found by KCPP so the KCPP vet clinic remained our point of contact and hub for his healing even after we adopted him! Their help ensured that his heartworm wasn't a barrier to us being able to adopt, and their instructions and resources were instrumental in getting the heartworms out. We also were able to ask the KCPP Behavior Help Line for advice after adoption!! Our pup had a rough patch of adjusting to our home -- as is common with adoptions, which we didn't know at the time. The KCPP Behavior Help contact responded to my request for help with a thorough, thoughtful email with lots of advice and recommendations for further reading. It's amazing to me that so many resources are available through KCPP in order to make sure dogs are given the best chance of settling in to a home so it can become a forever home. I have to leave this review for the employee that assisted with my appointment in the cat adoption center yesterday at 1pm, I wish I knew her name unfortunately it slipped my mind. I had a very difficult time and much regret involving surrendering a pet days prior. I came back to the shelter to check on them, and ended up asking about reclaiming after many days of thought over circumstances, and most of all feeling a part of our home was now missing without them. This employee was completely empathetic from the start I was emotional and had tears she comforted me and discussed the entirety of my situation. I was unsure if they would even allow me to reclaim my pet after a surrender and they held no judgement and reunited my pet and I back together. I came to adopt a kitten for my girlfriend as a kind gesture! she was so happy to have a new kitty in her home & i think her little home was finally complete! a day later the cat is constantly vomiting bile & won't eat drink or anything! we took her back to see if they could do a check up they said "there's definitely something obstructing her bowles!" so we were going to do surguery after we found out this would be thousands of dollars for a cat we just got we thought kcpp would help! no they did everything to make sure this cat didn't come back to me! they made sure to not take blame for anything so now the kitty was stripped from our home & im not allowed to get her back after weeks of them not helping me & making me feel at fault for this poor kitten i just adopted! ill never refer this place never will be here again & i feel for the MANY other family's this has happened too! read more

This place is UNCARING. An unaltered unchipped kitten has been dumped near busy street. It's very scared but very social. Checked everywhere for owners, but no one claiming. Took to KC Pet Project and they said bring it back home and redump it cause it's healthy so insisted it had owner. Since its not hurt or sick and is very sweet it will hopefully find a home. My argument, it's too cold outside and getting colder. It is living under various dumpsters in complex. Their response...well, we don't bring in squirrels do we? That is seriously how much they care. This place disgusts me. A cat, especially a loving cat, is not the same as a squirrel. This is not a feral cat but does not have a home...if it did they tossed it.
