My teenage kid wanted to try surfing - he is not into sports and at that age where everything is "meh" so it was a great surprise for us. We looked for a place in West Maui for support and found Keep it Simple in Napili. We booked semi-private lessons for 3 of us online through their website. We received a text the night before the lesson what to bring and a map pin on where to meet for the lesson - this was super helpful as we never surfed and had no idea of the surfing spots. We arrived 10 min early and our instructor, Mario, was already there, assuring us that we arrived at the right place. He first provided super detailed instructions on how to handle the board, get on, paddle, turn, stand and get off at the beach for about 15 minutes, and we later learned that every single piece of advice from Mario was absolutely needed to better navigate ourselves in the water. My son was able to stand on his first try and managed to surf for quite a bit on the next several waves - Mario made sure he watch and give him tips after every ride so that he would improve each time. My husband and I were also able to stand a couple of times, and they got to do a dad-son surf together, which was so amazing! I am so-so swimmer and a scaredy cat but Mario had the ultimate patience and knew how to calmly teach/encourage so that I can continue to try and enjoy the feeling of standing on water. Mack, the other instructor from Keep it Simple, was also in the water with a different family and he was also great giving us useful tips while we went back and forth. All of us had a wonderful time and we are ready to have another lesson with Keep It Simple next time when we are in Maui. My partner booked a group lesson for 4 on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at 8am (it was originally at 1030am but the waves were better at 8am, so off we went!). Before arriving they ask for your shoe size and your shirt size (rental rashguards and feet covers to make sure you don't slice your feet on sharp rocks). They provide the 12 foot heavy surfboard with guide marks on them - so just pay attention during the lesson and you'll know what you have to do! Mario and Austin were our instructors for the two hours - they're both extremely knowledgeable and helpful guides to the water - helping with the most complex part of the entire journey - detecting and catching the waves themselves. You start off on the beach practicing the right technique needed to surf - and before you know it, you're in the water and staring down the waves themselves. But don't worry! Mario and Austin are your watchful eyes and guides - they're both trying to make sure you maximize your time on the waves! Overall, I only caught a couple of waves where I didn't completely fail and fall off... but my partner surfed some pretty epic waves, and all of us had a great time overall. They also offer you a photography package for an additional fee. Fisher has the gear and the skill to make you look good - even when it's clear that it was definitely my first time surfing. And yes, for the record: surfing is easier than learning to snowboard... and this is coming from a ski-loving Canadian! read more

After reading all the great reviews, we booked a semi-private surf lesson for our three kids (ages 20, 17 and 13) with Keep it Simple. Mack and Mario met us promptly at 8am at a popular spot south of Lahaina. After getting suited up and teaching them some surfing basics they hit the water. My wife and I were amazed how quickly each of them were up on their longboards and riding the waves! We were so glad we booked the semi-private with Mack and Mario for our three kids. They were both so attentive, offering tips and guidance and the occasional push to get them going! Our kids raved about what an awesome time they had and how they definitely want to do it again on our next trip! I had my first surf lessons with Mario on the Christmas morning and it was the best gift of all times. I appreciate that they accepted my request at 5 pm for the next day 8 am, very short notice. I can not say enough good things about Keep It Simple Hawaii. We did a tour and our guide was Matias, who we found found out late in the day was the owner. Matias was a great guide and host. He is personable and incredibly knowledgeable about Maui and Hawaii in general. Ours was a half day tour (that actually lasted about 8 hours - more on that in a minute) during which time we were in a very comfortable van. The stops we made were each incredible. I won't give details, because we had no idea going in that we would be doing some of the things we did. But suffice to say, every stop was some combination of interesting, fun, adventurous, beautiful, informative. Matias kept saying "The road to Hana is not about getting to Hana, but about everything you can see on the way." Now, about those extra couple of hours. We had mentioned early on as we passed Moma's Fish House that we tried to get reservations, but they were booked through November. As we got close to passing Moma's on the way back, Matias asked if we wanted to stop in and see if we could get a table for a late lunch. We all figured that there was no harm in trying, and sure enough, we got a table. The food was incredible, Moma's definitely lives up to its reputation. So, thanks to that simple suggestion, based on a snippet of discussion from 5 hours earlier, we got to eat the best meal we had in Maui. Thank you Matias! My BFF and I went to Maui this month. Since it was her 1st time, we decided to make the most of the time there, and scheduled a private tour of Hana. It was AMAZING! We did so much from the moment we stated, to the very end of the tour, every part was an enjoyable experience. BLOODY NIGHTMARE EXPERIENCE!!! I signed up for their semi private session with my husband on 8/21 and ended up going to the emergency room with a deep cut wound stitched in my groin area and couldn't walk for days. I was shocked by how unqualified the trainer was and how heartless the owner acted toward my injury. 1. During the beginning of the session, the trainer told us that "the dominant foot to be at the front of the board". We were puzzled as we've taken classes before and knew that this was definitely wrong, we checked again with the instructor and was told "oh that doesn't matter". I should have trusted my instinct and stopped the lesson right away and I can't regret more now. BTW, the instructor name was something like "Alexander" but he was not fluent in English and no name similar to this was mentioned in previous review so I guess he may just "start" as instructor. 2. The instructor didn't give sufficient training, and there was big language barrier. He didn't even explain the process clearly. He taught us to "jump" quick to stand up on the board and that's also rare compare to a step by step practice for beginners. 3. It was just my first round of practice for the class, he put me in area pointing to rocks and told me to paddle when wave came. I did as instructed but unluckily the wave was so strong that I got SMACKED INTO THE rocks area, I GOT 1 Inch deep puncture wound in my groin which kept BLEEDING. URGENT CARE WOULDN'T TAKE ME AS IT WAS SO DEEP SO I NEEDED TO HEAD FOR EMERGENCY ROOM! I got my wound stitched and COULDN'T WALK FOR FOUR DAYS! 4. After I got injured, my husband was still practising in water. The instructor guided him to me with the same route with no safety caution and he got smacked again in the same area WHERE I GOT INJURED BAD! He got his head hit but luckily no serious injury. 5. I CALLED THE OWNER RIGHT AFTER THE INJURY and all he said was " YOU SIGNED THE WAIVER, you can do whatever you want". After finishing up with the stitch, I texted my wound picture and expressed my concerns about POOR TRAINING AND SAFETY CONCERNS AS THAT ROCK AREA IS NOT SAFE FOR SURFING CLASS, and just to get ACCUSED BY THE OWNER THAT I GOT INJURED IN A UNCOMMON AREA, and I didn't PARTICIPATE WITH PHYSICAL PADDLING?! HE EVEN ACCUSED AS IT WAS ALL MY FAULT AS NO ONE GOT HURT BEFORE. (My husband got hit by rock same area same day, just reminder) PLS STAY AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS! Unqualified instructor, heartless owner COULD END U IN SEVERE INJURY OR EVEN WORSE. AND ALL HE GOT TO SAY IS "u signed the waiver". read more

He showed us numerous spots that were free of tourists and knew everyone from the stands we stopped at. He also catered to all of our families interests, like showing us a very cool arboretum for our families interest in the native plants! Every detail we showed interest in he found a way to show us how the locals do it!
