Dr Hovden is a leader in Cosmetic dentistry, but first he is a leader in good dentistry. I need a crown so my damaged tooth needed a lot of sculpting for the impression. I didn't feel a thing! I heard lots of whirring, but felt no pain, not even the local anesthetic. Afterwards, when the local wore off, I had no discomfort. Dr. Hovden is the most thorough dentist I've ever seen. And I've jumped around quite a bit. Most dentists I've seen are acceptable, but not exceptional. I went to see Dr. Hovden because I'm interested in veneers, due to wear (grinding), particularly on 1-2 teeth. Other cosmetic dentists I've seen have jumped straight into a full smile makeover proposal, but Dr. Hovden wants to understand the full health of my mouth. It started with an online cosmetic consultation. I sent photos and Dr. Hovden made a video recording with his comments and examples of other similar work he has done. In person, Dr. Hovden took the time to understand the full health of my mouth and other factors. He asked about my IBS, snoring, diet, etc. He took very thorough photos. He checked not just for decay and wear, but for oral cancer, jaw health, gum health. He made a model of my teeth, but digitally, not with the clay other dentists put in your mouth. Pretty advanced stuff. Now I'm switching all my records to do my general dentistry here too. I'll come back and update this review with my results. Dr. Hovden worked with my periodontal implant surgeon, Dr. Paola Guglielmoni, to create implant-supported dentures for all of my upper and lower teeth. I have advanced periodontal disease, and my teeth were rotting, loose and falling out (see "before" photo below). This was a 2 year process which involved 2 major oral surgeries, 1 upper and 1 lower in which ALL of my teeth were removed, implants screwed in, and the full denture attached. Dr. Hovden's role was to measure my mouth, jaws, existing teeth and create upper and lower dentures to exactly fit the implants placed by Dr. Guglielmoni. This involved crafting 2 temporary and 1 final appliance for the upper and lower teeth. He did this with such precision, craftsmanship and attention to detail AND literally held my hand during the surgery while the implants were being screwed in! Aside from the technical aspects of fitting the appliance which is a feat in itself, Dr. Hovden had a great sense of artistry when it came to color, size and texture of the dentures. If everything was not perfect, he sent it back until it was. He is also a really good photographer both professionally and recreationally. Due to the level of detail and very involved process, I saw Dr. Hovden a lot over that time period. His office and clinical staff were always friendly and professional and he was always flexible with scheduling when needed. I highly recommend Dr. Ken Hovden. He is an expert in his field, regularly teaches and takes continuing education classes, is kind, compassionate and professional!! This review is just for a consultation, I haven't had any work done here... YET. I'm still shopping around (I don't have any dental insurance) but had to write up a review for Dr. Hovden because he is just so awesome. :) He provided an in-depth consultation with great insight and knowledge. I was blown away by his sincere kindness and *free* invaluable advice. I've never gotten that from anyone in the health industry. I've always felt other Dr's wouldn't give me the time of day because of the no insurance thing, but from the first moment I walked in the door, I was greeted very warmly by the Dr. himself, filled out the customary forms and was taken back for my appt. within 2 seconds. Well it seemed that quick. I was so impressed that I'm now writing this review. I have a few other consultations but I have a very good feeling I'll be coming back to Dr. Hovden. Update 3/27/13: I went in today for an exam, x-rays and cleaning. I was planning on spending between $400 - $450 according to the nice lady that scheduled my appt. I spent $500.00 but was not able to get the cleaning done. I need deep cleaning (and other treatments) which will run me somewhere like $5000.00! This doesn't even include the cosmetic part of what I need done. I truly appreciate the excellent work that is done here at Dr. Hovden's office, but I don't see myself coming back here - I simply cannot afford their services. read more

We chose Dr. Hovden because of the great reviews. My husbands experience getting a crown replaced did not go as well as we hoped. They use a laboratory in Southern California so the wait time is 6 weeks. After doing some research the usual turnaround is 2 weeks. We assumed that lab was so good that their work would be exemplary. When the crown arrived the fit and color were wrong. Had to wait a few more weeks for the replacement. The fit was good but the color was still off a bit. The Dr. said he would send it back and make it right, but by this time my husband was not willing to wait anymore and has just decided to live with it. His prices are high and we expected a better initial result without having to keep coming back. read more

This review is LONG overdue! Ken is a wonderful dentist and it's taken me years to finally find a dentist I love in SF. I went to Ken wanting veneers for my two front teeth. While my issues weren't huge, it definitely was something I wanted to do for years. I had quotes from other dentists that were cheaper, but they would've had to shave my teeth down completely and I'd lose strength and the core of my natural teeth. Ken made it possible to save my teeth while adding the thinnest veneers possible. I'm so happy with my new front teeth I could cry! He walked me through the process step by step and made sure that I was aware of everything that would happen along the way. His main concern is keeping the strength and health of your teeth, which is so important when requesting cosmetic work! No shortcuts with Ken! A dentist I no longer respect or trust. He told me he would be upfront with me regarding all prices. When I didn't want 4 K in additional dental work he tried to charge me $200 to remove my upper attachment. I spoke several times to him regarding the fact that I never wanted to go back to Dr Randhawa and Dr Hovden told me he would remove the attachment for free. I've been very direct with Dr Hovden that I found his attempt to charge me an additional $200 a sleazeball tactic when I wouldn't give him the 4k for veneers and more. He's fully aware that I'm a student and simply didn't have an additional 4K. He also had his receptionist tell me that the $200 was on my written plan of payments but I have a copy and it wasn't AVOID DR HOVDEN. There are far better dentists out there. read more
