Note: (1) Cash only (2) it's harder to order when you don't speak Chinese as their English is limited - you can always point at the display I have been coming here for years as it's closer than going to Chinatown for some Chinese bakery goods. The place is always busy in the mornings and there are a few tables that are always occupied by people chatting with each other while sharing some breakfast. It doesn't look super clean and it's a bit old but it does the job as majority of the people take their stuff to go. There are a variety of buns that you can point to if you don't know the names but keep in mind that a lot of these customers cut in line so you must make haste. I usually get the egg tarts (classic favorites), pineapple bun and the corn bun. They're good when warm but you rarely get them warm. Stop by and try out the delicious buns! Traditional Chinese bakery. My family comes here from time to time for pastries. I ordered two cakes from here, separate days. The baker was so pleasant! There's a language barrier as I speak mainly English, but he was very patient with me as I depicted what I wanted. I called on the phone and they recommended that I come in. The cakes were vanilla, he wrote down what I wanted and had the messages displayed correctly. I honestly forgot the prices of the cake but I believe they were $25? Limited varieties during Covid but displayed their available pastries daily and kept all of the inventories in a warmer for sanitary and safety purposes. Don't confuse this place w/ KC on 10th st. bc this is way better. Great selection, great taste and friendly helpful staff even if you don't speak Mandarin. Was in the area and was excited to see a KC's around the corner! Unfortunately they were out of char siu (pork buns) when I got there on a Wednesday afternoon, so I got a pineapple red bean bun, a taro bun, and a ground pork/cheese sandwich bun to go (which I scarfed down with a fruity tea at Mr Wish next door as a quick lunch). This might be one of the better pineapple buns I've ever had. My usual experience with these is a excessively dry, flaky crust--but this one was I think how a pineapple bun should be. The sugary pineapple crust was solidly set, not flaking off and crumbling everywhere as I bit into it. It was the perfect compliment to the earthy red bean paste, which I note is not overly sweet. 3 buns for less than $3 and friendly counter staff. No complaints. read more

Okay, this is very important: THIS PLACE IS NO LONGER A PASTRY SHOP. That's right, the owners essentially turned the place into a restaurant. It still has pastries in the morning but it can no longer really be classified as a pastry shop. That said, this is a review of its dinner as of this month---though I would give their pastries as of last month 3 stars as well. They've been doing barbeque and lunch takeouts for a while but the full blown fancy tables and dinner thing is new. Anyway, when I went there they don't have menus printed yet. So if you can't read Chinese? You're screwed. Actually, even if you can read Chinese you're screwed as the only thing resembling a "menu" in this place were two posterboards with Chinese dish names and prices written on them in ornate calligraphy---that's my polite way of saying undecipherable chickenscratch. Our party managed to decipher 90% of it. We're sure that one of the last dishes was a poultry dish of some sort but we couldn't figure out what animal it was supposed to be. The good thing is that the actual menu isn't limited to these 13 items on the wall, as the chef will pretty much cook anything that you can find in a standard Chinese restaurant. We had three casseroles: lamb with dried bean curds, fish head, and beef satay, all from menus on the wall. They were pretty good, though nothing spectacular. It's of note that they are in Northeast Philadelphia and they actually serve these dishes and manage do a reasonable job with them. One of these days I may visit them for breakfast and see how it is, because it seems like they have a very interesting (Chinese only, of course) breakfast menu that includes frog porridge. They also serve lobster for breakfast, which I believe makes them quite unique. read more

This is always my go-to spot when I want a quick breakfast or pastry on the go. This place opens super early so you can grab something and head to work. They are located in the Far Northeast and right on my way to work. Char siu bao are yummy, ham soy guk are crispy, chewy and delightful. The pineapple custard buns are my personal favorite. Deep in Northeast is theui7 real Chinatown on the 6800 block of Bustleton Ave. Three decent places serving mainly a Chinese clientele and the few others who dare enter find poor English and good food for relatively low prices. KC's is mainly a Chinese bakery and they are certainly a credible if not the finest example of such. By the by they serve a very decent cup of coffee for a buck fifty. There also have the typical swinging doors to 'the back' and from time to time i have seen interesting looking dishes emerge. After a while I screwed up my courage and asked for a menu.and got a half decent translation on two pages of many different things all for 5 bucks. I had Singapore chow mai fun (even though I ordered the unusual chow fun version) and it was ok - not too spiced but a generous portion and certainly quite edible- some soy and a touch of sriracha doctored it up pretty well. Also had some mushroom and shrimp - not haut cuisine but this Busstleton ave AOC was tasty - loads of clearly fresh mushrooms, some typical small likely frozen shrimp some beef gravy and a big mound of white rice. There are loads of other dishes available as well - not too great for those who think beef chow mein is an adventurous meal and hey don't forget the cash only five buck price. You get a nice filling meal here for the money, and then you can take some decent Chinese desert home or perhaps some pork buns for those who are sorry they were not adventurous. Cash only, not the greatest English spoken, very plain and good coffee or tea, bubble tea, iced coffee and tea and some coke products. Ok I've never been a fan of Kc's Pastries, the one in Chinatown. This one is located in the Northeast and isnt that good. Breads have no taste, they are not sweet enough. Egg tarts aren't good at all. Bubble tea? They have a version of it, but I would call it bubble tea, the tapioca pearls in bubble tea should be chewy and not be melted globs of goo.
