Good experience at the White Eagle while spending the night from Pennsylvania and exploring Mesa Verde. Held our breath while opening the door to the room, but room 17 was clean and well equipped with 3 double beds for our family of 5. Cable TV worked well, internet took a few minutes to connect but worked fine, and showers were hot. Other patrons were quiet and caused no disturbances. Only issue was the tub drain that did not drain, but after borrowing a plunger and attempting to gain flow, the manager gave me the room key to the room next door so we could continue our shower process. Problem solved! It is family- run establishment, which I like to support- and although dated, it was clean, convenient, and at $147, more affordable than other options in Cortez. **Family-Owned, Clean Pet-Friendly Motel That Checks All the Boxes** The White Eagle Inn was a very nice stop to recharge on our way to New Mexico. Being a family-owned hotel with just three owners in 60 years, it was satisfying to support a local business run by two charismatic and enthusiastic owners that deeply care about their property rather than another hotel chain run by the "Big Six" (IHG, Choice, Wyndham, Hyatt, Marriott, Hilton). We arrived late at night, but the owners were so kind to arrange a late check-in process. Check-in time is from 3-9 so they were generous to accommodate us. The late check in was convenient and socially distant. The owner Kellie even sent ice to our freezer! Nice touch. -Location: The hotel is located right off the highway through Cortez, though a little removed from the city center. -The Hotel: White Eagle has a homey, down-to-earth yet earnest feel. It is a lovely throwback! There are 16 rooms and a nice picnic area with grill. There are 2 areas for the furbabies. Pet friendly but you absolutely need to declare your animals. Rooms are a single level motel format with quaint front desk area. -The Room: We had the triple room 17 which was very comfortable with three double beds. It is located at the end of the motel and has two chairs and a table in front. The room was clean and had retro wood paneling and traditional lamp shades. The bathroom was properly sealed and very clean. There is a table and chairs for eating as well as desk with chair. The beds are a bit springy but nice. It was so nice to have three beds for three travelers. Light fixture above window may need some dusting (mostly negligible but just wanted to point it out). Room blackouts out with ease for easy sleep. The bathroom had tile floors and the shower was very quiet. The water pressure is lower, but this is the desert! Perfectly understandable. However, the hot and cold faucet knobs took more adjusting to get the right temperature (bounced between very hot and very cold fast). They did not skimp, with tons of towels, washcloths, toilet paper, and shampoos/soap (came in individual packages) in the room which was so welcome! A/C ran consistently and the room stayed cool in the Colorado heat. Two important notes are that check out is at 10 AM and that there is no breakfast (though there is tea and coffee). Better get your early bird game on and get the worms! Check out is seamless, just put the key in a drop-off at the lobby door. The owner Mark personally sent us goodbye and gave us some great recommendations for the area. Cute little retro motel. This place is family owned and very clean. The family that owns it is very friendly and helpful. In general, Cortez is a very friendly little town. We were here on Christmas day and all restaurants were closed. The only open place was closing as we were about to enter and they let us in anyway so we wouldn't have to go hungry on Chritmas night. We were not rushed or anything and could take our time to eat. In the morning, we went to a small gas station to buy an ice scraper and a really nice girl that was just leaving the store and must have overheard my husband asking the clerk where to find one, just gave me hers to keep!!! The owners are warm, welcoming people and welcomed our large dog as well. They gave us several tips about local dining and places to visit. They also helped us out with a jump when our car wouldn't start! The rooms were clean and the bed was super comfortable. Retro heaven! Great, great place to stay. The office closes at 9:00 pm so make sure to call ahead to get your reservation. I pulled in to see if they had an available room after a 15 hour drive only because I was tired and wanted a place to stay. What a gem to find. The management is great! The room was great. And the throwback retro was too much fun. To top it off, I got a good night's sleep in a comfortable bed and a warm shower in the morning that left me energized for the next day. I stayed here in November 2019 during a road trip after my previous lodging fell through, and I am really glad I did! This was a cozy inn with a welcoming hostess (and cute dog), which seems harder to find these days. The rates were extremely reasonable, the room was very well kept, and check-in and checkout were simple and quick. I was even given a map of the area with breakfast recommendations. Very very decent motel. Don't be put off by the plain exterior. The outside is very unglitzy but the interior was very clean and comfy. I checked out the very reliable tripadvisor.com and decided on the White Eagle. The inn is located about two miles from town but the payoff is that it is quiet and away from the hustle and bustle. We had a room with a king bed which had a shelf headboard instead of night stands, The mattress was firm and the bedding was ultra clean and fresh. The bathroom was sparkling clean. We also had a mini-fridge and coffee maker. Plus wi-fi that worked Also working A/C. The owners are genuinely warm and friendly. The tv is old style CRT and hung from the wall on my side of the bed. No problem for even my stumpy, zoftig body. I was able to nimbly get by. The price is so reasonable (around $65-ish) which is up to 1/2 the other motels in town. Cortez is about 20 ? miles from Mesa Verde Park's entrance. We would definitely stay here again. read more

1964 can be fun if you don't stay too long. The White Eagle Inn in Cortez, Colorado is a "refurbished" sixties-style hotel. Staying there is a lot like driving around in a cherry 1968 Camaro convertible in many ways. First off, you'd absolutely love to go cruising in that car with the top down and the engine roaring. Drive it for a few days, though, and you'd start to notice the lack of air conditioning, power steering, satellite radio and the 12 mpg. We thoroughly enjoyed our night there. The staff was very pleasant and the view of the mountains behind the motel is fabulous. They're designer colors: evergreen with a horizontal ecru stripe near the top. The room had everything we needed except an iron and board, but the staff brought one over the minute we asked. Even after one day, though, you notice that the bathroom is lit by a single bulb in a sixties-era glass fixture over the mirror. The air conditioning unit is effective but loud. The TV is an analog job, enormous by today's standards, and it sticks out from the wall at least three feet. I was scared to death I'd get up in the night and crash my head into it. In other words, there are good reasons today's hotel rooms are very different from those in 1960. Still, if you're in Cortez, you're likely there to visit Mesa Verde. The alternatives in a small town like this are chains like Holiday Inn Express. If you're only staying a night or two, it can be fun to spend them in 1964. read more

Immaculately clean, even the grout on the tiled bath area sparkled. We were travelling with a baby so cleanliness was very important to us and we were not disappointed. Bathroom floor was heated, our room had a fridge and the modern heating and cooling unit worked great. Decor is dated, but extremely well maintained, everything has a fresh coat of paint. We stayed here one night when we were in Cortez on our way to Mesa Verde National Park. We chose the White Eagle Inn on the strength of others' Yelp reviews and my followup telephone conversation with the owner. Very nice guy. They went out of their way to accommodate us when we told them we might arrive later in the evening. (We didn't, as it turned out, but I was impressed and moved by the proprietor's friendliness.) Disclosure: as others have pointed out, the place isn't fancy. The rooms are small, and they're straight out of 1961. Who cares?? We didn't. Our room was scrupulously clean and the bed was comfortable. We slept with the window open a couple of inches, which obviated the need for the a/c. Four pillows, and nice ones--yes! Thank you! The bathroom has a tub and a great shower, and they've included rags for wiping your shoes and cloths for removing your makeup. Smart move for them and a nice accommodation for the guests. Comfortable. Clean. Quiet. Friendly. Under $60. These are the kind of folks I want to give my business to, and we will do so next time we're in Cortez. read more

Stayed a night in Cortez on a business trip. Anguished over where to stay, mostly because I am of a Marriott mold that needs to be broken when I come to these far-out places in the country; I expect new and sleek and breakfast and a pool. But when I come out here, I find my preferences change. I like simplicity, serenity and beauty and proximity to the rich exploration opportunities out here. The White Eagle Inn is just the place for all of that. I have no doubt I stayed at the right place overnight. Love the cleanliness, kindness of the owners, the half-century old theme of the room. I appreciate the fridge in the room, good internet connection and close availability of the fridge. The owner purposely gave me a room close to the main office so I could be assured of the good internet connection. Lastly, the price is unreal: less than 70$ for an experience like this!? I do a half-marathon in Shiprock every year at this time, but when I tried to book the "official" motel in Farmington as usual, it was full. I searched on the web and found the White Eagle inn, a few miles farther from Shiprock but at a bit over half the rate of the Farmington fancy hotel, I took this one and booked it for two nights. I am extremely happy i did, and had I known about this place I would have been doing it the last five years. The proprietors/staff were helpful and friendly. The room was much more than adequate, and I always like being able to park outside the front door (parking spots are reserved by room number.) Although on the outskirts of town in a somewhat industrial setting, the nights were quiet and the view to the back was of Mesa Verde. They've also turned a small open space into something of a recreation area, including a one-hole miniature golf course. The pool was empty. Features: -The wifi worked well. -The power strip by desk was ugly but functional and handy. -The fridge was unplugged when I got there but cooled off quickly -There is a full-sized coffee maker; if you bring your own filter and coffee you can make a full pot. -It's on the outskirts of town, no noise at night. (The was actually a plus for me as it's on the Shiprock side of town.) -Standard def tv worked. The only criticism I might have is the lack of room between the bed and the desk. I kept stumbling on the bedspread when I passed between them. Not a big deal, but something one might want to consider if dealing with a rambunctious family. DON'T JUST DRIVE BY THIS PLACE if you're looking for a place to stay in Cortez!! From the outside it may look like one of the older single-story motels - YET very clean and modern. It's located just outside of town yet dining and shops are within a quick driving distance. If you are looking for something fancy, this is not the place for you. HOWEVER, if you are looking for a clean, comfortable, and quite room, this is definitely the place. The room (we stayed in a king room) had a microwave, coffee pot, hair dryer, and a refrigerator with a small freezer section (imagine that; larger chains don't). The owners and staff are very friendly and helpful and glad to answer any questions you may have. This is our second time staying here because we remembered how nice it was and had to stop in Cortez for the night. We'd stay here again in a heart beat. read more

Just like home... almost. When on the road, there's nothing better than to shower in a clean bathroom, then drop into a clean, comfortable bed. I don't need a lot of amenities, but I'm picky about cleanliness. I had a room at the Brown Palace a few years ago that didn't come close to the obvious attention to detail at the White Eagle. I liked this place a year ago when I stayed three nights. I think it was even better this time. No, it's not new and no, it's not downtown. This is a motel in the old-fashioned meaning of the word. Nothing fancy and no waffle-laden breakfast, either. But the family running this place are friendly, courteous and very helpful with all the places to visit in the area. The rooms are spacious (at least, ours was!) clean and very well kept up and maintained. Our bed was comfortable and the bathroom and shower were very well maintained. A very reasonable price means that this was a nice value for staying in the Cortez area. As a caveat, we use the room as a place to come back to, not as a place to spend our time, so if you are interested in entertaining guests you might want to look for a larger place or a more 'commercial' venture, but for us? We will come back again, and I recommend you do likewise! read more

I was fooled by such good reviews and star rating. This was not what I expected. Small town motel, which is fine but the room was 90 degrees and the AC could not quite get it cooled. The putt-putt course had not been taken care of and was kind of a gimmick. Wi-fi was not strong enough to reach my room. So, I rate this one as underwhelming. Perhaps if my expectations were not driven so high be reviews it would not have been as dissapointing. read more

Not very often that I get a basic, large, thoughtfully laid-out, super clean, comfortable motel room at an incredibly reasonable price. I found that here at the White Eagle Inn. What's good about it: 1) Large room for the price, with a larger-than-average bathroom 2) Thoughtfully laid out, with plenty of counter space in bathroom, power strip attached to desk for all your rechargers and hair dryer 3) Super, super clean. No dust, no dirt, no bugs. 4) In-room mini fridge and coffee maker (no microwave) 5) Quiet, single floor motel. You can park the car right in front of your room. I didn't hear any noise from the neighbors or street. 6) Friendly family business. They said "American-owned", I am not sure why they would say that. But the people were very friendly. 7) A/C worked well. Plenty of cool air and quiet (not always a given at this price range). 8) Free wi-fi. Not very fast, but it worked. 9) Comfortable beds, sheets and pillows. Slept well. 10) Plenty of counter/desk space in the room. 11) They had plenty of clothes hangers, which is something you can never have enough of while traveling as a family. What's not good about it: 1) Shower is old-style. Hard to get the right combination of hot/cold water temperature. 2) Located on the outskirt of town. It takes 5-10 minutes driving to get to downtown Cortez. 3) Small, CRT TV hanging off the wall. Not flat screen. 4) Ice maker didn't work so we couldn't get any ice while we were there. 5) A no-frill motel. Furniture is dated, no decoration to speak of, no hair dryer, very basic toiletries (bring your own), and no fancy lobby or attached restaurant. In summary, White Eagle Inn is a great motel at an unheard of price. read more

Old motel, but very well maintained, very clean, friendly staff. It's not a resort, but for a night or two, it is perfect. It was the cheapest lodging of our trip (except for camping), and it was the best value by far. The ladies liked the cleanliness and friendliness, the man (me) admired the construction quality (cheap materials, excellent attention to detail), and the kids liked having a bed for everybody and a small playground just outside the door to keep them busy while the adults packed, etc. For our situation (3 small kids), it was a better fit than the business-traveler hotels we stayed at. read more

I was traveling with my parents from Telluride to the Grand Canyon and was looking for a family room with three beds so we would all be comfortable. Not only did they have a room with three beds but the price was much more reasonable than anything I found online driving any closer to the Grand Canyon that afternoon.
