Lovely venue for a mid-tier gig. Needs a bit of updating but it's totally fine for a 1000 seat venue, with great sightlines, pretty good sound and a compact but well thought-out seating layout. Ok, so the seats are a bit tight and closer together than I'd like, but as long as you're sitting next to a linebacker you should be fine. Bathrooms are decent enough and ushers are always bend-over backward helpful. You can buy pricy drinks in the lobby. Parking is hit or miss but should be enough street parking midweek. Also - it's downtown! To be expected. read more

My very first opera at the Newmark! We easily found street parking a few blocks away. The building and design itself is gorgeous, it is the perfect size for any show - not a bad seat in the house. Because of the age of the building, the seats are not new, so the cushions aren't 100% comfortable. The seating is also close together so it can be a bit of a tight fit (both side to side and front to back). The staff was helpful in assisting us to find our seats. They also sold beverages (a bit pricey) with a very cool sitting area, offering plenty of seats and tables on the first level. read more

I have been here two times to see a comedy show. Overall, it was a good experience both times. You can purchase drinks on-site, which is nice. They have the standard paper straws, which, due to the lids on the cups, end up getting bent and stop working properly. This means I have to take the lid off to finish the rest of my drink. The seats are not the most comfortable, but you do have space as long as the person next to you is of average size. read more

This was the first time we came at this Theatre and we were here for a comedy show. The building is well kept and the bathrooms were very clean as well as there was a bath room on every floor. Here is what I will say.. the seats are so squashed in that you are likely to touch your neighbors shoulders or legs. Its beside to be on the sides seats where you can physically move your chair. Drinks are what you expect.. small and expensive but if your not expecting that then I am not sure what to say. Staff was kind and directed us to our seats. Overall fine experience but the crowded feeling made the show a little uncomfortable. read more

Here's the thing - GO TO SHOWS HERE...support the arts and the amazing people who perform here. I just want you to know what you are in for and this is from a person who averages 1-2 performances PER WEEK sometimes. I go to both theaters in here but most is at the Newmark (the larger of the two). I have so many words to say about a lot of the staff at Newmark Theater being abusive and genuinely hateful to ADA - they make every performance an unnecessary anxiety attack going in and leaving. It's very unfortunate because I know so many people who just don't go to things because of hateful people like this. I look relatively young for my age and have found I get the worse treatment from my elders who talk down to me. I cannot imagine anyone enjoying that and it has happened several times here. After dropping into see a ballet performance a few nights ago though, I have to update since it has been countless performances, one after another and one of the ushers leveled the foulness up threatening to kick my friend and I out. She hit my shoulder while I too a photo of....drumroll please THE PERFORMERS BOWING AFTER THE PERFORMANCE!!! I post these to tag the artists and I share them on the Yelp pages too as I have folks email me about happenings and such. Before performances, words are stated that you are not to take photos or video OF THE PERFORMANCE - I am not sure if this person knows what a performance is. I got to a lot of things and even ones which encourage pictures I try to be mindful of not being a jerk and having my phone really there - they can be pretty bright etc. One at another (coincidentally enough - another OBT performance) performance, the person doing the introduction actually said they encourage photos NOW and at the applause for people to post and make sure to tag since pictures, even just the venue and bows encourage others to go to the other performances. I was happy he said that because I personally get a migraine when someone brights up the area with their phone. My pedestal complaint does not end there, and please remember this is JUST the latest "encounter" since every time I attend something it is something thanks to one of the folks who work and/or volunteer here. You would think that I'd be able to get through unscathed but oh no, dear reader, they have to make themselves into the problem I never needed which is extra special. Down to my seats - I always get the same seats at the Newmark which people do not realize are there - you actually have to arrange them and I have folks who do this for me. I come here for the opera (two different companies), OBT, White Bird performances... NW Dance Project... A LOT. But the ushers find a reason to argue, will call has even argued before that my seats don't exist. Its exhausting but also the ushers like to sit in the ADA spots so they get mad when someone knows they are actually for sale seats yet do not realize they are the numbers (they are not "marked" in the venue with their seat numbers so that the seats can be removed to place wheelchairs. Also, I will note that the regular seating in here is DANGEROUS - there are ZERO aisles so you have a very long stretch of tight seats with no way to get out. During this performance a person third row middle filmed the entire second piece and I was actually laughing because I was thinking wow - these ushers were up on everyone accusing of weird garbage before the performance and all sorts of flashing their flashlights yet have zero to say and this person is NOT just taking a quick picture (I was even more thinking ARE YOU KIDDING after because that was when the angry usher ordered me to no photos or she would kick us out). Then I saw the ushers making more of a scene walking up and down trying to figure out how to get to the person ... because they couldn't. Perhaps that is why the usher assaulted me a few minutes later?? Another reason I just know my night attending is going to be rough is entering and exiting. I have two seats I get for me and my friend who is also disabled. She has a brain tumor and I have unattached tendons + tissue disorder so I can tear or fracture things for zero reasons. So I can continue to live my life and not be in further pain or get crippled more while in public, I cannot chance people "running into me" and people do and step n my cane and A LOT. I cannot do crowds. After shows, people pile up exiting. The elevators are slow and there is a crowd waiting for them blocking us from finding a seat to wait. The second the crowd is out of the venue the ushers, including the psycho intent on throwing us out. We said that we both have difficulty with the elevator crowd and just need a moment to which she barks "THE ELEVATOR IS OVER THERE". Thank you... So we struggled getting past all the people to sit so that an even more hostile security lady could chose to bark at us that we needed to go downstairs immediately before lightly engaging the over twenty other people not ADA to. read more

First time here and we're already planning to come back! I've only ever been to the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall next door, so we were excited to check out this venue! We came for Matteo Bocelli on 12/16/24 and had seats on the 2nd Balcony. As soon as we entered, we were greeted by a kind staff member who took a look at our tickets then guided us to where we needed to go. We stopped by the bar on the lobby level and I got a lemon drop ($15 before tip). I liked that they give you your drink in a plastic cup with a lid - it was easier to walk around with and hold during the show. The 2nd Balcony was on the 4th floor and they have both stairs and elevators that you can use. The view from our 2nd Balcony seats were pretty good - I like that we were able to get a clear bird's eye view of the stage and the audience below. Next time, I want to get to the venue a little earlier so I can admire the atmosphere of the space a little more; the style of the decor and the interior design is pretty impressive. This place does have a Coat Check on the lobby level next to the elevators, but I didn't get a chance to see if it was free or whether the service required payment. For parking, we found it super convenient to park in the space at 1000 Broadway - it was safe, secure, and costed only $8.00. Looking forward to seeing more shows here! read more

I love this venue, because no matter where your seats are (near the stage, or in the balconies) it feels small and intimate. The acoustics are phenomenal. There's a bar inside for adult beverages :) IMPORTANT TO KNOW for 1st time visitors: There's no signage on the exterior saying "Newmark Theater" you just need to look for the "1111" address on the building and go in the main entrance (on Broadway). Once inside, signage makes it easy to navigate. Best parking option is directly across from Arlene Schnitzer Auditorium ($8) read more

I love this place! It's such an intimate, cozy venue to watch amazing art, athletic grace, eclectic performances, dazzling creativity. I've seen a couple performances from the Oregon Ballet Theatre and WhiteBird here and I'm so grateful to them for the artistry and beauty they present and this place for giving us such a nice place to enjoy it from. I need to make this a regular part of my life and I'm greatly looking forward to the next season, the end of Covid, and a return to Portland and all the goodness it can provide. And I have to say this. I parked at the SmartPark on 12th and Yamhill, enjoyed a nice walk over to the theater both before and after the performance. At the end of the night I returned to the parking garage and discovered that my car was still there, it was NOT stolen, the windows were NOT bashed in, the catalytic converter was NOT cut out. Everything with my car that I parked in the garage for three hours was FINE. So I enjoyed a delightful evening in Portland. Thank you folks from Oregon Ballet Theatre and Newmark Theater for giving so many of us (the show was sold out folks) such a delightful, inspiring, mesmerizing evening in Portland. :) read more

They always have such great performances here at the theater and I haven't been here in years and I think it's been since the 90s? I'm not sure how long does theaters been around but I think it's been around a long time. All I know is I saw Phil Rosenthal here and I got a signed book of his which I already bought a book the day prior at Paul's unfortunately so I have a double by... But I got to get a picture with him afterwards since I bought the signed copy at the venue and I also got to meet is beautiful daughter afterwards! read more

I had booked tickets to see Louis C.K. on Friday, 7/11 and ended up in the hospital due to a bad reaction to a medication that had me broken out in hives and difficulty breathing. Called the box office--no response. Tried to see if anyone else I knew in the area could go to the show but it was too short notice. Reached out to their customer care on Monday and they basically said "If you didn't buy Fanshield insurance, you're screwed." I reached out to Fanshield because I usually buy whatever insurance is available on events, and they let me know that because the tickets I purchased were presale, Fanshield sometimes doesn't come up as an option at checkout because presale is a different pricing type that doesn't always have the same check out options. P5 CSR rep (Chelsea) basically said Fanshield was lying and said they couldn't do anything. Not even a certificate for other events. No empathy or care--happily walked away with $160 from me that was basically a donation. read more

One waved us through then goes I guess I could have looked at your ticket and told you where your seats are. I said don't bother yourself we've got it. Been here for a performance of the Portland Choir and Orchestra (they Dona wonderful Christmas performance that is so worth seeing) for the past two winters. It is a very nice theater overall. The performance sounded good but there seems to be a vacuum pulling the full sound off the stage. A place like this should have a very full sound for it's design. The seating is pretty decent could use some new padding on the cushions to improve the comfort. They have a nice bar on the first floor, needs more space to mingle as it is a bit tight. We enjoyed our evenings here both times and will keep coming back to see performances here. read more

We've been to a few things here. Recently we attended a Nat Geo Live lecture and previously we've been to White Bird performances. For National Geographic we purchased 'Limited View' seats. It truly is limited. We could barely see 50% of the large screen they had set up for the event. One of the ushers saw us struggling to see and when I went down to ask her if it would be possible we sit in seats that hadn't been claimed, she quickly instructed me to go to the box office where they would switch our seats for us. I was very impressed with this. Regardless of if this is a typical occurrence or not, I would not recommend Limited View seating. It's worth the extra money to be able to enjoy the event. I was a bit annoyed that I called both TicketsWest and the Portland5 box office inquiring about student tickets and was told there were not be any sold for this event. Then at the box office I saw a sign indicating student ticket pricing. The box office attendant told me it was a last minute decision to sell them, but I still think they should probably tell people calling that information, instead of a firm no. Anyways, friendly staff. Quality performances. read more

I love this space. It's so beautiful, and feels very initiate. There's plenty of seating, but even from the orchestra rows toward the back, you're not too far from the stage. The beautiful blues that decorate the room make it feel so...some era that isn't now. 69's or 70's, maybe? We more recently a modern opera here, the performers were singing without microphones, and their voices carried nicely. We've also seen a standup performance here, and the acoustics with microphones works very well, too. Before the show started, I got a glass of wine from the bar downstairs. It's, of course, way more expensive than it should be, but the pours are extremely generous. read more

I took my nieces on a date last week to the children's production of Pinkalicious. We walked in and there was so much pink everywhere, and even all of the volunteers and those working in various places had pink on. It was like walking into a fairy land. Before the show, there were hidden cupcakes all on each level for little girls and boys to find and it felt super magical. Our seats were near the top, and though a little pricey, we were still able to see the entire stage and feel very intimate. All of the volunteers that work there who were wearing badges that say volunteers were extremely helpful and nice. I was impressed with the smoothness of the line after the show to get autographs from cast members, and it seems like everyone who worked here was willing to go out of their way to make all of the children feel very special. I am so glad we came and I will definitely take them back! read more

Exciting!! Going to the ballet here for the first time and the theatre promises to be a wonderful experience, with its aura of blue velvet and old cherry (mahogany?) wooden panels. The orchestra and first balcony levels even have old, real wooden chairs! How cool and comfortable they look from my nosebleed section. Yet the view to the stage is breathtaking, acoustics are good and it is a different way of seeing a ballet being danced, from so up high, the bird's eye view. I can tell the dancers are projecting straight forward, but I can read the emotions better on their faces actually. It is a lovely experience, again, and I am so grateful to be in this city where people appreciate the arts. read more

Last year we went to the Newmark theater to see the Portland Jazz Orchestra perform Duke Ellington's jazz adaptation of the Nutcracker Suite. It was a terrific show, and the theater is really a lovely venue with really good acoustics. But the actual theater is really only part of the story because the ArtBar, adjacent to the Newmark is itself a Portland music venue. The Artbar is really the foryer of the Newmark, so It's quite a large space including a fireplace and plenty of room for a stage. During the Portland Jazz Festival many jazz combos, local and otherwise, set up and played in the bar, and many of the ArtBar shows are free. It's a really casual and intimate spot for listening to small jazz combos. read more

I was just about to cry in frustration when Rebecca Owen came up to us (she's one of the supervisors in there) and helped us out. In the end, we ended up having such a great time and thanks to her and her kindness (which was so unexpected and very much appreciated) we were able to watch the show. I really am grateful for people like her, that went above and beyond her work duties and makes the experience of the place so much better. read more

We went here this past weekend to watch Beauty and the Beast. We were in the second to last row but it didn't feel like it. The stairs are very steep to get to the seats which helped it feel like we were close to the stage still. Drink prices were expensive which was somewhat expected. $9 - 13 for a glass of wine. Some of the staff members weren't very friendly. We didn't grab lids for our wine glasses because the bartender didn't tell us we needed them so one of the staff members got short with us when we tried to enter the theater without a lid. They should keep lids by the theater doors because it seemed we weren't the only ones who made that mistake. Also, during intercession one of the bartenders told me he was closed even though it was still intercession so I had to go down 4 flights of stairs to buy a drink. read more

The Newmark Theatre, part of PCPA's army of venues, is a pretty decent place to see a show (like, for example, an announced-at-the-last-minute Dave Chappelle set). It's pretty intimate, it's in decent shape (save for the older seats), the sound holds up, and it sits in a fairly upscale theater building. Not really the place I'd expect to see a self-styled 'filthy nightclub comic' talk about time travel and self stimulation while smoking at least a half-a-pack of cigarettes on stage, but hey. The process for getting in and out of this theater is interesting. You show your tickets actually at the door to the space itself, so it's not as easy as just getting in to the building and then having free reign. You have to show your ticket each time you come in and out. The upside, of course, is that you can leave and reenter, which is something you can't do at most venues around town. The bar sitch here is decent - drinks are not so hard to come by, and the prices are what you'd expect from a venue. The volunteers here are on the older side, and looked somewhat perplexed to be seating this type of crowd while a DJ bumped out some crazy loud rap. I have the feeling they're more used to performing arts, not so much a hip-hop scene. Regardless, they did it with a smile on. I'd definitely come back here for a show. Especially if Dave comes back for another epic 2 hour and 40 minute set! read more

Outrageous ticket "fees"! I tried to buy tickets for a show at the Newmark and was appalled to see a 38% "convenience fee" for $27 tickets. That's crazy enough, but I thought I could avoid such highway robbery by going to the box office. Nope, exact same fee is added to the ticket price there. This extra fee is unavoidable, no matter how the tickets are purchased. Ridiculous. There are other, better venues in town. read more

I love the Newmark Theatre as a live concert and comedy venue. Actually I appreciate the entire New Theatre Building..now called the Hatfield Hall or something like that. The foyer or rotunda of the building is classy with lovely art glass that looks like a flock of birds circling the top of it. The colors change with light from lime green to teal to purple and silver. Sitting beside the door is a statue of what looks like The Green Man, but he has a spigot for an arm and legs like an octopus He's also a chair that kids obviously are welcome to climb on. Located in the rotunda are a bar and restaurant. I know they serve great french fries as that was all I had time for tonight, prior to the show. That and a nicely poured drink. I think this bar/restaurant has odd hours..it may only be open when something is going on at the Schnitz or the Newmark. The theatre itself has wonderful acoustics for classical piano, which I what I went for today. Tickets for this event were $30 to $60, but I have seen comedy here for $20. It's not really a small theatre, I imagine it seats close to 1000 people but it feels intimate. Beautifully decorated in cherry wood and light and dark blue, there are what appears to be brass stars on the ceiling. For the size town that Portland is, I know this theatre is busy much of the year with dance, music, concerts and comedy too...it's pretty versatile and we are lucky to have ti to enjoy. Do yourself a favor and take in an event at the Newmark one of these days. Have dinner at a nice spot downtown and celebrate the arts! read more

Everyone gets a seat, the artist is intimate and near. Even the balcony is good seating here. I sat about 10 rows back. I would love to see another show here. It's hard to find though. What a lovely theatre! I was very impressed at the outside and inside design. The winding stair case was so much fun. The lighting was amazing! From the moment we walked into the building I was in total awe. The ceiling is super super high! Amazing seating inlets with people looking over the balconies. Large art piece on the left that is a huge seat. There is a small restaurant. Grab a bite to eat and a fancy drink before the show. The Oregon Children's theatre has a small booth. I think they may do some shows here as well. You can view art on the walls. They have some small trinkets for sale. It is fun to sort of dink around here before your performance. Have a seat by the fireplace and just unwind for a bit :) The theatre seating is great! The volunteers here are very helpful and friendly. They pass out the brochures and help you find your seat. I don't think there is really a bad seat in the house! We were in the upper balcony and I thought we still had a decent view looking down. The acoustics here are amazing. We were there to see the ballet Beautiful Decay. We loved the performance. It was very touching and the music was just phenomenal. This was my first ballet besides the nutcracker and I thought it was great! The seats were affordable. I highly recommend seeing a show here. read more

I went here for Jared Diamond's talk and discussion for the release of his new paperback edition. Thanks Powell's Books for putting this on. I will try to keep this as a review on the venue, but realize that watching a single person give a presentation is quite different from a play, musical, or anything like that. The place was pretty full, but I had no issue either seeing or hearing all the action from the stage. Getting in and out was also quick and painless, and we found some nearby street parking which was free since it was later on in the evening. I look forward to returning to see more shows here. read more

The husband and I were at the Newmark last night to see David Cross. I have walked by the 1111 SW Broadway building a hundred times, but all I have ever noticed was the marquee and the Art Bar! Anyhow, upon arrival we were met with a very long line to get a drink. The line, having about 20 people in it with two bartenders, took about 30 minutes to get through, literally making us the last people to take our seats. I'm not sure what the problem was, but the bartenders were really really really slow. Maybe since the beers on tap cost $6 they were trying to give us our money's worth - I really do not know. The theater itself is stunning, and every seat has a wonderful view. We had two large loud men in front of us, but because of the staggered seating and the general roominess of the place we weren't bothered by them at all. As for Cross, he was hilariously offensive as usual, and put on a great show. He did start about 8 minutes earlier than advertised - so I would recommend getting there EARLY. Being fashionably late - or even on time! - could leave you out in the cold. read more

I've been here over the years for a variety of performances, from dance, to lectures, to interviews with authors. The Newmark is a great, intimate, very Portland theater. The sound and the view is good pretty much anywhere you sit. There's a terrific lobby with a bar and a place to get a quick bite before the show if you like. The Newmark is part of Portland Center for the Performing Arts (PCPA)'s venue roster, and it never disappoints. read more

See Oregon Ballet Theater's "Celebrate" before it's over (April 26, 2014)! Each piece that comprises this performance is beautifully choreographed and all the dancers are stunning: graceful, athletic and passionate. I usually prefer classical ballet, but I was pleasantly surprised by the contemporary ballet style that is "Celebrate". (I don't know if it's really considered "contemporary".) What an evening to remember during my five-day visit to Portland! Thank you, OBT. As for the Newmark Theatre itself: I was happy with my orchestra seat, row N, in the center. As a visitor, I wasn't quite sure when I purchased my ticket if it would be too far, but the venue is not large, so it was perfect. Too bad the gentleman sitting in front of me had hair that was slightly spiky. Sometimes, I couldn't see the dancers' feet on stage when his head obstructed my view. I just sat upright a bit more and problem solved. (A little booster seat might have helped me, too.) read more

Went for John Oliver. Great show! I thought it would be a nicer venue though. Didn't seem very clean with hand prints all over the inside of the elevator and a little dusty or musty inside. For some reason, they scanned our tickets and told us which floor but then had to send us to another floor. This happened to another couple as well. Kind of odd. Also...too many people kept getting up and going to the bathroom during the show which is not the fault of the venue. Although they did a last call for seating (I noticed because I just made it in then) and yet they still allowed a few different groups of people in probably about 20 minutes after that (once the show started). All these really late arrivers just happened to be on my row as well. John Oliver himself commented about how bad the lighting person was who couldn't follow him! It was super hot in there as well. But the show was hilarious! read more

It's such a beautiful theater! The staff and volunteers are nice. I didn't get to try a drink at the bar, because the line was kinda long and I arrived a little later than I wanted to. There was plenty of sitting area to enjoy your drinks though, so it didn't feel too busy. One thing to watch out for is you have a seat in the second balcony in the first row, it's a little hard to see over the railing on the stage. I imagine it would be easier if you're taller though. read more

I like this theater. It's a small theater but any seat makes it a good seat. I came to watch the final showing of Legally Blonde: the Musical and it was great! My bf and I had so much fun! We got drinks which were reasonably priced. They give it to you in a cup with a lid so that you don't spill your drink! I never drank beer out of a straw before but I liked it! I came here to see Khaled Housseini speak. I loved the theater. It was perfect and comfortable.

This is a beautiful and comfortable venue. The facility offers complimentary tours on Saturdays from 11 to 1. Tracy is a center volunteer and gave a warm, thoughtful tour of four theaters in the complex. Ask for Tracy and you'll get a wonderful tour from an old friend. read more
