I adopted a sweet pit bull mix from here but the whole time i felt very judged and the staff was very rude and acted like because of my age i wasn't competent enough to take care of a dog, even thought my family has adopted/ fostered dogs my whole life. Every single person i interacted with during the adoption process was extremely judgmental and rude to my boyfriend & I. They RELUCTANTLY allowed us to complete the adoption process they watched us on the security cameras in the parking lot and when the puppy accidentally jumped out of my arms they came out to yell at us to not put the puppy on the ground even though it was clearly not intentional. I never write yelp reviews but this whole experience was honestly appalling, I will never come here again. P.S. Came in today to look at bringing home a new fur baby, while the front desk staff was friendly, kind and very welcoming - the staff in the cat room was VERY off putting. They hovered over us like car salesmen and instead of telling us the good qualities of each kitten, they gave us nothing but negatives. The kitten we were hoping to meet based off the description online...we were told was nothing of the sort...maybe that's true and the information online is wrong. However, one volunteer got semi aggressive with my cat loving son who said something about holding one of the adult cats. Needless to say, we walked out. So disappointing. read more

Extremely disappointed and heartbroken with the way we were treated. For two weeks we worked with Wayside Waifs to adopt a dog, first called to inquire about the dog. Second was put in contact with the foster mom (who was wonderful). Third we had two meeting we her and the dog, the first was almost two hours and the second was over an hour.at that time we decided to take her. Third arrangements were made to pick her up at the shelter. We drove over 100 miles to go to Wayside Waifs to pick her up and she wasn't there. the foster mom had gotten sick and could not bring her in. understandable. But according to the coordinator that was the last day of her hold so she was going to be placed back on the website as being available for adoption. What? Not true we had another day before her hold was to go off. She was listed without my permission. After several calls and messages i was told someone else had taken her while still on OUR hold, within that two-hour interval. No apologies just we will have other dogs for adoption. No way would I want to adopt from Wayside Waif. The adoption staff was rude and extremely pushy insisting that she was needed to go back on available to adopt list. Wouldn't suggest trying to drop off a stray dog that you've found if their admissions office is not "open" -- even if there may be 10 other people working there at the time (including people actually inside the admissions office!) They are not helpful either in finding an alternative suitable location for said dogs (they simply shrug their shoulders and say their sorry). Recently adopted our 3 month old baby Australian cattle dog and the process was definitely 5 stars worthy! The staff was so helpful and so nice and they take care of the animals there very well. What was like 0 stars worthy was the hand sanitizer at Violette's desk. It was like this aloe texture and it smelt and felt horrible. Like it wouldn't rub in at all and it was sticky after like 5 minutes of rubbing. She did make up for it though. She offered her Victoria's Secret hand sanitizer instead. This so-called rescue who should be returning dogs to their rightful owners, has rehomed a dog that was stolen from a girl in Oklahoma while she was in the hospital. When she got out she managed to track her dog down three states away in Missouri to wayside Waifs who refuse to give her dog back claiming they had already rehomed him with a family. The police contacted wayside Waifs letting them know the dog was stolen and they didn't care. They're not returning her dog. He's a service dog she suffers from a medical condition and he has been with her since he was a baby for six full years of his life she was all He's known. Now he was ripped away from his home has no idea where she is I'm sure has been traumatized on top of it just as she has been and wayside Waifs wants to go and add insult to injury and inform her that because she can't have children he's probably better off in the home with kids. That is utterly repulsive and disgusting for anybody to say to another human being for any reason. Shame on you Way side waves for being such a pathetic excuse for a rescue. There are plenty of animals out there that need homes as I'm certainly sure you're aware that for you to keep one from an owner that is done as much to locate her dog as Courtney has done she deserves to have her dog back. The fact that you would keep a loving animal from a loving owner is absolutely disgusting. Not only that but your treatment of Courtney and many people who have called on her behalf to request that her dog be returned makes me wonder how you treat animals when nobody's looking. Forcing somebody to have to pay an attorney to hunt you down and file a court hearing and then delay that hearing saying you haven't had enough time to prepare is absolutely petty and unnecessary let her have her damn dog back because in the end the judge is going to rule that it's her dog because it's considered property and if you don't know how the laws work it doesn't matter if you run the clock out at this point that the case was filed beforehand and you are going to have to have the dog returned. Brought home kitty number 3. This was our second visit to this shelter. Our first time was a couple of years ago, when I accompanied my grams to adopt her two little black kittens. We were so impressed by the facility that it was a no brainer to return when we were ready for another feline. The shelter is pretty hidden, lots of acreage surrounding the place, which creates a peaceful and serene persona. A staff member greeted us at the front door when we arrived and other staff readily asked us if they could assist us. When we got to the kitty kennel section, there were even more staff to help us find a little boy in an all female kitty household. They were super attentive to our needs and knowledgeable on all of the newly arrived kittens. My partner picked out a little Siamese Tabby, and only 2 months old. A baby! No Compassion with Pet Memorials I called this morning when they opened and asked the receptionist if they still offered euthanasia and pet cremations. She told me yes and she would give the person who ran the department a message to contact me a.s.a.p. I was told she would be in around 10:00am. At 1:00pm I called and talked to the head of the department who told me she never got the massage and "sorry our vet is booked up today". So we waited all morning for nothing and the vet cannot make an emergency appointment for this kind of situation? I guess Wayside has no compassion for a dying animal. Everything seemed to have its place and easy to find what i was looking for! For the past few months I have been thinking about getting a new kitten, as I felt I was now ready to do so! (My kitten passed away over a year ago now, shortly after his first birthday). There were soo many pets to choose from. I finally did it and broke down and got a puppy! After looking online forever and going to another very sad and stinky animal shelter, I went to Wayside Waifs to check out their goods. Well, what struck me first was how clean the entire place was (especially after immediately coming from KCK Animal Control. Eww) The staff was quite friendly and helpful in determining what type of dog would be best for my lifestyle. The woman who sat in the room while I played with my dog was very enthusiastic and kind, but also realistic, bursting the bubble of some of my naive expectations. You can tell the staff here really do love animals! It took a while to be helped, but that was because there were so many people looking for pets! I definitely don't mind waiting if it's because all of the lovable furballs were finding new homes. The fees were reasonable, they covered all the bases as far as medical requirements and health issues, and they made me feel great about my choice. What a beautiful temporary home for these animals! Last week my husband, my dog, and I took a drive to Wayside Waifs to meet this little chihuahua I had received a notification about (you can receive notifications when certain breeds that you are interested in arrive to shelter). The staff was very patient and addressed my concerns about introducing a rescue to my current rescue dog. We went through two meet and greets with the dogs before deciding to take Koa (formerly known as Champ) home. I had to address several issues post adoption such as Koa having worms and having the wrong microchip information. However, the staff handled everything and issues were resolved within a day. The vet at Wayside Waifs provided Koa with medication and I received the paperwork needed for the microchip. Thank you Wayside Waifs for everything! We love our new little guy! read more

DO NOT GO HERE. What a joke of a place. Rescued a cute pitbull from wayside and they told me he was dog and people friendly, very playful just has to warm up to the dog. Well he attacked my very calm lab twice and we had to put the lab down because he attacked him so badly. Then they wouldn't let me return the pitbull. Don't lie to your customers just to "get rid" of the dog. Disgusting. Your staff didn't even seem to care what the next option was for the pitbull. I have adopted three different dogs from Wayside Waifs and never been deceived or disappointed. First one was only 24 hours since they did not know how sick he was. The second one I had for 12 years till she passed away recently from an infection that cause her autoimmune system to attack her red blood cells. And now on my third, 4 1/2 years young and is a doll. Would never get one from a puppy mill. I love the way Wayside Waifs process the adoptions, and now they have someone who checks up on the adoptions within a week. Love this animal shelter and have adopted two kittens from here. They are very good about making sure the animals are paired up with the right of type owners and I like that all animals are spayed and neutered before getting adopted. The first kitten I adopted from here fell sick after I brought her home so I took her back to Wayside and they treated her for a respiratory infection and kept her until she was good to come home without charging me a dime. These guys are ROCK STARS! They are really into their job and I'd guess that the majority of the staff are volunteers. Have you been here? All of these animals appear well-cared for, highly adoptable, happy, and healthy. It's fun walking the aisles and seeing what they have before you ask for playtime with a specific dog or 2. I'd never been to a shelter before, but I was shocked at how amazing this facility, staff, and pets were. This is a happy place, not one of those sad shelters you see on tv. I went in 3 days within a week time span and spent probably a total of 10 hrs of looking at dogs, playing with them, and then going through an exhaustive adoption process. They were pretty patient with my questions and my fiance's indecisiveness. Yes, some of the reviews that are negative have a point. There's often a long wait to "meet a dog," though after filling out a one page form you can see whoever you like by looking in the "window." The adoption process itself is quite time consuming, exhaustive and they ask a lot of personal questions. However, I can't knock them for that. This isn't burger king here. These are living creatures who were given up at least once and they want to make sure they go to a home that can and will take care of them. Just because you want a dog doesn't mean it's the right fit for you. They're quite good at being honest with you saying they will or won't be good around kids, other pets, etc. and won't let you adopt if it's a bad fit. Also, it's non profit, so I figure it costs them a good deal of money to have someone adopt a dog and then return it again. Imagine all the vet, grooming, and other overhead. If you can't handle the hard questions and an occasional "no," this place isn't for you and you shouldn't be taking a pet. It's a responsability, not a right. When you adopt a child, do you just get one because you ask for one? I walked out with a PRIZE: an amazing purebred cockerspaniel that is happy, healthy, fun to be with and quite loving. On the financial end, you walk off with 5 lbs of dog food, fully vaccinated, neutered/spayed, healthy (they vet looks at them on the way out just in case they missed something), lots of paperwork, discounts and advice. Since they are a non-profit anything you buy there is TAX FREE. I priced out the kennel they sold me. It was less than Petco with a whole bunch of coupons included. The adoption fee is quite reasonable and cut by 50% when they have adoptathons. Did I mention that some dogs may already be microchipped? They also give you 45 days of free pet insurance and the shelter itself covers some issues for free within 10 days. If you don't have the basics and you have to take your dog home right away unexpectently (they couldn't hold the dog as an adoptathon was coming up and they were closed for a few days), they do sell all the basics right there and the prices seem amazing. On a normal week, they only hold the dog for 48 hrs. I've recently adopted my second dog from Wayside Waifs and I wouldn't go anywhere else. The folks that work and volunteer at Wayside love animals and want nothing but the best for the little ones that find themselves in their care. The shelter is no kill. I've twice adopted there, both times I've adopted puppies. Usually there is a fairly limited selection of puppies at any given time (if you want full blown, couple month old puppies...) but they have had some both times I've been. They've also got a large selection of dogs older dogs, from barely not a puppy through to older aged. So they've got a wide selection. The adoption process is pretty easy and they give you a rundown of anything that might be going on with your dog, give you info on how to care for your dog, integrate it into your family, and all that. They give you plenty of info to have a successful adoption. If something should happen, you have a 30 day period where you can return your adopted pet if need be, with the money spent able to be applied to another adoption (in lieu of a refund). Their fees are really reasonable (cheap if you compare them to pet store dogs) and they have special events frequently where prices are even lower. My first dog i think we adopted for less than $100. The adoption process can be a little slow, but usually just because they tend to be pretty busy. The facility is really nice and kept very clean. The staff is friendly and helpful and seem to love what they are doing. If you are looking for a pet, adopt a rescue, and if you are going to adopt, you can't do much better than Wayside. read more

My husband & I adopted our first dog there as a married couple in 2005. He was a blue heeler mix named Shilo. We paid for what we THOUGHT would be a healthy young animal & got one who had seizures instead! He also had submissive urination as a bonus! So, every time a voice was raised to him, he would pee everywhere on brand new carpeting! When his seizures became too much to deal with & we decided that we weren't able to keep him on meds for the rest of his life, we took him to the animal shelter on Raytown Rd. It was implied that they would put him down. We were expecting a baby & weren't able to handle an epileptic dog & a baby. I feel horrible to this day! We depended on Wayside to have thoroughly vetted our animal as we thought they did with ALL adoptions & for a first time customer of Wayside, they let our animal down more than us! People who adopt there, should have the CHOICE of a special needs dog! That was taken from us instead. read more

I'm a huge animal lover, and I think it's really great that a place like Wayside Waifs exists. I'm all for taking in animals without the threat of euthanization. I adopted a cat here several years ago and I believe I paid $80 for her, which included her shots, spay and medical checkups. It was definitely a process...I had to fill out an application and then I had a waiting period as well, I couldn't just take her. Lame. What I DON'T like about the place is how horribly rude they are if you take an animal to them. One of my friends recently moved in with her fiance who is deathly allergic to cats. She tried for months to find a good home for her cat, but no one could take her. She didn't WANT to get rid of the cat, but she also didn't want her to fiance to swell up like a balloon and possibly die of asphyxiation, so she had no choice. She ended up taking the cat to Wayside Waifs as a last resort. The staff were so rude to her and made her feel so bad for 'abandoning' her cat that she was in tears. If their goal is to help animals, I think they should be a bit kinder to their customers whether they're adopting or bringing in a pet...they're more likely to come to adopt from them in the future. Or to bring them a pet again as opposed to taking them to the Humane Society. Just my two cents. read more

This no kill shelter is so clean and laid out so well. I was really impressed by everything and just wish I could adopt every animal there. The staff is very friendly and actually encourage you to pet the animals, and they're quick to let them out of the cage for you to have a visit. There were a lot of volunteers the day I went, socializing with the animals one on one, which is awesome as far as prepping them for adoption. Writing this review after many years of HURT. Giving one star to Wayside Waifs is being REALLY generous because I would give them -1000!!! A few years ago (2011) we lost our dog Daisy, we couldn't find her after a few weeks and we finally decided to check wayside waifs as a last resort. We not only found Daisy but she was given a different name by then. They REFUSED to give her back to us. Daisy at this point was crying for us. They claimed we would have to give them payment up front for Daisy. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER say adopt is better than shop because it is the SAME SCAM! The SAME. If Wayside Waifs was a person, they would be Carol Baskin. Someone who claims to help, but really only wants money. I feel bad for all those dogs, some who could be lost dogs and/or stolen. We adopted s sweet kitten 10 years ago from here! The name the kitten was given was Shelby, we decided to change it to Lilly! Lilly is a sweet kitty & she still lives with us & we love her dearly. My husband bought her for me after my kitty named S Callie had passed away 2 months earlier. We decided to adopt Lilly after getting to spend some time with her,we immediately bonded with her so we put in our application! The gold-standard for shelters. They do it right. We went on a busy day when there was a special price for adoptions being offered. We picked a sweetie of a kitty who was described to us as a shelter-kitty. She'd been in-and-out of shelters in her 3 years. She's been home with us for 3 weeks. After 2 weeks the staff at WW reached-out to see how things were going. Volunteers were great, staff was great, facility was clean and pleasant.
