What an amazing evening! In fact, it was one of the best comedy events I've ever had the pleasure of attending. The evening's title was perfectly chosen: Grief n' Giggles - Coffin Up Comedy. If that name alone doesn't make you smile, the performers certainly will. Perhaps the most unexpected part of the evening was the venue itself: Victory Memorial Park Funeral Centre. Having only lived in White Rock for a short time, I had no idea this beautiful facility even existed. And before you let the words "funeral home" scare you off, don't. It's a stunning property with peaceful grounds that are perfect for a nature walk. Not exactly the first place that comes to mind when someone says, "Want to get some fresh air?" but maybe it should be. The brochure featured the tagline: "They say laughter is the best medicine, so we're throwing an event all about healing with humour -- no prescription required." Judging by the roughly 300 people in attendance, I'd say the prescription was filled. The evening was expertly hosted by Cliff Prang, who didn't miss a beat. OMG, he was hilarious. Melanie Rose and Vanessa Woznow rounded out the comedy roster, and together they delivered a night of laughter that had the audience roaring. You know how it is when you walk into a venue you've never been to before. There's the cautious step through the doorway, followed by the obligatory scan of the room to make sure you haven't accidentally wandered into the wrong event. In my case, I was greeted by no fewer than five different people: one welcomed me, two signed me in, one escorted me to the elevator, and finally there was the handsome gentleman whose sole duty appeared to be pressing the elevator button. I've never felt so important in my life. Once on the second floor, I discovered an entire reception area dedicated to mingling, complete with beautifully arranged buffet tables offering complimentary food and beverages. This came as a complete surprise since admission was by donation only. I had come prepared for comedy, not hors d'oeuvres. Needless to say, I adapted quickly. Later, the same elevator gentleman took the time to point out a beautifully handcrafted horse-drawn coffin carriage dating back to the 1890s. It was an extraordinary piece of craftsmanship and a fascinating glimpse into local history. Stunning woodwork and well worth a look. A special shout-out goes to two lovely ladies, Jeanette and Rosetta, whom I met while enthusiastically sampling the buffet. Rosetta is a vivacious volunteer at the Peace Arch Hospice Society Thrift Store, which apparently provides significant funding for the Society's programs. Another shout-out goes to the lady seated beside me, whose infectious laugh kept me laughing throughout the show. Sometimes laughter is contagious in the very best way. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the volunteers and organizers who helped make this first-class event possible. From the warm welcome to the delicious refreshments and the outstanding comedy, everything was thoughtfully planned and beautifully executed. If this was my first Peace Arch Hospice Society event, it certainly won't be my last.

In terms of costs and expenses, can't really compare since it's the first time I've been to a funeral home but they do have decent options to choose from. They do have instalment plans in case you can't pay for everything upfront. While my experiences (along with my mom's) were okay, I would heavily you do the research to see if there's a similar value but at more affordable rate.

My recollection of my earlier call was that there was little which had to be attended to with urgency. However, my son called Valley View Cemetery on the date in question, in anticipation of needing their services soon and we spoke to a salesman, Eric. Eric was friendly and seemingly helpful, but also insisted on only providing packaged quotes that added several expensive, optional items even when we repeatedly said we didn't want or need the additional services. He also made several blatant lies. If our plot wasn't pre-purchased then we undoubtedly would have brought our business to a different cemetery. Eric lied to pressure us to buy right away because, "If you do not buy our services before your mother's death then I personally guarantee that the price will be higher". In the crisis of our wife's last days, Eric's insistence that already stressingly high expenses would be even higher, I felt compelled to come to the office, pay money, and sign a contract before my wife died. This I did on June 13th. Thankfully, my wife hung on and I had returned before she took her last breath that very same day. Other staff have since confirmed that this policy isn't real and there would be no additional charge if we had waited. Eric said, "there is a [significant] charge for us to receive the body from the funeral home. This is mandatory with no other options." This is not true as the funeral home delivered the casket to the graveside and took care of all handling. Eric pushed, "You must buy the marker from us because you won't find anyone else that can provide one that matches our rules". Again our funeral directors and others at Valley View itself have confirmed that purchasing markers from other providers can be done and Valley View will provide the guidelines so this can be accomplished. When we visited Valley View we spoke to another sales associate, Garcy. Garcy was straightforward and helpful providing the services we needed without add-ons. We made the same requests as we did with Eric but our total was only slightly more than 1/3rd of what Eric quoted, and didn't include Eric's made-up, fake charges. We have seen the shocking CBC news articles on Valley View's parent company, Arbor Memorial, and found out first-hand from Eric that pushy sales tactics and taking advantage of those in crisis is alive and well at Valley View. Oh, did I mention that when we came for the internment, all the dirt was piled on top of the otherwise clearly marked graves of my parents. I and my family were unable to place flowers on their graves! When we addressed management with this issue, Austin suggested that it was our fault since we did not specifically request that this not be done. Sorry but we did not think that this needed a special request just as we didn't request the front gates to be opened.

During the traditional church service, Gwen took care of every detail and not only did she do that she checked up on me and my daughters to make sure we were doing okay. Gwen took the time to even give me a compliment which meant a lot and gave me strength during this difficult day. From the church service to the cemetery, Gwen ensured that the driver waited for our immediate family members so that we could all drive behind one another- which was extremely respectful of her and she made sure to honor our family traditions. During the funeral, Gwen organized and lead our family members so that everything went smoothly. Not only was Gwen professional, kind, patient and caring, she was also truly supportive and genuine. We will forever be thankful for her help. I would highly recommend Henderson's Langley Funeral Home.

They walk you through gently and give you private time with your loved one to prepare you (which really helped) before everyone comes to pay their respect. They never pushed anything on me and no surprises with pricing, it was all laid out and easy to understand. They really made a tragedy bearable for me and my 3 boys.
