Upon arrival at 10:30 AM, initial medical assessments were conducted, including blood work, an electrocardiogram, and a chest X-ray, all completed within an hour. After these initial tests, we were unexpectedly returned to the waiting area, where we remained until approximately 2:30 PM. The environment was notably unclean, with unkempt waiting areas and restroom facilities. It felt like a inter city or third world ER. My husband's medical care was alarmingly inadequate. He was positioned on a bed near the nurses' station, exposed and without privacy. This gave us the opportunity to observe the staff. The main concern of the staff was a employee visiting with her baby, homemade muffins and DD doughnuts. It appeared to be the hang out for EMT's, security and at least four nurses doing little of nothing. My husbands vitals were taken once, with his pulse consistently dropping to a dangerously low 36 beats per minute, which was noted but was not of interest to the assigned nurse. Most disturbingly, no monitoring equipment was used to track his blood pressure, blood oxygen levels, or pulse throughout the rest of our entire emergency room stay. The nursing staff's interaction was perfunctory at best. Nurses would initiate questions but consistently interrupt or walk away before receiving a response, resulting in less than five minutes of meaningful patient engagement during our entire emergency room experience. Because of all the inept, nonexistent monitoring and lack of communication between staff and physician, all the physician noted was his oxygen levels seemed to be in normal range at this time (monitored for less than five minutes). The physician seemed unaware of his dangerously low pulse, that it had been noted he had fluid in one lung by the nurse, no mention of his blood work that indicated very low white blood cell count. Regardless, he was discharged with nothing but the advice to reach out to your heart and pulmonary specialists for follow up. In closing, even with all the alarming ER activity, if the results were the same and my husband had been treated with minimal concern, monitoring and shared information between staff, we would have left at least not feeling more confused and uncertain of our immediate health concerns for my husband.

This is just uncalled for. There were only 2 other patients in the waiting area when I got here. Wish there was another hospital in Dover because this one sucks!!!

During an incredibly difficult time, your staff treated her with profound compassion and kindness. We had to face some very tough conversations, and your team handled them with immense sensitivity. I was kept completely informed throughout the evening about procedures and outcomes. I have often heard stories of the dying being surrounded by a circle of loving family and friends. Because we were not expecting this sudden cardiogenic event, I was alone to face this reality. Yet, I never truly felt alone. Your medical team stepped in and became my family and friends, while loved ones scattered across the country prayed and waited to hear the outcome. I have served as a chaplain at MD Anderson, so I understand the clinical environment, but everything changes when it is your own mother. Your staff--and especially registered ER nurse Lauren, who cared for us on April 26th--were incredibly supportive, attentive, and guided me with total grace. They knew instinctively when to give me space and when to close in. You can't teach that; it is a calling of the heart. They proactively called the chaplain and, when needed, provided a private family room. Their overwhelming kindness during my mom's passing leaves me forever grateful. With sincere appreciation and blessings, Suzanne Scheiber Nawrocki Spicewood, Texas

The team performing the procedure told him he would have to return for another, more in depth procedure on May 19, tomorrow, that would necessitate his staying in the hospital for 3-5 days. No one has called to tell us what time he has to be there, where in the hospital to go, or what the procedure might be. The woman my husband spoke to this afternoon said he was probably having a spinal tap, which he already had last week. Two spinal taps in a week's time, he asked. She didn't know why he needed another. He has called 4 or 5 times all afternoon and into the evening. No reply. Furthermore, they might want to retrain some folks in their billing department. My husband has Medicare Parts A and B, a Highmark supplement, and is enrolled in the plan for Delawareans with cancer who are on a limited budget. Nevertheless, he got a bill--not itemized --for $1846. Friday. Turns out no one at the billing department bothered to bill my husband's supplemental insurance or the insurance for Delawareans with cancer. The billing department just assumed my husband would cheerfully pay the $1800 plus bill. Get real. My family told us to go to John's Hopkins or Sloan Kettering for a second opinion and my husband's treatment. I wish I had listened to them.if it weren't for the courteous staff and good experience I had in the MOU, I would have rated my review a zero.
