This is somewhat about the Keller Auditorium as well as the Back To The Future show I went to. It was one of the best live performances I have been to (and I've seen some good ones). I almost didn't stay for the second half because of some early morning obligations I had the next day, but so glad I did- because it was amazing! The likeness of the performers to the actors in the movie wasn't exact but accurate. The dialogue was fun, had spurts of relate-able content to the modern-day audience, but didn't veer off of character too far. And the DeLorean + lights show! Seriously and unexpectedly loved it. And the Keller staff did such an amazing job of herding us all around before & after, while getting drinks, and during the intermission. It was a bit miraculous. What show is next? ;-) read more

I flew in to see Phantom with my daughter. It was my first time here and was assigned parking about a 20 mins walk. I didn't know there were parking right across the street! It was a little intimidating walking in the dark by ourselves. But at least I now know there are parking closer to the Keller Auditorium for the next time. We got to the door about 10 minutes before curtain call. I was surprised that the line moved quick and with ease. Once we got in, we decided to stop by the souvenir shop after the show and opted to use the restroom on the left side. There was a line of 9 people ahead of us. We stood in line only to find out that it was ONE stall. That explained the long wait. Wish the ushers or staff let people know that there was a ladies lounge on the other side with more stalls. All I heard was that there's restrooms upstairs but it's the same. My impression was that this venue was not equipped for a big crowd. It wasn't a humongous venue and it looked like all or most seats has a good view. We sat on the left side, 7 rows back on the aisle. I think those seats was perfect because we were close to the stage but still far enough back so we can absorb everything. My chair was comfortable and was roomy. I think the lady behind me wasn't too comfortable. She was kinda tall and kept bumping her knees on the back of my seat. My suggestion to taller people, try to get the end seats. That way you can kinda stretch out a little and not be uncomfortable during the show. read more

Dear Keller Auditorium of Portland, Oregon I write to you not as a stranger, but as someone who has known your seats from the sticky shoes of childhood field trips all the way to a recent Christmas night where the whole place felt like it was vibrating with life. You have history stitched into your walls. You first opened your doors back in the early twentieth century when Portland was still shaping itself into the city it is today. You have been rebuilt and renewed after fire and time did their work, and now you stand proudly as part of the city's performing arts heart, hosting everything from Broadway productions to symphonies that make grown adults forget what day it is. They say you can hold close to three thousand souls at once, and on the right night it feels like every single one of them is breathing in rhythm with the stage. I have been inside you many times over the years, starting as a kid on school field trips where everything felt massive and important, even the carpet. Then more recently, this past Christmas, I walked back through your doors and you were absolutely packed out. People everywhere. The kind of crowd where you start wondering if you should have trained for this like an endurance sport. The smell of roasted peanuts hit me like a memory I did not know I had. I grabbed some and immediately decided life should include more roasted peanuts in general. I also picked up a Christmas ornament that honestly felt like it belonged in a museum of personal victories. Somewhere in the shuffle, someone dropped something near the aisle and in true holiday spirit, it turned into a whole moment. A man slipped just slightly, kicked a can of peanuts into the air like it was part of the choreography, and suddenly the whole section was laughing like we were all in on the joke together. It was beautiful chaos. Parking, I will say with love, is its own kind of performance art. Tight, competitive, and requiring a bit of strategy. Worth it, but you earn your seat before you even reach it. Inside, the orchestra was absolutely on point. Clean, powerful, and precise in a way that makes you remember how much discipline lives behind every note. I will admit something honestly. It was a little warm in there. Not uncomfortable, just enough to make you lean back and surrender a bit. At one point the music was so good and so steady that I drifted off. Just for a moment. My partner gave me a little bump to bring me back, but I swear that half asleep moment was one of the most peaceful parts of the entire night. That is not a complaint. That is a compliment to the sound. I have seen people leave reviews calling you three stars without much explanation and I cannot help but wonder if they missed the point entirely. This is not just a building. This is work. This is rehearsal. This is years of people dedicating their lives to making something precise and emotional and alive. If someone walks away and only notices the seat or the temperature, I think they might be looking in the wrong direction. You are not perfect in a sterile way. You are better than that. You are alive in the way a place should be when art is being made inside it. Five stars from me. Not just for the show, but for the laughter, the peanuts flying through the air, the sleepy moment of peace, the history in your bones, and the way you still manage to hold a full house like it is nothing more than a good conversation. First visit to Keller Auditorium, and overall, it was a strong first impression. My wife and I attended opening night of Les Misérables, so this was likely close to a full house, around 3,000 people. Even at that scale, the venue never felt unmanageably crowded. The flow of people was handled well enough that one could still move about without feeling swallowed by the crowd, which says something positive about the layout and staff management. The staff throughout the evening were friendly, polished, and professional. That matters more than people sometimes realize. In a large performing arts venue, the tone is set quickly, and Keller managed to feel elegant without becoming stiff or socially intimidating. For a well-known musical in a prominent Portland venue, the atmosphere was surprisingly accessible. The range of dress made that clear. Some attendees were in jeans and a T-shirt, some added a sport coat, and others arrived in full formalwear. The venue allowed for the occasion to feel special without implying that everyone had to perform sophistication in the same way. The building itself carries a certain visual dignity. Alcohol, coffee, and tea were available for purchase, and access to the seating areas was well organized. Guests could take the stairs or the elevator, and there was an elevator attendant present to help direct people to the correct level. Small detail, but useful, especially in a large venue where confusion can build quickly before a performance. Our seats were in the second balcony, Section C, against the wall. The seats themselves were soft enough, but the leg room was extremely limited, tighter than an airplane seat, which becomes more noticeable the longer one is there. What impressed me, however, was the acoustics. Even from that distance, the sound quality was excellent. The music carried well, the vocals remained clear, and the production lost far less sonically than I expected from upper balcony seating. What those seats did lose was immersion. From that height and distance, one experiences the musical more as an observer than as a participant in its emotional force. You can appreciate the scale, hear the performance clearly, and recognize the quality of the production, but the immediacy of the drama is softened. For a production like Les Misérables, where emotional engagement is part of the power of the evening, distance matters. The most significant weakness of the experience involved the women's restrooms in the upper balcony. This was not something I merely noticed in passing; it directly affected my wife, along with many other women in line. Intermission was only 15 minutes, and there were still roughly 30 women waiting as time was running out. For a venue of this size and reputation, that is a meaningful design or capacity problem, not a minor inconvenience. A theater can have elegance, strong acoustics, and professional staff, but if a basic logistical issue disrupts intermission for a large portion of the audience, that deserves mention. Overall, Keller Auditorium left me with a favorable impression: elegant but approachable, professionally run, acoustically strong, and capable of hosting a major production without making the evening feel chaotic or exclusionary. That said, upper balcony seating comes with real tradeoffs: restricted leg room, emotional distance from the stage, and at least in our experience, inadequate women's restroom access during intermission. Would I return? Yes. But next time, for something like Phantom of the Opera, I would pay more for better seats. At a certain point, being able to hear well is not the same as being pulled into the performance. For that, proximity matters. read more

We attended George Balanchine's The Nutcracker (performed by the Oregon Ballet Theatre) 7:30 on a Friday. We arrived in the vicinity 6:35pm and found street parking near SW 3rd Ave near Terry Schrunk Plaza. We only had to pay ~$2 until parking was free after 7pm. We saw after the show that Keller has a parking garage but all the cars were backed up trying to exit. On the Oregon Ballet Theatre website, they say that 1 hr prior to curtain, an OBT historian explains the performance. It's called pre-show or performance perspectives. I highly recommend getting there early to hear it! It made us be more invested in the show and informed. We learned what was underneath the rat costume and that the bed was operates by a person underneath. You just walk into the theater and sit anywhere for the pre-show. We were seated 2nd Balcony Box A, row A (at the front). It's nice because you're in a private section with 9 other people. There's a clear view of the stage as well as the orchestra pit. I did have to lean forward and sit up to see past the railing because I'm on the short side. There are bathrooms on each floor. read more

Listen .. this venue is top notch but oh my heavens, you HAVE TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THE RESTROOM SITUATION. Prior to the show the lobby was jammed packed with people (could barely move around) while waiting to head to our seats. Lines were way to long for snacks (so we skipped) but line was better for drinks. We bought the water in the help yourself for a donation station and that was a nice touch. I finally gave up on trying to use the bathroom before the show and ended up leaving during the first act. Your staff is spectacular! Certainly wish there was more food offerings and ways to move the lines quicker. Merch was available thankfully (although the lines was super confusing and people were cutting) and normal pricing. read more

Finally had the opportunity to check out Keller Auditorium and I gotta say that I was quite impressed with the venue. Except for a few things in which I agree upon with, with other reviewers. First impression, drove past it, and was easy to find being between Clay and Market St. You can't miss it. My friend gave me the perfect parking location, adjacent to it, and it only cost $6. It was next to the park, at the university, and had plenty of spaces. And with a parking attendant for a bit of security. I was actually surprised the lot wasn't fully packed. Main entrance through security was fine. But man, walking into the lobby... I don't know, that lobby area was just too small. The first thing that came to mind was, umm wow fire hazard! Everyone was crammed like sardines just getting to the bar, concessions, and merchandise stand. I feel if they allow folks to take their seats earlier than just 10 minutes before show starts, it would help ease the size with the crowd coming in. Service from the entrance security and venue staff was excellent. From the lady that helped us find our seats, to the coat-check lady (which is free btw), to concessions services. No issues, all helpful. Although it did cost me $32 for two beers and a water. At least you can eat and drink at your seat, as if you were at the movie theaters. There were stairs to get up to the men's restroom, which also made me wonder about folks with a wheelchair. But for the most part, the restroom did seem clean. Inside views, pretty magnificent! Larger than imagined. Maybe even too big of a venue. I've only seen broadway shows in NY and SF, so comparing this auditorium was more "modern impressive" to say the least. As for the seat view, we had seats to watch Hamilton in Section Orchestra F, off to the right of the stage. My preference is always the aisle, so I gotta say that first seat is golden! I saw nearly everything except the brief moments when performers spoke on the upper right side. I felt sorta bad for the three kids behind me, because I think they probably were struggling to see what's happening. Not very kid friendly imo. And being 5' 5", I felt the seat were comfortable enough. As for the sound, it was perfect. It wasn't overly loud. I heard everything just fine. In closing, I'd simply say, I cannot wait to watch another show here. read more

I am a fan of the arts in Portland. For a "small/big" city, Keller gets our big Broadway, Opera, Ballet, etc shows. But lets talk about the venue---the sound can sometimes be a little funky (so don't go opening night if possible) and there is an extreme lack of ladies restrooms. The exterior is dated for sure, but overall the venue is easy to get around, easy to park nearby and I will never say no to a night at the Keller! read more

I love this place for hosting a great variety of Broadway shows all of which I have thoroughly enjoyed. It's conveniently accessible thru public transport and also have parking lots right beside. I've been to see the nutcracker and the phantom of the opera. Wow I cried during both performances they were Both were fantastic. The Keller auditorium is such a nice place to host these performances. The staff are helpful and very attentive to the audience. I've seen many shows at Kellar throughout the years as an avid Broadway fan. I've sat on every floor and find the experience to be just the same, meaning that there really isn't a bad seat to be found. While other reviewers have mentioned the sound being bad, I personally don't find sound to be an issue. I took a star off for the awful lobby experience others have mentioned. And while I do appreciate the parking ramps around the venue, I find them to be terribly mismanaged as it has taken me upwards of 45 minutes to get out of them in the past. I'm not sure this actually reflects on Kellar, but it would be nice to see them get more involved in the parking situation for their events. read more

I've been to a few shows here in 2024 and I love it. Mostly. The Pros: There really isn't a bad seat in the house. There's a parking garage on the corner. Ticketing fees are reasonable. The Cons: The lobby is way too small for the amount of people the theater holds. Add in merch booths and you can hardly move around. There are not enough bathrooms so intermission lines are crazy long. Lines to get food and/or drinks are very long and it's pretty pricy. read more

Hamilton was my first time to Keller. There is a low cost parking ramp conveniently across the street, and a mob of people out front if you arrive early. The lobby is shockingly small for how many people they allow inside. My seat was great, and like others have said it seems there isn't a bad seat in the house. The sound, however.. I couldn't make out the lyrics much of the time. I don't think I got the full impact of the show because of this. I would be hesitant to see another Broadway show here. read more

Getting in was really easy. They have the new detectors that don't require you to empty your pockets. Once inside, the bathrooms are on opposite ends of each other. The women's side has a huge rest area before the bathroom if you want to relax next to the bathroom.....lol during intermission, there was a huge line but it seemed to move quickly. I have visited Keller a few times now - years ago pre-COVID and just recently in Nov 2023. I believe happy cities have numerous theaters so I'm grateful to have this one in Portland. It's a convenient downtown location, across from an awesome fountain. The theater itself isn't too fancy but it's large. At the event I went to recently, the staff did a standout job managing the crowd and directing people to their seats. Unfortunately the sound system was pretty bad. Since it was a live podcast this was a bummer but sound is essential for any theater performance. It was hard to hear the speakers at times, making this a three-star review. Parking is available on the street or in a couple nearby garages. read more

Portland deserves a better theater than the Keller. It's not bad by any means and I appreciate the ease of parking in many adjacent lots for a decent price. The theater itself, however, feels outdated and looks like a larger version of a high school theater. The sound quality is also in need of improvement. The Keller does the job and I'm sure the theater quality alone won't deter anyone from attending, but if you visit similar venues in other cities it feels like we're due for an upgrade. read more

Watched Moulin Rouge (Broadway in Portland) show with the hubby and enjoyed the experience! Parking sucks so we took a ride share and made it stress free - there is a pickup/drop off strip right in front. Theater was clean and staff was available to guide and answer questions. Just when I think I have figured this venue out... I come here a lot. I see the whole seasons of PDX Opera and Oregon Ballet Theater here since it is their venue for 3/4 of their seasons. I had an injury which has now turned into a pretty permanent situation. As a result, I sometimes have better nights walking than others. My legs might barely bend so I need an ADA seat so I am not crammed into a space. I went to Moulin Rouge, last minute seat grab since I thought I was not free and I was...and I was so glad I grabbed that ticket because that was an incredible show and an incredible seat in the box section where I did not realize was ADA and so much better to get in and out of that the orchestra section at the rear where it is very cramped plus I am genuinely afraid of falling down due to the weird twisted floor they have there. With the box section you can just go up barely and the seats are all roomy and adjustable. So, I then called to have my opera seat switched and she said that my specific seat was available. I did not realize she did select box but switched the seat and section numbers. It was fine since the whole section I was in was empty. What was ridiculous is the people who usher are horrific. The venue is actually not laid out that badly if you know what I now know. FYI...since, apparently the ushers think the four point walking cane means I like to walk unnecessarily across the whole venue though the sea of rude people. The normal public look at the cane and sigh annoyed I am 'in the way', rush in front of me, step ON my cane (no joke...it happens) so I REALLY try to avoid people and I go out a lot since I like living my life an seeing performances. Most venues I learn tricks as to where to sit and getting in and out with minimal people interaction. It keeps me liking people a lot more the less I experience their rudeness. So, I was so excited to sit in my new found perfect spot! I do like the Keller's street position and it has parking close in for people so the front is rarely crowded so I can just walk up reasonable ramping streets - there are quite a few ways and the stairs are even half steps up which I can manage pretty well if needs be. I wander over to the first elevator and just tell her box. She sees my seat and section just as we hit the box floor. She then practically yells at me as she slams the door shut fast so I could not get off. She barks that I have to get off here, practically throws my hobbling ass off saying I need to go to the other end and take that elevator...but there's a guy leading people in...and I had to wait A LONG TIME to get that elevator. I remember that the box section I was able to get to by stairs that were not a lot but she took me up to I don't even know. Long story.... I walked down because that usher pointed me to the box usher saying that the box DOES go through...and it does. So why that insane woman thought it made sense for me to walk to the other end and elevator versus just walking to the other side of the box section (WHICH HAS A COMPLETE WALKING PATH). There was one amazing usher who came to get me when she saw the look of a woman in a whole world of hurt and she offered to bring me water too. It was a tiny cone but hay... a cone of kindness was very much appreciated. And warning - I almost always end up with a migraine post show. Every performance there is always some asshole with a lit up screen (FYI - dark room and your high beam is horrible - YES, we ALL see you). I love the box section but now it's worse. I was at PDX Opera's Rulsalka which was lovely...until someone in the center floor level had their cell phone on a solid four minutes. I was amazed it was so long and then realized what I have noticed before - unlike at the Schnitzer for symphony performances, their ushers do and say nothing. They shut the doors and that's that which I probably shouldn't say since it might encourage you. Honestly it would piss me off less if it were people taking photos but it is people doing an email or IM - you can tell by the screen and that's why it is so bright! What a fun place to do a thing! I don't care what the thing is, I've enjoyed them all. The acoustics are great, I love the space itself, all the levels, and the people who work there are so kind and enthusiastic and helpful. We had no problem with parking, the park outside is lovely to spend time in beforehand, and there is a decent flow even when full of humanity inside, not to mention the bathrooms are clean and easy to access. I even love the view out of their massive windows during intermissions while we stretch our legs a little or grab a glass of wine. The seating I'm still working out, as in what and where is best to be, but so far, the 'cheap' seats are still great, and the box experience is at this point my favorite. The variety of events and the professionalism with their management each night is top notch and I cannot wait to go back every time I leave. read more

The Shane Gillis Comedy show was at the Keller Auditorium. The staff were very friendly. Good selection of beer. I was impressed. Definitely an older building but I have zero complaints about that. The only thing I think could improve was the sound system. It sounded a bit muffled where I was from and not as crisp but overall I was very happy. Having grown up in NJ and seeing a dozen Broadway shows and concerts annually, I'm grateful that Portland has a venue that attracts traveling Broadway shows, singers, comedians and the ballet. I probably visit this venue 10-12 times a year taking in the traveling Broadway shows (Wicked, The Lion King, The Producers, Mama Mia, Fiddler on the Roof, Hair, Book of Morman, School of Rock...) and it wouldn't be the Holidays without seeing The Nutcracker! I've seen Harry Connick Jr, Bonnie Raitt, Renee Fleming and several other singers, as well as comedians and illusionists. Seats are comfortable and since the theatre slopes downward, usually you can see over head of the person in front of you but for that rare occasion when that person is really tall. Stage visibility is fine anywhere you sit, but obviously certain seats offer better views and prices correlate. The performance determines where I choose to sit. For Hamilton, I wanted to be a few rows back, center orchestra, and was willing to spend top dollar; for Dear Evan Hansen, I chose the balcony. And I have sat everywhere in between! Acoustics could be better. Often I am struggling to understand the words when I am seeing a play or musical. For comedians and concerts, it's better but could still use improvement. The way the Keller is designed creates a bottleneck the minute you get through the doors. Everyone congregates in the small, narrow lobby, which is also where they have concessions, so people hang out and it's always crowded. The best recent enhancement is the ability to preorder and pay for drinks and snacks so they are ready and waiting for you at intermission. This is a far more efficient process and even benefits those that haven't preordered, because others have, reducing the lines. The bathrooms are located in the sides with women to the right; men to the left. For some reason they don't have both a men's and women's on each side, which they should. We use the restrooms at whatever venue we choose for a pre-show dinner, then get a glass of wine and go right to our seats. Parking is super easy with a garage located on either side of the Keller which is only $6 for the evening. Since we usually have HH at Morton's or Nel Centroid before the show, I'm able to score on-street parking and only have to pay until 7pm. Point being, it's super convenient to park with easy access to bridges and freeways which means getting in and out of this part of town stressfree. Even though I see room for improvement with acoustics, bathroom and lobby, I still give the Keller 4 stars because they attract the talent which allows us to have access to performances without having to leave town, a huge benefit for Portlanders. read more

Saw cats today and we sat in a different section (Aisle 1, orchestra, row D, seats 5 & 6) and it was a BIG improvement and worth the $$. We could really see and hear to our hearts content. It was wonderful to see such emotion brought to life through the choreography and singing. Tomorrow (June 26) is the last day of this "meow-rvelous" production. See it if you can! read more
