I brought my cat, Tomasa, here who has been struggling with allergies for months. We had been taking her to Tijuana for treatment, and while her allergies and scabs were improving, they never fully healed. I decided to try Kearny Mesa Veterinary Center and I'm so glad I did. The first person who greeted us was Sara, who was sweet and welcoming. She let us know we could be seen earlier than expected, which immediately helped ease my anxiety. Next, we met Christina, who was funny, kind, and wonderful with Tomasa. She made us feel comfortable and helped make the visit a positive experience. Dr. Marissa Robertson was absolutely fantastic. She took the time to listen to our concerns and carefully reviewed all the different foods we had tried feeding Tomasa. She explained how allergies work in cats in a way that was easy to understand and reassured us that we were doing everything we could as pet parents. For the first time in months, we felt truly heard and left with a clear plan. Best of all, Tomasa has been doing great since her appointment. We're already looking forward to her follow-up visit. I was up all night into the morning with my dog, who had his first ever surgery. I took him to the nearest ER & the next morning called to inform my vet that he had been to the ER & if they could retrieve his record so they file it in my dogs file. Great tech, staff, great vets all for the exception of one front desk person who over the phone, had the audacity to complainthat I used a cuss word she admitted was not even directed at her. I had left the liquid Gabapentin medication in my backpack & when I realized it, I was on this phone with her & said "oh fk I I left the gabapentin in my backpack OMG its probably bad!" Mind you this is after the most exhausting 48 hours I have had in many years, my dog had a35 minute seizure & almost died. Distressed clients should not be treated as if they are having a corporate conversation & the staff should understand they can eve stressed, but the worst part is she understood it was not directed at her & never even peeped about its on the phone. We talked more about how the medication, the billing, etc. Her manager called me back, & to my surprise instead of clearing up my dog concerns, she informed me when I was on the phone previously team member alerted her (manager) & complained that... I was inappropriate with her over the phone & had used a cuss word. UTTER SHOCK. Yes, I am guilty as charged - while on the phone we discussed a medication that needed to be refrigerated & I JUST realized that me was sitting in my backpack. I blurted "Oh no fk I think I forgot the medication in my car". I asked her if she thought that was directed at her, it clearly was not it was directed at myself & it was truly an exhuming stressful moment slip, but hat this felt insulting to me. I was trying to explain this the manager many times but she kept cutting me off, saying even if it was not directed at her it was inappropriate explaining she needed to "protect her staff" & she would be sending me my records, basically firing me as a client. Wow. Just, wow. Kearny Mesa, your staff needs to understand we are people, we are not on th clock, we do not work for you & if we slip & say fk in the aftermath of almost seeing your dog die during a 35 minute seizure, there is NOTHTING inappropriate about that. Especially when that fk was not even directed at them, you admit that & understand that your client is in an emotional time but yet double down & say "We have a lot of clients that are stressed that do not use that language'. You would have thought that I had gone off on her, this is really petty was my reply. Saying "Oh no fk I forgot the medication in my car" in a moment of pure panic after a very stressful event in my book, ok. I am sure they will claim I said something else but this is what happened. And again, every staff person there & vet has been amazing, but this one single front desk person & the manager poisoned the well & talked to me as if I was trash for using "fk" in reference to myself. I am a working professional woman who for 23+ years now owned my own business & mentor others. I am not a child, I am a seasoned & would never leave a review unwarranted. My reputation & my other reviews speak for themselves, I am not a complainer, but this staff member had the emotions of a bot, was interrupting constantly & insulting. Come to think of it, now that I am reflecting - Not once did the manager or the woman who answered the phone who I "verbally assaulted" ask how me one single time how dog was doing. If you have a pet that is relatively young and healthy this clinic is good for general maintenance of your pet. With that said, as your pet ages I recommend you take your pet elsewhere. I recently lost my pet due to an illness that although was aggressive was seemingly missed by the team here until it was too late. My own pets health decline began at the beginging of this year and I had brought him in multiple times for various issues which at his age was already highly unusual. There were red flags over the span of multiple months that should have been caught but were disregarded as unrelated issues. They were however, happy to charge me for services that ultimately did not contribute to my pet's health outcome. Again, if youre looking for a place for a young pet this place is adequate enough. If you're looking for a place for an older pet where you expect them to track trends in their patients health then I highly recommend you look elsewhere. read more

I have brought my dog here a few times when his regular vet wasn't available. Our most recent visit was after he had surgery and we realized he had an infection. They were so caring and helpful. I couldn't get my poor old pup out and then in the car. Two of the ladies working there picked him up. The Vet took great care of him and gave me good advice. The clerks and doctors there were nice. That was about it. Way too overpriced. They advise all these things when in reality you can do this on your own with the right guidance. The medication is overpriced and they had a bunch a different fees on to your bill. I took my cat in there 3 different times. He had an ear infection and a stomach parasite that required ear drops and some powdered medicine. Had to rebuy the ear drops because it was tiny bottle and it didn't last long enough to get the infection out completely. Almost $80 a small bottle to "try" and see if it works. Then another $50 or so for the powder medicine for his stomach. With all the fees and everything it was almost close to $2000 with X-rays because they thought he had asthma. Didn't even confirm he had it or not. Then told me to come back and do a check up to see if the medication worked for a third time and was trying to charge me another $300 dollars to do the same exact thing they told me to do. Never mentioned that I had to pay again after my cat received the medication they told me to give him in order to "check" his progress. I thought check ups were included after receiving medication that was given. Also gave him some stuff for his itching when I also could have bought this stuff on my own. I felt like they pressured me into buying stuffed because they knew I was desperate due to my cat being sick. So if you wanna overspend and get a "I think this would work" then go to this place. This review is long overdue! Shout out to Dr. Diego for seeing my dog last minute back in October 2025 when he had a dislocated dew claw accident. I was able to get Trazadone a couple of hours from the vet office before seeing Dr. Diego, which really helped alleviate the anxiety my dog was experiencing. I also appreciate how Dr. Diego was not pushy about certain interventions or medications I did not have the budget to pay for. Lastly, shout out to Leslie who was the nurse who took care of my dog. Use to deal with chronic allergies with Pax, which would result in pills, ear infections, paw infections, licking and seemed like endless vet visits. Finally switched to Kearney Mesa Vet and woof, what a difference. Within the first month the new medication and program yielded noticeably less scratching, infections, and head shaking. They did an absolutely fantastic job with a ACL surgery for our 10 year old puppy. Recommend! read more

IAfter explaining what were my dog symptoms, I was given a very expensive list of procedures to follow. The list amounted to close to a thousand dollars. I explained that I have a very limited budget but was told that those were the exams needed when in fact the vet could have advised me to start with allergy pills and see if that worked and then, if it didn't, to proceed with the next test, etc. I was also told that the x rays would be over $300 but that no vet there is a radiologist and therefore it would be another $250 to have them ready elsewhere. They presented me with another blood work procedure that would also be over $350 and charge me extra for disposing "medical Waste" meaning the syringe used for drawing blood. Even after I declined, asking the vet if we could just start with the x rays and take it from there, I was given allergy pills that were over $100, when perhaps knowing my budget was very limited, they could have started me with Benadryl and see how my dog reacted. I paid my bill in cash, over $500!! Only to realized they charged me for the medical waste disposal!!! When no blood work had been done. When I asked for a refund, I was told they could only credit me the money for my next visit, and did not give me cash back, even though I had just paid cash. To add insult to injury, I when I asked to please send me an email with my paid bill and the credit showing, as well as a copy of the $300 x-rays, I was told they would email it to me. To this day, three days later, I have not received the x-rays, the invoice with the credit showing and also no call from the vet to see how my dog is doing. I hope to receive my bill with the x rays and credit showing by the beginning of the week. Otherwise, I feel like I should post my review in public. It is outrageous to me that after explaining my very difficult financial status, that exams were over $1000 right off the bat instead of just suggesting as a first course of treatment an inexpensive and perhaps efficient course of allergy pills! I've been bringing my pets here for years. They have lots of new staff now but they're all great. The vet we have been seeing recently is Dr. Harris, and he is great with the pets! He gets on their level (literally). I have two small dachshunds and he sits on the floor and gives them treats throughout their exams. My pets have gotten major surgery here, and small procedures like nail trims and vaccines. The exam fee is about $79. This spot has been recently renovated and it looks much more modern now than it did a few years back. Plus, coffee and tea in the waiting room is a plus. They also have an online pharmacy that you can use to have your pet prescriptions mailed directly to your home. read more

WARNING. They over charge for everything. They force you to get an exam every time even for a follow-up visit for the same issue (which other vet offices DO NOT do, I called around and asked) An EAR "exam" costs $60 at nearby vets... this place charges $90. Medication my dog needed was $65 online and at another nearby vet - Kearny Mesa Veterinary Care charges $90 for it. They told me my follow up visit would only be $90 and even gave me a paper print out with my follow-up exam quote - then after arriving for the visit said they wanted to do another "full exam" that my dog JUST got 2 months ago. Plus a $90 ear exam again (costing close to $300.) All for a simple ear infection. Their exam fee is also high. My advice: wait and go somewhere else. Don't go here just because they have availability. There's a reason they're so available. Don't buy any of their ear cleaning and probably any other product they sell either. It is VERY marked up in price. I compared the ear cleaner they wanted me to buy there for around $50 - and found it on Amazon for $24.99 with free one day shipping. They care more about making money than treating your animal. 0 stars. Will never bring any of my animals here again. Oh also I called and asked for a refill because my dog's ear drops ran out - they never returned my call. But they had no problem calling me 5 times to collect a payment I owed. I typically do not write Yelp reviews; however, I feel compelled to share my experience with Dr. Martinez following my visit with my cat. First and foremost, I want to acknowledge that the staff and customer service were excellent. Unfortunately, my experience with Dr. Martinez was highly unsatisfactory. I brought my cat in for an evaluation of a scab on his paw and a general check-up. She diagnosed my cat with pillow foot, and recommended testing for feline leukemia/FIV as they are associated with the disease. We agreed, and she performed an in-house SNAP test may take some time, so we left and came back after an hour. She proceeded to give us the diagnosis of feline leukemia (FeLV) in the waiting room and handed us a two-page print out and let us on our way. The patient education and empathy displayed by Dr. Martinez were notably inadequate. Instead of providing guidance and support, she handed us a pamphlet and left us to navigate the situation on our own. This lack of clarity and emotional support left me feeling confused and devastated. In an effort to understand the diagnosis, I conducted my own research and had my other cat tested for feline leukemia. The negative result for my other cat, who had been sharing food with the affected cat for over three years, led me to question Dr. Martinez's diagnosis. When I reached out to her with follow-up questions, I was informed that the blood test used was an in-house test with a reported 100% specificity rate, which supposedly confirmed the leukemia diagnosis. We asked for further testing just to be sure, but we were met with push back. She only agreed to do an additional blood test with our persistence. We ended up doing an ELISA test that came back negative, which only confused us more. We asked what other testing was available and she was unable to answer. She instead tried to convince us that our cat was indeed positive, despite the possibility of a false positive. However, we were still not convinced because 1) he was negative when we adopted him, 2) our other cat has had prolonged exposure to him but tested negative, 3) he is an indoor cat exclusively, and 4) we had a negative ELISA test. Also, he did not express any further symptoms of the disease. Even after expressing our concerns to Dr. Martinez, she fervently dismissed them and ensured he was positive. Seeking a second opinion, I had a PCR done at another clinic, along with an additional ELISA. Both tests came back negative and confirmed that my cat was, in fact, negative for the disease. While I was relieved to hear that my cat was healthy, I was deeply frustrated by the incorrect diagnosis and the emotional distress it caused. In summary, my experience with Dr. Martinez was deeply disappointing due to her inadequate patient education, lack of empathy, and poor handling of the diagnosis process. The misdiagnosis and subsequent emotional trauma could have been avoided with more thorough and compassionate care. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Dr. Martinez or her practice. read more

I've had multiple bad experiences with this vet. Majorly, I had my dog in for an expensive operation (~$3k). They called me while he was under saying he will need another $3k of dental work. It felt really unfair to put me on the spot with that decision. It seemed deceptive that they didn't mention the potential of having to do this kind of work in their initial estimate, and instead springing it on me while he was under. Some other issues I have experienced: - they emailed me the wrong info about my pets labs - the techs working there are super rude on every visit (not the front desk staff, they are nice) - they scheduled us for a suture removal, but when we got there they informed us that they were dissolvable and don't need to be removed, so we went in for nothing - In a past visit they stopped a nail trim half way because my dog was nervous and pooped during the visit (he's psycho about his nails). The tech complained about it to me like it was my fault. The encounter was shockingly unprofessional due to the number of issues I've had and how disorganized this office is, it's hard to trust them with the safety and health of my pet. I won't be going there anymore and I can't recommend them for anyone else. read more

I just wanted to share a personal experience here though it happened in '05 so I apologize in advance if my post will not be allowed. I adopted my beloved cat "Oreo" from the SD County Animal shelter in 9/05. The next day he was very ill. I.e., lethargy, wasn't eating, had pus coming out of his eye, etc. I took him to this veterinarian since I was given a free first veterinarian visit due to adopting from the shelter. Spoke to a vet here who recommended my cat stay overnight at a cost of $500. I told the vet I simply could not afford that because I was low-income and he immediately chastised me for adopting a pet if I did not have a higher income due to the costs associated w/pet ownership. I went w/a cheaper option where I was to give Oreo a liquid intravenously at home which helped him to recover 100%. However my complaint is that unbeknownst to me - this office called the shelter directly (which I had NEVER authorized.) They told the shelter that I adopted a cat and since I admitted that I was in a lower-income range that I should return my cat due to the expense of owning a pet. I only know this because this is what the shelter told me when they called. They assured me they would return my adoption fee & "try not" to euthanize my Oreo. Fast forward sixteen years later, I have a happy ending. My beloved Oreo lived the next 16 years and I gave him a great life! I remember during this time being absolutely terrified he would be taken from me and am so glad that I had him for the sixteen wonderful years that I did!! read more

Setting up the appointment was an easy experience. I work all day and can't always get on the phone to get things done so I really appreciated that they had email as an option and they were very responsive in getting my appointment set up. I arrived on time for my appointment but it seems they were running behind and that led to some waiting room time for myself and my dog. I think it was about 30 minutes before they finally called my dog. I would really recommend reassessing how appointments are set up to avoid making patients wait too long in the waiting room. Many clinics (for humans) already have this process improvement set up so that patients are usually only in the waiting room long enough to fill out forms and are called to their appointments on time. While waiting, I want to note that the clerk was a little unprofessional. I get that sitting in one spot for 8 hours can get boring but she seems to have forgotten that there were customers in the waiting room and said some odd concerning things that made raise an eyebrow on whether or not I should stay. As for the actual appointment, I thought the assistant and the vet were both very nice and considerate while checking on my dog. They were not pushy at all and didn't pressure us into anything. It was nice to have them confirm that my dog is OK and then we were on our way! I think the price for that check up was fair. I definitely got overcharged elsewhere for something similar. My only other suggested improvement is maybe tidying the waiting room up? I know the place is a bit old but it doesn't hurt to have the books nice and lined up. I am posting this review a month after having a very negative and discouraging experience with Tyler the manager and Dr. Moss (she has not returned my call and Tyler spoke on her behalf). I wanted to make sure I thought this through before I post a review. It seems every respectable vet practice will make clerical errors or misdiagnose once in a while. I just wish the vets would acknowledge their mistakes and express their apologies, and I could still continue going to them. Both Kearney Mesa Veterinary Center and VCA Animal Specialty Group (Here the Dr. apologized) dropped the ball and didn't inform us that our dog had a heart murmur. We only found out after the insurance company sent us a rejection letter. If we can't trust our doctors to inform us of test results, who do we trust? The ER doctor had the decency to apologize, but our regular vet at KM Vet, Dr Moss never called me back and the office manager Tyler blamed it on VCA for not telling us. When my dog was sick at the ER hospital for one night, we called our regular vet as we have more trust in them than the new doctors and we wanted an honest opinion on what KM Vet thought of our dog's condition as they have seen my dog in the past several years. Dr Moss said she looked at the charts and gave us her opinion, but never mentioned the heart murmur. We also went for a checkup after the ER visit and there was no mention. I even asked if they needed to look at my dog since he was in the ER recently and they said if he has no symptoms it was not necessary. Ultimately Tyler gave us a big excuse that the Dr. assumed the ER Doctor would go over the heart murmur with us and the doctors at KM Vet have no responsibility. If Dr Moss had apologized that she did not inform us or alert us to this medical issue, we would have continued with this vet office. If Tyler had not communicated the way he did by blaming the issue on another ER hospital instead of taking some responsibility to this issue, we would have stayed with KM. Dr Barre, I hope to hear from you. Are you aware of all this and is this your approved method/protocol at Kearney Mesa Vet? If so, that is quite discouraging to hear. read more

4 years ago, I brought my senior dog here and the experience, although challenging given her declining health, was mostly positive and the staff and doctor we interacted with were lovely. Today, my husband took our 2 year old dog in for a wellcheck and the experience was the polar opposite of our previous experience in 2020. Our dog is large and does take a moment to warm up to people. She saw an urgent care vet months ago, at a different place and that vet was calm and gentle and she warmed up to her within a few moments to allow for an exam. This vet however, walked in, our dog barked, he immediately withdrew and said she needed a muzzle, then said he wasn't comfortable examining her unless she was sedated with expensive medications. Our dog spends time with a dog sitter and other dogs and does absolutely fine. It's amazing to me, that someone who went into veterinary medicine wouldn't give a dog a moment to warm up to them.. when my husband said he we weren't going to sedate her for an exam, the girl reviewing the financial stuff, was rude and said ok then, and walked out. I don't write negative reviews, but this experience was one I hope others can relate to or read before bringing your pet here. It may be quick and easy to get an appointment but now I can see why. The customer service is lacking and they don't seem to have any patience. We will not be returning to this clinic, nor will I recommend to any family or friends. I hope these other negative experiences I have read about on yelp, are taken into consideration by the business owner, and feedback is shared. read more

Amending my original review. KMVC WAS a fantastic vet center, but no longer I fear. I took my dog for blood work and regular work ups after he had bloody stools and it was over $800. I thought surely their prices haven't gone up this much? THEY WERE BOUGHT BY PETVET CARE CENTERS aka a hedge fund managing hundreds of vet offices. This is no longer a locally owned practice and is being driven by a network to maximize profits. I fear the well qualified staff will run for the hills after being treated like garbage by a corporation. If you don't believe me check the footer on their website. No notification of this purchase was ever provided and I have been a client for 5+ years. What an abysmal disappointment. Whoever sold KMVC sold out and left us and our pets high and dry. read more

We are new dog parents and decided to bring our puppy here just for a check in and to confirm her previous medical record as she is a rescue. The doctor was rather rude, never made eye contact, instantly started the conversation with a spiel that seemed really rehearsed and barely let us talk. Everyone was in a hurry the entire time it felt like they were pushing us out the door when we were the only clients in the building.. red flag to start with They decided our puppy needed a few other preventative vaccines but they took her in the back for these and wouldn't let us come (so who knows what actually happened). They also fed her what seemed to be powdered cheese while in the back without asking or saying anything and gave her back with it all over her body. An invoice and information was supposed to be emailed to me and never was. I tried to call no more than 20minutes after leaving to ask about a post-vaccine symptom and the receptionist sent the phone to voicemail and closed early. Dr. Hoard at KMVC is a gem of a human. She is compassionate and attentive to the nuanced needs of each pet. We are treated as real individual people and pets. We had our last pup for many years and as she neared the end of her life our old vet's office had been purchased by a large corporation leading to a very impersonal experience with our pet. Pets near the end of their life need more care and attention. KMVC had available appointments and was most concerned with our pet's comfort and care while offering kind reassurance to us that we were doing all the right things for our beloved fur-babe. Even right to the end they helped our girl and gave the best possible attentive care. We have now adopted a new little nugget and once again they were gentle and caring with our timid new girl. Instead of insisting on all the "new pet" care be done immediately, they suggested waiting to let her settle in. Since we adopted her from the Humane Society they gave us the first visit at no charge. read more

The lead Veterinarian is a skilled professional but his business has completely let us down when after 7 years of routine visits we finally had a question outside the norm about whether our per needed to be seen. How disappointing that a Veterinary facility of 4+ Veterinarians and additional team of 10+ staff : - takes 3 days and seven attempts at communication, without effective advice of whether/what action is necessary - initially respond to requests for help with only "I have attached these photos to his file, let me know if there is anything else" - offer little to no dialogue with a trained veterinary professional besides dismissive emails towards the end of day 2 - all said and done offers addresses for emergency care elsewhere (so this IS an emergency??) or an exam 21 days in the future (so this is NOT an emergency??) This is not effective professional help to take care of our pet. This experience makes me seriously question how I can trust the practice to help me best care for my pet in anything besides a routine checkup scenario. The owner did not seem concerned about keeping our business when informed of our issue. I cannot tell you how disappointed I am in Kearney Mesa Veterinary Center. read more

50/50 When I called to have an appointment for my bunny the lady who was accommodating me sounds rude and giving me an attitude. Yet few days later there's another staff who messaged me as a reminder for our appointment, she's very helpful and accommodating. Doc. Hoard explained everything before the process of our bunny being spayed. Apparently our bunny didn't make it and had cardiac arrest during the procedure. She gave me a call and explained to me what they did. We went there and picked up are beloved bunny. The receptionist was so sorry about what happened. I just hope that they give us resources on what we could do next while we're in the process of grieving. read more

UPDATE: Because of the wasted time and misdiagnosis, my cat is now in critical condition. He won't eat or drink on his own, and the mass has invaded his nose, and is close to invading his brain. The reviews are spot on - Dr. Ronngren was amazing! I just moved to San Diego and my cat needed some dental work done that I was unable to get taken care of before moving. I was a little nervous having a procedure done by a vet I've never met or have any history with, but after reading the reviews on Yelp and having the initial exam done, I knew Rory was in excellent hands. I was extremely anxious to have my cat put under anesthesia, but she took the time to listen to my concerns and ease my anxiety. DR EMILY CROSS - ANSWER YOUR EMAILS AND PHONE CALLS! We've had our dog as a patient at KMVET for the past 8 years and we've never had experienced this level of unprofessional service and disrespect. We have now been politely waiting for results and med refills for our 15 year old dog that has been suffering for over a month now! And every time we call into the center, we are constantly being ran in circles with zero answers. Also we've asked for a call back from they're manager TYLER and have heard nothing. We've spent hundreds of dollars to care for our dog and we can't get a call back? What's it gonna take to get this resolved KMVET?! read more

Our pup has been a patient with Kearney Mesa vet for 8 years and for the most part, we've had only great experiences, until now. In JUNE we took our dog in to be seen for skin irritation which has been an on going issue. During my visit he has blood work done, and the clinic requested me to come back with a urine sample. At the appointment Dr. Cross said that she would like to review his results and come up with a plan for his chronic skin issue and even said she'd like to review his diet to ensure that his weight is healthy, as he has been losing weight in his old age. It's been a month now and I have yet to hear any results. I've called several times and have been told that "someone will get back to me" but have yet to receive a response. It's so frustrating to have put my dog through getting blood drawn, spending hundreds of dollars on tests and getting absolutely no help/results at all. We were sad to see Dr. Martinez move from Texas to California. She had been treating our 17 year old puppy since he was 7 and our other puppy that we adopted at age 11 for almost 3 years. I brought my 10-year-old Maltipoo to Kearny Mesa Vet Center because they had an earlier appointment than my regular vet, which I've been going to for 10 years. My pup was in pain, so I didn't want to wait. After a cleaning, they pulled 10 teeth. Now, just 9 months later, my dog is in pain again. I called to share my concern, and the receptionist was unbelievably rude. I politely asked if I could drop my dog off early, like before, so she wouldn't have to sit in a cage for hours. The woman rudely cut me off and actually had the nerve to say I was upset about another procedure so soon--no kidding! OF COURSE, I'm upset! Anesthesia is dangerous, and I'm worried about my dog! But I was still willing to return and pay for another cleaning and extractions. Instead, I got her nasty attitude and zero empathy. How is someone like that even working there? Management needs to seriously reconsider who they hire. This place is shady, and I'd rather pay twice as much than bring my dog back to such an unprofessional, disrespectful vet center. read more

We came to this vet to have our dogs teeth cleaned. When we first spoke to them they quoted us $700, with a possibility of it being a couple $100 more with extractions. So we agreed. I took the morning off from work. Sat in the parking lot waiting for the vet tech to take our dog. We get a phone call with the break down of the service and somehow they come up with the number $2500!!! I told them they were very misleading and we canceled our appointment and left. We now have a dental appointment at an "honest" vet hospital and we will be paying $800. Very disappointed, we will not be returning. read more

His practice got bought out by a corporation and it's gone to absolute shit. I brought my EB in today and was quoted $71 for an exam. After the "doctor" examined my dog, the bill had inflated to over $500. We are taking our business elsewhere. read more

I have been going to Kearny Mesa Veterinary Center for years. I noticed after the pandemic there was a major change at their office. Our previous doctor was no longer there and that the staff wasn't as friendly. The receptionist had an attitude over the phone even when calling to make a simple check up appointment and the clinic has visibly deteriorated - more on that later. I took my 2 yr old Great Dane (Olly) into the clinic for his annual check up maybe May-ish last year, we saw Dr. Harris (new doc). When we were there Dr. Harris was great, very friendly seemed to understand the body language of our dog. Dr. Harris was gentle and slow moving, giving our pup lots of treats to build trust. The exam went well. We discussed having our pup neutered and to do a gastropexy at the same time... Dr. Harris recommended we go elsewhere for the neuter and gastropexy, because he did not believe the doctors at KMVC were qualified/equipped to do the gastropexy surgery on such a large dog. My partner and I respected his honesty/transparency, as we treat our dogs like our children, and wouldn't want someone who doesn't know what they're doing to perform a major surgery on them... So we located a specialty surgery clinic in San Diego and scheduled the neuter there. A couple weeks later, KMVC called us to schedule Olly's neuter. I told them what Dr. Harris had relayed to us and the receptionist met that conversation with attitude and stated that the doctors at this clinic were well qualified to do the surgery. This made my partner and I VERY uneasy. How is their staff not on the same page as far as doctors qualifications... and I would most definitely take another veterinary doctors opinion over the receptionist, regarding surgery qualifications of another doctor. I took Olly back in for an annual exam a few weeks ago because he was due for it...this time we saw a relief doctor, because Dr. Harris was out of the office. The relief doctor was Dr. Nova. Olly is a COVID pup and has developed some fearfulness of new people. My partner, and I have been working diligently on this issue with training (positive reinforcement) since COVID restrictions lifted and we can go to public places again... anyway, Olly and I arrive at KMVC for his check up and we are in the room waiting for Dr. Nova. When she entered the room, Olly barked at her. I was able to quickly redirect him and get him laying down - he's no longer barking at her.. and the barking lasted for maybe a couple seconds. She immediately asked me if I thought about anxiety medication for him. I told her no, that he is still a puppy (2 years old) and we are diligently working on training because that is ultimately what he needs. She IMMEDIATELY got an attitude with me, her voice became very condescending and told me that she could see he is very aggressively reacting to her and putting him on anxiety medication would tame him. I again said no. She asked how she was going to even proceed with the exam since he was laying down. I maneuvered Olly with a treat, and kept him distracted with a treat while she did the exam. There was no compassion or understanding. I felt angry that I didn't just walk out of there. By the end of the exam Olly was comfortably laying on the ground and she even made a comment that he's doing so well and is relaxed now... Come to checking out with the tech, they included the anxiety medication on the invoice, even though I had told Dr. Nova "no" twice. The tech did scratch it out so I wasn't charged for it, but again I was very frustrated. After the appointment I received a follow up email from Dr. Nova about medicating my dog for anxiety... I felt as though she did not listen to me or maybe she didn't respect the two other "no"s I had given her. Or maybe it's the clinic trying to get more $, I have no idea. All I know is that the people at the clinic are not the same and we will never be returning. Last notes on the clinic because I said I would come back to it - the clinic has gone down hill with their presentation and sanitary standards. The clinic inside has become very run down and the waiting room is visibly dirty. The exam rooms are tiny and their exam tables do not fold up. So if you have large pets, like I do, you are VERY cramped inside. Overall, I feel as though there is no pride of ownership at this clinic any longer. I highly recommend searching else where for primary veterinary care for your most precious fur babies. read more

We just really love Dr. Barre because we can feel his genuine love for all pets. He truly spends quality time with each patient and makes sure that the vet visit is a positive experience for the pet as well as the owners. Any time we have had questions, they were fully answered because Dr. Barre is very knowledgeable and knows how to explain it in a friendly way. He's truly there because he cares about you and your pets. All of the staff are friendly, caring, and helpful. A vet visit here always honors your time and money, I'd say it's very worth coming to get your pet checked up here. The facilities are nice, easy to get to and find, has a private parking lot with marked spaces dedicated to the vet office, and is kept clean. They even have an outdoors area to wait in where your dog can roam around a bit or do their business. While we were waiting, they had complimentary water and coffee that was available to pet owners. It was only a few short minutes before we were called in, they don't keep you waiting for very long which I appreciate. If you have pet insurance, the staff are very helpful with filling out information and printing out extra copies of vaccination records if you need it. Overall, just a pleasant experience at the vet's office every time and we truly feel like we are being well cared for. I completely trust Dr. Barre and would highly recommend taking your pet to see him! read more
