    Egg tart
    Rachel K.

I came here because I heard they have good egg tarts and they do. The tart had an amazingly crispy & flaky crust. The inside was sweet, soft, and very eggy. They had other baked goods in the display case that looked so delicious (sesame ball, pineapple bun, different breads). I know I'll definitely be coming back to try more! I also ordered a taro boba smoothie. It was good. Fairly standard. PSA: Cash only!! Seating was limited! A couple small tables in the back of the shop but not much at all.

I needed some sesame balls. I was told it is a famous thing for Chinese breakfast. Very sweet. And delightful. The staff is also very very friendly and helpful and kind!! We also ate inside and it was very tidy and clean and we enjoyed a nice hot cup of coffee and stayed out of the rain and enjoyed our very wonderful coffee and treat

Had a cake from here at a birthday party. The cake was so light and not overly sweet, highly recommend!

This place is a local gem! Their baked goods are always fresh and reasonably priced. I ordered a chestnut cake and was able to pick it up the very next day.

    Pork Bun

This bakery sticks out to me not only for the affordable prices but the delicious, fresh buns! Quick and easy service! There are a few seats inside but mostly people are taking it to go. I'd recommend having cash but you can also pay via Venmo. I will be stopping by next time I'm in Philly.

This humble Asian Bakery nestled in the heart of Philly's Chinatown took care of our large group and got all our orders in and out with a smile. My kids said it's as good as the spot we always go to in Brooklyn. Had to try in myself and for sure was similar. The pork bun was stuffed with morsels of pork and golden light brown crust. There pineapple buns was so good I had two. We went back the next day and ordered a couple of boxes to go bring back home.

Going clockwise, lemon cake, pineapple cake, coconut bun, egg custard tart

This is where Yelp comes into play. When we passed Mayflower, I recognized the bakery from a review I read last week. (Thanks for the recommendation, Sophia!) "Gotta try it," I told my husband. The egg custard tart is excellent. As I waited my turn, the woman ahead of me bought 'em out, leaving one measly tart, which I snagged. 'If you can wait twenty minutes, we'll have more,' the helpful clerk offered. Unfortunately, we had a train to catch. I also bought a coconut bun and two slices of cake, one lemon, the other pineapple. When we got home, we sampled everything. I liked the bun. The pineapple cake tasted stale. I preferred the lemon which was good, but not outstanding. Now that custard tart -- the flakey pastry, the delicious filling... more, please!

    Taro cake

It's hard to find a good bakery these days. I used to go to Saint Honore in Chinatown before they closed. Mayflower retains the same essence that Saint Honore did. Their pastries are almost as good too but I recently bought the Taro cake and it has the same characteristics that cakes from chinese bakeries usually have. It has the typical semi-sweet cream, the fluffy and moist cake, and layer of taro (but usually fruit) between each layer of cake. Is it the best cake I've ever had? No, but it's a slightly elevated rendition of a homemade cake that is refreshing and light, perfect after a heavy dinner.

Ok, still my favorite bakery in Chinatown by a mile. Egg custard tarts are better than any other place & everything is fresh. Kids love the hot dog buns for a snack & the prices are still super reasonable for the quality. They take Venmo if you don't have cash too!

    10-inch birthday cake

My family has been coming to this bakery for years. I can't speak on the drinks, but pastries are always great and super flaky, like the pineapple buns. The main item we get from Mayflower Bakery is the birthday cake! The texture is always super fluffy, the icing is whipped cream so it's not heavy, and you can get taro or fruit as the filling between cake layers. Best compliment we can give is that it's not too sweet. We typically call a few days in advance to order the cake. The service is also great - with the cake, you can request a message and we also got several candles included.

I got pineapple coconut bun and I was excited that it was warm. I immediately had a big bite but I felt I was eating cotton candy because most of what I ate was air, barely any dough. Puffs, it was gone. I'm sure the inflation is the cause for this change. Other buns looked smaller too.

    Rainbow cake was amazing

Today is technically my birthday, according to the lunar calendar. So, I need a cake to celebrate. I walked by Mayflower Cafe & Bakery on Race Street, on my way from dinner on 9th Avenue. The aroma invited me from opening the first door. After opening the second door, I knew exactly what I want. The rainbow cake 彩虹蛋糕 ($2.25) was perfect. So soft, like chiffon cake, my favorite. Then, the cream was light like eating clouds. I don't know much about the restaurant but it is cheaper than most bakeries. The main reason is the cash-only policy. I also ordered egg tart 蛋塔 - so soft and light. It only costs $1.50. WOW. I'm in Chinese bakery heaven. I don't live around here. But I would definitely come over when I travel again.

    Vietnamese coffee, iced
    Janet L.

The Vietnamese iced coffee is soooo good. They phin drip it, so it takes several minutes to be made, but it's so worth it. It has that authentic smoky chicory taste I've missed since I moved from the west coast. So glad I made the time to drop by here during my visit to Philly. It's kind of wild they give a 16 oz iced cup since it's stronger than normal drip coffee. If you're caffeine sensitive, be careful with how much you drink and when during the day you drink it. Payment via Venmo was convenient!

A few additional cookies tossed in our delivery for free, made it feel like a better value since we had some leftover to enjoy with morning coffee. The Deluxe cookies were a treat w/ the peanut butter varieties a fav, but ALL the cookies, including the ones I didn't pick, were delicious. A little annoying the upcharges for deluxe varieties when I thought that was the point of picking an option that includes them, but the additional free cookies helped soften that. I swing by Insomnia Cookies on random days too because sometimes you just need a warm cookie to reset your mood. They always come out soft, gooey, and fresh from the oven. The store itself is clean and kind of cool to look at. There's a whole wall covered in giant industrial-style on and off switches. I still wish I could have pulled one just to see what would happen. Staff was chill and genuinely helpful. They were patient while we tried to figure out which cookie was which during the ranking, and they kept the energy light and fun. Same when they handed out the free boxes. Whoever runs the HQ location clearly knows how to make the experience feel special.

The restaurant has a great two-level layout: a bustling coffee bar and small Italian market on the lower level, and a wine bar restaurant upstairs. It was a beautiful day, so outdoor seating was available, but after the hostess explained that the full menu is served on both levels, we opted to sit upstairs in the wine bar. Our server was fantastic--friendly, immediate, and quick to offer sparkling or tap water while handing us all the options. They offer a main lunch menu, a specials menu, and a great lunchtime deal with a limited $20 per person fixed menu. We started by sharing the mussels in a white garlic sauce. They were delicious, and the table bread dipped into the leftover garlic juices was absolutely delightful! For our main courses, my daughter got the spaghetti carbonara, and I ordered the chitarra pasta with red chili. Both pastas were cooked perfectly al dente and came in very satisfying portion sizes. My daughter's carbonara was even served with a savory bacon-flavored gelato on top! My only minor critique of my dish was that the pork was a bit fattier than I prefer and wasn't cooked as crisp as I'd like, but the flavor was still great. We couldn't leave without dessert, so we both got gelato. I had the amaretto and salted caramel, while my daughter went with dark chocolate and salted caramel. Both were insanely good--super creamy, rich, and full of flavor. Overall, the bill was surprisingly reasonable given how much quality food we enjoyed. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu, but especially for that unbelievable gelato!

5 stars for Bud and Marilyn's? I recently gave The Love 5 stars for its fried chicken!…read more The Marilyn's Fried Chicken I had this evening was every bit as good! I'm not sure why I waited so long to try the chicken at Bud and Marilyn's, but better late than never! They serve a LARGE 1/2 chicken. I started with the thigh. I was smitten by the first bite. I was told the chicken is soaked in a buttermilk brine for 24-48 hours - dipped in a buttermilk dredge - covered with their 'secret recipe' seasoned flour - and fried in a 'pressure fryer' that cooks the chicken in 12 minutes. It was perfectly fried - so crispy - the texture and seasoning of the exterior coating was incredible. The chicken was tender and juicy - the thigh was the juiciest - I didn't get to try the drumstick as I was too full! I had the thigh and 1/2 the breast. The breast is my favorite and I savored each large delicious piece I broke apart. It's important to pick up the chicken and eat it by hand - I did cut mine in half for a picture - but didn't use a fork to eat it - you lose the 'panache'of the meal. I didn't use the hot sauce served with the chicken - I brought my own bottle of honey and poured it over the chicken and biscuits. It was heavenly! Which brings me to the Biscuits! The dish comes with 2 large fluffy buttermilk biscuits - they were golden brown on the outside and tender and fluffy on the inside! They had such a rich, buttery flavor. I took several pieces of chicken and layered them on pieces of biscuit, drizzled with honey! It was truly a 5 star fried chicken and biscuit dinner!

They definitely seem consistent, which I really appreciate. I came with a couple of friends on a Saturday afternoon, and wow... this place was packed. Even with the crowd, the staff stayed friendly and worked quickly, so we didn't have to wait too long for our drinks. One thing I still love is the seating. They have giant plushies sitting in the booths, so if you're by yourself, you're not just awkwardly staring at an empty seat across from you. Maybe I'm the only one who appreciates that, but I think it's a cute touch. The matcha here is the real deal. It's bright green, fragrant, and has that rich, earthy flavor with just enough natural bitterness that you know they're using quality matcha. A lot of places advertise matcha, but this one actually delivers. I ordered one of their matcha desserts with ice cream, and it was creamy, refreshing, and let the matcha flavor shine instead of burying it under sugar. My only complaint is that it was pretty warm inside. It was a hot summer day, and I honestly couldn't tell if the air conditioning was running or if it was just fans. Either way, it wasn't very cool inside. Thankfully I had ice cream, so it didn't bother me too much, but it's something to keep in mind if you're stopping by on a really hot day. Overall, another great visit. Friendly staff, consistently high-quality matcha, and a fun atmosphere. If you're a matcha lover, this is still one of my favorite spots in Chinatown.

I personally thought the matcha one was the best. The service was quick and informative. And I loved the little booths they had, it was adorable. That aside, I do think the drinks are mediocre. I just couldn't get over the overpowering sweetness of the mango puree, but that's my personal preference. The mango flavor itself wasn't bad! Maybe half sweet would be the way to go, Im not sure if they do adjustments. If you love yuzu, I don't recommend their yuzu soft serve HOWEVER their matcha soft serve is pretty yummy Their Hojicha was watery...I really hoped it would be better. I don't recommend it.
