Been here twice at the recommendation of a friend and this place has never let me down. Wagyu was amazing and all the a la carte sashimi and rolls! Would definitely come back due to the quiet but fun ambiance, great service and delicious food. Taste: 5/5 Ambiance: 5/5 Service: 5/5

Wow. I think this is my favorite Japanese Restaurant in Calgary. Prices are so reasonable and food was super tasty. I came here on a Tuesday night. They have the deep fried special 20% off on Tuesday. I ordered: 1) Truffle Shrimps (5 shrimps) 2) Salmon Nigiri (2 pieces) 3) Miso Black Cod 4) Tuna Oshi (1 roll / 4 pieces) This place is super authentic. Ran and managed by Japanese people. The wasabi is also the real deal too. So first off the Truffle shrimp/tempura shrimp was flavorful. The tempura sauce was unique. It was thicker than the tempura sauce I get at other restaurants. But their tempura sauce had way more flavor. The batter was nice and light. It was freshly made upon ordering. The salmon nigiri had a nice thick piece of salmon on top of the rice bed. The rice was made with the perfect combination of vinegar and rice. The miso black cod was my favorite. The cod was moist and grilled to perfection. I watched them grill my fish in front of me. The tuna oshi was not bad. I liked it but it. Overall my dinner was super delicious. Best Japanese restaurant in Calgary or one of the best Japanese restaurants in Calgary.. Also it was nice that I got free ice cream for being a lady. It was a special they had that night I went. I left very happy. The bill came to $30ish. I highly recommend visiting this restaurant. You will not be disappointed.

This is my new favourite spot ! I have ordered from them numerous times , the food is consistently good. Lately , I have gone and eaten in, the service is superb , and the variety in the menu is quite something. I have enjoyed everything that I have tried here ... Sushi is my usual go to , but a special mention goes to the Lobster Bisque !

Initially I came here because I heard great things about the oysters, to my luck, they ran out of oysters but that's okay! We came on a Sunday evening and the ramen was 20% off. I was surprised with how good that ramen was and for the price, you can't go wrong! We ordered a bunch of items and was pleased with 95% of our items. Thanks to our server for being so attentive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this to others, and hope to come back next time we are in Calgary

Really great place to have big groups, they also have upstairs with a bar if you needed private party. We had 15 people and it only took up a table upstairs so could fit 35 people comfortably. The atmosphere is great and the food is amazing! Personally, my favourite place for skewers. I love how they have a variety of bbq skewers and sushi. Their sashimi is cut into fat generous chunks and taste so fresh! None of that slim cut cheap almost see through pieces. I'm in love with their lamb chops here! So flavourful, juicy, cooked to perfection and I like to dip it into their signature skewer sauce but the one that comes with it is good as well. Their pork ribs were ok but not fall off the bone juicy. I wouldn't order this next time I come but still was decent. I also come here for their gizzards! If you like to be adventurous definitely try these they have a addicting texture I could eat 10 skewers of these. This is also the few places I have found that have me favourite black sesame ice cream! I will definitely come back. The only bad thing I can say about this place is the lack of parking other than that all 15 friends of mine that came here loved this place.

I think this is one of my favourite sushi place in Calgary. I really liked this place. There are so many yummy options that makes you want everything. Even the miso soup with lobster is amazing!! You should try that as an entree with mochi deep fried :) And if you are not into sushi or sashimi, there are some fried options as well like salmon teriyaki and beef too. Depends what you like and I think I saw some barbecue options as well. And don't forget to drink some hot sake as a side.. and if you have any question, don't forget to ask for help, the servers are so helpful and nice, he could explained everything with details. I hope you guys like this place and i have a good time as I did ...

It was a bustling Saturday night -- the boys and I came here at 9 pm and the place was still hopping. We sat at the bar and watched the kitchen staff work with lightning speed efficiency. Our server was friendly and extremely helpful at explaining all the menu items. All yakitori are 20% off after 9pm. The yakitori was perfectly seasoned with a wonderful smokiness. The chicken tsukune(meatballs) were deliciously juicy and almost falling off the skewer. The lamb chops were cooked by our server on a hot stone grill at table side. We also ordered the quail eggs wrapped in bacon(which wasn't crispy enough, so we placed them on the stone grill since it was still quite hot), smoked duck with soba noodles, beef tongue, unagi, oishii sushi rolls and grilled saba(mackerel). Overall, we had a fantastic experience!

Came down to Calgary for a trip and went to check on Ke Charcoal! I love the vibe the restaurant has. It's homie and welcoming with some cool and unique Japanese street decor. You can see the chefs cook your meals from your seat! I ordered the oshi sushi (both spicy salmon and tuna). This was okay. The fish was fresh however I felt like it lacked a bit of flavour. Nevertheless, still good! We also tried the mango roll and truffle prawn roll. The mango roll was delicious! It was fresh, with the perfect balance of sweet and salty. Yum! The truffle prawn roll is a must try. It's very unique and one may be thrown off by the unique flavour of the truffle. However, it's delicious in its own way! I've never tried anything like it before. We also ordered the yakitori as well. The angus yakitori was good. We liked the sauce on the side (possibly sesame sauce?). The chicken yakitori was okay - nothing special. I enjoyed my experience here and am looking forward to returning!

Great Japanese restaurant. Highly recommend the salmon sashimi, special scallop and truffle signature rolls, wasabi tako, magic steak, beef tongue with daikon yakitoro, and black miso cod. Pair it with your fave sake and you're good to go. I'm still sad that they took the ramen off the menu because apparently they also own the ramen place next door.

Great atmosphere. The tunes matched the experience perfectly. The lobster roll (forgot to take a pic) was very unique and turned out to be my favorite of the meal. We got mochi balls from the freezer by the entrance, they were hot on the bottom and frozen on the top, so just make sure to check them before purchasing. I will definitely be back!

We'd driven past Ke many times, and we finally decided to try it for a late supper. Delicious grilled yakitori (20% off after 9PM) of beef tongue, chicken meatballs, bacon wrapped quail eggs, and unagi (sea eel); the seafood and smoked duck udon soup was served piping hot; and service was prompt, pleasant, and attentive. We sat at the bar, which looks right into the open kitchen, and were impressed with what we saw.

There was no wait for our party of 4, but the restaurant was busy with lots of energy around 9pm. We were seated in a corner booth and had a nice view of the restaurant. There is also a small grocery area at the front, with Japanese favorites and some prepared foods to go. There was a nice selection of sushi, noodles, and meats, which we had some of each. I had a prime Rib and Angus skewers and both were excellent, but the magic sauce was the best on the angus. I had a bite of the tonkotsu ramen and the broth was bold, but not too heavy. Lastly, I had the bluefin tuna roll, which was a good size and so fresh, you could taste it. The blend of ingredients in this roll hit the spot. The service was great and we were in and out in under an hour.

In terms of food, I tried their Bluefin Tuna Roll, Creamy Scallop Roll, Chef's Choice Sashimi, Gyu Tan and Hotate Yakitoris. Overall, I'd give the food 8/10 - Bluefin Tuna Roll: 7.8/10: Real bluefin tuna, but overall reminds me of an avocado roll with bits of tuna, and not worth it - Creamy Scallop Roll: 7.5/10: Good flavour, but expected more like chop chop roll, especially given the price (else it's a California roll with scallop on top) - Chef's Choice Sashimi: 8.5/10: Good pieces of fresh sashimi - Gyu Tan Yakitori: 8.3/10: Good, slightly overpriced given the portion - Hotate Yakitori: 7.5/10: Nicely grilled but overpriced

A great lunch spot with excellent bowls and rolls!…read more We visited Maru Sushi and Don multiple times during our stay in Calgary, largely because my daughter absolutely loved their food. We ordered a mix of dishes across our visits, including the Sanuki Udon, the Salmon and Spicy Pork bowls, and the Philadelphia and Flower rolls. The Rolls I'll skip a detailed review of the rolls since I didn't taste them myself, but they looked fantastic. They were meticulously wrapped, and the Flower Roll was exceptionally colorful and appetizing. Judging by how eager my daughter was to keep coming back for them, they must be delicious. The Udon (Sanuki Udon. Udon just means Noodle) We ordered the Udon, and the presentation was very solid. The noodles were neatly grouped and topped with the classic agedama (tempura flakes). The dashi has a standard, formulaic taste--I certainly didn't expect a from-scratch iriko base--but it makes for a very comforting and tasty-looking bowl of noodles. The Bowls I personally ate the bowls and ordered them twice because I enjoyed them so much. The concept is a bit like a Chipotle burrito bowl, but much closer in spirit to bibimbap with a lower rice-to-vegetable ratio. It perfectly fit my goal of eating lower-carb meals. The bowls are packed with a vibrant mix of mesclun greens, cucumber, avocado, edamame, corn, pineapple, and green onions. I loved the textural contrasts: tender salad leaves, refreshing cucumber, and the chopsticks-testing edamame. A great detail was the carrots--they were lightly blanched in a sweet broth, which removed the raw bite while keeping them perfectly crisp. As for the proteins, the salmon was standard, but the Korean-style spicy pork was the standout. They got it incredibly right. It tasted very authentic with a solid 5/10 on my spice scale, and the gochujang blended flawlessly with all the vegetables. Minor Critiques I only have two small complaints. First, the red cabbage and sliced radish were unusually bitter and didn't blend well with the rest of the bowl's flavor profile. Second, opting for brown rice makes the bowl pretty challenging to eat with chopsticks; the structure of the rice is loose and dry, making it hard to pick up. However, I still managed to clean my bowl completely while waiting for my daughter to finish her meal! Verdict Overall, I really enjoyed our meals here. If I worked nearby, Maru Sushi and Don would absolutely be in my regular lunch rotation.

The store staff was alone, so you might have to wait. I chose salmon, tuna, hokkigai, and eel from Nigiri's menu, and added agedashi- tofu and miso soup. First of all, Nigiri's rice was not tasty. It's dry, and unfortunately, the fatty tuna (toro) sushi I had was sinewy and difficult to chew. The salmon had cuts on the surface, but also texture was unpleasant to chew. I didn't feel like eating any more, so I left the restaurant. If I get the chance to come here, I'll try something other than sushi.
