He not only provided QuickBooks files for when they prepared my tax returns for my business, but when I changed to being an SCorp, he took the time to explain to me the differences between being an LLC and an SCorp: In terms I could easily understand. And he let me ask as many questions as I wanted, which was a joy for me, as I like to learn and understand. You won't get service like Ken's In this day and age from a book, a video, or anything else. Ken is a Real Human Being, and I like his down-to-earth way of explaining even the most complex subjects about businesses or taxes. This CPA is a Scam, Read the other 1 star reviews, and look at the ones on Yelp that have been hidden, and also removed by Ken. You'll see I'm not the only person who was scammed by him. I beleive all the good reviews are left by family or friends. He takes a ton of money then never files your taxes yet demands you pay more and even tries to take you to court. Luckly the judge saw his record and the case was dropped because yet again Ken was trying to rip off clients. read more

Please see my review of Ken which I posted on 12/18/14. I have now received a check for many thousands of dollars from the State of Illinois that my evil sister's accountant had taken and put in the family trust that my sister got control of..separate from my trust. So I will repeat my previous commets. With his expertise and business savvy it took him many, many hours, and relentless determination, plus reams of paperwork, and late hours, in addition to speaking with my lawyer, my financial advisor, my sister's Law Firm, as well as her accountant to get this money for me I would not have known that I was even due that money if it wasn't for Ken. After a few years of searching, I am returning to KPR for another tax season. His firm has done well for my daughter for years and I can't seem to find a qualified CPA that isn't expensive. Although my returns were costly, they were done professionally and completed on time with no complaints from the IRS. My overall experience with Ken very positive and productive. He seems to be a very knowledgeable professional who delivered a nice package after a reasonable time. I skimmed over both the positive and negative comments made about Ken. His fees seem in line with other CPAs after checking with some of my friends. For all those who complained about paying for his early work is like taking your car for repair. You don't get it back till you pay for services performed. This was honestly the worst experience I've had with a white collar professional in my life. He offered me a 15 minute free consultation for a CPA letter I needed which he quoted me $300 for the letter if we decided to hire him. We went to his office which is located in a rundown building with very little parking in Skokie. The lot next door belongs to an apartment building which you will get towed from if you park there and there's only 3 spaces for his small office building all of which were occupied. His secretary, Michelle, is very nice but Ken is abrupt in manner and his office is very disorganized in appearance. I overcame my misgivings over the lack of professionalism in his office and spent 20 minutes talking to him, where it became apparent he wanted to do at least 10-12 hours of work for the letter. He said his standard rate is $325 per hour and I told him I did not want to pay 3-4 thousand dollars for this letter, I would rather go to someone else and have it done cheaper. He then said I owed him $325 for the time I spent talking to him. I asked him about the free consultation and he denied it was free and demanded that I Zellepay him $325 right there. I then asked him about the $300 price for the letter that he quoted me, and which he didn't even write, and he said that didn't include his hourly fee either. I couldn't get my app to work at the time since I hadn't set it up before so I left without paying him but ever since then he has been harassing me with calls and emails, demanding $325 for the 'work' that he did and threatening to send his attorney after me to collect. I offered to pay him $50 for the time spent with him past 15 minutes but he refused and wanted the full $325 even though we talked for less than 30 minutes. Before you hire this person, please read all the other negative reviews on him which outline his unsavory practices. His rate of $325/hr is excessively high for a CPA, especially one with an office that looks like a bomb made of paper went off in it - one review mentioned he charged them for the time it took to find papers he lost in his office and I believe it having seen in person how he keeps it. Looking at other CPA's and their hourly rates, it's typically around the $150/hr range. Plus, I've hired attorneys with decades of experience for cheaper than $325/hr, and they've consulted with me on the phone and in their office for an hour or more and never tried to send me a bill for it. He did ZERO work for me outside of the free consultation, even the scanner on his cluttered desk wasn't working at the time so the files I brought for him to look at he barely glanced at, he just told me to 'scan them myself and email it to him'. He was also strangely nosy and pushy during the consultation, my husband was with me and he asked him his name, DOB and SS#. Why would you need all of my husband's information when you're just writing a letter for me? He honestly just comes across as a bully and a greedy, money-grubbing person. And none of the clients that I saw come through his office looked like they could readily afford thousands of dollars in CPA fees so I feel that he's trying the same pushy, deceptive, bullying tactics on them as well. Most of his other bad reviews say the same, he charges them way more than they thought they were going to pay and then he threatens to sue if you don't pay him. It's really sad that he's taking advantage of people who only make a fraction of what he makes but the world is full of people like that, unfortunately. He keeps saying he's been in business since the 80's well that just makes me feel like he's been this type of unsavory businessperson for decades. Please people, I implore you to avoid this CPA at all costs, choose almost anyone else. Why anyone would pay this sloppy, disorganized so-called 'professional' with non-working office equipment over twice what most CPA's charge is beyond me. You can do better than Ken Rapoport, that's how unpleasant my experience with Ken was. And I should have known this would go sour, I first contacted him on Thumbtack and when he called me for the first time he literally called me 5 times in a row, hanging up and then calling again when I didn't pick up. I dropped what I was doing and picked up thinking it was some sort of emergency from an unknown number but it was Ken Rapoport blowing up my phone after my Thumbtack inquiry. Hey Ken, have you ever heard of voicemail? Leave a message and I'll get back to you, like normal people do. But no, when he wants you on the phone he'll call 20x in a row if he has to because that's just how important he is, in his mind. He just started off bizarrely pushy and demanding like that and it just got worse from there. I blame myself for even making an appointment with him. I do not recommend going here. I was looking for a long-term CPA, but I just met a con. He requested I sign an agreement and place a deposit before he started the work. So far so good, he's been very very kind, thorough, and helpful -- the sticker shock can be a bit overwhelming at first, especially if you're not used to working with professional accountants -- but we always feel we get our money's worth in navigating exceedingly complex tax law. He also rushed to get my taxes done in time when I got him my documentation at the eleventh hour, which was much appreciated. I didn't have a CPA and was late getting my taxes going. I went on Thumbtack and found Ken Rapoport, CPA. He got back to me quickly and agreed to help me with my taxes. I felt so lucky because many tax preparers are very busy so close to the cut-off date. I was going through a very difficult time in my life and it took me quite a while to get documents to Ken, but I finally got them to him as scanned documents. Unfortunately, one of the documents was very difficult to read due to smudges and wrinkles. The other copies were too small to read. Ken communicated the issues to me and I tried to figure out how to send better copies. I was so busy at that time and I rarely had enough time to do anything extra. Plus it was past April 15th (or 17th?). Not good! When Ken let me know that he was able to make the paperwork legible I was so grateful and a bit impressed. Ken and I did have some difficulties communicating and as a result, misunderstandings occurred. Not a big surprise with the stressors going on in my personal life. Ken was very patient and understanding with me and we were able to work it out using patience and open, honest discussions. He successfully got my taxes completed and sent them to me for my review...with an extension of course . It all worked out to form a congenial working relationship and a highly valuable educational process for me. I would strongly recommend Ken Rapoport to anyone. He is thorough, professional, efficient, and yes, even understanding. Plus, his fees are quite reasonable. I DO NOT RECOMMEND HIM!!!!.. I took an apointment with ken in order to do my personal and business taxes. I asked him in the first meeting how much it will cost me if he provides me the service. He said he has no idea. Then I told him it is important for me to know since I will not be able to pay high fees. Then he said my taxes are cmplicated. (I have two job, one K1, some gains and some interest income, that is all that went on my personal returns. My buiness return had 3 apartment rental income only!!. the returns were so easy to do.) So i told hime give me an idea if what he THINKS. he said it will be around $1500-2000. And I was like fine. He then took a $500 retainer. So he takes few days to do my returns and then bills me $1700 for the services. So now my total is around $2200.00 Then in may he sents me another bill for $688.40 for services. so now my bill is $2888.40 for a personal return and a S-corporation return (gross 30,000 ~ K). I think he pulls the bills out of no where, just to make money he ruined his relationship with me. I was seriously thinking to give him the accounting services for all my companies. Around six of them. But his billing is so misleading that I changed my mind. I sent around about four customers and even they complained about his billing. read more

Unprofessional and dishonest. I hired Ken to do estate taxes. He quoted me between $2000 and $2500 total the two times I spoke with him on the phone. I signed an engagement letter and sent him a retainer, hoping for a quick and painless business transaction. What I got, was anything but. Over the course of our communications, I got no less than 5 spam porn emails from his AOL account, which was annoying. I suppose it's not really my business what Ken does in his free time, but personally, I wasn't interested in the penis enlargement that one of Ken's emails proclaimed would change my life. He billed me for "communication" charges that added up to over 12 hours worth of time, even though we only sent 23 emails (not including the spam) back and forth, including nearly a dozen that were one-liners, and another half dozen that were in RE: billing. I asked for a detailed accounting of the time, which he refused to provide. He then attempted to state that they were part of the regular time that he put into doing the taxes, even though I have separate invoices for that service. When it was all said and done; he wanted over $4500 from me, and threatened to take me to court over it if I didn't pay up. After reading other reviews of Ken's business; apparently, this is his M.O. My regular accountant agreed that this was out of the ordinary. Admittedly, It's my own fault for not getting his original quote in writing, but I take someone at their word. If they say between $2000 and $2500, I expect it to be in that range, and if it's going to be over that amount, they'd better be giving me a call and indicating that BEFORE billing me anything beyond that. In my case, this wasn't done, and here I am, telling you about my $2000+ lesson, which I hope you will learn from. In the end, I would not rely on him to stick to his word, and would not recommend hiring him. Reading the other reviews of Ken on Yelp, I'm not the only one that has had problems with Ken and there are other examples on other sites as well. I have contacted the CPA board in regards to Mr. Rapoport's deceptive practices, and I encourage anyone else who has had a problem with him to do the same. read more

Beware. I ended up paying Ken well over $1,000 for nothing. Sure, he claims he did this or that, but I never saw anything he did. No taxes, no work, no other work. I only met with him on two occasions. An initial consultation and then a 2 hour meeting. After that I never met him again until our court date. I think Ken Rapoport is a big scam. Check out the Cook County Court website. Most CPA's have sued people zero times. Ken Rapoport has what looks like dozens. Be very careful of CPA scams. read more

He's gone to bat for me with the IRS, ironed out challenging tax situations and overall performed very well... particularly when I've been a number of years past-due on various items. He's incredibly knowledgable in the areas of Tax, Finance, Investments, Trusts and overall business structure. The few negative reviewers should understand that Ken charges by the hour, as do any professionals (you have a lawyer, don't you?). I have known Ken for approximately 35 years. I am appalled by some of these negative reviews on Yelp. It's as if they are about a different person than the CPA that I know. When I first moved to the United States, Ken prepared my taxes and I was happy with the service. The only reason Ken has not prepared my taxes in the last 30 years, is because I became a CPA in 1989. With that said, I have seen Ken at several professional continuing education seminars on taxation each and every year. All the negative reviews are dead on. The good ones are most likely written by him. Read them closely, it's fairly obvious. When I hired him I was too naive to do much background research. I should have. Once he found out what I had in my bank, he began to systematically soak me for nonsense "communication" fees with almost weekly invoices. Around 4k over 3 months. I finally told him I wasn't paying him anymore and after a lot of hassle he begrudgingly went away. I then took the returns he'd done to another accountant who had great reviews, learned that Rapoport had done everything wrong - and I mean REALLY wrong! Had the other accountant fix everything and redo everything for a very reasonable $400. The other guy is still my accountant. Be warned. Rapoport's a snake. Believe the negative reviews. read more

Great Accountant, Easy to deal with. I hired Ken and his team for setting up a corporation, general accounting as well as personal taxes. He quoted me a fair price on each project, did the work SUPER fast, and I feel that he really helped me (far beyond what all other past accountant could ever do for me). Before I brought my work to Ken, I felt very exposed having fallen 2 years behind in my books and personal taxes - he assured me he could straighten me out, and did so in what I thought was very short order.
