It's tough to come up with a 40th birthday gift for an estranged spouse. These days, the only thing we have in common is our children, so it seemed fitting to include them somehow. In a rare moment of clarity, I found a way to get this done, give business to a worthy photographer ( ahem, and friend) at the same time. I posed the idea to Tom, to do a photo shoot of my kids as a present for my wife and his energy and enthusiasm made me immediately think I made the right choice. We discussed locations and concepts based on what I had seen of his work. Tom had some fantastic ideas and was very receptive to my own ideas. Tom feels that the comfort of the subjects is important, so we decided to do an outdoor shoot at the park in the neighborhood where they grew up. The day came and although Tom had nothing to do with the weather, I couldn't help but feel that with the most beautiful fall day I'd ever seen, Tom has an in with Mother Nature. The shoot went flawlessly. He worked great with usually difficult kids and I could tell they felt at ease. My kids are into cosplay, where they like to dress up as their favorite characters. They loved that Tom incorporated their costumes into the shoot and couldn't wait for the pictures. And what pictures they were. I've never seen my kids look so good. The shots were classy, true and fun. I am more than pleased with the results and they were a big hit with everyone who got one. Tom uses an easy method for getting you your pics. He sets up a web page where you can view all shots and order them however you wish ( mugs, cards, photos, digital, etc) . With one click, a picture will be in your hands within hours. The overall experience with Tom, was one that I can't say enough good things about. Unfortunately, when she discovered that I was black, she no longer wanted to move forward with me and instead scheduled an open house for the upcoming weekend to find new applicants. I met every qualification except the color of my skin. Unfortunately, I cannot change that. What Lana doesn't know is that I am a good person, a mother of a 5 year old, and a veteran elementary school teacher. She doesn't know that my current landlord would love for me to continue with him, but is willing to give a strong recommendation to my new landlord. She doesn't know that I am a former homeowner but recently divorced and need to rent temporarily. So what does Lana know? Lana knows that my NTN report is 95%, my credit score is excellent, I make over 2.5 times the amount of her listing, I have a clean background check, and I have $0 debt. Lana now knows that I am black. And since she made that discovery, she refuses to rent out her listing to someone who looks like me regardless of my qualifications. Racism is deeply rooted in our country so much so that even people who immigrate here have quickly learned who is at the bottom and treat them accordingly. My hope is that justice will be served.
