Food, the bbq pit, you the customer get to walk up & select what you prefer to eat. Various sausages, tried the hot sausage, bit on the dry side, tasteful not my favorite. Pork rib, was juicy & tasty, which is a great feeling in your mouth. The pulled beef brisket literally falls apart as it lands on your paper. When the security guard at the airport recommends a bbq place, you can certainly expect for it to be the best in town! KD's did not disappoint, both with the succulent meats, sweet brown sauce and friendly service. I walked in 30 minutes before closing on a Thursday evening in late March and was promptly ushered back to the pits with a to-go container where I acquired a jalapeño cheese sausage, hot link sausage, a hefty slice of brisket and single rib, all my specific request. The gentleman (owner?) was kind enough to fix up containers with all the free fixings - sliced pickles, onions, peppers, wheat bread (nicely done) and three different kinds of sauces. While I enjoyed both their traditional and spicy versions, I will admit that the sweet brown sauce really caught me, probably due to the four years I lived in Memphis. I wasn't blown away by the rib, but I think ribs may simply not be my favorite option for bbq. I was absolutely impressed with the thick bark on the brisket and snap of both sausages. They price by the pound here, which makes things simple. Plenty of seating and smoke goodness permeated the entire establishment. KD's certainly is your more traditional, old-school style bbq joint; while it does not have the polish of a Pecan Lodge, you can't go wrong to get your bbq fix here. I didn't plan on stopping at KD's, but I'm really glad that I did. Tucked away at a random rest stop on the side of the highway, this doesn't look like a place that would serve up the best brisket I've ever tasted. The restaurant is pretty neat, it looks like an old garage and has a whole lot of seating inside. Ordering here is simple, they have all of the meats sitting in a trunk, and you let them know which ones you want, paying by the pound. Don't worry about picking a lighter tray, they just weigh the meat on butcher paper. As previously mentioned, the brisket was amazing. Great smokiness and really really tender. Don't miss the pork, ribs or peach cobbler either, I tried those too and really enjoyed everything! I didn't get any of the for-purchase sides (unless you count the cobbler), but the bean bar is included with your meal. Nothing amazing, but definitely adequate for something to break up the parade of meats you picked out (also, can't argue with free!). Service was great, the staff did a great job of explaining how picking out meats worked, and while we were looking for a good table they even asked us if we needed help :p I would definitely recommend stopping at KD's if you're driving by. After living in midland for almost a year... It was my first time at KD's bbq... We had some visitors from Seattle and my fiancé wanted to take them here. The atmosphere was chilled and awesome. It was dark and the place was FILLED with the random-est things lol my favorite was the toilet-view poster in the girls restroom... As you enter.. (what looks like a trailer..) you walk pass this man that cuts up the meat and you pick whatever you want and however much you want. It's about 14.99lb? You get to choose brisket, hot links, cheddar links, ribs, bbq burnt tips, corn, etc. they also serve potato salad, chili, and cobblers. After passing the trailer section, you then enter a HUGE sitting area there's seats everywhere.. And it extends! I love the atmosphere it's chilled and everyone is sweet there! Wow, am I really the first to review? This is the best BBQ you will ever have in your life, and I don't mess around when it comes to BBQ. I recommend the chopped beef. You pick whatever meat you want, and then there are loaves of bread and BBQ sauce and everything you need to make a sandwich at the condiment bar in the middle of the tables. I think the building might be a converted barn. It's in the middle of nowhere, Texas, which automatically makes it legit. I stop here every time I drive between LA and Dallas. 'nuff said. read more

We stopped at KD's for a late lunch on our move from Dallas to Phoenix, 9-3-2015. We chose the chopped brisket, turkey, hot link, peach cobbler and the pinto beans. The brisket was quite good and the hot link was pretty good, not overly spicy but had some decent heat to it. The turkey breast turned out to be a processed loaf of pressed turkey. It had that taste of cheap lunch meat and was airy and spongy, not at all what we expected in west Texas. We took it back and they gave us the meat of our choice and we selected more of the brisket. The beans had no seasoning of any kind. They appeared to have just been straight from the can and were very bland. The cobbler was made from canned peaches and the crust tasted like under-cooked dough. Overall it has a rustic, west Texas decor which is pleasant. WOW!!!!!! I can't believe I've never been here!!! The minute I walked in the door I felt at home! The atmosphere alone makes you feel like you're walking into a place where everyone knows your name. When you order you grab a tray and paper and a cook will load you up on the meats of your choice(they charge by the pound), get a few sides, a desert, a drink and then check out. You can get plenty of beans, onions, bread and sauce at the condiment island. Now to the taste... The sliced beef was tender and almost fell apart as you cut into it. I'm glad that they said that we could pay for the cobbler at the same time as our meal and come back for it once we were done otherwise we would have opted against getting it because we were so full BUT it is so good! My favorite was the peach cobbler, yum, yum, YUM! The sides are ok. It's a lot of fun to pick out which meat you get when you come in. Add in a grilled jalapeño or two if you like spicy. Every piece of meat that I've had there is very good. Their bar of onions, pickled peppers, jalapenos, baked beans and barbecue sauce kept warm in these crockpot type things is great. The employees there are kind of friendly, but I don't see a huge level of effort being put forward in the customer service department. This place can get very busy at lunch time. Don't be surprised if your bill approaches the $20 mark if you want to get some sides, which is baked beans with brisket, cole slaw and potato salad options. Teeny single toilet bathroom, hopefully there isn't a wait if you have to go. Overall a fun place to go, if the customer service or price points were above average, I would give it a 5 star rating. With all respect to the previous reviewers but I have to ask WHY do you make a positive comment about sweet tea, peach cobbler and potato salad?Did you go to KD's just to review THAT? It's all about the BBQ! And that's what I am going to do. KD's is a poor excuse for a restaurant and a poorer excuse for BBQ? We are local residents and have eaten here many times over the years and we are finally calling "calf rope"! We have had enough. No Mas! I think the letters " KD" stands for the initials of the owners. "K" is for Kathy. Maybe "D" stands for Doug? Good help is hard to hire in Midland right now but KD suffers more from the owner's greed and neglect than from the staff's lack of knowledge. However, I do agreewith the other reviewer about the staff's lack of knowledge. You don't actually get to pick your meat from the pit. You get to pick it from a warming pit. I think the actual pit is in an adjacent building on the property. But I have never actually seen the pit. Most BBQ places have mountains of wood next to their pits. It's not readily viewable at KD's. Who knows where the pit is located? Only the "Shadow" knows for sure..... which is about all you will see of the owners on the premises, at least in the evenings. But let's get back to KD's BBQ. The meat is wrapped in foil and displayed on the warming pit. The brisket is stored, wrapped in foil and perhaps Saran Wrap, in ice chests stacked next to the warming pit. Only the attendant know how long it stays in storage and on the warming pit. My wife brought dinner home from KD's this week. The brisket was almost all fat and mushy from being wrapped too long in foil and left on the warming pit far too long! On the bright side....if I had no teeth the brisket could just as easily be "gummed" and then swallowed. Digestion though is another topic. The cost of this fatty barely edible take home dinner with a pint of beans and potato salad for 3 was an eye watering $70.00. Makes you go Hmmm doesn't it. KD's pretty little attendants will be glad to poor ice tea for you but that's the extent of their waitressing. BUT you have ample opportunity to tip because KD has tip jars EVERY WHERE! At the register and in the center of every table in the joint and by the oil field sized igloo coolers of ice tea. If you have the urge for BBQ while you are in Midland, I suggest buying a pit and doing it yourself. You won't be any worse than KD's and a $70 a pop you can pay for a pit pretty quickly. if you don't have time to do it yourself, then wait until you are going to Austin for the weekend or maybe Dallas. If you are driving through Midland on I-20, there is a Whataburger across the street. Any place is better than this place! read more
