It's hard to put into words how special Ancient Echoes at Kelly Place really is. It's not just a place to stay near Mesa Verde and Cortez, CO--it's a destination in itself. We initially came to the area to visit Sutcliffe Vineyards and to explore Canyons of the Ancients, but Kelly Place became the highlight of our trip. Guests can easily access trails to ancient cliff dwellings and a restored kiva, all within the boundaries of the property, which overlaps with Canyons of the Ancients! It was awesome in the true meaning of the word. Few are fortunate enough to have this kind of access to respectfully admire and inspect the remains of an ancient civilization in such a private setting. With Sutcliffe Vineyards only 10 minutes away, and sites of the Canyons of the Ancients on the property, we could not have found a better place to stay. Our suite in the newly renovated main lodge was outstanding. The large room had a comfortable queen bed with quality linen and a fluffy comforter that I loved. The bathroom had a beautifully tiled walk-in shower that was very nice. Magnificent views from our room's windows offered more vistas of the surrounding beauty. The facilities at Ancient Echoes at Kelly Place are fantastic- modern comfort amid ancient history. We stayed in a suite in the main lodge, which was thoughtfully and tastefully restored by owners Celine and Allison. The main area of the lodge offers a kiva-style fireplace, shared meeting space, library and gourmet kitchen all available to guests. The private casitas and suites are perfect for family reunions or a peaceful getaway. We're already planning a return trip! This was a highlight of our trip. We'd been to Mesa Verde but we didn't realize that where we were staying had its own Indian Ruins. We loved the way they had restored one of them and decorated it as it probably was originally. The room was very comfortable and it was lovely just lounging around the beautiful courtyard. The lady who does the baking here really knows how to cook. Some of her cookies were so delicious and breakfast is the same quality. We loved staying here and hope to come again someday. read more

Kelly Place is a treasure. Not only is this a phenomenal bed and breakfast (with hearty, delicious and freshly prepared breakfasts), Kelly Place is an archeological preserve with Ancient Puebloan sites, including a reconstructed kiva. The main building is a beautiful adobe style building with a courtyard surrounded by the beautiful rocks and foliage of McElmo canyon. There are cabins and suits situated around the property, as well as camping sites. The owners, Gerene and Mark are perfect hosts, welcoming and full of information (and great breakfasts) yet they make sure their guests have privacy and alone time. Not only is this a great place to call home for day trips in the area, Kelly Place is it's own destination, with hiking trails and ancient ruins on the property. I love it here!! read more

Me and my wife celebrated our recent wedding anniversary there and loved it. I had stayed here once before about ten yrs ago and it was just as charming and enchanting as it was back then. It is somewhat rustic but clean. The Kiva and ruins located on the property are really cool. The host's were great and the breakfast was awesome- thanks, Mark! If your looking for somewhere comfortable to rest your head and immerse yourself in the history and culture of the area you can't go wrong here. I suggest you make time to also visit Rodney and Christy Carricker next door at the ranch and take a horse back ride through the local canyons to take in the history and see some awesome ancient ruins. Petroglyphs and artifacts are everywhere. read more

I've been wanting to stay here for years and finally had the opportunity. No one in the office when we showed. Waited and finally the nonplussed owner showed to confirm our reservation. We were put in a room right next to the office and right next to the kitchen. The bed was as hard as a rock, the pillows were lumpy and the room was super hot with no ac and didn't cool down all night. Wide awake at 7am with the clattering of dishes. You better be an early riser here if you want to get breakfast, which is only served till 8:30! When asked if we could move to a different room we were given an even worse room. The natural surrounding beauty is the only thing this place has going for it. Take my advice, stay in Cortez and visit the amazing archaeological sites of the area during the day, but avoid this hoax of a bed and breakfast called Kelly Place. read more

I stayed recently with my family at the Kelly Place. As a post grad in Environmental Science, I casually inquired a day after arriving, if recycling was available. The women owner said" put your aluminum and glass in trash, as it is sorted at the Cortez landfill." Right ! Upon observing the staff, all paper products, cardboard, food waste, glass, unrinsed plastic food containers, and everything else were summarily tossed in the trash, and then transferred to a Waste Management dumpster. There is no way this waste stream was processed at the landfill, and a call to Waste Management in Cortez confirmed this. Cortez is not Marin County ! On an outside door at Kelly Place, the following Navajo saying is posted; "In beauty I walk with beauty before me I walk with beauty behind me I walk with beauty above and about me I walk." -Navajo Saying Kelley Place is despoiling the beauty below them, by sending all their reusable waste to the landfill. And for an area with tremendous solar gain, none of that technology is utilized. And it is very disingenuous of the owner to fob their clientele off, by misdirection that recycling takes place at the local landfill ! The ancient Indian cultural that resided at the area now known as Kelly place, and the adjacent environs of the Canyon of the Ancients, deserve better. read more

I will never go back nor recommend this place. Wi-Fi is not in every room. There was a computer at the front desk where took could search the internet. Large creatures waiting for an opportunity to enter your room. Rooms are very outdated. Large red ants are waiting for a moment to pick you up and carry you away. Don't even think about opening a window, the large wasps outside your window can't wait to join you. read more

Arachnopocalypse! On Thursday, July 14, we checked into the Kelly Place B&B. We upgraded our room to the deluxe cabin and settled in for the night. We were getting into bed when we noticed many small spiders on the counter in the kitchen. On closer examination, we discovered they were traveling on webs that stretched across the counter, sink, and to the chair backs. There had been a few there earlier and Jen (my co-traveler) had wiped them off the counter into the sink. The new ones had created new webs across the corner of the counter as well once we looked more closely. There were hundreds of tiny spiders on these webs. We also found several on the queen sized bed. By this time our daughters were becoming afraid and upset. I put a headlamp on and looked under the counter and found a large black widow (about 3/4 inch body size) in a nest with several egg sacks. The smaller spiders were coming out from one of the egg sacks. At this time we went into the main lodge and called the number for the owners. Jerene answered and we told her the issue, and asked if she had bug spray, or any idea how to help us. She came down and seemed annoyed to be bothered. She went into our cabin and I showed her the nest. She sprayed most of a can of insecticide under the counter. I asked her if she needed the headlamp to see into the dark and she didn't answer. I shined it under there and didn't see the large mother spider on the nest or on the floor. I asked something about where it went and she didn't respond. She then went outside and told the crying girls that the spider "is more afraid of them than they are of it". I told her we couldn't sleep there after the spider infestation and insecticide had been sprayed all over, and asked what she could do for us. She said, "Nothing". I asked twice if she would refund our money or had another room. She said she wouldn't do that. I asked again to clarify and she said no, and left without any other interaction. We drove into Cortez at 10:30 at night and paid $160 for a spider-free room there. There was absolutely no apology or acknowledgement that a poisonous spider infestation was an issue or any attempt to make this right. Instead we were treated as if we were inconveniencing the employee and being hysterical. We realize spiders (including black widows) are a part of living in the rural west. However, a large poisonous spider's nest and hundreds of baby spiders crawling over the furniture in the same room with us is unacceptable regardless. And after a can of insecticide is sprayed in an enclosed space, it also isn't safe to remain and sleep in that in that room. No attempt was made to find us another place to sleep, even in our original, non-upgraded room. No empathy or understanding for two frightened children (8 and 9 years old) or for the fact that we had to drive 20 miles and try to find another hotel room at 11 pm in a town with which we were unfamiliar. The property is lovely, the lodge is beautiful and unique. This situation could have been salvaged for us with good customer service and a modicum of kindness. read more

Camping with dog. Location is beautiful and breakfasts tasty. We got crosswise with the owner when our 12 lb deaf, arthritic dog got on the lawn. I was yelled at by an employee to get him off which I immediately did. There were 2 dogs in our party neither of which barked. At breakfast, my husband inquired about check out time. The owner proceeded to cuss him out in front of guests and told us to get off the property. We were trying to get off the property but both of us needed a quick shower. There is only 1 bathroom and shower for the campground. A very inconsiderate camper utilized the facility for 45 minutes. Meanwhile the rest of us who needed to use the facility had to wait. Agree with post that states beautiful place with horrible management. Dogs should not be allowed. read more

I attended a wedding in June at Kelly Place. To start the bride and groom were not allowed an early check in, although their wedding was a few hours away. The owners were very rude to all the guests, asking them to be quiet at a wedding celebration which was not allowed to go past 11:30 pm. They kicked guests out although they had paid for a camping site. They threatened to shoot one of the guest's dogs. Their website indicated that dogs were allowed. VERY RUDE!! Oh man we really loved this place. After 2 weeks on the road camping we splurged on this place and it was totally worth it. The owners were very nice. The room has its own bathroom (shower/toilet/sink , no tub in our room, not sure about others) and breakfast is included. The linens and towels were soft. The breakfast was delicious! It included eggs, bacon, fruit, yogurt, homemade granola, a variety of breads and spreads/jams, these cream cheese puff things that were so yum, orange & apple juices, milk, cereal, coffee, all served buffet style. We enjoyed taking to other travelers while sitting at the one long shared breakfast table. It's not only a B&B but also an ancient architectural site with Puebloan homes and kivas that have been restored or are in process of restoration. Wonderful place. We stayed one night for $125 (our room had a full bed and bunk beds - 4 people total could sleep in the room). We want to visit again! read more
