We were extremely disappointed with this animal shelter. It took an act of congress just to go see the animals and you couldn't really interact with them without signing your life away. Some of the folks there were helpful but others seemed like they didn't want you to be there. No help in the dog area at all. It's like you are at an outside mall that only allows window shopping. Not a friendly place that would make me want to adopt an animal. I do feel bad for the animals there. I'm hoping they pay more attention to them than the people coming into the shelter to adapt them. read more

Was trying to find a lost dogs owner while waiting out side one of the female employees walking a large dog with a muzzle yelled at me to hold the dog I had on a tight leash as her dog was pulling her around while staring me down as she walked away. Interactions with the rest of the staff was great but her was terrible. Hope she doesn't deal with the public on a regular basis. read more

I tried to adopt a dog today. Email and phone calls could not be returned! I tried again at 2:00PM. The girl that answered asked how could she help me, I asked if Ceasar was available, she lightly laughed and said he is in the process of being adopted now. Had she told me Ceasar was available I would have made arrangements to adopt and been there within an hour! Great Plains SPCA is a fantastic no-kill animal shelter that quietly provides adoptions of dogs and cats rescued from across the Kansas City metro area. The Johnson County-based member of the big 3 that includes Wayside and KC Pet Project. We found our rescue puppy here and couldn't be happier with the process and location. Very accommodating for visiting with kids with spotless private rooms to socialize. We appreciated the overnight hold option where you pay (donate) a nominal amount to not feel rushed and ensure the whole family could sleep on it before coming back the next day for the homecoming. The shelter is often overshadowed by Wayside Waifs, which also does a great job, however this facility and team are excellent for both dogs and cats. The Merriam location also has a small retail store that you can gear up new adoptions. As you would expect, adoption fees (donations!) are much higher for puppies and kittens than the less cuddly teens and pre-teens. Note: In prior years they offered a veterinary office that was open to the public, but those services are now reserved only for the in-house clientele (ahem - bob barker...). THEY COULD HAVE TOLD THE TRUTH. The " 5 month old puppy" I adopted at Great Plains was actually nearly 2 years old. There is no mistaking the dog's full set of adult teeth with slight tartar, pointed out my vet The dog had been at the shelter for a long time, so everyone knew it's age. Even the animal's records showed it was the same weight since its given date of birth. I saw this when I got the records Although the dog won't be the size we hoped for, it is a dear little soul who was left behind. This kind of dishonesty makes me question the integrity of this organization. The little dog's ribs and hip bones were showing when we brought it home. Poor innocent dogs. read more

I am always kind of shocked when I see one star reviews for non-profit organizations. Especially ones that save thousands of animals lives every year. The people that work/volunteer at non-profits aren't in it for the money but exclusively in it to help animals and that's exactly what this place does!! The staff is exceptional. Some shelters kinda pull at your heart strings because the animals are in tiny/dirty kennels with little blankets or toys but this is not the case here. Every animal gets multiple toys, blankets sometimes even cozy beds and plenty of enrichment (treats,peanut butter filled longs etc.) some animals even have their own room! It's obviously not ideal that any animal is in a shelter but while they are at this place they are at least SO well taken care of! The volunteers are amazing and go out of their way to use their free time to help enrich the lives of these amazing animals and it shows! The facility is nearly spotless which anybody with pets knows is difficult to maintain let alone with over 50 different animals! Shelters tend to be sorta depressing but this place is so welcoming, bright and open it's hard not to leave with a dog or two! read more

**warning -- shameless pull-at-the-heartstrings plug** I love cats. So I'm predisposed to be a sucker for a cute little kitten. But when I learned about a kitten and her two sisters who were dumped on the side of the road, left for dead, found covered with fleas and open wounds with maggots in them ... I was reduced to a pool of jelly. And that's how I came to adopt Punkin, who was rescued by a wonderful person at No More Homeless Pets in Kansas City. This high-volume, affordably priced spay and neuter clinic works with volunteers, veterinarians, and local shelters to promote pet adoption with the ultimate goal of making KC a no-kill city by 2012. Punkin was already spayed when I got her at 10 weeks. I've always spayed my cats, but NMHPKC is ensuring that people who otherwise wouldn't or couldn't spend the money can still have pets that aren't out overpopulating the planet. If you love puppies, NMHPKC rescues them too. This is a bit of a long review, but I do encourage you to read it. I am in no way saying not to adopt from this facility as these animals need homes too, but please just be aware when you do. We adopted a puppy back in February. I knew the exact one I wanted from the litter and had pictures, but when we went to get him out of the kennel with the other puppies, the employee I was with didn't have a chip scanner, so we went based off the pictures. Not a big deal, we were pretty sure and this was just the meet-and-greet so who who cares, right? During the checkout, we were going through his vaccination records and they couldn't determine if he had one of of his shots. They think he did, but it was highlighted that he still needed it. They said, "don't worry about it". At little concerning. An hour later, I left with my new guy, realizing they never scanned his chip. They updated his information in the chip, all the time assuming I had the correct dog with the correct information. The night we brought our puppy home, he started coughing. A horrible hacking sound like he had something in his throat. I know SPCA offers vet services for newly adopted pets, but it was so bad he needed to be seen immediately and we didn't know how long the wait would be. We took him in to find out he had bordatella (kennel cough) and pneumonia. I also had my vet check his chip information since that was overlooked in the adoption process. My puppy was medically cleared to go home at the time of adoption. How is that possible? He was also kept in a kennel with his litter mates so it wouldn't be too surprising if the other puppies were sick, too. And that brings us to yesterday. My mother placed a holding fee on a puppy from a litter two months ago. She received an email saying her puppy was ready to pick up and when she went to get her, the puppy had been adopted to another family. We love our puppy and he is a happy and healthy guy. At the end of the day, if you're looking for a pet, please adopt. If you're looking to adopt from this facility, please prepare yourself. I would recommend taking your new friend immediately to your vet. And please document all correspondence with their team. read more

Took my dog to the SPCA in Merriam Ks for his annual exam and shots he also had blood drawn. They said he was good to go and that his blood work was better than perfect but less than 24 hours later he collapsed on the floor and died just out of the blue...I've contacted them to ask if they would do an autopsy to find out exactly what happened since he was fine in thier offices the day before and was told no by the attending vet and that the cost of that would be on me. So I called a couple other veterinarian offices to see what protocol they would take and of course they both said if he was fine just 24 hours before in their office that they would do an autopsy to make sure it wasn't something they caused at his office visit... So tell me why does the attending vet at the Spca in Merriam KS feel it's not necessary? read more

I was going to adopt a calico kitten that my friend was fostering. Took my 5 year old daughter to meet the kitten and she instantly fell in love. Was talking about this kitten coming home for a month straight. I sent an email to confirm my intention of adopting Callie. I paid and placed a hold fee on Callie. The foster family told the shelter I was going to adopt Callie. I bought all the items necessary to adopt the kitten. Was notified by my friend the kitten was ready to adopt and I went in as soon as I could that day. Despite paying a hold fee, the shelter adopted Callie to another owner. The shelter refused to call the family they had Callie adopted to 30 minutes prior to me walking in the door and even explaining the situation. They rushed me out the door when I was trying to look at other cats. They gave me another foster family's info to look at another calico and while I was trying to set it up with the foster family and I had an anxiety attack due to the situation they then tried to accuse me of not being fit enough to meet the calicos. They were extremely rude in that situation. Honestly the only solution that would have solved it, would have to call the family who had adopted Callie 30 minutes prior to me walking in the door and let them decide what to do due to their mistake to give my daughter a chance at having the cat she was supposed to have this week. I asked to talk to the CEO and was refused access as well. Completely unacceptable. read more

I am a firm believing in rescuing animals but this shelter has really left a negative impression with how they operate. There was a dog brought in months ago that was pregnant. I was interested in the dog and soon to be puppies story and found the foster parent on social media to follow their story. I very soon fell in love with these puppies, watching them develop their spunky personalities. I knew I wanted one of these puppies to join our family and was hoping I had the opportunity to do so. The day I saw they would be coming to the shelter my boyfriend called and was informed no one had called or filled out a form for them. We would be the first ones in line. He went immediately to the shelter before they even were opened and filled out an application. He later called to check in and another associate said it would be managers decision. He then called the following day to check on the puppies surgery and see if there was an update. He was informed, very rudely, they would let him know when they make a decision. Adoption day comes, they post it on Facebook they are available for adoption and to call or come in if interested. He then calls to be informed they went with someone else. Note, we have already filled out forms with this shelter and passed background checks, so it wasn't that. It's very disheartening knowing you could be meeting a puppy and fill out the forms and go to pick it up and they decided to give it to someone else. Knowing that is how this shelter operates, I will never be adopting from them or encouraging anyone else too. Sad for any animal that ends up there as they are the ones being punished for bad experiences. read more

I adopted my puppy from Great Plains SPCA back in January. I was very pleased with how everything happened. The staff was friendly and helpful from the start, which was nice compared to other shelters I've visited where the staff was the opposite. They seemed very enthusiastic about their job and finding a home for one of their animals. The facility was clean and the dogs seemed well taken care of. I plan to adopt all of my future animals from Great Plains SPCA. I also take my puppy to the veterinary clinic here too. I've always had a good experience and he is always excited to be there and loves the staff. read more

Overall the facility is nice and clean, but when we Arrived and walking in, a man working there told us we needed mask but they would have some for us inside. When we got inside we were treated very rudley for not wearing mask, and asked for one. They told us to get out, while outside another employee told us to come back another day. We explained we were looking for a puppy for a gift to dad From mom. She told us they wouldn't adopt to us because they don't do gifts. When we tried to explain that we were just looking and mom would come and adopt, she then proceed to continue to say to come back with the mom, because once again would not adopt to us. The lady wouldn't not let us explain what we were doing and was very rude about it. read more

I volunteer at Great Plains and can honestly say, they are very caring with every pet they do receive. Wonderful employees and their main objective is to have every pet go to the right family. They also do much for the community, providing food to families for their pets that are stretched financially. I would encourage to volunteer here or another shelter, you will get more back than you give. read more

I'm sure they mean well, but these people are terrible in comparison to every other affordable veterinary clinic we've been to. Every time I call, I'm on hold for 30-45 minutes despite being the second or third person in the queue. We went there to check our dog for fleas, since he had terrible itching, and the vet told us he had none. We examined him a few hours later and he was infested. They charged us for allergy medicine that we didn't ask for, and didn't work. And finally, after telling us that we could have an online pet prescription company fax in a request for Nexgard and they would authorize it, the company sent us an email saying it was denied. I wouldn't recommend this veterinary clinic to anyone. read more

Me and my mother had gotten my our dog Daisy an Pekingese shih tzu mix we got her back in June of 2013 after our other dog Jazzie a mini poodle passed away in march of that year.it was sad cause we got Jazzie back in 2010. (we already had another dog before Jazzie) so after she passed it was very hard for us. So when my Mom heard that they were having an adopting thing at one of there events we went NOT PLANING ON ADOPTING THAT DAY we fell in love with Daisy she had so much hair and was only 6 months old. We had to have her. she was already fixed, had her shots, and micro-chipped and everything. Now we've had her for about 2 and a half years now and she's so playful and cute. we love her. I defiantly would recommend getting a dog (or cat) from here! read more

I called another day & asked about a dog. Someone was interested in it & was coming in the next day. And then - I was told that there were no appointment times available for the next week. LOVE this place, and for so many reasons! (hence the long review) Short review: Great prices on medical needs. Great staff, vets included. Great place to adopt a pet and to buy supplies for your pet. Long of it... When we adopted our pup off KCK's death row, we got a complimentary neuter at Heartland SPCA. They did a great job with his neuter, and we were also able to get all his vaccines (kennel cough, distemper/parvo, & rabies) and a microchip for $50. Fifty bucks!!! Deal! Right after we adopted our dog, we also had to schedule an urgent appointment for his kennel cough. Although our dog was terrified of most people, especially men, the male vet and female tech did a great job with him. They examined him in the garage both to keep him isolated and to reduce his anxiety. I really appreciated that. Price breakdown: exam ($15), medication ($16), and heartworm meds for 6 months ($24). Incredibly affordable! When our dog developed a limp, I immediately called Heartland. Unfortunately, they had a month wait, but they put me on the waitlist since they have daily cancellations. Two days later we still didn't have an appointment. By then, we were a nervous wreck, and thus, we scheduled an appointment with another vet in the community. Forty five bucks later we had minimal information and no medication. The vet didn't find anything and thought it was a pulled muscle. We were told to come back in a few days if it didn't get better. She was not very friendly, and didn't even introduce herself to us. When we asked about pain management, she said she didn't want to give him anything yet. Two days later, his limp was worse, but we were thankfully able to get in at Heartland. We saw Dr. Wilcox. What a breath of fresh air. She was very nice and thorough. She knew her manners and introduced herself and the vet tech. Unlike the other vet, Dr. Wilcox was able to find our pet's injury. She immediately prescribed anti-inflammatories and seemed miffed that the previous vet didn't. She also thoroughly discussed a treatment plan for our pup, and we felt confident/relieved. What a great experience, and it was only $29 for both the exam and meds!!! Within a day or two, our dog's limp was markedly better, and we were breathing easy again. Every time I've been here, the staff and volunteers have been great. There's one person who is not as enthusiastic, but all the rest are wonderful. They love on my dog so much, and make me feel very welcomed. Now, that's just the vet clinic....We also popped into the new adoption center, which is amazing. It is brand new and very nice. The pups have lovely glass rooms that are seemingly sound proof. The dogs in there seemed peaceful. The smaller dogs are in rooms with innovative kennel styles that allow them to run around and see their visitors. There are also visitation rooms for you to meet your next furry friend. The facility was impressively clean (and minimal odor) for an animal shelter. They have outdoor play areas where the dogs get to go often. They also had lots of volunteers walking the pups too. If you're not looking for a new pet, then check out their pet store. They have tons of great toys for your pets at great prices. Plus, the proceeds go to the SPCA. So drop your Petco/Petsmart card in the trash, and come here to help a great organization! read more

had passed away in the beginning of November. She had a cat for about 15 years that she had left. I decided to take it for her. Instead of them putting her down. We get her and she has locks through out her body. Took her up to the great Plains SPCA off Antioch. And they said they did a well cat exam, they cut some of the locks out and assured us they checked her all out. We took her to get groomed and after we had paid SPCA. 300$,and pet smart the grooming place told us there were 4 things we had to do for her health before we could get her groomed. Then paid them 200$ to get her nail cut and treat an ear infection. A well cat exam is a check up on anythi. I paid 300$ for them to do nothing. I am very thankful for Great Plains SPCA. I bring many ferals here for neutering and the price is very, very reasonable. We do TNR, Trap, Neuter, Release. I'm sorry that some folks have not had a good experience here with the front desk. But, I will say this for them. They are so busy and if they seem abrupt, I think they are just very harried and trying to get so many people and animals served. I urge everyone to support this organization and they are great people who will help you with your pet or with strays. read more

We adopted our dog there this past weekend. The volunteers there were super helpful, there was a man there that worked there who was extremely nice too and helped when I brought our current dog up to meet the possible new one. Everything was great until I was handed over at the front desk. The person at the front desk was so unfriendly, seemed like she couldn't want to be anywhere less. Since our new puppy had not been neutered yet, I had to bring him back in today after leaving a deposit. Great, no biggie, except for the fact that no one at all seemed to know what was going on with the refund of the deposit even though I'd talked to a couple people throughout the day assuring me it would be taken care of. I left without knowing what was going on with it because the person who was in charge of that had already left. They did call me later in the evening to get it straightened out, which I appreciate, but it would have been nice to know when I left. All in all, the adoption facility is nice, and we've now had a dog spayed and a dog neutered there with minimal problems. It just seems that some who work there could be a bit more in the know or a lot more friendly. read more

We attempted to adopt a dog at this location. We put a secondary hold on a dog and they didn't explain to us that the first hold could be extended. We placed our hold when there was 3 hours left on the first hold. The SPCA was rude, unprofessional, uncaring and it seems like all they care about is money. read more

I'm going to try and make this as short and sweet as possible, as I am still very much in a fragile state from having to put my beloved dog down yesterday. The vet herself and her assistant, Leslie were truly sweeter than we could ask for. The vet was honest, didn't try to mooch money and was very good with the dog. No one rushed us to make a decision and they did their best to make the situation tolerable for us. The front desk staff left little to be desired, however. Not very attentive, somewhat rude. We had two pets cared for this week at Great Plains Veterinary Care Center. We were thrilled with our experiences. From the front desk to thorough exams; outstanding veterinary and technician teams, exceptional surgical care, fair pricing and caring post visit follow up calls - Great Plains was amazing! Our dog was treated for GI complications and was feeling better within 24 hours of care. Our cat had a dental procedure and teeth extracted and was treated with care and compassion for a very scared kitty. They are clearly dedicated to improving the lives of pets and their owners. I'm so glad i found this place. They are so much more reasonable with their prices. I was able to get all my dogs vaccines (rabies, ddvap, and bordatella, along with a heartworm test for $98. Plus my dog had an ear infection and I only had to pay $125 total for everything. My old Vet would have charged me twice that. The staff was very friendly and courteous and the facilities were clean . I am definitely making them my permanent place for Vet care. Plus it helps out with the life saving work they do in saving rescue animals. I love this place ! read more
