Interesting store, perhaps besides the post office the hub of the town. Part small engine repair, restaurant, and convenience store? Well, these folks didn't model their business on Bucee's. And that's totally fine. With about three or four roads in and out of town it's not exactly major roads. Apparently, the counter person is also the chief cook, dishwasher, and mechanic lol? Well folks, the fast lane came to town a few Saturdays ago with a bunch of my buddies. I had been told the staff always seemed annoyed when they arrived for bathroom breaks. This was my first stop here; had passed several times and never stopped in on the way to Boerne. Learned the secret of the spark plug! Grabbed a sports drink and waited in line at the counter. I also heard that the brownies were amazing and a few spots ahead a customer sent said staffer into the back to check for them. Well, after 5 minutes I gave up and returned said drink to the cooler. You'll notice I'm not all over the one star BS; just an observation that perhaps more staff is needed on the weekend. Lots of Texans take the weekend to drive out of their general area to check out the Hill Country. We moved onto the Fredericksburg area for our lunch. When I happened upon the Kendalia General Store on a recent road trip, I suspected it would be a hidden gem, the kind of place I could put on the map with a laudatory review and lots of tantalizing pictures. It certainly checked many boxes: a ramshackle building festooned with random knickknacks ("Texas Chainsaw Massacre" house aesthetic), a curmudgeonly cashier/proprietor, and a local claim to fame (or as close to "famous" something gets in Kendalia, Texas) in the form of a burger slathered with peanut butter. As I waited (and waited...and waited) for my burger to arrive, my intuition told me that this would be a missed opportunity, that my "hidden gem" would amount to mere cubic zirconia. Alas, my intuition was correct. As I entered, I received no acknowledgment, verbal or otherwise, from the beady-eyed, bespectacled woman behind the counter. Aren't small town folk warm and ingratiating by nature? Having committed the "Squeal like a pig" scene from "Deliverance" to memory, I can answer that question on my own. Okay, maybe she wasn't that bad, but her icy demeanor was a harbinger of things to come. When I inquired about the rumored peanut butter burger, she belted out rudely, "Kuhn? You mean the Kuhn burger." Uh, yeah, I guess that's what it's called. How dumb of me not to know. "Does it contain two patties?", I inquired. "No," she replied. "Well, okay, I'll take that and some fries." "No fries, just chips." She then pointed at the wall of chips behind me and waited coldly as I made my selection. The wait for my Kuhn burger seemed excessive considering I was the only patron. I'm not one to count the minutes, but it exceeded twenty. Despite the wait, I was willing to forgive and forget if the burger lived up to my lofty expectations. Alas, it did not. The patty was thin, hard, and cooked well done. The onions needed more time on the flattop (caramelization equals flavor), the bun was cold and store bought, and the peanut butter overwhelmed the other flavors. In any burger, balance is a key factor. One must consider the ever-so-important burger-to-bun ratio, the quantity of toppings, and how said toppings complement one another. In this instance, the burger needed about twice the amount of meat, thicker slices of bacon, and about one-third the amount of peanut butter. It was edible but far from being the bastion of burger bodaciousness I had craved. The photo of the huge, juicy burger featured here on Yelp looks nothing like the one I received. Dining options are scarce in Kendalia, so if you require sustenance, then the Kendalia General Store will at least fill your tummy. Perhaps order a club sandwich instead or maybe the daily special, which was King Ranch chicken when I visited. Let's see...what else can I say? Kendalia has a cemetery. I talked to dead people there, so at least there's that. read more

This place was super cute!! The prices are amazing for how big the sandwich is. It was $6.50 for the MASSIVE sandwich. I got the triple decker club on wheat and a bag of chips. Highly recommend coming here! read more

The burger was just ok for me. I gave 3 stars due to the flavor of the burger was really good, and cheese was melted perfectly. Patty tasted previously frozen, basic iceberg lettuce, mustard, etc. The service, I found quite amusing. The employee working was nice to the local regulars. I asked about fries and she snapped at me, said "No, we ain't got no fries!" Something like that. Then, she gave us 1 napkin each and asked if we wanted ketchup??? Not for the fries but for the burger, whatever. As we were finishing she stood and stared at us. I told her the burger was good, she said " well, was it ok?" I said yes. I was not expecting a gourmet meal by any means, so it was ok for what it was. We were the only ones wearing masks there, so maybe that got her fired up, I guess. No fast food here. Great cheeseburger with bacon, fresh lettuce and tomato, grilled onions on a sesame seed bun, with a side of sweetened iced tea - all for under $10 including a $1 tip. Worth every penny. It's worth the stop - just to be reminded of a way of life that used to be. read more
