Okay, I need to make a confession here. I have been a parishioner for over 20 years, and before…read morethat I was a frequent church hopper. So, of course I am going to rate my parish highly; if I didn't like it, I would have left long ago. I have found the parish to be inclusive, fairly tolerant (although, this IS a Catholic Church!), and responsive to the needs of our local, national, and global communities. St. Edwards is a large Catholic parish, and pretty progressive. We have several ministries for lay involvement, both within the liturgy and within the community. We also have a parish council, an active KoC group, several other social groups, and religious education for all ages. Since the pandemic, we have also streamed two Masses a week, as well as baptisms, funerals, etc. Confession is on Saturday and after the daily Masses. For music, it really depends on the Mass you attend, although most of them use the Gather hymnal as our main source. I don't frequently attend the Saturday vigil Mass, but it's similar to the 7:15 Mass, and generally offers just piano music, a cantor, and no choir. The 8:45 Mass sometimes adds an extra instrument or two, and a choir (or the children's choir) during the school year. The 11:00 Mass has a full choir and usually chamber music, but they again get summers off. The Sunday evening Mass uses electric guitars, drums, and whatnot with a decidedly more modern Christian-rock flavor. Other things: lots of parking, a beautiful-and-peaceful columbarium, people available at Mass to answer questions, an engaged parish staff available during the week, very active youth ministry, and lots of community involvement.

There is ample of parking space for parishioners and visitors, lots of seating, friendly people all around, and its a nice semi-big church. What I loved about this church is that, they ACTUALLY get to hold hands, during the "Our Father" prayer. It is commonly seen in the south, specifically Houston, Texas. But after moving here, people do not hold hands and are to themselves - which is okay, to each their own. I just feel the love from the parishioners here. Con - No crying room. Which was fine by me, I just would hate to be a distraction to other parishioners who may find other kids annoying. Toddlers will be toddlers. We just stayed in the back of the church. If I had to nitpick one little thing, that would be what Roneous E had mentioned on his review. The prayer for the health of Pius Gastronome, that we repeat the first name of the name. I wouldn't go so far to say it was zombie-like or it seemed like a mental derangement, which is untrue. It's very different for me.. and may be for others. Just shrug and move along..

Then the musical pastor came out and it all became creepy and that's when the stars dropped! The production - phenomenal! The number of people that were part of it was mind boggling and we're talking regular people like you and me. Not Broadway performers! But I'm telling you, they were good! A must see! But....leave right after the last act! After the last act, the musical pastor came out and spoke about a little about the production but no real praise for the cast. He praised the sound guys and then he had us sing O Little Town of Bethlehem. Nice touch. He then starts singing another song on his own and I honestly now felt like I was at a concert for someone I didn't really want to see.....THEN, all of these women dresses purely in white with caps on their heads started entering the sanctuary two by two and walking as if they were in a wedding. You know the 'march'. This is when it got creepy. Anyone who has watched The Handmaid's Tale will know what I'm talking about! The man is still singing his heart out and then ANOTHER man starts singing and the women (there might have been a couple guys dressed up too!) keep marching to the stage. Then man #3 starts singing and Jesus and the angels drop from the ceiling and I'm wanting to leave because I am feeling like this has now turned in to a concert highlighting these men who are surrounded by what appears as subservient women. Nothing about the epic performance of the cast. No curtain calls for them. Just glory for the men! I would love to see it again but would definitely leave when the true performers finished.

All the proceeds from the show goes to Shalom Farms. The architecture both inside and outside of the church was beautiful, and the acoustics were awesome. I've never worshiped here on Sundays, but just the beauty and location gets 5 stars from me.

After learning that our son was not being treated with the correct level of care at another local daycare, we moved him to Grace Covenant when he was about 4 months old. I immediately felt welcome by everyone there. The staff were smart, articulate and loving. My mama's instinct said this was the place, and it was absolutely true. Ms. Wilma and Ms. Julia are my son's primary daycare providers, and I have never met sweeter ladies. My son smiles each morning when he sees Ms. Wilma (he's not a big smiler) and I know that he loves her like a grandma! They are so good to my son, and never make me feel like a "stupid first time mom" or that I'm overbearing for asking too many questions, like the last daycare had me believing. They keep me informed on everything going on, good or bad, and ask lots of questions to make sure they are up to date on his progress. My other daycare did none of this. I also love that many of the helpers are students at VCU. They are smart, driven and love the kids very much. At my last daycare, you weren't exactly dealing with the cream of the crop for these positions. I would rather have a smart and driven young woman watching my son, even if they don't plan on staying long term, than a lot of the duds that we had at the first daycare with lots of experience. I know as a mom it's hard to figure out who you can trust with your baby. The best advice I would give is listen to your mama instinct. Talk to the teachers, and make sure they feel passionate about the job they are doing. Grace Covenant checked all the boxes for me.

Mass schedule on the weekend is 5:30 on Saturday night and 9, 11, 1, and 6 (in Spanish) on Sunday. This is a great parish if you are looking for a more diverse crowd. Father Mike is very friendly and the congregation is as well. I went through RCIA at this church and was very glad I went through the process in such a welcoming environment. It can get a bit crowded sometimes at the more popular mass times, but people seem to be more courteous than some other churches and actually move to the middle of the pews. I also like that pretty much everyone joins hands during the Lord's Prayer - it gives a much better sense of community. It might not be the prettiest church on the outside, but those individuals looking for a strong and welcoming faith community will feel at home.
