I was honestly surprised and so happy to see that the owner is still there after all these years. He is one of the sweetest and kindest people ever. My mom was actually the one who recommended Henry Kee to me years ago. I recall I was working in the Fidi nearby, and was able to walk to Henry's studio within 10-15 minutes. Not sure how much pricing was 10 years ago, but I remember getting 4 photos for a passport renewal and his services seemed pretty convenient. A whole decade later, and I find myself returning back to Henry. I'm glad to see he's still around! I would recommend calling first to see if he's open if you're concerned about his hours. I asked to take passport photos again and got four 2x2 photos for $25. He accepts cash only, so come prepared. read more

I got passport photos taken at Kee Photo, and to my disappointment, the photos were rejected by the Noe Valley Post Office. The USPS person told me "you can't show teeth". Apparently, the photo violated the rule that requires a neutral facial expression. To Kee Photo's defense, it was my decision to smile, but the photographer should have told me about the requirement. I emailed Kee Photo to request a refund but didn't receive a response. Also, I find that the photos were over exposed. read more

I sought out a place to have Canadian passport photos prior to my last visit to SF. There are vastly different requirements to the US pics, so the photographer needs to be exact with the size, expression, shadows, etc. Kee Photo was great. Walked in and out within 15 minutes with exactly what we needed. $25 per person for 4 photos. His shop is pretty amazing. We have been coming here to take our photos for a long time and we hadn't had any issues for a long time until this year. Our family went to take our passport pictures and unfortunately my wife's photos were rejected by the US government for 'low resolution'. We went back and explained the situation but he immediately got offended and refused to listen to us. He kept saying that it is impossible that his photos would be rejected and started yelling at us and told us to go to hell. He was extremely unprofessional in how he reacted to the whole situation. We try to support the local businesses when we can but we won't be returning to this place again after this experience and we can't recommend this place to anyone else. We understand that he has a lot of pride in his work but refusing to listen to reason and even look at the document that we received from the US government showing that the photos were rejcted made it really difficult to communicate with him. I was looking for a place to take my passport picture and realized this place is right by the embassy. The inside is a bit crowded with a narrow walkway with a camera and photobooth background at the end of the room. The owner is in his older years now but he is still pretty efficient with the process. The total time I spent here is about 10 minutes and get pretty good quality of pictures. The only reason it took so long is that there is another customer asking the owner question and he couldn't really focus on taking the picture. Overall, I only really need 2 pictures for the passport but the cost is $25 for 4 pictures. Not a bad price for 4 pictures. read more

So, the only times I've stepped into this place was when my dad died. We needed them to blow up a picture of him -- you know, the typical Chinese-styled portraits you see at funerals. We gave him (the shop owner, I'm assuming) a picture that my mom chose and they cropped him out of it. From far away, the picture looked fine; otherwise, up close, you could clearly see it wasn't a super-clean crop out and the quality was terrible. We were charged $90 dollars for this service, which included the frame and free delivery to the flower shop (which, by the way, recommended us to Kee Photo because they claimed it was the cheapest place). We came back on a separate occasion with a different picture we wanted for his headstone. Again, he had to crop him out, but the quality of this was much better...probably because he didn't have to blow to it up to a massive size. One semi-okay experience and one good experience=3 stars. read more

I only went here to get my passport photo taken, but this adventure alone makes me give Kee 5 stars. Let me tell you the whole story. My mother, sister, and I needed photos for our Polish passports. Now, there's a whole paragraph of bullshit guidelines you need to fulfill for this. The photo has to be a certain size, with the head filling X amount of the photo, and the eyeline Y distance from the bottom of the photo, high resolution, etc etc. We first took these at one photographer in my mom's hometown. Turns out the Polish consulate changed the guidelines since we last called and the photos were incorrect. Photo round 1: discarded. Okay, so the guy at the consulate assured us he could take the photos with his digicam when we came to fill out our paperwok. Turns out he was doing this illegally and pocketing the money for himself. Photo round 2: discarded. The consulate apologized and told us to send in new photos. I went to Kee. I told the photographer everything they told me, he took the photos, double-checked the measurements on his computer, made sure everything was up to par, and I sent them in. My sister and mother went to someone else. Round 3 of their photos? Too low quality. Discarded. They had to get photographed a fourth time for this circus to end. My Kee photos? Good as gold. I came across Kee Photo when I searched Yelp for "cheap" and "visa photo." I phoned on the 1st day of Chinese year and to my surprise owner (Kee?) answered my call - nice! I found out six (6) 2inch x 2inch standard passport photos cost $12, and would only take 5 minutes. This is a steal compared to only two (2) for $9.99 at Walgreens. So, I decided to stop by during work the next day since just as awesomely, Kee is just about a 15 min-walk away from Embacadero BART station. My experience at Kee was overall great. Like others said, quick, no frills. You tell him what you want, he takes the photos, edits them, shows you a few shots from which to choose your favorite, and prints the pics - all in a flash!! Did it only take 5 minutes? No. But that's because just my luck, 2 ladies walked in literally 5 seconds before me, both wanting 2inch x 2inch pics just like myself. All 3 of us took about 15 minutes total, which I guess then comes to ~5 min per person. I'll definitely come back here, and would recommend Kee Photo for fast service at affordable prices! I went here once in 2002 with one of my ex's who was deathly ill. Took some pictures and paid the extra $5 for 1 hour expedite return. The counter person tells us to come back at 6pm. We get food for 2 hours in the cold windy rain, come back, but they closed at 5pm. Needless to say we were pissed. Not only that, but came back the next day and said I wanted my $5 back for them telling me the wrong time. Counter woman say's "NOPE I said 5pm". Enjoy your one star losers. read more

Great passport photo alternative to Kinko's and other mass-market places. I like posing for photos as much as I like picking up dog poo. But this place was awesome. For $12 they take 3 digital photos and print the one you like best. Since taking a good photo of me is, um, a challenge, it took us awhile before we got our shot. The photographer (Henry) put me totally at ease and was very nice and extremely patient. He even threw in a gift for me -- my passport photo imposed onto a 2007 calendar frame. Hilarious. I should mention that I also used Kinko's passport photo service and was so unhappy with the experience that I tossed the two mugshots that cost me $15 in the Kinko's wastebasket on my way out of the store, and found my way to Kee's as a result... read more

The photographer is a bit stiff in his manner, but hey, he's taken pictures of the president (which he repeatedly mentioned) so I guess he might be annoyed when I presented him with the canadian passport requirements printout from the website. My passport photos were accepted, and I'm no longer an II, yay! (I live in SOMA and tried previously: UPS store - they just laughed at me and said sorry we can't do it shadow behind the ear Walgreen's - tried to take the picture saying they would photo shop out the shadow behind my ears but couldn't get their machine to line up my head in the box... Mountain View Costco - refused to do canadian passport photos SF Costco - refused to sign the back of the picture ) Summary: This guy gets the job done, with no hassle. My dad took me, my sis and bro here to take passport pics and this guy was cool. He did a good job on the pics. Yes I was one of those high school girls who came here to take studio pics with gfs. Back then and I do mean back then (early/late 90's), it was great! Lots of backgrounds and props to choose from, prices were decent, pics came out great! No complaints here. Went here to get pics reprinted without a negative. He took a picture of my picture to make a negative. The pics came out just like the original. And he only charged $5 for the negative. The reprints were maybe 30 cents each. I so loved this place! This was the place that I always go to to get any reprints and to get a negative made. Went here again 5 years ago. And I shouldn't have done this but I did. I brought my daughter's school pics here to get a negative made and some reprints. I went back a few days later to pick them up and he told me the main machine he used has been broken and he had to use his backup machine. I looked at the pics and they were HORRIBLE! All the colors were bright and my daughter's face was orange! Oh this experience just gets better. He then tells me that he'll give me a discount and will only charge me $15 for the negative. WTF?!?! I know times are rough but from $5 to $15? I don't think so. And each pic was like 50 cents. Oh hell no! He said to leave the original pic with him and he'll try again. I went back a few days later and the pics still looked slightly the same and my daughter's face wasn't as orange. He didn't charge me for the negative. Lesson learned. You can bet I NEVER did this again to try and save $40. The 2 girls that were working here at this time were so rude! The only good thing I have to say is that one of them had pretty contacts the times I saw her. She had a purple one and a really nice light brown one. I've never been able to find this brown colored contacts anywhere. Won't come here again. He was good and cheap at one point. But not anymore. What happened???? I am so glad there are so many other options out there these days. But if you do need to get your passport pics done, come here. I doubt he can mess that up right? I could be wrong though. read more

So again, I call up Henry, being the generous person he is, he patiently waits as I rush all the way to downtown San Francisco, and I make it just in time. Canadian Passport photo: 2" x 2.75" - fast and easy. I walked in after reading this was the place to go for Canadian passport photos. (I'd already gone somewhere else, explained the photo sizes I needed, the woman said, yeah no problem and then processed the photos and handed me 2"x 2" photos.) I made a mistake of taking the negative comments about Kee Photo to heart and spent many dollars trying to get Canadian passport photos at Adolph Gasser and various UPS Stores - without any success. (Why are Canadian passport photos so difficult anyway? Seems Canadian authorities are really picky and have really scared these photographers!) So, I reluctantly went to Kee Photo, and guess what? He knew what he was doing. He took the photos exactly as instructed and was totally nice. (And at $15, well worth it.) So fellow Canadian San Franciscans - don't listen to the haters on this board. Run, walk, snowshoe or toboggan to Kee Photo the next time you need to renew your official Canuckness. I used to come here a lot when I was in high school with my friend and we would come and take pictures. It was cool because they had props and a good number of background scenes to choose from. It is small and crowded though. The prices are cheap and the processing is fast and reliable. The photographer is always nice and friendly. The pictures come out great! read more
