The streetcar is genuinely my favorite part of living downtown. If anyone tries to make the streetcar paid, I will riot. The streetcar is an awesome free source of public transit that makes the city more accessible! I will do anything to not drive my car, so the streetcar is my favorite way to experience downtown. All of the stops are conveniently located by major areas along Main Street from Union Station to Rivermarket, and the streetcars come every 10-15 mins from very early in the morning until very late at night. It's hard for me to fathom that the KC Streetcar has now been in operation for 6 1/2 years! It seems like just yesterday; maybe because the cars are kept so clean on the inside and the wraps on the outside are always vibrant and eye-catching; usually promoting events, teams or places in this town as iconic as The Streetcar has become. Another phenomenal thing; it has remained free to ride AND it is expanding. Tracks are currently in the ground south of Pershing to 31st St and soon we'll be riding all the way to the UMKC area once construction is done. I do not live or work downtown anymore, but there is nothing like driving or Ubering into the Main St. corridor and hopping around River Market / Downtown / Crossroads for sightseeing, shopping, dining, or bar hopping. It just adds a bit of urban sophistication, fun and an alternative means of mobility to the city. The Streetcar has brought easy access to multiple locations for residents and tourists alike, while being a catalyst for growth and excitement for 20 blocks along the Main St. Corridor. The next phase will more than double that!! Secret tip. Park at 7th and Main for free on the weekends, put on your empty backpack and you can be in the City Market via the North Loop stop in no time at all with no traffic or parking headaches. I absolutely love LOVE the streetcar! It's FREE! It gets you across town (Union Station to River Market) and you don't have to wait for more than 15 mins typically. On freezing cold days, you get to warm up and thaw, until your next stop. On hot days, you get a bit of a cool down. The homeless people tend to keep to themselves, unlike in Seattle and there's usually more than enough room to sit/stand. There's also an attendant inside, to help guide tourists or people with questions. It's great! read more

We've come a long way from empty downtown streets in KC over the past decade, and seeing and riding the KC Streetcar helps continue positive Downtown progress for the future in my opinion. The KC Streetcar is in the show-me state, and I think that's an apt way to look at this whole two mile project. This (sometimes maniacally) driving city needed to see something like the KC Streetcar. It needed to see kids begging to ride it, or downtown workers (and there are a lot of them) checking out new restaurants for lunch. It needed something for all the new residents, and it certainly needed developers to flock down there to build off the success of the Crossroads. Is it in a honeymoon phase as of this writing? Sure. Is it going to fade? Of course. Was it the right thing to build at this exact moment in time? I don't want to get into politics on Yelp, so all I'll say is I'm glad it's a thing at this time. My ideal vision would be to think of the tourists coming to KC, and that means connecting it to the Westport and the Plaza. It would be so practical to revive a hideous, treacherous stretch of Main through Midtown where the roads are wide, the drivers are crazy and the developments are lacking. Think of all the exploration tourists in KC could easily do with a large connection like that. Sure people will mention connecting to the airport, which would be amazing but let's not get our hopes up there. A handful of miles more down a main (literally Main) city artery are much more attainable this decade. Ever since Uber came around, notice how it's almost been cool to take a cab after having drinks? I think that same effect would take place for people going to First Fridays, commuting downtown to work, or going down to the River Market. But yes, I think the KC Streetcar is sharp looking, and a nice start to show the city what we can continue to build on. I've always been proud to call KC home, and seeing us catch up with some positive elements that other cities has me feeling additional hometown pride. read more

A great example of public transportation that works and also is a catalyst for the area. I hopped on nearby Power & Light and headed down to River Market. I love how it's free. I love how it's easy to use and takes you to nodes in the urban core of KC. On a Saturday morning in January, it was absolutely packed. I was honestly surprised to see how many families were using it. Like it was kinda of annoyingly full of kids romping around. So there is a little novelty to the streetcar, but hey it's doing it's job of moving people with ease from A to B to C. They should definitely expand it to Westport and the Plaza. read more

If you are in Kansas City, Missouri, and have not experienced a ride on the KC Streetcar this is the time to give it a try! It is FREE, easy to board at Union Station, and just fun to ride. It runs from Union Station to Farmers Market with a number of stops along the way. It's easy on, just wait at Union Station or on one of the raised platforms along Main Street and it will pick you up. To get off just push the button by the door and it will stop at the next platform. It always empties all of the passengers at Union Station, but you can get back on. This was very likely the best thing about my trip to Kansas City. I unfortunately wasted about 20 dollars on Lyft rides before I knew about it. It basically was my sole means of transportation between my hotel in Power & Light and my conference at the Crown Center. I don't understand why the hotels along the street car aren't using this in marketing their hotels. Like my hotel sucked big time, and this street car almost made up for it. Visit the street care website if you want to know how to use it. But it's easy. You wait at the platform like you would for any train. To board you push a button to the open the doors, although if someone is exiting, they will likely push the button inside to exit before you push the button outside to enter. The entire push the button thing is kind of stupid to me, but I guess it's nice if the weather is bad? You have to push a button once inside to let the driver know where you'd like to stop. Once in, sit, stand, whatever. I sit or lean or grab something because my balance isn't that great. It's clean and fast and FREE. If I'd had more time I would have ridden the thing from end to end just for fun. I wish we had this in Baltimore... read more

A wonderful little people-mover, and I'm happy to hear that they just approved the expansion! The Chicago El it is not, of course, but as a convenient and fun connector between popular points of interest, it excels. It circles the River Market in the north, travels south through Downtown, where it connects you to bus stations, then farther south through the Crossroads Arts Districts, and finally stops at Union Station. The southern terminus is also within walking distance to the cool WWI Museum. Two years after opening it was still perfectly clean. The ride was smooth and there was ample seating. It's a great asset to Kansas City, and the best part is that, for the time being, it's free! read more

The 2.1 mile four vehicle Kansas City Streetcar line running from the River Market to Union Station is a jewel in this crown of the multi-billion revitalization of the core of Kansas City. It's designed as a starter line, to prove to the naysayers it could be done on time and on budget and most importantly that people would ride it, and oh have they ! Preliminary and optimistic bean counters hoped for about 2700 riders a day... last I heard ridership is averaging almost 7000 riders a Day ! The method of financing was and still is controversial but people are loving the new "trolley" and they are designing expansions southward to the Plaza and UMKC and to then north and east . Kansas City Street Car is still under development, not fully up and running nor complete. But that doesn't stop the havoc, harm and dangers it's called to our fellow citizens. I myself experienced this danger while the project is still under construction on this day a month ago I had fallen into a insecure ditch on 41st Main. This was during a thunder storm on July 16th,2023. The storm was so bad it caused the ditch to fill with water, and because there were no cones or cages to block the site, my car slid off into it, causing my car to immediately fill with water ( I could have gotten killed). I reported the incident to the project manager and executive director of the project via email and attempted to contact by phone but I've been ignored. My car is no longer operable because of the impact and damages the accident caused,and I was told by a journeyman at the construction site"you are the third person this happened to". My lack of transportation has interfered with my job and it's not fair to me and my family. I DO NOT FEEL THE STREET CAR IS GOING TO BE SAFE OR A ENJOYABLE EXPERIENCE AT ALL! read more

I love and very proud that we have KC Streetcar, a free ride for everyone, no matter you are a local resident or a out of the state tourist/visitor. We don't use streetcar a lot as we live at northwest part of the county, but whenever we have concert/activity to go at downtown area, we'll ride it so no need to worry about looking for a good/close parking spot with high cost event parking fee. Thank you Kansas City!!! The other reason I like about streetcar is that you can meet interesting people on the ride, exchange the short story of each other and be an good ambassador, introduce KCMO to tourists/visitors. Horribly run public transportation. As much as I pay in taxes to find it, you would hope it was faintly reliable but unfortunately it isn't.

I hate that an opinion on the streetcar has to be political, because it is not my intention to make a political statement here. I will trust you to read this objectively. I work downtown, so I've had multiple chances to ride the streetcar since it opened. I understand it's brand-new (as of this writing) so there may be more people riding it right now than there will be several months from now. But in one instance in which I was trying to get six blocks away and back, the total trip took one hour and five minutes. Another trip to River Market from 9th Street took 40 minutes round-trip. A dedicated rail line in what is already a clunky and crowded downtown just doesn't seem to work well, at all. I'm not entirely sure who the streetcar is supposed to serve, because if you live downtown, walking is certainly going to be faster for most of you. It's obviously not going to draw tourists. And downtown doesn't really need revitalization considering it has already seen strong growth the last several years and is at something around 98 percent occupancy. Waiting on it to arrive has taken anywhere from about 5 to 20 minutes. When I was waiting for it in River Market, it was about 50 yards from picking us up, but decided to yield to a person who wanted to get in their car parked on the street. When I was about to get dropped off, we were about 20 feet from the stop but had to wait because a car was blocking the line. It seems to be causing traffic congestion, as I've seen long lines of cars behind it miss green lights that otherwise would have made it. The justification for the 1-star rating: Long wait times, impracticality of use (for me, anyway), slow ride, and my concern for how it seems to affect traffic efficiency. I hope I'm wrong and that is generates revenue for businesses. And I'm all about modernization, but a dedicated rail line doesn't seem to be a step in that direction. The other idea of public transit is to decrease the number of cars on the road, and I certainly don't see that happening in Kansas City just because of the streetcar. Even if you live downtown, it's nearly impossible to live in KC without your own vehicle because the metro is so spread out. Commence praising me or (more likely) hating me. If you are someone who personally finds effective use for it, I would genuinely like to hear your story. read more

Our first ride on the KC Streetcar was at 3:30 on a Monday. We live nearby and had been waiting for a time of light traffic. We rode the entire route the first time just to check where the stops were located and the shops near them. Later we rode again, this time getting off near Farmers Market. We enjoy riding in the daylight as you can see the shops as you pass. After dark it's more like a mirrored view, a reflection. It is a fascinating ride, an addition to Kansas City that everyone should enjoy! There are so few free things left in our world I feel that everyone in KC as well as everyone who visits KC, should ride the Kansas City Streetcar. The best place to start is at Union Station as it seems to be the beginning, however you can start your ride anywhere you can find parking ! No tickets needed, just get on. And push the button when you want off! There is no limit to the number of times you can get on or off, however it only stops at the 16 KC Streetcar platforms. Great "FREE" public transportation in the heart of downtown KC. We found our first visit using the streetcar fun and easy to hop on/off at your favorite destinations. It stops at some great locations, making sightseeing & entertainment easy and enjoyable. The train is smart looking and clean; however... as always, there needs to be attendants within the cars to keep the riff raff off and riders safe. We had, sadly, a homeless person sitting (sleeping) behind us that desperately needed a bath, clean clothes and probably food. This does not offend me and makes me more sad than anything else, but I would like to feel safe at all times. Just something to think about KC.... Dirty and hot - it was so overcrowded it was uncomfortable. The "vent/AC" was heard but never felt. It was sweltering. We grabbed a safety bar just land our hand in a mess of unknown "sticky goo"...FILTHY! The driver was awful, it isn't a wonder why they keep having wrecks. Whiplash came to mind as I exited the car...takeoff was like a rocket and he/she hit the brakes with what I considered full intention to throw every patron through the windshield. We hoped on the Streetcar bandwagon this past weekend, Carnival rides and all! Friday night it seemed like the whole city was packed in like sardines, but Saturday was a bit more chill. I got flash backs to Chicago's subway system since part of it is above ground. I guess the only thing that peeved me a bit is you have to have a Sprint number to get on their wifi. I wish Omaha would get with it and add something like this to our downtown area. This is really a dual purpose item - it is convenient and free transportation to move about some of KC's most popular areas, but also a bit of a tourist attraction. It is nice to ride the car with no real destination in mind just to check out the sites of the city. My experience has also been that it is very crowded. I heard that the actual riders on the Streetcar quadrupled what was projected. It is also nice that they require all riders to exit and the end of the line which clearly prevents individuals from endlessly riding the car. read more

The KC streetcar is a great addition to Kansas City. We are so excited that the expansion passed as it will be closer to our house when it does expand. Kansas City is spread out and the streetcar is great for getting around downtown easily. It travels from River Market to Union Station and everywhere in between. Its a great way to connect to bus stations too. It stops at popular points of interest. Oh, I forgot to mention its free. The streetcar is clean and easy to access at the terminals. You do have to exit at Union Station but can get back on. It runs all day until 2am. Plus at each platform you usually don't have to wait for more than 15 minutes for a street car to come. They are fairly prompt. I took my dad on the street car when he was here for a visit just to ride the length of it and show him highlights of Kansas City. There is a novelty to it but it is also functional and moves many people daily. Lots of families on the weekend heading to the River Market farmers market. I have been to many cities which utilize this sort of system but so far as I have seen, the KC Streetcar is the cleanest and safest rides I have been on. I've taken the KC Streetcar to go out to dinner, to go to a show, to go to Forks n' Corks, to go to movies, to get to a meeting, to go shopping and for coffee, to have happy hour and to experience the Christmas light show at Crown Center...hmmm, I've also used it to get groceries and to get home from all of these things rain or shine. I've seen the Streetcar get stuck by cars in the path and I've seen it REALLY FULL OF PEOPLE but I haven't been on it for either of those things.
