My experience here was pretty bad. First I attempted their online ordering which is terrible because they have a minimum order amount but do not let you choose to just pay the minimum amount. Like the website literally will not let you advance until you meet the minimum but again you cannot just choose to pay the minimum. So I ordered two of what I wanted one of, knowing the second will sit in the bottom of a drawer for like six months until it goes into the recycling. I know they have to cover their expenses but what a waste, propagated by a poorly designed website. Next I get the photos and they are dark like a full 35-40% darker than the files I prepared. Side note I'm a professional who has been preparing files for print for well over 25 years. So for my money the value was terrible. I paid more than I wanted, for more photos than I needed which are unusable because they are too dark. I don't know if going in and ordering would have had any affect on the ultimate outcome, the prints but I definitely don't recommend uploading and using their website it's terrible and honestly I'm not going to waste anymore money giving this business a second shot. read more

I originally came here for the Photo Booth because someone told me about it. It's card only and also accepts Apple Pay. The photo experience was cool and very fast. While we were waiting for the film to develop we walked around the store. The film options this store provides is awesome. The prices are fair for the assortment offered. There are many variations of B&W film, colored film, as well as Polaroid film. I asked the associate about development prices and they were very patient and knowledgeable. The development prices are great, better prices than some stores in the South Bay. The turn around time is a couple days which is to be expected. They even have an option for digital prints. I'll definitely continue to come here. read more

Would not recommend for their framing services. Came here to get a photo printed and framed with one of their custom frames. For the price you pay, the service is very lacking. For the photo printing, you email a copy of the photo and they show you what the photo will look like, and you go over the sizing. I was told the photo quality was great and on the computer it looked like the resolution was good especially for an iphone photo. They notify you when the photo is done and then you return to discuss which frame, mat size, and type of glass you want. The photo was extremely pixelated. I'm not sure how that didn't even raise any questions for them. Luckily, I inquired about it and they reprinted the photo after checking the photo quality again. When I went to pick up the frame, they showed me a package that had the right frame but wrong photo! It was a portrait of someone else, most likely someone's grandmother. I told them that's definitely not my photo and they apologized and said they'd try to figure out what happened. Went back a third time to finally pick up the frame and photo. Frame is right, photo is correct, but there's specks of dust under the glass and the mat has a couple smudges... And they framed the photo in a way that you cannot take it apart... At this point I'm not going back a fourth time. Having paid close to $300 for this I'm very disappointed in their service. To say their attention to detail is lacking is an understatement. read more

cute b&w strip~~ but just know that once you pay (can pay w apple pay) the countdown starts right away and countdown is SO fast between each picture. It takes about 2.5 minutes for your picture to print. It tells u where to look but I still missed where the camera was LOL. As of this post it was $7.50 one print. read more

I paid for them to develop 3 rolls of film. it was a really simple process going in and having them take my order and the people at the front were super nice! unfortunately, one of my rolls ended up being messed up so they obviously didn't develop it. which is fine, but like... I basically paid over $70 for them to develop 2 rolls of film..? idk, maybe I'm not getting what their process was. if they actually did the amount of work it takes to develop 3 rolls then that's fine but from my end, it seems like they just took the roll that couldn't be developed, repackaged it, and gave it back to me..? I'm not even necessarily mad, cause I'm sure they put in the work for my film- I just want an explanation/reasoning for what happened and why it still cost over $70 to NOT develop one of my rolls. maybe some of it was developed??? either way, I would really like to hear back from the folks here! read more

Ok. Sometimes I go to a business that is expensive, and I am grumbled as I take out my cash (usually I still use the cash). Photoworks not an exception. But I will say, as the saying goes, "you get what is you pay for." If you want develop and scan at very highest quality, come here. I had handed my rolls to them one day, and all of sudden I became very nervous. I was staring at the counter, eyes open very wide. I told young man, handsome one with the glasses, "do you swear to not show these to anyone, these pictures?" Quickly he smiled at me, which anyone will say will make you relax. "We are hear to take care of your photos, Pasquale, not to judge." Maybe he "has seen it all", working in this part of town. I'm not saying there was anything wrong in these photos. That's between me and my friend Paul to know. Just strange to think some nice people know what you do on your fishing boat, in your private times. read more

Since moving to the bay area in February, Photoworks has been my go to film processing shop. The shop itself is small, but it has a great selection of film (even with the 35 mm shortage right now). More than the film selection though, the turn around time of the lab is great. As an anecdote, I dropped of 9 rolls of film on a Monday a few weeks ago (a mix of 120 and 35m) and the team there was able to turn it around within a week, which is incredible. The scans are always great and the shop makes it really easy to download your pictures. The staff has also been super friendly and have let me know about various film events in the city which has been super nice as relatively new person in San Francisco. Looking forward to visiting this shop frequently in the future read more

I've been a loyal customer of Photoworks for the last ~8 years. Typically, I find they do a good job and I'm especially happy with the coloration they get on Portra film. However, a word of warning: Photoworks made a massive mistake on my latest batch of film and ruined 8 rolls. I'll use Dave (the owner)'s words here from an email I received: "I am very sorry to say that we had a film developing error in our lab that has caused several rolls of film to be very underdeveloped. This includes your film scans that you received today. Your scans will look very discolored and underexposed. The issue in our lab has been corrected, and I am again sorry that we did not catch the problem fast enough." I appreciate that Photoworks reached out proactively to apologize and that they offered a refund (yet to receive) and fresh rolls. However, the loss of 8 rolls of Portra film from a bucket list national park trip stings tremendously. If I was a professional photographer, I would no longer trust Photoworks to develop client-facing photos. It's extremely unfortunate for a place that prides itself on quality (and sets a price that reflects that). read more

Walked in today for a price inquiry. Staff was very stand off-ish and non committal. My partner and I have spent probably a couple of grand at this place over the past years - so we shouldn't be strangers - and actually live in the neighborhood. We recently bought some art that deserves good frames and so I walked in to just ask. It's a big piece so I will not just schlepp it in. All they could tell me that it's going to be between a few hundred and a few thousand. I had to ask to see if they can help me look at a few frames and then the guy just said; well this one is Hand made; it's very expensive. I felt like Pretty Woman shopping on Rodeo drive. But essentially I was at a point where I wanted to tell them if I can afford that painting the frame shouldn't be an issue.... read more

I live in the Bay Area and saw this place on Tik Tok. As a former photography nerd I knew I had to check it out. When we arrived, it was very clean and spacious inside Nice location and parking was easy to find. Photos were fairly inexpensive to be in a tourist city, so that was pleasant surprising. They had lots of options for purchasing film and the ones you took in the booth, like frames and a digital copy. The clerk helped my friend with some film purchases and she said that they were very patient and helpful! Overall a great experience at Photoworks and I will be taking all of my friends that come to visit! read more

It's difficult to find a film-processing lab these days, let alone one that will process even just 35mm film for a reasonable price. It used to be that CVS or Walgreens would develop your film for like $10 per roll. So I looked up local film developers and landed on photo works despite some not-so-great reviews about the staff being rude. I didn't experience that, however the only reason this review isn't 5 stars is that it was VERY pricey, and while I can respect a business' choice to set their prices (since we live in a late-stage capitalistic ___scape), the problem that I had was that the prices weren't super clear. It said on the pricing menu that base quality digital scans were one price, and then next to that it said that better quality scans were a dollar or so more (or so I thought). Apparently the second column was meant to be in addition to the first, not just a separate price for the better quality scans. So I ended up paying what felt like double for my 6 rolls of film. Maybe it's my mistake, idk. The scans were great quality except for one roll that perhaps I mistakenly mislabeled as color but was actually B&W because they all came out purple. Again, I think maybe that was my error for labeling all 6 rolls as color when one or two might have been B&W. Whoops! Other than that good quality and aside from pricing confusion, I'd probably go there again and be more thorough about labeling and questions about pricing. read more

I've been coming here for a few months now and I really have enjoyed developing my film here. I get 35mm film done here, and it comes out to $20 for develop + scan (high quality JPG) + keep negatives. It does take about a week, which is annoying, but I enjoy what I get from the price. The website they send you is very straightforward. They also have a good selection of film stock available at slightly more expensive than what you can get at B&H. Only thing is is I wish they would print itemised receipts. read more

Good selection of films yet pricey and sometimes standoffish, bordering on surly, customer service. Case in point: when asked why they refrigerate some films and not Polaroid SX-70/600 films, even though the manufacturer states they should be stored refrigerated as listed on the item's packaging, the clerk's answer was that they can't because they contain a "battery"....WHAT/HUH? At $25 a pop for 8 exposures and above the suggested retail price that Polaroid charges, they most certainly should be stored flat in a refrigerator to prolong their usability, but that concept doesn't seem to be clear with staff here. This isn't BestBuy, but rather a store dedicated to photography and one that has a refrigerator with films available, cold stored behind the register. I get that resources for photographers in San Francisco have dwindled to fewer options in recent years. But top tier pricing should come with top tier service, which judging from my experience and others who have posted on here about variable processing results, is an enigma here. read more

I think they're a decent enough lab, not as good quality as FotoExpress in San Jose, but not bad at all. They are fast and I like that their system remembers repeat customers, makes pick up and drop off quicker. Also their selection of film in the store is so fun to peruse! They have stocks I've never heard of, and expired films too. However the service is pretty cold and unfriendly, as others have commented. It's not a huge deal but I'll continue going to FotoExpress since the price is similar, the quality is better, and Henry is the man. read more

I came in today to develop some film but needed support in winding up the film prior to removing it out of the camera. The lady at the front desk wasn't friendly and as she began winding the film she broke the winding stick. I understand she isn't responsible for breaking it since I asked for her help but she showed little to know compassion for breaking my camera. My friend also came to purchase film and she was very rude in her responses to his questions. I won't be coming back for my negatives after getting my film develop nor will I be coming back at all. read more

Even though the store was empty and there were three people behind the counter, I was told they couldn't look in the back right now. This place only has good reviews cuz of its aesthetic. I've never had my film come out so washed and grey until I took it to this place. On top of that, they take over a week to develop and if you ask to do the rush fee and get it quicker, they can get it to you 2 DAYS earlier than they say. Every other place does rush fee services either that day or the following day. On top of all this. The customer service I've experienced here has been extremely poor. Last time I went in here it was better, but the first time it was terrible and the women was extremely rude. I recently got into film and wanted to try different places to see how the scans came out. Photoworks is very timely on their scans, however, the quality isn't all that great. There's an inconsistency amongst photos and I don't believe it's the film as similar photos yielded different quality. There was a rather odd green tint amongst all of the photos, and I thought that it was because it was overcast. However that wasn't the case because comparing two of the photos that were taken during overcast settings, one had nice deep colors with that tint while the other one looked washed out. Aside from the photos itself, the service was mediocre. Never received a receipt nor double checked my order with me. It was my first time at this location and still rather new to film. I don't remember the employees name, but he had that pretentious vibe when he asked "Are you new here?" Needless to say, not very satisfied with the services here and will be continue my search or go back to the first developer (Oscar's Photolab! Very helpful employees there). read more

Not a negative review, just a neutral comment; the medium format scans, though they look great, are just a little too small for my liking. They're smaller than a typical iphone camera picture and, strangely, smaller than the offered scan size for 35mm film. I don't know how that works, unless they're scanning on two different machines. I wanted to go with them since they're local, but I'll keep mailing my film elsewhere for scans 4x larger. read more

I've spent some serious dough here, having three custom magazine framed, and developed/bought a few rolls of film. Ive walked in before and felt that the employees were almost looking at me as if i was going to steal something? Not to mention that there were three of them just standing there looking at me - no greeting, no asking how they can help me. On another occassion i grabbed some film, and went to the register to check out, but not until the person at the register finished whatever they were doing on their cell phone for about 3 minutes, and then they proceeded to help me with checkout. The quality of their work is fine, but the staff and management desperately needs to be trained. read more

I am a regular. They have developed hundreds of rolls for me with zero problems. We're lucky they are around. (They do most stuff, e.g., Eastman XX, but not b&w transparency, which nobody does anymore.) Highly recommended. read more

I ordered 2 rolls of deluxe JPG scan in the store, they sent me the files with standard scans which have much lower resolution. I called the store to double check, and eventually Dave called me and said he was 1000% sure they gave me the deluxe scan. I downloaded all files again, and they were indeed standard scans. So I called the store again, and this time Dave said he checked the wrong order, and they did send me standard scans... and Dave agreed that he would be able to do a full refund of 2 rolls of deluxe JPG scan. I didn't received the refund when I went to the store to pickup films after a week. So I asked a staff to double check whether or not there was a refund on my last order. She said yes, and saying that it would take a long time since it was electronic refund. After waiting for another 3 weeks, I still didn't get the refund. So I called the store, and I was told that there was no refund processed on my last order at all... I don't know how Dave, the owner of Photoworks and one of their staff could cheat their customer like this. read more

I don't doubt that they may do quality work, but boy was I surprised to find out my money isn't good enough for them. I came in to get a new mat board cut for my frame + artwork, and was turned down. "We only do complete jobs" (or something along those lines) was what I was told. In other words, they would not do any matcutting for me unless I had them also make me a custom frame and glass. I was floored. I'm almost surprised they didn't insist my art wasn't good enough and also demanded they would have to handle getting better art for my walls. Just as well... I found exactly what I needed, online, for only $40 AFTER shipping. read more
