Our family visited using the Atlanta City Pass (which I highly recommend if you are visiting more than one Atlanta attraction). Upon arrival, visitors receive a card and create a profile. This allows visitors to interact throughout the museum and take some crazy photos! If you are not a football fan, that is a super-fun feature everyone can enjoy. For football fans, there are films, photos, trophies, awards and more that show the history of college football. Another extremely cool feature is the ability to eat on the "field" at the College Football Hall of Fame's own Chick-Fil-A. The menu is standard, but it is a pretty neat experience!

On Friday nights before every Tech home football game in 2011, Central Park in Atlantic Station becomes a giant pep rally for the Yellow Jackets. I passed by the first Tech Town on September 16 before our game against Kansas, but didn't really get the full experience until this past Friday before our game versus Maryland. It was more fun than I expected and the best part of all: it was free. The Ramblin' Wreck was there as well as a ginormous inflatable Buzz, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket Marching Band, Buzz himself, cheerleaders, dance team, Georgia Tech twirlers, and former Jacket athletes. Athletes in attendance included former football players Randy and Kelley Rhino, Sean Bedford, and Felipe Claybrooks. Each was interviewed by the MC and spoke to the crowd over the mike. I spent a few minutes talking to Sean Bedford and his mom. Bedford, an aerospace engineering grad and First Team All-ACC selection, is best known for helping Tech win the 2009 ACC title. He let me check out his awesome conference championship ring. The women's basketball team was also at the fan fest, signing autographs and posing for photos. Tailgaters Alley, one of the best stores to find Georgia Tech merchandise, had several tents set up, selling everything from clothing to car accessories. There were other various tents set up specifically for the event, including one that sold beer and food. Tech football highlights played non-stop on a giant projection screen (the same one Atlantic Station uses for its movie nights). Two stages were set up and a couple bands played. One was a bluegrass band and the other was a rock band. Throughout the night, the MC would give away all sorts of free Tech gear, mostly t-shirts. The highlights of the night were the cheerleading and dance routines, Buzz, and the fireworks. The fireworks went off at 9:30pm sharp. The Georgia Tech and Atlantic Station web sites say the Friday Night Fan Fests run from 6pm to 10pm, but the action this past Friday really did not start until 7pm. Tech Town also runs Saturdays of the home football games. Fans attending the game can park their vehicles (RVs included) in Atlantic Station for $10 and take an air-conditioned shuttle to and from the stadium. Also, if you show your football tickets to many of the restaurants and retailers in Atlantic Station, you can get discounts. Tech is able to partner with a neighboring community to develop more buzz and exposure for the school and its athletic programs, and hopefully gain new fans along the way. Atlantic Station is able to add another fun, family-friendly event to it's lineup and generate more business for the development. While it was a good event, I did see some areas that could have been improved upon. I think Tech and/or Atlantic Station could have done a better job communicating to the public exactly what to expect at the fan fest. A good example is the former athletes that attended the event -- I don't think there was any announcement that these guys were going to be there. If there was such an announcement, I'm sure the turnout would have been better. Only two home games remain on the schedule which means only two more Friday Night Fan Fests. They will take place on October 28 (before the 10/29 game vs. Clemson) and November 25 (before the 11/26 game vs. UGA). Go Jackets!

Organized co-ed adult league kickball is very, very popular right now (and has been the past four…read moreor five years) in the young adult communities in many cities as both a social scene and also as a new recreational activity. WAKA (World Adult Kickball Association) seems to be the most popular kickball league in Atlanta, though it's getting some stiff competition lately from Go Kickball. WAKA games are played at Hammond Park near Perimeter Mall (In the Sandy Springs / Dunwoody area) and at Piedmont Park in Midtown. Occasionally other league game play locations become an additional option (Candler Park, Coan Park, or Marcus Center). Park play venues and days of the week that games are played are denoted by Divisions (Thrasher, Lightning, Liberty etc) You can register as an individual (free agent) and they will place you on a team. You can also sign up with 15 or so friends and create your own team. Fees vary, but generally run between 65 to 75 dollars for an eight week season. For your money, in addition to organized game play, you get a tee shirt and 2-3 season parties (typically at the league bar). The fee finances 2 or three parties at the league bar (where all the teams gather for after-game socializing, drinking and eating). League members also get discounts at the league bar on certain beverages and food items (but you often have to ask your server or bartender). Said discounts are only good on game day (rain or shine) even if games get canceled due to bad weather conditions. There are similarities and differences when comparing WAKA with Go Kickball. Both organizations have the "Kickball Culture" thing going which I will attempt to describe. Both are dominated by young professional types, mostly single, in their mid twenties to early thirties. You will find a small percentage are folks just out of college and, even fewer, some folks in their mid to late thirties; however, they make up an even smaller percentage. Many married / engaged / otherwise involved couples will also play on teams with or without their single comrades. Some describe the culture as akin to people re-living their frat / sorority days. The culture is also similar to the Hash Hound Harriers in that imbibing (before, during and after game play) is prevalent. Also similar to HHH , team names often have sexual innuendo in them (Multiple Scorgasms, Big Red Balls, My Couch Pulls Out But I Don't, ..Etc). There seems to be a fair amount of hooking up or coupling going on (among the singles who play kickball mainly to meet significant others) but with the numbers game of 60% guys and 40% women, the women have the clear advantage in that area. The most attractive and aggressive men generally have the advantage in beating the odds. WAKA generally has better parties but is more clique heavy / insular; whereas, Go Kickball generally (but not necessarily) has better, or more lively, after game socializing at the league bar. Go Kickball perhaps has more play venue / park choice options with leagues at Piedmont Park (Midtown), Central City Park (Downtown) , Cobb Park (Smyrna), Lynwood Park (Brookhaven) and ?Park (Kennesaw). If you are new to Atlanta (or any city where kickball is offered through one of the two organizations) Kickball is great way to meet new friends. Since most people have not played the game since grade school / middle school, everyone is starting out on a relatively level playing field. Soccer players definitely have an advantage from an offensive weapon standpoint.

Clark Atlanta's art museum is a small but mighty jewel in the heart of Atlanta. The museum is on…read moreClark's beautiful campus on the second floor of historic Trevor Arnett Hall, which houses the university's admissions office on the first floor. You are first greeted by a series of spectacular murals in the "atrium" space which trace African contributions to society, art, and culture. The museum hosts rotating exhibitions to showcase both local artists as well as other artists of color. Due to COVID restrictions I'm not sure whether the museum is currently open to the public. Their website indicates that tickets will be available in early October 2021. I had the opportunity to visit while on campus for a work meeting and was blown away. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and friendly.

And eepecially when they play Braves right when for example, spring training is televised! That's a win!!!! Hank Aaron was the first Braves player I couldn't get enough of! Wow! What a fantastic athelete! Hall of Famer, right fielder, and broke the long+standing MLB record for career home runs held by Babe Ruth! I remember watching Hank knock them out of the park as a little girl...I was completely enamored! It's notable that President Carter was a personal friend of Aaron's and hosted Hank at the Oval Office in 1978. Nice job President!
