Ken's Market offers a range of items, from basic grocery items to drinks, ice, ice cream, fishing gear, meds, personal care items, and even Shaver Lake merchandise. Moreover, the staff has always been exceptionally friendly and helpful, making our visits all the more pleasant. Got a little bit of everything here, which is great. When camping, this place is usually a stop for us. Why three stars? One star deducted because there are weird signs everywhere of what's not allowed (no restrooms, no pets, no touching, etc. etc.). They are done in an attempt of being "funny," but they aren't funny. I haven't been in elementary school for many decades. I don't need little signs everywhere telling me what I can't do. Another star deducted is because the clothing selection for women seems lacking. There's an opportunity to sell some great tank tops, but the limited choices are goofy. Some cuter styles would result in more purchases. read more

The market has more than the typical needs for travelers to eat/survive while in the mountains. A side addition is their sandwiches and hot beverages to the side as you walk in the door. One can buy a premade sandwich which is good but even better is made to order sandwiches. It is very nice to have while hiking and exploring the beautiful area. There are shirts and gear such as towels and memories to buy in the store also. There is a dog area by the store with water dish and tie up which is handy for those hiking over from Camp Edison. An added convenience below the store is the washing laundry area for visitors. (There is no other laundromats in the mountain area!) I live nearby so I can attest to that fact. Much better than going to the mini-mart at the gas station Loma Vista market which does not have prices on many of their items and will charge you more at the counter based upon how you look...And if you aren't a local you will definitely pay almost double..Definitely go to Ken's market instead. We give this store a chance every year and it is always the same experience. They serve ice cream, which is a tradition for our family after a day at the lake, the Ken's staff is genuinely annoyed with us for wanting to buy their ice cream and even serves it with comments about not wanting to help or this year even some dirty looks and glares. This year we even heard the owner/manager talking about how we'd be back every day as if it was a bad thing. Everything you need and more at this place! The prices are decent. You'll find the ocassional sale/bargain. Other than that it's kind of your only resort in the area. I recommend if you're going to buy firewood waiting for the trucks carrying extra firewood that drive by the campsites instead of purchasing them at the store. They're often cheaper by the trucks as they're usually leftover from a lumbar yard. The couple of times I went into the store they were ran by young women/men who were friendly. The store is well stocked for all your camping, hiking needs whether you're in there for a nice wool blanket or just for some campfire smores! They'll likely have what you came in for. read more

My boyfriend has an emotional support animal, he has extreme severe anxiety and depression. They wouldn't let him in even though we have his registration for a service animal. Complete BS! Store has a little bit of everything when it comes to groceries, produce, variety of spirits and frozen goods. We love the gift shop portion of the market, picked a few shirts and knick knacks to commemorate our visit. Holly was very helpful and outgoing. Everything you need except good tomatoes or good jam and no general meat as far as I can see, just deli meats - would be great if they had tri tip and ground beef - but a good beer selection, wine selection, breakfast lunch and snack selection, some vegetables - good corn, but buy it in the morning before they run out! Pretty much what I have grown to expect when I go to a ski town. Locally owned shops who seem to forget that customer service is important. Yes, Im sure its annoying to be asked similar questions over and over again. But it doesnt take much to just be kind. We stopped in for snowpark passes and water. We asked if they had "flats of water" the counter staff condescendingly replied with "no, we dont have flats of water, we have CASES of water if thats what you mean" as we walk to the back to get the "case" of water she turns to her coworker and says "where are those people from, flats of water arent a thing" Anyways. They are well stocked and have pretty much anything you may have forgotten to grab on your way to the snow. Prices are high, as usual. If the staff had just been kind, I would have given 5 stars. Oh, sode note, they do not have public restrooms, even for customers so go elsewhere for a bathroom break. read more

This place was a super convenient stop right next to our cabin, and the last stop before heading to the lake or the ski resort. Ken's Market had literally anything one could want while on vacation. Whether that be fresh food to whip up meals in your cabin, toiletries you forgot at home, wood at very reasonable prices to burn in the fire, or souvenirs.. they had it. The prices weren't drop dead expensive either considering this is definitely a convenience store. The selection was overwhelming, and I could have spent longer in there just browsing. I was pleased they carried so many options for anyone in the family to be happy while on vacation. Definitely a cost-effective option if you have a kitchen to cook while on vacation. read more

We came to stay in a air b&b cabin in Shaver. Once we got here we realized we left our daughters entire bag at home! Ken's to the rescue! I shop here regularly. Best selection in Shaver Lake and I always try to support the local businesses. Ken's has also been the best in town at promoting safety for shoppers during the pandemic including a sign out front that says, for safety they recommended wearing a mask. I always wear a mask in stores and was please to see they cared about my safety too. However on a recent visit, I was disappointed to see that the staff are no longer wearing masks. When I asked why, I was told, "masks are only recommended and not required" even of the employees. It made me wonder if there are other health and safely recommendations they aren't following. So, I won't be shopping there again until they can follow Health Dept. recommendations. read more

I wen't to Ken's Market at about 4:00 on 12/29/19 to buy some fresh vegetables. Unfortunately, I have a prostate-bladder medical condition that causes me a great deal of pain if I cannot urinate expediantly. I asked to use the restroom at the market but was told that they are not for public use. I said I am a paying customer with a bladder condition. The clerk said that there are public rest rooms further down the road. Firstly, I was shocked by the clerk's in indifference but surprised that an establishment in the hamlet of Shaver Lake would be allowed to continue this practice/policy. While exiting the market I lost control of my bladder function and soiled my garments. I sent a letter to the visitors Bureau. The person from the Bureau, responded promptly with compassion and promised to forward my complaint to the owner. This was over a week ago and I have heard nothing. The silence speaks volumes. read more

One of the worst stores/markets i have ever been to. We were at the lake for the weekend and stopped at Ken's to get some batteries for our camera. We got 2 packs, none of them worked, and 2 of them were actually leaking like they had exploded. Sucked we couldn't take pictures, however it became worse when we got back to Ken's and they said they do not offer any returns/exchanges. The clerk and manager we talked to became extremely rude and basically escorted us out of the store. This all happened about 2 years ago, and needless to say i have never been back and tell everyone to go to Bob's Shaver Lake Market instead. If you're reading this, then most likely you are staying in Shaver Lake and are looking for a place to get groceries. If not then you really are really starved for entertainment. The question that I'm sure is eating at you is do I go Bob or Ken? When you are staying in the mountains and have access to the World Wide Web (WWW) these are the type of things you have time to think about. I struggled for what seamed like hours to find relevant information on either establishments. If one of these businesses invested in a nice, simple website (I recommend Casey Designs) I'm sure they would "shaver" the competition (LOL). I picked up my cellular telephone and called Kens on a whim. I was so nervous when I heard a dial-tone. I started to think "maybe this was a big mistake." I was immediately put at ease with the friendly voice on the other end. After some witty banter I acquired the hours of operation and was thrilled that I had time to make it before closing time. A little backstory before I get to the actual review. I'm staying with a group of amazing, thoughtful women, a few dogs, and two other males. The ethnicity of each doesn't matter. If you think it does I've got one word, "tolerance", learn about it. As per their usual MO the females were requesting hot fudge and ice cream. I had to pass by Bob's Market on the way to Ken's and for a split-second I almost swerved into the parking lot, but I stayed true and remembered that voice on the other end of the phone just minutes ago. I pulled into Ken's parking area, which was ample BTW, and found a comfortable spot. Their was plenty of lighting which is important to me as a 6' 1", 230lb male. As soon as I entered Ken greeted with a smile that I swear glinted like those toothpaste commercials. I informed one of the box-boys that I had a houseful of women who needed chocolate and he gave me this look that said, "been their bro, check aisle 2 (there are only 3). To my surprise their was a huge selection of ice cream toppings. I had been on the lake all day causing massive wakes in non-wake zones so I was beat. In my haze I accidentally picked up chocolate sauce instead of fudge. For any men reading this, if you make this mistake protect the jewels as apparently chocolate sauce = diarrhea. I also picked up some Moose Drool beer which is one of my favorites. Did I mention Ken's great craft beer selection? Wait I just did (LMFAO). Upon checkout Ken was quick and friendly. He knew what the deal was. A man buying tons of chocolate and a six-pack of beer. In psychology this is what's known as a "coping mechanism". They use to be my favorite but the treatment my family got yesterday completely turned me off from Ken's Market. We were all standing in line to get ice cream and they served 2 out of my 8 grandchildren standing there saying they were short handed. When we got to the front the line had cleared out. I bought tire chains from Ken's. I paid $141.00 believing I had the correct size: 145/75/16. I took them out to my truck and my son-in-law noticed I needed a 145/75/17. My mistake, I took the unopened box to change them out, but they didn't have the size I needed. I asked for a refund and he refused but offered a store credit for that day only. Today I went to Ken's market and once I open the door it was like walking into a bass pro sporting shop and the regular grocery store all-in-one the way that the store split up by far is the coolest thing of ever seen and if you're looking for the friendly mom-and-pop type business this is the place to go.
