I'm 61 years old and have been going to Kelly's Steak House since the early 80's. I can honestly say I've never had a bad meal. The steaks are always great! I've read some reviews complaining of the outdated decor, I guess I don't go there for the ambiance! Younger people tend to enjoy atmosphere over quality of a meal. My family has celebrated many, many birthdays and special events there. I will continue this as long as it's there. You can't beat their Ribeye! read more

Step inside Kelly's and it's like you're back in 1985. Nothing about the place seems to have been updated or renovated since then, from the building to the decor to the glassware to the plates and utensils! Since Kelly's bills itself as a steakhouse and it was my first visit, I homed in on that section of the menu. Strangely, there were no prices listed for any of the steaks. I sprang headlong for the ribeye, baked potato, and caesar salad. Salad and soup came immediately, even before the appetizer I had ordered earlier, which threw off the pacing of my dining experience. Moments later, my ribeye arrived on a hot metal platter, so I had to push aside my unfinished dishes to make space. The ribeye looked good and was cooked to medium rare as requested. But it had absolutely no flavor. I didn't know steak could taste so bland! For real, someone get the cook at Kelly's a pepper mill and box of kosher salt! I was extremely disappointed. The real kicker came when I received the check. $144 for two lame steaks, one shared appetizer, and drinks for two. I wouldn't have had any problem with that total if my meal was excellent, the service was polished, and the atmosphere was elegant -- but Kelly's offers none of those things. This review goes back quite a few years, but reading recent reviews, Kelly's hasn't changed much. Many years ago when I lived about 30 miles from Blacksburg we would eat there about once a month. Over a period of years I spent several thousand dollars there. Back then Mr. Kelly would take your money at the cash register as you were leaving. We took my parents there for a special occasion. They had never been, and I had been hyping the place to them for years. For the first time ever everything was horrible. We had a rude, condescending server. All of the steaks were cooked wrong. The server had a don't care attitude. As we were leaving, having seen me there many times before, and having had brief chit chats in the past, Mr. Kelly asked, "How was everything?" Being a relatively young whippersnapper at the time, who respected his elders, I very politely said "Mr. Kelly, for the first time ever it wasn't good tonight. Service was bad, all the steaks were cooked wrong". I wasn't asking for a refund. I did not say it in a hubris way. He asked, and I simply answered. His reply was, "Then don't come back". And guess what? I never did. I lived in the area several more years, but found other steak houses that appreciated my business. I am truly amazed they have been able to stay in business, but reading the many other reviews about the rude service, bad steaks, and near empty restaurant.....hmmmn. read more

Excellent food, service, and great ambiance. My petite filet was cooked perfectly and so was the potato. My husband had hot peel and eat shrimp. He said it was fantastic and his grilled corn was delicious. I highly recommend Kelly's. You need a reservation during Christmas as they are booked with parties. The staff went out of their way to ensure our needs were met. Kelly's is worth the drive and the prices weren't crazy. We will definitely be back. read more

We loved Kelly's. It was our first visit since we live in a neighboring county. The service is great and so is the food. The coconut cake alone is worth the drive. We were the only ones in the dining room that didn't know other diners and the wait staff. It was like a big family. We will definitely be back despite the 45 minute drive. read more

We had a group of eight, with three in our party celebrating birthdays. I called before our reservation to see if I would be allowed to bring a birthday cake with candles to celebrate after the meal. I was told "yes", so my husband and I arrived first in our party, thinking I would just place the cake in the center of the table. Instead, the lady taking us to our seats, asked to take it to the kitchen. Our server was especially attentive and had a very pleasing personality. After seeing we had completed our meals, she began clearing the table. She then presented the cake, candles ablaze, with additional plates and silverware on a linen clad serving cart. All in all, the food was delicious and the service we received was sensational. It was a very pleasing night out, enjoyed by our entire group. We will definitely be back in the near future. It's hard to believe no one has reviewed this gem in Blacksburg. I have been eating here for over 30 years, and it is one of the best places to get a steak anywhere. #1 Big Texan in Amarillo #2 Ruths Chris any location and #3 Kelly's Big Texan, too far away. It was an all around bad experience. The waitress had an attitude. It took over 20 minutes to get drinks. She left midway while taking our order to go take someone else their food. The salads were Good, but the ranch dressing was as thick as mayo and tasted horrible. Our bread was burnt. The steak was ok. The place was really ran down. The popcorn ceiling was chunking off in the dining room. It felt like we were in a mobile home. The bill was over $137 and was so not worth it. We won't come back. Delicious food, nice wait staff, good friends and lots of laughs. I'm critical of a lot but this was an extremely positive experience.

My medium well steak was bloody and kind of expensive. Server apologized and offered to recook it but the outside was already burnt so that would have made it worse. Never offered to get a manager or anything. I normally dont complain but this was rediculous for the prices they charge the steak should have been cooked perfect. My wifes medium steak was rare also Wont be retuning here again. read more

Went to Kelly's last night and it was great! I had the 6oz blackened filet with mushrooms and onions and steak fries. Also had the French onion soup in place of the salad ... hubby had two apps shrimp cocktail and blackened oysters and grilled corn on the cob. Everything was so good, hot and fresh! We will definitely be back soon! Only complaint was I really wanted a piece of the blackberry cake and they didn't have any but it was ok! This place has fantastic food, and the service is excellent. It also has a 60's retro look to it, if you're into that sort of thing. The only thing wrong with Kelly's Steak House is its location, which is definitely off the beaten path. If you could pick up the building and transport it to be right off I-85, the number of customers would double or triple, once word got out. read more

Worst food ever!!! The server was rude and used foul language. Then to make it worse the owner is in denial about how absolutely awful the food is!! The double sirloin is the worst cut of meat we have EVER HAD!! Granted we had a party of 6. 3 orders were for double sirloin and all 3 had to be sent back! Raw on the inside and burnt to a crisp on the outside! And can you believe that she still made us pay for the food we didn't eat!!! The fact that there was only two other tables eating with an empty parking lot should have been our first warning sign, the second should have been how the establishment smelled like a funeral home or nursing home! Overall a pleasant experience. Coming south from kings mountain we were initially led the wrong way with google maps but on the second try found it. Arrived at 745pm without a need to wait. Order was taken in a timely manner and husband got his salad within just a few minutes. Our food however did not arrive for close to 30 minutes, hence the rating. Husband thought his steak and potato was great, my scallops, shrimp and pasta dish with peas on the side was good too/ not great though. Very disappointed. Took my husband out for his birthday last night. Smell of the building was musty. Hidden Valley Ranch dressing was served w the lettuce and carrots aka "salad". My steak was barely warm and tasted like it was cooked yesterday then reheated in the microwave. Years ago this place was fantastic, don't know what has happened. Spent $77 hard earned dollars on crap. Hardee's would have been better and I hate Hardee's. Don't waste your time or money. read more

Will never be back. The service was terrible and it took forever to get our food. The restaurant has been around for many years and no updates have been made. The carpet is grungy and needs to be replaced, the ceiling is chipping, and they have duct tapes on chairs. For the price of the food they really should do renovations. Everything was brought out in a timely manner and was cooked to perfection! We love our visits to Kelly's and are blessed it is close enough for us to visit fairly regular. My girlfriend and I went to Kelly's this past Saturday night. The first issue was that the building was so cold that many diners were wearing coats while trying to eat their dinner. We complained to the waitress who did nothing about it. When our soup arrived it was barely above room temperature and we had to send it back twice to get it to an acceptable temperature. We then proceeded to wait over an hour and 15 minutes for our steaks to arrive even though the restaurant was less than half full at the time. I ordered my steak cooked medium and it arrived rare. I sent the steak back and they brought it back to me in five minutes and it had only gone from rare to medium rare. I guess the kitchen does not have a meat thermometer. The center of the steak was not even warm. When I finally tasted the steak it had absolutely no flavor or seasoning what so ever. I've been many nice steakhouses but this is one that I will never darken their door again. After all of our issues no heat the soup not hot waiting an unacceptable amount of time for dinner and then to have the entrée not cook properly the waitress offered to comp my glass of iced tea! read more

Sad to see the demise of Kelly's. Have been eating there several times a year for over thirty years and referred dozens of people there - no more. Went there with reservations on Valentines day 2013. Got there early for 7:00 pm res. And left at 9:15 with nothing to eat as did several others who were already there when we arrived. Appears the current owner has no respect for their customers. Was there for annual Christmas dinner also-mid-week- not crowded and still took well over an hour to get meal. That group had been going there since mid 80s but will not be going back. I was at Kelly's on Friday, April 20th, 2012 and had the worst experience of my life! Two of the people in our party did not receive their food and all of the orders were wrong. All places make mistakes but the worst was the ATTITUDE of all of the employees, including the waitresses, reservation lady and most of all the OWNER Ann Kelly!!!!! They were very defensive, never got the food out to the people and were totally rude, unprofessional and unbelievable in their response to our needs! There were very few people in the restaurant and now I know why. They seemed irritated that we added two extra people to our party, but they should have been thankful to have two more customers! This restaurant has gone totally downhill since the original owners passed away. We live in another city and Kellys used to be awesome and we went there several times a year with a large group of people. We will NEVER EVER set foot in this establishment again and have already told MANY, MANY people of our experience there. Although our party spent over $400 there, they were not willing to comp 4 beers ordered by the people with no food!! The waitress said she was going to have to take it out of her pay, so of course we paid for the beers to prevent that from happening. I feel sorry for anyone who works there and will make sure that everyone we encounter will not go there again. What a shame that what used to be a great place to eat is now the worst ever!! read more
